Mark Shrum former player and coach @ Macon Co. H. S. passed away this morning after a long battle with cancer. Mark was also a standout as a MLB @ TTU in the mid-70's.

Don't know anything about any of the arrangements for his funeral. Would appreciate someone in the know that could pass along any information.

God Bless Lynn and family.

Played against Mark in H.S. and played beside him at Tech. Not only was he a great player but he was a better person. One of the Hearld Citizen Sports Writers nicknamed him "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" because of the manner he carried himself off and on the field. On the field he played like a wild man but off the field he had a heart of gold.

One of the last times I got to speak with him was when Macon had hired the Cook kid 2004 to be head coach. They brought the Tigers to Celina for a scrimmage, I was a volunteer for the Bulldogs and of course he was a coach. But he wasn't your normal coach, he smiled and told me that he was coaching the coaches. As everyone knows that staff probably averaged 23 years of age and Mark and maybe a few others were ask to over see these young coaches. Never forget that look on his face when he told me that.

It's a sad day for me as I'm sure it is for all the others that knew Mark. He will always be in my thoughts and memories as a good friend, a good man and some kind of athlete. Don't think I ever heard anyone say anything but good things about him b/c he bothered no one. Just wished I could have spent more time around him thru the years and especially when he was sick. But everyone has things in their life going on that keeps them from being able to do those type things.

My thoughts and prayers are with Lynn and the family.

Not trying to be nosy, but what kind of cancer did the coach suffer from? My father is terminal with this awful disease as well and I'm trying to learn as much about all different kinds. My father's is called Mantle Cell Lymphoma, and he has battled it for 6 years, thats 4 years longer than the average person lives once diagnossed with this certain type. Any info is greatly appriciated, and my thoughts and prayers are certainly with the community and his family. Thanks and God Bless.

Bigblue....Sorry to hear about your father. There are several sites out there for information on leukemias and lymphomas. Have you tried googling (or your favorite search engine) on his disease? Or webmd.com, americancancersociety.org, etc. Good luck and Trust in the Lord! :roflolk:

    • I believe that was last year. I was interested in the Jones vs Baker comment, so I went back and looked at GC. I am not a fan of either nor am I a baseball guru. This looks like to me the duel was not close and if the errors would not have been made Eagleville would have won. I assume you are a little biased. I do think your mph for Jeffcoat and Baker must be from last year.  Baker-85 pitches 67 strikes. 5.2 innings, 5H, 1BB, 0ER and 7K's. 3 errors  Jones- 78 pitches 37 strikes. 4 innings, 2H, 5BB, 0ER and 1K. 1 error   Adams and the UH kid are really good as well. What about South Pitt and Oakdale? I heard they have some good ones.
    • I hate this for all the kids in the program and fans alike. I can't recall of anything like this before in my lifetime but I'm sure it isn't a first. After criminal investigations are complete and the TSSAA looks into this the program it will be facing Nuclear Winter for some time to come. It's always the innocent left behind that end up paying the price for something someone else has done. I'm sure the transfer portal will be very active in Clinton over the summer months. How could you find a good coach worth his salt that would take on a situation like this not knowing what will happen.
    • I’ve seen Jeffcoat in person twice and he was 84-87 both times and the one time I saw Baker he was low 80’s, he actually got out dueled by Jones from ER in that outing.
