Gotcha, I thought we were still talking about the Chattanooga region Hamilton and Bradley Counties. These two counties are always grouped together and competing together even before the public/private split. The small school division separated several of them but they have their own Chatt region and the top four larger schools are still in the same region along with Ooltewah and East Hamilton.

That's how its done in D1's 32 man bracket every year

What if a D1 freshman beats the retuning state champion in the Region tourney the week before...is the freshman seeded in the state?  And could it be possible that the freshman Region champ draw the reigning state champ the first round of the state tourney?

Taxman, a state champ being second in your region can make a bracket unsensible, especially in a smaller <32 man bracket.

Here's a fine article from Blount Co area (becoming another hot bed) that has just a few clicks on the home page...

Prep wrestlers grapple their way through day two of state duals

By Marcus Fitzsimmons | (marcusf@thedailytimes.com)

FRANKLIN — Heritage got its rematch, Alcoa got its bit of history and Maryville got some seasoning for the individual tournament Saturday in the long session of the TSSAA Duals Wrestling Championships at the Williamson County Ag Expo Center.

Alcoa

The Tornadoes weren’t looking to be satisfied with just making the state duals for the first time and proved that Saturday morning grappling their way through the A-AA elimination rounds to the consolation finals against Hixson. The Wildcats repeated as third in the state with a 45-30 win.

“For our first time down here it’s good though we wanted to finish higher. I’m proud of our guys to come back this morning and wrestle three times back-to-back-to-back and find a way to win two of those,†Alcoa coach Brian Gossett said. “We know where we need to get. Pigeon Forge, Greeneville, Hixson, we’re not quite to their level, but we’re getting there.â€

Despite how well the afternoon ended, the day didn’t dawn promising for the Tornadoes as East Nashville Magnet took a 24-0 lead over Alcoa in the first elimination match. But it was the Eagles who ended up being eliminated as the Tornadoes scored 47 straight points starting at the turn to the light -weights. Michael Mora-Colon (106) and Anthony Richardson (113) picked up 6-point pins. Nathaniel Murphy added a 22-7 tech fall at 120 and Ryan Verhulst (126) and Tim Fisher (132) got forfeits that put Alcoa into the lead.

“We knew East was really good in those upper weight classes, and again the draw didn’t do us much good there, but I know if we could get through that the kids we had coming up could get it back going and they did,†Gossett said. “After that 24-0 turnaround we started wrestling better all the way to the end.â€

For the Tornadoes making the historic first trip to state, the duals were a new experience and the floor of the Ag Expo Center with its win or go home excitement a new venue.

“It was nerve wracking and it was exciting,†Murphy said. “We’ve had a couple new guys with us and watching them get better and better and helping us get here.â€

“This year’s just been a big year for Alcoa with records being broken and firsts everywhere,†Verhulst added.

While the rally to down East Nashville and win over Eaglesville put Alcoa into the model round on its first trip to state, the team took a message from losses to two of the top three teams at state.

“I’m proud of them for what they’ve accomplished this year, but it’s a young group so we have a whole lot more to go. I think we got where we wanted to be in getting here and we probably exceeded expectations making it to the third place match,†Gossett said. “We’re still chasing the top three but we’re still getting after it to get there. There’s a lot of people at Alcoa High School that have helped us get here, some assistant coaches, some administrators, some people that couldn’t be here right now and this is as much theirs.â€

Heritage

Heritage won its way through three elimination matches to get a second chance at Soddy-Daisy, which put the Mountaineers into the must-win half of the bracket taking the first round pairing Friday night.

It was the third go around with the Trojans in Heritage’s last six state dual matches with the winner moving on to the consolation final and Soddy made it three-in-a-row over the Mountaineers.

Heritage went to the final match with the Trojans Friday and it was just that close again.

The Mountaineer plan was close to on track but the list of injuries took one more hit and it changed everything.

When the Tylers collided at 170, Heritage’s Tyler Sheehan came out the worst for it and coach Jerry teaster pulled the plug as a medical forfeit that gave Tyler Hixson the victory and Soddy-Daisy a point from sealing it.

“We knew the matchups and that certain things had to go to a certain way. If we win that match then we felt good about our 195 and 220, that they would have taken care of it and we win by one. It was down to that,†Teaster said.

“That was the game plan but when Tyler got hurt, that was it and it kind of took the air out of it.

“They’ve got it in them they won’t quit, they’re a great brotherhood. They fight for each other. Tyler wouldn’t have given that match up, I took it out of his hands because he’s hurt pretty good and there was no need to make it worse.â€

Heritage bounced back from Friday night and used its strength on the ends. The Mountaineers dominated at 220 and 285 then turned the corned with another dominating pair at 106 and 113.

The quartet of Jeb Davis, Tyler Coppenger, Juan Hernandez and Nick Crawford were a collective 19-1 at duals, controlling the turn from heavy to light.

“They’re solid, the good thing is at 106 and 113 is we get them back but we lose those seniors and that hurts,†Teaster said. “We came out of the Halls match with four other guys hurting. They gave us their all but it was kind of rough. State duals have never been good to us on that count and hopefully we have enough healing time to get back up for regionals. I don’t think we’ve lost anyone definite like we did last year.â€

Maryville

The Rebels saved themselves some of the bumps and bruises that can accumulate through a long day at state duals and are hoping that will help find some individual redemptions at region duals and a trip back to Franklin Valentine’s Day weekend for the individual state wrestling championships.

Cookeville ended Maryville’s duals trip with a 42-30 win in the first elimination.

“We just didn’t wrestle as well as we did Friday. We need to get focused on next week and the regional tournament now. The good thing is we got out of it with no one getting hurt so we ought to be ready to go. We had a couple guys held out that should be ready to go by then,†Maryville coach Mark Humphrey told The Daily Times.

Cookeville won the flip and set the tone making the matches they wanted and it showed as the Cavs took matches in trios.

It was a tactic that got Cookeville past Maryville and all the way to the sundown consolation semifinals.

“Sometimes momentum is important. I try to not play that up too big. Every match you have the chance where you might draw the start at your weakest area, so our kids need to see the big picture. If you let momentum control it, you aren’t tough enough mentally. If it does impact us we need to get over it,†Humphrey said.

“They won the draw which didn’t allow us to get a couple of the match ups we wanted. Last night we won the draw, so we got some match ups we wanted but it wasn’t in our favor this morning.

That flip is one of those things that can lose or win a match for you, it can make such a difference in your match ups.â€

The only time a wrestler is seeded is if a wrestler is a returning medalist AND wins the region. If both of that criteria isn't met they're randomly thrown into the bracket but split from all placers from the same region. Wrestlers from the same region are always split.

I downloaded this 53 page pdf report from their site that goes into scientific detail how to do this right. The research is extensive from credible sources.  They don't see peaking as hogwash, but essential to rise to elite.

It would be hard to do that in D2 especially with 106 with no state placers but they do have a record against each other.  Are they not seeded?

The coaches have been told that they will not seed the tournament and the only qualification for separation (terminology used in the TSSAA Handbook is placing) will be previous state medals.

Needless to say I don't believe that any of the coaches were happy with that suggestion.

That would indicate the a weight like 106 will be completely blind draw.
