Riverdale Offseason Thread!

It's hard to tell much from a first scrimmage. Not sure if it was good defense or just lack of offense.

 

Maplewood has some good athletes and some really big guys...I don't think they have enough of them to compete in 6A but they provided some really good experience for the Riverdale players. They had some big, hard running backs and the DL/Lbs seemed to handle the physical play pretty well

 

I like the way Riverdale played on the edges and the corner support on the wide runs. That looked pretty good for a first scrimmage. Lots of new faces getting playing time and some returning guys getting PT at some new spots. It will take a few scrimmages for all the changes to settle in. Pass coverage was still way soft...that will work against a lot of teams but it needs to get tighter. AD looks like he might be a difference maker back at safety. I like some of the new faces on defense but we have to find a pass rush...especially with the soft DB play. Right now it looks like the same problems against the pass we've seen the last few years...hopefully will improve before the season starts. #26 played really well for most of the scrimmage...he looked a real Riverdale defensive player a few times. #33 caught my eye on a couple plays as did #s 41, 44, 11, 35. Pretty nice step forward since the spring.

 

Offense is still a work in progress...but there was progress. They were better than the last time I saw them in Franklin. There seems to be lots of weapons and the OL looks like they might get there...OL certainly better than in the spring. QB just needs lots of scrimmage work and will need help from those RBs early on. Natural QB but has to get up to game speed and get much more accurate on the throws.

 

One cautionary note. I saw Oakland scrimmage Friday as well and they are pretty far ahead right now in terms of execution. Riverdale will be fine from the size, speed, and athleticism aspects. The goal right now has to be to learn assignments and execute better as a team. Still a long way to go and just a few short weeks to get there.

 

Overall, I'm much more optimistic than I was in the spring.

There's really not a lot to say about the scrimmage. Riverdale took the 1's either 14-0 or 21-0. When I left, overall, it was 34-7 I think. Yes, the OL continues to improve but the whole team still has a long way to go. The kicking is...well, just not a thing of beauty yet . The scrimmage seemed to lack some of the intensity I've seen in some of the other Macgavock-Riverdale scrimmages. That may be because Riverdale was pretty dominant.

 

There are some realy good players but putting it all together as a team, with everyone doing their job on every play, hasn't happened yet. I like some of the personnel moves as they will make the warriors a more dangerous team. I like some of the stuff I see from the defense. Just got to get everything synched up and everyone going in the same direction.

 

I did hear that a kid was trying to join the team late that could kick.

OK here we go Riverdale fans...What I seen was offensive and defensive line will be pretty good. QB will be Woody and he will be fine starting week 1 and Dale will help out if he can't get it done. Woody passing game is getting better and he can run. Dale arm is better but decision making is slow and that's trouble for him because he looks not to run it. RB's are ready just set it up and let them do what they do and thats pound the rock.WR's have spend but their success depends on QB.Now let's get down to the big factor with this team. LB'S are good between the tackles but slow to the flats. More speed at lB's or better scheme. Secondary how we wasn't prepared last year for Maryville. Why for one thing soft coverages will work on most teams around here but once you play skilled timing teams like Maryville you get picked apart all night long! When your a running team your defense will be good against run because that's all they see in practice. #2 and #26 are really good DB's but are they instructed to play soft coverages. In the 7 0n 7 camps I seen those DB's play great up in your face defense but soon as they put the pads on they back off for some reason.#26 had some big hits against Maplewood so I know these guys are physical so what I see is put two safties over the top of # 26 and #2 and move them up in the WR's face and watch that front seven get better. We will see if this team can overcome this non traditional Riverdale schemes and get back to running down teams throats and blasting everything that moves on Defense...Now that's Riverdale Football my Friend !

Don't know if the kid is on the team or not but when I passed by there this afternoon one kid was practicing field goals all by himself in the field in the left front of the school near the parking lot the band practices in.

 

One ball and one kid. He was running to retrieve it each time to kick it again. That shows me SOMEBODY wants to play a BUNCH!

Any team could benefit from having a kid with that type of work ethic and determination to improve his game!
