Here's something Jordan, Blosser, Badon, Holker and ol fixture Manning can be proud of from the state's largest newspaper...

REAGAN CHASES PERFECTION

Despite winning the Division I 285-pound championship with a 50-0 record as a junior, this wrestling season wasn't a given for Clarksville's Bruno Reagan.

As recently as two months ago, the possibility of giving up his senior campaign was a strong option.

After taking up football as a sophomore, Reagan committed to sign a scholarship with South Florida in June, and considered enrolling in spring semester classes at the Tampa school before getting on the mat in December. Since joining the Wildcats and first-year coach Tommy Badon, Reagan has put together a 9-0 record with eight pins coming into this weekend's Johnny Drennan Memorial tournament at Father Ryan.

"Back in early November, late in the football season, I kinda wanted to go," said Reagan, the top seed in the Ryan tournament. "But I decided to come back so they could use that spot for a (junior-college transfer), and because I wanted to wrestle.

"Wrestling has a place in my heart."

Having placed fourth as a sophomore under veteran coach Jeff Jordan, Reagan went unbeaten last year with Jacky Blosser in his corner. This year, Badon arrived after a lengthy stay at longtime rival Dickson County and has admittedly just made some tweaks to what Reagan does.

"I just communicate with him what I see as his weaknesses so that he has an idea of what they are," Badon said. "Last year he had a couple of close matches because he gave up some takedowns and got down. He wound up pinning anyway, but he had a couple of close matches. He just got out of position. As long as he stays in position, he's pretty tough to deal with.

"It's just about mat strategy. Most of his natural ability and natural talent comes from him and his judo background, and the foundation of his wrestling comes from coach Jordan. As far as technique, there's nothing for me to teach him. It's just about making sure he's got his head in the game and has the knowledge to stay away from any situation that's going to get him in trouble."

With a wrestling background dating to fourth grade -- and a judo background that goes back to the age of 3 -- Reagan may not be the prototypical 285-pounder because he can actually execute a repertoire of wrestling moves.

"He can roll around," Badon said. "I don't think we've had another heavyweight like him (in Tennessee) since Scott Wells. Scott wrestled like a 125-pounder."

Wells, who won the 1998 and '99 275-pound titles at Brentwood Academy, went on to play college football at Tennessee and has played 10 NFL seasons with the Packers and Rams.

Like Reagan, Wells went undefeated as a junior. Matching Wells' unbeaten senior season isn't necessarily Reagan's goal, though.

"I just want to be better than I was yesterday," he said. "I try to do better every day. That's worked out for me."
