MBA-Oakland scrimmage

Got to see the first half or so of the scrimmage. Was stuck talking to people most of the time so didn't get a great feel for things. Also, I had no idea who 99% of the players are since I've been out of the loop lately.

Briefly, MBA looked really good on the first drive. A good mix of pass and run. QB (#6?) was in shotgun most of the time. He looked to have good control of the offense. MBA running back #23 looks like he is a player. Very shifty and broke some long runs. MBA marched down and scored. First series on defense looked good too. Three and out and Oakland lost yardage. MBA got the ball back and took it to the Oakland 10. MBA then threw a INT in the endzone. QB should have dumped it to #33 in the flat, but threw instead to the WR in the corner and it got picked off. #6 for Oakland had a heck of a nice catch for the INT. Momentum seemed to shift a bit after that. Oakland scored on the ensuing drive.

After that things looked pretty evenly matched. Not sure how much substituting was going on for either team. Oakland looked as big as MBA on the OL, although MBA looked more fit and was more physical. Their LB's did a nice job. Oakland had several very athletic backs and recievers. MBA has a big OL, pretty quick DL and some hard hitting LB's (#44). There is, as in years past, an apparent lack of speed at WR and I would be concerned about the defensive secondary, as well.

Also saw one of the Ensworth assistants there taking notes.

Anyway, just some random thoughts on what I saw.

Roll Red.

Dylan Hall is the qb, has apparently beaten out Simonis. Dylan has a good arm, runs decently well, will throw into trouble at times. MBA strength will be OL with Bars, Robertson, and Bradshaw leading the way. #23 is Gary Jackson, good runner who has been a little fumble prone the last two years. Other tbs are Jamail Wright and JeTarri Donald. Best runner in spring practice, according to Coach Davis, was John Bachmann, but he has been moved to safety (Jackson missed most of spring practice). Still learning that position but projected starter. Once he learns that position he may see some O eventually. WRs will be Best, Birdsong, Blackwell for the most part, all good players. Best probably has the best hands, no pun intended. TEs will be Einstman (basketball player) and and Robertson but sometimes Wilson Johnson will fill in too. MBA D-line will be very solid with Kevin Murphy leading the way. LBs are stout with Kay, Morphis, and Hamilton (a bit small) but not the fleetest of foot. Corners are Beckner and Hooper with Wright backing up. Safeties will likely be Bachmann and Blackwell, two basketball players and good athletes. Punter will be Clint Smith, backed up by Bachmann and punt returner will be Best. Players love Coach E! And by the way his son is a 9th grade stud qb.

Oakland is down this year so its hard to tell how good MBA really is. Strong potential though. A LOT of really good athletes. Big Rdd will be faster and better on D his year.
