retiredtothebleachers
Let's be real. It is covered up at many D2 schools in Tennessee. The institutions refuse to enforce what they know are the rules. The TSSAA does not have the manpower to investigate and enforce the rules. And most schools do not have the integriy to follow the rules or the courage to self report when they do break them, inadvertently or not. Custer
So how many students that have since graduated (or still enrolled, even) were recruited? I remember a few years ago when the 'Baby Shaq' kid (7 foot 13 year old) was at MBA. He failed out of the school, but after his stint there, he had some interviews talking about how MBA was supplementing his tuition cost. This was when he was in the 7th-8th grade there. Also, is MBA going to to have to forfeit previous games for these infractions? McG's first season resulted in a state title, but seeing as how all of this recruiting stuff seemed to start with him, are they going to forfeit all those wins under his coach tenureship? Man, some of you guys kill me: 1. John Henderson, aka Baby Shaq, never went to MBA. Middle school years, through the 8th grade, at St. Pious. High School at Pearl-Cohn. Never failed out of anything either. 2. Nothing of significance will come of the TSSAA investigation. Not saying it should or shouldn't, but the TSSAA does not have the financial resources to take on MBA, imo. MBA should have done exactly what KWoodroof wrote above, but they didn't and they won't...too much money and power involved on both sides of the issue. I believe that any wins, in any sport, will be vacated if a student receiving illegal assistance played in them. This will go beyond football into other sports and it will go back as far as the trail leads. Years. The trail leads right to the headmaster. There is not going to be much point of any MBA appeal. Its that blatant and indefensible.

By nothing of significance, I mean nothing going forward. We'll know soon enough.
williamsoncounty
If MBA gained a competitive advantage by abusing the financial aid process, and then tried to cover it up, what would be the appropriate consequences?
twinwildcat
I believe that the young man referred to as Baby Shaq" was Aurie Allen (I'm probably mispelling his first name), not John Henderson.

Yes Aurie Allen, who I believe went to St. Vincent before MBA.

BDURHAM
The City Paper has not named the students involved because, in most cases, it’s not apparent that they even knew of the outside assistance. The students in question attended MBA at different times from the mid-1990s up until today. Of the monies delivered: • At least three members of the current MBA Board of Trustees have reportedly paid tuition for students who were also athletes. • One student athlete had a family member who worked for free for an alumnus who in turn paid the tuition. • The father of one student worked for an organization controlled by a prominent MBA donor. The father worked for the organization during the years his son played at MBA, according to IRS records. • One individual confirmed to The City Paper that MBA knew he paid the tuition for a student athlete outside of the normal financial aid structure. • At least one student athlete had his tuition covered outside of normal student assistance channels when his parents were going through a divorce. BuckLateral
According to an article in this morning's Tennessean by Maurice Patton reporting on yesterday's TSSAA Board of Control meeting, the MBA investigation is winding down. Director Childress is quoted as saying after the meeting " we expect to have our findings in their hands by (this) morning". Not clear if by "their" he means the Board of Control or MBA. Stay tuned. Looks like all the speculation going on under this topic and the others regarding the Big Red may soon give way to some actual findings of fact.
