The goal of every team competing in the girls' state soccer tournament this week is to remain in Chattanooga through Saturday, when championships will be decided. The goal for the Scenic City is to make sure the tournament stays put for the foreseeable future.

The tournament begins today, with 19 out-of-town teams and five local teams playing at three locations before culminating with title games in four classifications Saturday. However, this is the final year of the city's contract with the TSSAA to host the event.

The TSSAA Board of Control is set to hear proposals from Chattanooga and Murfreesboro at its Nov. 15 meeting before voting on who will host for the next four years.

"Obviously it's great for the city economically, but it's also awesome for our soccer community to get to see so many great teams from around the state," said Baylor coach Jimmy Weekley, whose program has qualified for the Division II-AA semifinals every year but one in the 15 years the tournament has been held in Chattanooga, winning seven state titles. "If the tournament leaves here, it's going to be missed by a lot of people.

"One thing I like about how it's played here is you can watch games one after the other, whereas in Murfreesboro it would be spread out over several fields with games played at the same time. So fans wouldn't be able to watch more than one game at once. And to be honest, the fields in Murfreesboro aren't in great shape. There are a lot of teams that play there and it hasn't been well-maintained. All the fields that host games here are in real good shape."

While it would appear Chattanooga has an advantage after hosting the girls' soccer tournament since 1997, that experience has not helped the city in previous attempts to host state tournament events. One by one, Chattanooga has lost hosting rights for state tournaments in wrestling, volleyball and the five-sport, Olympic-style Spring Fling event through the years.

After hosting the state wrestling tournament for more than 25 years, it was moved to Franklin in 2010, and volleyball moved to Murfreesboro in 1995, after being held in Chattanooga the previous 10 years. Chattanooga was the birthplace of the Spring Fling and hosted that event for nine years it moved to Memphis before finding what looks to be a permanent home in Murfreesboro, where it has been held the last seven years.

The Fling generated more than $2 million annually to the local economy and ranked behind only the NCAA Division I-AA (now FCS) championship football game as the biggest financial events the city hosted. But the same way the I-AA game and the SEC women's basketball tournaments eventually left for bigger offers, the Fling has grown into a $5 million annual boon to the Murfreesboro economy.

"No question it's been disappointing to see those events leave our city," said Merrill Eckstein, former president of the Greater Chattanooga Sports and Events Committee. "It was also tough to take when we lost our bid to host the football state championships to Cookeville.

"The frustrating thing is in many cases we built the events from scratch, worked to make them popular and then lost them when other cities threw more money at them. In one way it's disappointing, but in another you feel proud because we took those events from nothing and made them attractive. Some events just literally outgrew us."

Girls' soccer is the only state tournament not currently played in the mid-state. Besides the Fling and volleyball state tournaments, Murfreesboro also hosts the boys' and girls' state basketball tournaments, while wrestling is held in Franklin, bowling is in Smyrna, cross country is in Nashville and football is in Cookeville.

"Chattanooga has meant so much to all of those championship events and has always been first class in the way the city hosted them and helped them grow," TSSAA executive director Bernard Childress said. "Nobody really knows what will happen with the girls' soccer tournament until we hear the proposals from both cities. It's my understanding that Chattanooga also plans to try to get some of those other tournaments to come back there.

"It really all depends on which city makes the most impressive proposal, and then how the board decides to vote."

I am totally biased (I live in Murfreesboro), but I hope they bring the games here. I agree though with the writer that the TSSAA should not have as many games running concurrently as they do. I take off a day of work (1st day of public competition) when the boys play in Spring Fling, but lament the fact that I can only see a few of them. However, there are some advantages, if one game gets ugly and out of reach, I can walk for one minute and watch another game.

 

The fields are almost always in good shape. Although, the championship field goalie area has looked bad at times.

I understand all of your arguments but you must start to think down the road a bit. The state tournament for the boys is no different than a club tournament for the boys. Now that we move closer and closer to players starting to decide whether to play high school vs club (that is a different subject at a different time) that we need to make each state tournament (girls and the boys) special but different than a club tournament atmosphere. As a spectator, it is easy to see many games at a complex but for the players, it is just like another club tournament. Talking to many players on the boy’s side, they think it reminds them of a club tournament compared to talking to the girls. The girls enjoy being the only team playing at one field. Can this be accomplished at Murfreesboro? Yes, but I think it needs to be looked at before you move the tournament. Just my opinion.

Hotel are a nightmare in Chattanooga with the Regatta the same weekend. Many teams have to stay long ways away from the fields. Travel for teams to the far corner of the state needs to be considered too. The turnout for the CBU vs. Father Ryan semi last year in M'boro was unbelievable. No club tournament will every replicate that atmosphere. It would be a mistake to keep the girls in Chattanooga.

i was not impressed with how the tournament was organized and set up. Because there was also a travel tournament the same weekend decent hotels were hard to find and book for large parties. Secondly unless you reached the finals there was no PA announcing of the starting lineups or the game. and lastly the officiating was very poor and inconsistent. During the season our team had some games that were not well officiated but several of the games I watched in chattanooga were poorly and inconsistently called games.

During the season our team had some games that were not well officiated but several of the games I watched in chattanooga were poorly and inconsistently called games.

 

 

If there was a local team playing in your match, the refs were not local...

 

The hotel issue was mainly the Head of the Hooch regatta (2nd largest in the United States) which started Saturday and had 1999 entries, but likely had teams coming in Thursday or earlier...

      The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.

      I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.

      All these college signees went yo other schools for 3 years, were getting college offers then transferred to Bearden. It’s not like this staff did much to develop them.    The BBall coaches son and the Seymour transfer were some of the most talented QBs in the region, and you guys developed them into QBs who might complete one pass a game.
