BA versus Ensworth

As I said, I considered the Baylor win to be a total fluke.  Having said that, I also considered the EHS win to be a bit of a fluke too, especially given that Elder went out in the 1st quarter.  Thus, I guess my position is that the Baylor win was a bigger fluke than the Ensworth win. You could add both of these games to KWoodroof's "Things I Didn't See Coming" category.   LOL

I too am not a big fan of "comparative scores."  However, they DID suggest that EHS should win big and in fact they did.  There was a 60 point "flip" ("swing" if you prefer) that I find difficult to dismiss as simply as 2 opposing "down nights."

Nor am a I expecting any "flip" in this most highly anticipated rematch.  Anything is possible.  Should be a great one.

In retrospect, those 2 BA losses seem surprising.  But not so much when you consider that youthful talent, which BA has in abundance, often improves greatly during the course of the season.  Moreover, I think their coach is becoming more savvy and realizing he ain't in Texas anymore.

BTW if I offended Briarcrest, CBHS and/oir St Bene by giving them zero chance or preventing this rematch, sorry....

I'm a bit curious what you mean by "ain't in texas anymore".  As much as i am a fan of TN DII AA football AND consider it to the best division in TN, Texas is Texas and is on its own level of HS football.   Cody will tell you that to this day as he did with me again a few wks back when we had lunch.  Guys like matthew stafford played under him and at a few of the top teams in TX.  All of those major DI schools in TX? 90% of their players come from TX. I was just there last wkend for the TX - TCU game and saw the rosters - almost all TX boys. Same with TTech, A&M, etc.  Actually i'm glad he brought his style of offense he used in TX to BA this yr - felt he could not implement it his 1st yr.  With the talent he had at BA last yr i wish he would have done so. Curious stmt

Ensworth is too good,They will cruise to a State Championship!

you might be right but it also might be up for grabs this yr. Seeing EHS a few times every yr incl this one says to me they are not at the same level as last yr for instance - still very good but we'll see. MBA, BA, MUS have a shot. Maybe another in there also.

I think something that hasn't been mentioned: the past 4 years this game was DOMINATED by #15...every time he touched the ball or it was near him something happened. Without him Ensworth looks much different - credit BA, they did a great job containing Ferby (who may not have been 100%) - Elder was such a difference maker in past years' games, without him Ensworth is not as explosive. Also, in the past Ensworth's QB play has been very solid - young Bowers was a solid qb that didn't make mistakes - again credit BA for putting the Ensworth qb in position to turn it over. Matchup in 3 weeks should be even better - expect a much different Ensworth and different atmosphere at Ensworth's field.

This was my impression also.  Overlooked in Ensworth's run of great RB's was the QB play.  Bowers had a knack for making teams pay who loaded up to try to stop Corn.  And, in a game like last year's BA game, when the passing game struggled, Corn was able to carry the load for a victory (along with the defense).

It's a testament to Ensworth that they are still this good despite losing both Bowers and Elder to graduation... BA looked like a balanced team on offense and defense.  Will be really hard for anyone to beat them (including Ensworth) if they look like that for the play-offs.

I think any of these teams (as well as MUS and, perhaps, Baylor) are good enough to beat each other on any given night. I think that somewhat explains the incredible flip in 2011 - Baylor caught Ensworth on a down night and Ensworth then caught Baylor on a down night. You are certainly entitled to your opinion (and from what I have read on these boards, your opinion is one that I have much respect for), but I don't really look at either game as a "fluke". In my opinion, that is what makes D2-AA the toughest football division in the state.

What compelled me to characterize these games as "flukes" were the SCORES - NOT that they both beat each other.  It's an accurate cliche in D2 that the elite teams all can BEAT each other on a given night.   These were BEAT DOWNS....

Hated to hear about The Big Mighty Ensworth getting beat. As ive said all along ,not even the best team in the State of TN.EAST TN IS TN Football

Glad you have recovered enough from the Vols beat down by Missouri to join the conversations again!  First, congratulations to BA on an impressive win.  Second, time will tell whether your high regard of East Tennessee football is justified.  Playoffs are a great time of the year.

Games between East Tennessee playoff teams and DII-AA teams

Brentwood Academy 45, Science Hill 0

McCallie 55, Cleveland 35

Baylor 21, Webb 7

This is not an ideal sample size, because most East Tennessee teams refuse to schedule teams from our league.

    • I've always been a football fan first and then if you have a band that's awesome. No question that DB has one of the best bands in the country and the whole region should attend at least one DB game just to see their band. I don't know if Nick Saban could come to Kingsport and build a football program that could match the Dobyns Bennett band's success. That said,as mentioned before, a couple of things would have to change in order for the Tribe to just win a state championship on the field.Besides a program that starts from the peewee teams and goes all the way to J Fred with all coaches and weight training { in time }on the same page. Sometimes it also takes a little luck like the 1998 Vols .There are a lot of great athletes at a lot of big schools around the state and just because you want something doesn't mean your going to build a program like Alcoa has. Yes,start at the bottom and have guys that are quality coaches teaching at every level is 100% the first step. Parents can make it a lot easier by getting their young athletes into an early start with conditioning and weights as well when they are old enough to lift.If your son is a man in the weight room before he gets to DB , then it won't take a "Dobbs" coach to make him competitive against other schools athletes when it comes to strength.

    • A complete cultural change happened at Greeneville and the administration and community opened up their checkbooks.  What a lot of people don't know is Ballard was Zeller's OC for many years and stopped coaching for two years because Zeller and Ballard didn't see eye to eye on some things.  Zeller lead Greeneville to it's first ever Semi Final appearance in 2000 and lost 28-12 at Maryville and had them in the Quarter Finals in 2002 and 2003.  Z was a great coach but lost some control when it came to making workouts mandatory. (He learned from that Mistake and it was at LC when i coached with him.).  Z was let go going into my Senior Year and was replaced by Steve McCurry who was the one that turned the program around.  Steve had won a 4a state championship at AC Reynolds in Asheville and made the administration completely redo the weight room with new equipment, had a football period at the end of the school day to lift, started devil camp, and brought in coaches like Danny Bentley (Still the OL coach), Ballard as the OC, Cody Baugh (QB coach and still there), and even Spradlen who is Greeneville's head coach now as the DB's Coach.  McCurry only coached for two seasons at Greeneville and took a team that had a losing record the year before and finished my Senior Year making it to the Quarters and having a 10-3 record and then followed it up with a Semi Final appearance the next year with an 11-3 record and back to back conference championships.  Loved McCurry to death but the recession hit and the story i heard was he was still buying new equipment for the team that the Principal didn't authorize and his response was "I don't answer to you and only to Niswonger and Bewley" (Two huge donors).  That was it for him and they Promoted Ballard shortly after that.   Greeneville had always been relevant ever since the the late 70's under Coach Fred Sorrell's.  Since Sorrell's took over in 1977 Greeneville overall winning percentage is over 76%.  The biggest reason people might not have thought Greeneville was "Good" until Ballard was Greeneville always played up Classification wise and could never get over the hump. (When there were 3 classifications we played 3a, when it went to 5 we played 4a).  Greeneville is the largest its ever been with 953 students and where playing teams 2 or 3 times there size back in the day (I had a little over 800 kids in the school when i graduated in 2008).  Other teams always would know they would be sore after a game but depth took over and never won a Championship until Greeneville played in the classification the TSSAA actually assigned them. You had names like Dustin Moore (1993 Mr Football for 3a and who Phillip Fulmer said was one of the greatest athletes he ever recruited), James "Mud Turtle" Mayes, Brigham Lyons, Byron Gillespie, Frankie Debusk (National Champion Qb at Furman with GQ), Jasmine Lowery, Cody Baugh, The Greenway Brothers, Joe Watson (Furman), etc.  Now the cultural is from the Pee Wee league up and you grow up as a young kid wanting to wear the Greene and White.  Here is a really good link when it comes to anything Greeneville Football related. https://greenevillefootball.com/   I also don't coach anymore.  Z told me i was to smart with how the school systems are ran these days and ended up going into real estate in Knoxville which has been a great decision for my life.
    • Yes, they will. I'm wondering what kinds of strides Sale Creek will make heading into the second season under Coach Fitz.
    • No yellow stripes on the rug last night. Biggest crowd I’ve seen at 825 since the alco debacle.
