COOKEVILLE — The Cookeville wrestling team continued its march toward the postseason Friday night, getting a big 46-20 victory over Region 5-AAA foe Siegel at the Johnny Miller Wrestling Room.

With the win, CHS clinched an automatic berth in this week’s Region 5-AAA duals, which will be held Thursday at Tullahoma.

“It was huge (Friday) night,†said CHS wrestling coach Scott Cook. “The guys came out and wrestled hard, about as hard as they’ve wrestled all year. It was very physical, very uptempo, very fast-paced on their feet. It was big. Siegel has beat us the last two or three years, and to come back and to get that monkey off our back and get back up to the top of the districy felt pretty good. I’m very proud of them.â€

Cookeville got started with a long string of wins, as Tyler Pike (182-pound class) edged Ryan Mitchey in a 4-3 decision, Trenton Cumby (195) pinned Dylan Bargatze in just 50 seconds, and Darren Houston pinned Landen Patterson in 3:54.

Zach Dillon (285) continued the onslaught by pinning Joshua Burkhart in 1:23, and Justin Rogers (106) completed the run with a 17-10 decision over Tyler Grant.

The Cavaliers forfeited to Faris Abuzahra (113), but got two more wins at 120 and 126 as Lane Elkins won by technical fall 17-1 over Baylor Bramble, and Joe Hayden pinned Brandon Riley in 5:07.

At 132, the Stars got a win as Nick Grant edged Bronson Satterfield 9-6.

But the Cavaliers pulled away with three more wins as Tristan Strader (138) topped Lane Folger in a 10-0 major decision, Dalton Underwood (145) pinned Xavier Whitaker in 2:55, and Scott Chaffin (152) pinned Timothy Roper in 2:54.

Siegel ended with two wins, as Dustin Holmes beat Dylan Peters (160) by technical fall 17-0 and the Cavs forfeited at 170 to Jordan Vaughn.

The Cavaliers (19-1, 3-0) have just one regular-season match remaining, hosting region foes Riverdale and No. 10-ranked Blackman on Tuesday. Weigh-ins are scheduled for 5 p.m., with the wrestling beginning at 6 p.m.

“Riverdale’s got some strong kids on their team, and Blackman has got a pretty good strong team top to bottom,†Cook said. “So that’s gonna be a tough challenge for us. But I think right now we’re on an uptick here. I really think we’re ready for it. We’re gonna go after it. It’s our senior night, and our guys have a lot to fight for so I’m excited about it and looking forward to it.â€

160 is all over the place! King(Beech), Wilson(Maryville), and Broyles(Morristown West) could all have a case made to be ranked. Broyles with a win over King at the Dobyns Bennett Indian Classic and dropping a close decision loss to a wrestler that Wilson went to OT with before splitting matches by injury default with King for 5th tells me that Broyles is a gamer at this weight. Broyles and King also finished higher than Wilson at the Indian Classic. King was ranked for a minute according to Hamms rankings and now with a loss to Wilson in the Halls final(5-2) he dropped out of the rankings. Lets not forget that Wilson was able to perform well at the state tournament last season and was able to finish 6th.

Agreed, Jeff! Glad to see that boy of yours making loss of noise for MTSU! Go be proud of him :)

More from Ward Gossett...

Semi-unknowns to watch in the traditional AAA regional at Walker Valley and the A/AA traditional region at Hixson include East Hamilton's Briar Potter (106), Red Bank's Trent Comeaux (106) and Devin Crawl (170), Bradley's Hunter Parker (126) and Ooltewah's Mack Fairley (195) and Jacob Keltch (285).

Trojans rise in state poll

Soddy-Daisy climbed back into the top five in the Tennessee high school coaches' poll, coming in at No. 5 behind Cleveland, Father Ryan, Baylor and Wilson Central.

The Trojans swapped places with Bradley following their win over the Bears last week. McCallie is seventh, followed by Montgomery Bell Academy, Ravenwood and Walker Valley. Blackman is 11th and Christian Brothers 12th. Hixson was among other teams receiving votes.

Soddy-Daisy went 5-0 at the Christian Brothers Duals over the weekend. The Trojans' closest match was 47-24 over the hosts, and their largest margin of victory was 72-12 over Cordova. Austin Houser, Garrett Alexander, Tyler Hixson and Hunter Maynor led the way with five victories each.

Cleveland, Soddy-Daisy, Bradley and Walker Valley will compete in the Region 3-AAA duals Thursday at Ooltewah. Cleveland meets Bradley and Soddy-Daisy takes on Walker Valley in semifinals at 7 p.m. The championship match is scheduled for 8:30.

Tornado 4th at Prep Slam

Father Ryan won the Southeastern Prep Slam in Atlanta with 232 points, while McCallie was fourth behind Lake Highland Prep from Florida and New York's St. Anthony's Academy.

The Blue Tornado had two champions: Adam Connell (138) and Nathan Hoodenpyle (182). James Westbrooks (126) was a runner-up and Ethan Dendy (120) and Jay Roberts (220) placed fifth.

Baylor-McCallie Friday

The annual Baylor-McCallie meet is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday at McCallie.

There is now some talk of McCallie also hosting the first-ever Division II East/Middle traditional state qualifier on Feb. 8. It was first thought that Baylor would host a one-day mini-tournament, but that now is up in the air because small school coaches didn't like the idea of seeding the top four wrestlers in each weight class and then having everybody else wrestle for the fifth and sixth spots. At last word, the tournament's fate was in the hands of the participating schools' athletic directors.

UTC's Eslinger nears 3rd All-Time

Now in his fifth season as the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga head coach, Heath Eslinger has a record of 56-35 and is one win from tying Ethan Reeve for third on the school's all-time victory list.

UTC is 11-5 heading into Wednesday evening's Southern Conference meet at The Citadel.

Reeve, now strength and conditioning coach at Wake Forest, had a 57-38-2 record in six years with the Mocs (1985-90). Jim Morgan (1969-83) leads at 209-70-3. Andy Nardo (1953-68) is second at 77-30-4.

Having Heath Eslinger as head coach is a tremendous boost for wrestling in general in Tennessee and the entire SE, especially now that they have broken back into the top 25.

He brings a long term commitment to Tennessee and UTC wrestling. I foresee him staying here long enough to become the second most winningest coach of All Time. At D1, and for what it's worth, it will take another 10 years or so to catch the legendary coach Jim Morgan, IMO.

Being the coach with the most wins in D1 at UTC or the coach with the 2nd most wins at D1 at UTC is all relative and depends on the schedule.  If UTC wrestles a very difficult schedule it will take much longer to accumulate wins but it will get the athletes ready for the NCAA tournament. IMO, the only thing that counts is how well you do at the NCAA Tournament & how many All-Americans you can produce each year.

Hixson Wrestlers Edge East Ridge, 31-27

Tuesday, January 21, 2014 - by B.B. Branton

It was a Hixson-East Ridge battle from the 1970s.

Two tradition-rich wrestling programs went at it at Hixson Tuesday night with two tie scores and four lead changes and it came down to the final match.

With the fans from both schools cheering to the end, Hixson’s Ronnie Huff posted a major decision against Jayln Allen worth four team points and a 31-27 team victory.

Huff scored a takedown at the first and end of the opening period, plus an escape to lead 5-4.

Allen gained a tie at 5-5 with a second period escape, but Huff then turned it on with 12 straight points for a major decision to clinch the team triumph.

“Hats off to East Ridge for wrestling a solid match and we came out flat,†said Hixson coach Garrick Hall who now has 199 career wins. “I knew at weigh-ins that they were ready and we weren’t. They fought off their backs in certain matches, but we were able to come back in the final two matches.â€

Starting at 152 with a technical fall by Hixson’s Landon Goforth (5 team points), the Wildcats won four of the first six matches for a 19-6 lead.

The Pioneers then won five of the next six matches to lead 27-22 with two matches remaining.

Hixson then secured the win with a technical fall by Joe Stegall ,followed by Huff’s major decision.

“It was an exciting match, I thought we wrestled well, but Hixson won some big matches at the end,†said East Ridge coach Chris Bird.

Missing a few players who were playing baseball but still absolutely dominated. A lot of young ones got in halfway through the 3rd when the score reached 33-0. QB Tilton Pickett looked very sharp.  Sam Pickett is on another level this season. Seems to have put on 15 to 20 lbs in the off season and added a step as well. Transfer from last year Williamson caught numerous balls and is very elusive. Lots of athletes on this team. Defense was smothering and will only get better. The head coach from Sewanee was in attendance and offered 2 kids after the game. Could be a special year.
