Congrats to every player that won Mr. Football and to those that were nominated, its an honor to even be nominated for Mr. Football. Devrin Young was very well deserving of the award as was I'tavious Mathers its a shame that both of them couldnt get. Its good to see enough talent in the state where theres a question on who should win :D. Once again Congrats to everyone that won and that was nominated

Let me say this, before I make anymore enemies than I already have.

As fans, we will probally never know what all goes into a voters mind with these awards. Just like why some people will ask "Why did you vote for George Bush" or "Why did you vote for Barrack Obama". Who knows what goes through a voters mind.

IMO. The Mr. Football award would have been represented to its highest if Mr. Young or Mr. Mathers won it.

I just think it is great for Tennessee high school football that we have the chance to debate this. It is about time this state has the tallent to argue about.

If Mr. Mathers has a 2011 season like he did this year and does not win it. I will strike the match to burn down what ever the Blackman faithful feels like needs to burn.

You didn't make an enemy with me and I didn't mean for it to sound like that. If you want my honest opinion the best player wasn't even nominated. I'll give you a hint he is a great Running back/slot receiver and one heck of a defense player. He wears purple and gold and lives in Smyrna. Now I don't think he is a better running back than those two but boy he sure is one heck of an all around football player.

One simple truth. Supporters love the ones they know. Had Mr. Mathers won, the East Tennessee folks would be on here selling the virtues of Mr. Young. I'm sure they are both deserving. When have you ever seen a vote where all that cast there ballots are intimately familiar with all candidates? I'm sure hearsay, reputatation, and few tossed coins determined this year's Mr. Football.

Well said. If, I had to guess 3 votes for Mr. Young came from east tn, 3 votes for Mr Mathers came from middle tn., 3 coin flips in west tn.

I can assure if Mr. Mathers had won. I would not say Mr.Young was robbed. Because they both were deserving of the Mr Football award.

Mathers got his due!!!!

Mathers named Gatorade Player of the Year

Blackman junior and Mr. Football finalist I’Tavius Mathers has been named the Tennessee Gatorade Football Player of the Year.

Mathers, a 5-foot-10, 185-pound running back, rushed for a state-best 2,614 yards on 240 carries in 13 games for the Blaze this past season. He scored 29 rushing touchdowns and returned two kickoffs for touchdowns this season.

He finished with 3,058 all-purpose yards.

The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one award-winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school boys football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls basketball, boys baseball, girls softball and boys and girls track & field. The selection process for Gatorade State and National Players of the Year is administered by ESPN RISE, the multimedia high school division of ESPN, in partnership with The Gatorade Company. All final selection decisions are the result of a collaborative effort between ESPN RISE and The Gatorade Company.

Amongst Gatorade Player of the Year award alumni, fans will discover names like Peyton Manning, Candace Parker, Alonzo Mourning and Lisa Leslie. These champions represent only a handful of exceptional talents who were first recognized by the Gatorade Player of the Year program before shining at the highest levels of competition. Over the past 24 years, more than 10,500 state and 200 national Players of the Year have been honored for their athletic excellence, academic achievement and exemplary character.

Congrat I’Tavius Mathers you deserve it!!!!
