Mt. Pleasant’s Smith signs with Cleveland St.

By MARION WILHOITE/mwilhoite@c-dh.net

Quite often when a student-athlete is recruited, a coach will observe the player for more than just what position he or she is playing for that team at that time.

That may be the case for Mt. Pleasant High School senior pitcher Meghan Smith, who on Monday signed to continue her collegiate career with Cleveland State Community College.

Smith has primarily been a pitcher for the Lady Tigers, but she has also played other positions.

“Meghan’s competitiveness is what appealed to us from the start,” said Cleveland State recruiting coordinator and assistant coach Katie Willingham. “She has the eagerness to learn and continue to grow as a player.”

Smith is third all time among Mt. Pleasant pitchers with 280 career strikeouts.

Sequatchie's Chelsea Burgess will sign with Chattanooga State Tuesday. Close to a dozen now will have signed with the school over the years, going back to mothers of a current player and one who will be playing next year as a freshman. Chelsea has experience at catcher and in the outfield, she can hit for average and power, has a good arm and can run. She was all-state in 2009. Chelsea and her teammates are working hard for another good season this spring and have state tournament aspirations after coming up a game short last year.
