I expected him to be a #2 seed but I guess current season head to head results isn't part of the criteria. Region champ with a win over #2 seed and only a 5 seed? Doesn't seem right for him.

Welcome to the TSSAA state tournament where wrestlers are "separated" and not "seeded". After the returning medalists (must also be a current region champion) are placed in the bracket, the rest is supposed to be the luck of the draw.

Rob, jordans not seeded at all. Only returning medalists that won their region are seeded in the bracket. Only 3 seeds are built into bracket....rest blind draw. Blaike coulda caught Davis in quarters, Wilson in Semis, and presumably Ethan in Finals. There are some tuff guys throughout this bracket so really dosent effect Blaikes mindset on who or when he has to wrestle them. I knew who the only seeds would be by knowing region champs and medalists

Several brackets look a bit off to me especially 220. Top two wrestlers on the same side of the bracket in a few different weights. I guess I'm used to seeding criteria: 1. Region champs 2. Current head to head 3. Last years placement. Most agree that current year results trump previous year results. So what exactly is the seed criteria for the TSSAA state championship?

My bracket shows them split at 220. Tennessee has always been by blind draw.

Ok thanks for the insight. I didn't realize the state tournament wasn't seeded. That explains the brackets. I guess i shouldn't have assumed they were seeded.

As already mentioned it really isn't a seeding criteria as much as it is a separation criteria.

In order to qualify for separation you must be both of the following:

1) a returning state medalist (previous year or year before)

2) a region champion

They will separate based on previous year state placement with same weight given first position, then higher weight, then lower weight.

Once you are passed that is comes down to blind draw with regional separation (region champ and runner-up usually in opposite halves of bracket if possible) and placement taken into account (1's vs 4's, 2's vs 3's).

Not the fairest system in the world but it has been the same for some time and there shouldn't be any surprises to the coaches. It would be nice if they would take the time to look at head-to-head for the regional champions at least... maybe that could be added in at some point.

Ok I got it now. Thanks.
