Who should we keep an eye out for at 160? Who are the favorites?

Keep you eye on McCoy Newburg out of Independence. He finished 2nd in nationals in 09(freshman) and 8th last year with a last second loss in the quarterfinals. Hes one heck of a technitian on the mat. i cant wait to see who puts up a fight this year

He is impresive. He's a takedown artist and reminds me of another ex-Indy wrestler (Seneca). He'll be unstoppable once his ground game truly does catch up with his takedown skills.

After reading this I'm wondering if you have ever even seen Newberg wrestle? Hes a scrambler, his ground work is much better than his takedowns.

I agree Newburg is a very good wrestler but 160 is a big jump from 152. A lot of wrestlers have trouble making that jump.

He won numerous off season tournaments at 160, I saw him take the TofC pretty easily at 160. I don't think its THAT big of a jump, 189-215 thats big. 152-160? Not so much.

Thats going against 152s that went up to 160. Most 160s are at 171 or 189 in the off season.

I sat in McCoy Newberg's corner when he was wrestling at 160 in Fargo and competing quite well (finished with a 4-2 record). I can assure you that he won't have trouble making an adjustment moving from 152 to 160 because he isn't used to wrestling opponents that size. People at Fargo are getting to their optimum weight, whatever that may be, so I know Newberg will be fine with a move up one weight class.

 

The only time I really consider going up only one weight class to be a big move is moving from 103 to 112 and 215 to 285. Those are big moves because of the change in type, style, and skill level of the wrestler usually involved.

i don't see that much talent at 160 and i'm sure there will be some sleepers making some noise. Bradley can always produce some decent contenders at this weight but Soddy has had some intense transfers. I hear one of them is an ex mma fighter, just sayin. Maybe the biggest sleeper will come from the small school division at east literature. All i know is that it is gonna be a toss up and some great competition, look for best match at this weight at state.

Do you mean the same sleeper that McCoy Newberg from Indy teched in the region 6 finals last year?
