Programs that refuse to play Football with open dates

Old Pirate says a school that refuses to play another school in football should not be scheduled for other sports. OP can vividly remember when BB & LV would not play the Pirates in football but was more than willing to play other sports. SP has annually been known for football while other sports have been the whipping grounds for other programs.

SP,TC,SM,Alcoa and other successful football programs should cut ties with local schools that want to pick what sports they schedule.

It'd probably be too hard to fill the schedules for basketball and baseball if they did that

Not for S.P. anyway because there are plenty of 1a schools that don't have a football program. Sale Creek, Richard Hardy and Washburn for example.

I agree with what you guys are saying, but would SP really want to drive all the way to Washburn to play a basketball or baseball game? I live in Knoxville and I wouldn't want to drive to Washburn to play anything. Just a thought, it would be a really long road trip for a game. I do agree, you shouldn't be able to cherry pick your sports.

No, I don't expect such a drive unless it was part of some sort of "Christmas" tournament. I was just using a school that has been around a long time and never had a football program. Washburn is about the same size as SP and are the "other" Pirates in Tennessee. :thumb:

Article in Chattanooga TFP Area’s elite have trouble scheduling

From that article >>>>

“There are a couple of teams that have either backed out of playing us or their coach has lied to my face about not having open dates,†said Grider, whose program has played just one nondistrict 1A opponent in the last 10 years. “So we’re making a policy to not play those schools in any other sport beginning right now. We won’t play them in the basketball games we were scheduled to, and we won’t keep them on our baseball or softball schedules, either.

“It’s fine for them to beat us by 30 points in basketball, and we’re just supposed to smile and take it. But they won’t play us in football. How do you expect your program to ever get better if you don’t play good competition your own size? There’s a whole other district of teams our size in Chattanooga, but Boyd-Buchanan is the only one of them that will play us. The people dodging us better hope they don’t meet us in the playoffs, because I have a long memory.â€

Who is he talking about?

I don't know who he is talking about, but for years that is how the basketball team has done things. If they think they can beat you, they will play you. If they think they can't beat you, they won't play you. It sounds like with the new policy they won't have many basketball or baseball games either since so many people are dodging them. I wish South Pitt well on filling the schedule. I read where Cleavland is playing Alcoa, maybe they are still open.

Since there are many schools that don't have football teams baseball and basketball games that we drop are not hard to fill. We have a pretty big district in baseball and basketball so we have a pretty full schedule just playing those games. The only teams I know for sure that refuse to play us in football are Bledsoe and Grace but I'm sure there are more. As far as picking only teams in baseball and basketball that we think we can beat is false... we have lost a lot of games over the years for that to be the case. We just lost big to Grace last week...for the last time anyway. Aren't you a Grace fan?

I understand why Vic is frustrated. However, I don't know that I would agree with his course of action because it puts undue burden on the other sports for the sake of football. Not many local A or even AA teams want to schedule SP for football, which means that in order to find a team for basketball/baseball/softball/volleyball, those coaches have to travel farther for games.

Right now our district has 8 teams in it which means you have 14 district games in basketball on your schedule. When Signal Mtn moves out next year, that will drop to 12 games. I'm sure that Coach Phillips would want to have more court time than 14 games before the District Tournament. If he can only fill the remaining 10-14 games with teams that are willing to play football, it will be difficult for him to have a full schedule.

We all know that football is king in our neck of the woods, but don't make the other sports suffer because no-one wants to play you in football.

    • Sorry Barn. I wasn’t specific enough. It seems I’m always protecting the principal at 825. My interactions with her have been extremely positive, but very limited. With all the other stories being told, I’m confident there are other sides I am not aware of. Regardless, there are lots of decent people earning good checks up there. Maybe too good, which explains why no one is willing to speak up. My beef is with the poor communication among the athletic programs and with the administration. Seven years ago the poor communication led to my son missing graduation due to a sporting event that was planned months before. I chalked it up to the system being totally shocked that the baseball team made it out of their district, and our then AD was a football coach. Maybe they were surprised and did not plan appropriately. That was more palatable than they just didn’t give a crap. Déjà vu, seven years later, same thing. Different administration, but same result.  Maybe in seven more years, it will actually be “about the kids”. They should do better.
    • That's a fair line. But if it's not over, that's a big problem.
    • RR, you think that changes this year, or at least improves? I know they had a couple of talented young receivers last year that made some plays later in the year. Defensive back was a struggle against any team that was above average at throwing the ball.
    • You would think they got a bunch of interest
    • You would think with football just three months away more would be talking. There's only so much a person can say about someone allowing the field to get painted without asking their boss who would have said ((((((((  ALE NO ))))))))) or all the other BULLS#!T they've done as they lead Maryville High into the new age of WOKE in a conversative town. I'm ready for some football news without hearing something coming out of 825 that Power Munger has done to cap off the week.
