Starting a program is possible with one athlete at least in GA, reminds me of what Angelo Giasanti accomplished some 17 years ago for Lavergne and entering tournaments as the lone wrestler & ultimately surprising the entire state against an undefeated BC Bear in the TN State Finals...

Stellar first weekend for Memorial Day wrestler Jeff Crosby

Savannah

LOCAL

Jeff Crosby, the lone member of the Memorial Day wrestling team, had a perfect tournament in the Trinity Christian School Invitational in Dublin this weekend.

Crosby pinned each of his four opponents while not giving up a single point en route to winning the 160-pound class. Crosby’s semifinal and finals matches each lasted under 60 seconds.

Impressive Baylor finishes high in probably the toughest tournament in the SE right now...

Takedown Sportswear Invitational at Archer, the back-to-back State champions in 6-AAAAAA hosted the 39 school event which show cased top teams from Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee and South Carolina.

SCHS head Coach Randy Prater said, “This is by far the toughest tournament in the state. "

Besides Archer, other top finishers were Thompson HS which is the 2014 Alabama State Champion. According to this article, 3rd was Baylor who placed fourth in the state of Tennessee last year. Gilmer won GHSA 5A State titles in 2013 and 2014. Commerce was the 2014 GHSA 1A State Champion.

I just posted I wondered how Baylor was doing, see if you can use your investigative schools to find some articles on the individual results for this tournament. maybe the Archer area paper has a better article. Would also like to see results from the Prep Slam and Southeastern duals in Alabama. What about the PowerAde in Pa and Kansas City tournament Tennessee schools participated in?

Why would we google? I thought that was what you did on this whole post? lol

I found more detailed results on Archers website, I couldn't find anything on the Kansas City tournament. I think the info you posted was in correct, Im pretty sure that tournament is huge with way more than 20 teams and I think they place everyone all the way down to last place.

Ill dig around and see if I can find anything on the teams that went to the PowerAde, Prep Slam and Southeastern duals ,I find it more interesting to see how Tn matches up in those tournaments than the local stuff.

Top-ranked Bears win Brawl, Moffatt Duals

by Staff Reports 8 hours ago | 266 views | 0  | 9  |  |

THE TOP-RANKED Bradley Central wrestling team captured the championship trophy at the Fandetti-Richardson Brawl in Johnson City Saturday, with four weight division champions and a total of 12 medalists. The Bears also improved to 16-2 on the season with a pair of victories over state-ranked teams in the Moffatt Duals on Friday evening. Contributed photo

JOHNSON CITY — The top-ranked Bradley Central wrestling team captured the championship trophy at the 15th annual Fandetti-Richardson Brawl over the weekend in Johnson City.

Coach Ben Smith had a dozen of his Bears place in the top six of the 14 weight divisions as they ran away with the title with 268 team points, 88 more than their nearest competitors.

Christian Brothers, ranked fifth in the latest D-II poll, took second place in the event with 180 points, while second-ranked (A-AA) Pigeon Forge and the host eighth-ranked (AAA) Science Hill squad were third and fourth with 155 and 152 points respectively.

Bradley also improved its dual meet record to 16-2 on the season with wins over Christian Brothers and Science Hill in the Moffatt Duals Friday evening. The Bears downed the boys from Memphis by a 39-22 margin and the host Hilltoppers 53-12.

"Following an emotional rivalry week (defeating both second-ranked Cleveland High and Walker Valley on Tuesday and Thursday), it was nice to see this team answer the call and rise to the occasion two more times,†praised Coach Smith. “Any time that you ask your team to make weight and compete hard four times in five days, it's natural to expect some emotional or mental letdown. But, for the most part, we wrestled and competed hard.â€

“We had a solid effort at both the Moffat Duals on Friday and then again on Saturday at the Brawl,â€â€ˆhe added. “We’ve got another big week ahead with Ooltewah (on the road Tuesday), (fourth-ranked) Soddy-Daisy (at home Thursday), and then the Halls Invitational (in Knoxville on Saturday). We’ll be back to work tomorrow (Monday).â€

Four Bradley wrestlers brought home championship trophies from the Brawl — TJ Hicks, Toribio Navarro, Knox Fuller and Brett Brown. Three others advanced to title matches — Ryan McElhaney, Stephen Scott and Corey Gatlin.

Hicks posted four pins on his way to the 106-pound title, while Navarro, a two-time TSSAA state champion, captured the 113-pound crown. Fuller dominated the 126-pound weight division, while Brown was tops at 182.

Hicks, a sophomore, Navarro, a senior, and Fuller, also a sophomore, are currently ranked No. 1 in their respective state Class AAA polls, while Brown, a junior, in listed third in the same state rankings.

Sophomore McElhaney is also ranked third at 120 pounds, while Scott, a senior, is fifth at 138. Gatlin isn’t currently ranked in the state 170 poll, but has been drawing a lot of attention with his recent run.

Junior DJ Adams earned a third place finish for the Bears in the 285-pound class, while newcomer Josh LaCoe took fourth at 132.

Bradley got a fifth-place showings from Donnie Beyer, who had three pins and a technical fall at 145, Caleb Adkins, who also had a trio of falls at 152, and Clay Jack Bandy at 160.

“Ed Elkins (195) gave a good effort at a higher weight and Tripp Storrs (22) is getting better every match,†assessed Coach Smith.

“I'm extremely proud of Stephen Scott and Corey Gatlin for making the finals of their first varsity tournament as well as our champions: TJ Hicks, Toribio Navarro, Knox Fuller and Brett Brown,†he praised. “Ryan McElhaney and DJ Adams had strong showings against tough competition as well. I'm really proud of this team's dedication, effort and heart so far this season.â€

Not Cleveland or Chattanooga, but Fine Cookeville Coverage for these upper Cumberland Wrestlers...

Three Cavs medal at tough G.P. West Featured

12 Jan 2015 Written by  Herald-Citizen staff Published in Sports font size decrease font size increase font size Print Email

BRENTWOOD — The finish was not what Cookeville wrestling coach Scott Cook would have wanted, but he was still able to pull some positives from the Cavaliers’ performance Saturday in the G.P. West Invitational.

The Cavs placed 12th among 20 teams in the always-challenging tournament, which is hosted by Brentwood High School. Five of the teams in front of Cookeville were either ranked or receiving votes in the most-recent coaches poll, while the winner was Kentucky’s Union County.

“I’m not excited about a 12th-place finish, but if you look at the company that we’re in with the teams that finished ahead of us, you’re talking about the best in the state,†Cook said. “To be in the mix with that level of competition — I’m not happy with (the finish), but I can see that we’re headed in the right direction.â€

Union County, Ky. (282) won the tournament by a comfortable margin over No. 4-ranked Cleveland (233). No. 10 Soddy-Daisy (156) was third, followed by Summit (147.5, receiving votes), No. 5 McCallie (144), No. 11 Brentwood (137), Blackman (132.5), Clarksville (125), Ravenwood (120.5) and Nashville’s Overton (106.5) to round out the top 10.

Antioch (101) was 11th, followed by Cookeville (97), Stewarts Creek (91), Oakland (84.5), Siegel (72.5), West Creek (69.5), Page (64), Dickson County (47), Centennial (42) and Houston (40.5).

Medaling for the Cavaliers were senior Darren Houston (220-pound class, 2nd), junior Ty Hammons (170, 2nd) and senior Dalton Underwood (152, 5th).

“We wrestled hard,†Cook said. “Several of the younger kids won a couple of matches; they just fell short when we started getting into the medal rounds. But all in all, at this point in the season, we’re definitely starting to ramp up and we improved in our performance as far as places and getting to the finals over last year. So we’re making strides.â€

Cookeville was without senior returning state medalist Trent Cumby at 195. In addition, the Cavs did not field competitors at 113, 132 and 160 for various reasons, according to Cook.

“That makes a point difference, and having the other guys in the tournament would have scored some points for you,†he said. “But as this point in the year, everybody’s missing people. Everybody’s beat up and everybody’s hurt. The biggest thing right now is trying to get the guys better, and at the same time keep them healthy and keep them focused on what’s coming up. That’s what’s most important.â€

On his way to a runner-up finish, Houston pinned Centennial’s Noah Swartz in 29 seconds in the first round and pinned Union County’s Conner Sherman in 3:29 in the quarterfinals.

Houston edged Stewarts Creek’s Tyler Barber 3-1 in the semifinals before losing a 7-3 decision to Cleveland’s John Gaither in the finals.

Hammons, meanwhile, received a first-round bye before pinning Summit’s Zach Carney in 3:56. He followed by shutting out Siegel’s Ryan Mitchie 7-0 in the quarterfinals, and beat Soddy-Daisy’s John Williamson 4-1 by tie-breaker in the semifinals.

The championship match went down to the wire, with Dickson County’s Macon Webster getting a last-second takedown on the out-of-bounds line to top Hammons 4-3.

Underwood also received a first-round bye, then topped Ravenwood’s Grant Whitmer by technical fall 20-4. After losing by technical fall (17-2) to Blackman’s Luke Hamilton, Underwood beat Stewarts Creek’s Taylor Meguiar by technical fall 15-0, then won a 10-2 major decision over Clarksville’s Bryan Reynolds before losing a 2-1 decision to Blackman’s Matthew Sells in the consolation semifinals.

Underwood claimed his fifth-place finish with a 5-4 overtime victory over Page’s Peter Leichner.

Also wrestling for the Cavs were freshman Hunter Harcum (1-1 at 106), freshman Brad Houmard (1-2 at 120), sophomore Dylan Moss (0-2 at 126), junior Derrick Christensen (2-2 at 138), senior David Pierce (1-2 at 145), sophomore John Chea (2-2 at 182) and senior Jake Partain (1-2 at 285).

The Cavs have a tough stretch ahead, hosting Beech and District 10-AAA foe Oakland on Tuesday; traveling to another district team in Siegel on Thursday for a tri-match that also includes Hendersonville; and traveling to Cleveland on Friday for a tri-match that also includes Walker Valley.

Next Tuesday is another district match, as the Cavs are scheduled to host Stewarts Creek on senior night. Cookeville is currently undefeated in district play.

“If we want a run at a district championship and a bid at the region duals and state duals, we’re gonna really have to come on these last three district matches,†Cook said. “Siegel’s undefeated in the district, we’re undefeated in the district, Oakland has one loss and Stewarts Creek has two. Depending on what happens, any variety of combination of things could happen and it could be any of those four teams.â€

Wrestling: Out-of-towners take G.P. West top spots, host Brentwood finishes 6th

Maurice Patton for the Williamson Herald | Posted: Monday, January 12, 2015 4:53 pm

Brentwood’s Bruins may have taken their role as hosts of the G.P. West Invitational wrestling tournament a little too seriously for their own good.

Dropping three championship matchups, the Bruins wound up placing sixth in the team standings for the two-day tourney.

“The best we’ve done in this tournament is second,†veteran Brentwood coach Joe Blair said after the event concluded with Union County (Ky.), Cleveland and Soddy Daisy taking top team honors.

“But we’ve always had good, quality teams come. Compared to the teams that were here – sixth place, it is what it is. It would have been nice not to have to see Union County three times in the finals, but that is what it is, too.â€

The Kentucky power placed seven wrestlers in the finals and won four of those matchups, including each of its three title clashes against Brentwood. Saul Ervin pinned Chip Brothers at 106 pounds, Bryce Sheffer posted an 11-2 major decision over Tristan Roa at 120 and Jackson Oxford knocked off Luke Hamilton 13-9 at 152. Hamilton had won last year’s 145 tournament championship en route to the Class AAA state title.

Summit finished fourth to lead all local participants. The Spartans had a pair of finalists, with 113-pounder Brady Woodward and 145-pounder Mark Sweeney losing on pins to Union County’s Micah Ervin and Cleveland’s Ezra Taylor.

“Two years ago, we came here in the (junior varsity) division with four wrestlers,†Summit coach Pete Miller said. “This year, all four of those guys placed. The progress and the leadership we’ve had has been phenomenal. Those guys get to create a legacy, and that’s what it takes to build a program.

“We were coming in hoping to finish in the top 10. It’s been a great weekend.â€

Ravenwood’s Alex Omessi was Williamson County’s lone champion, as the 182-pound senior decisioned Union County’s Kane Morris 11-7 to improve to 38-0 on the season.

“It feels good,†Omessi said of being undefeated. “I hope it lasts the rest of the season.

“It’s kinda scary, because you never know who you’re walking out against next. Every match gets a little more nervewracking.â€

Blackman’s Tyler Garrison won his second straight G.P. West title, edging Cleveland’s 160-pounder Aaron Oliver 3-2 in what was voted Best Match of the tourney.

The decision raised Garrison’s record to 35-0 on the year and extended his win streak to 72 straight matches.

“It’s a pretty big deal,†Garrison said regarding the streak. “But I’m still trying to take it one match at a time. I don’t like to think about the big picture. It just adds to the nerves before any match.

“It’s awesome to win this again. I’m just working hard, trying to get a state championship.â€

Other individual winners of local interest include Overton’s Kue Htoo at 126 pounds, Blackman’s Josh Feuerbacher at 138, Dickson County’s Macon Webster at 170 and Clarksville’s Kiel Russell at 195.

Russell and Saul Ervin were named the tournament’s outstanding wrestlers.

Also over the weekend, Josh Filbey led Franklin to a seventh-place finish at Father Ryan’s Johnny Drennan Invitational. Filbey won the 220-pound championship. Ryan won the event with 293 points, followed by MBA (234.5) and Hixson (172.5).

North Henderson senior wrestler Mitchel Langford is on track to do something only eight other North Carolina wrestlers have accomplished — win four individual state titles.

He's currently the top-ranked 3-A 120-pound wrestler in the state and kept his undefeated season in tact over the weekend by winning the 120 title at the Fandetti-Richardson Brawl in Johnson City, Tenn. He had three pins and won 4-1 in the finals, and that made him the choice to be this week's Times-News Prep Player of the Week recipient.

His four wins at the tournament upped his career mark to 175-2, and now, he's just two wins away from breaking the career wins record at North.

It's a record that will remain in the Langford family.

“His older brother, Colby, has the record with 177 wins. Mitchel should break that on Saturday at T.C. Roberson at the Ram Duals,†North coach Heang Uy said. “We have a match at Smoky Mountain on Friday, and then on Saturday at Roberson, he'll have the possibility of wrestling in five matches.â€

With graduation just a little more than four months away, Mitchel Langford, who is 27-0 this year, has several college offers to choose from.

“To be totally honest, he's really not thinking about college right now. He's totally focused on the season,†Uy said. “I've noticed a big difference in him this year in his leadership role. He's relishing his senior leadership. He's the first to finish sprints and workouts, and he's the first to congratulate teammates as they come off the mat.â€

He had the chance several times on Saturday, as four of his teammates placed in the top five — Paul Searcy (third, 138), Celedonio Cardenas (fourth, 195), Will Baldwin (fifth, 132) and Damian Murphy (fifth, heavyweight). North wound up in eighth place out of 18 teams.

Here's some outstanding coverage of one of the state's oldest HS rivalries....

Hixson Wrestlers Nip Red Bank In Critical A-AA Clash

Wildcats One Match Away From Qualifying For State Duals After 33-31 Win

Tuesday, January 13, 2015 - by John Hunt

It doesn't take a whole lot to make coach Garrick Hall nervous.

No matter if it's an upcoming football game or a wrestling match, the veteran Hixson coach knows how to get uptight.

He got a little tense during Tuesday night's battle with rival Red Bank, but he was able to relax just a little bit after his Wildcats had beaten the Lions by a nail-biting 33-31 final in a match that moves Hixson one step closer to qualifying for the State Duals in two weeks.

"We still have to beat Signal Mountain, but if we can beat them on Friday, we'll advance to the state duals," Hall said after finally taking a deep breath following the win over Red Bank.

"Unfortunately, the way everything is set up, the second-best team in our region won't be going.  Don't get me wrong.  Red Bank has a very good team, but we didn't give up many bonus points and that was important.

"Ronnie Huff's decision at 160 was a key, but there were a few places where we avoided getting pinned that may have been the difference in the match.  We all knew that this would be a barn burner, but we did a good job of scouting them and we made a few changes along the way and they worked.

"We had to win at 170, but we put the pressure on the older guys and they came through," he said, noting that Chris Nicholson's 13-7 decision at 170 gave the Wildcats a 33-25 lead and clinched the win.

Red Bank's Trent Comeaux and Jonah Bird posted regular decisions at 113 and 120 pounds to give the Lions their only lead in the match at 13-9.

A forfeit to Isaac Yates at 126 shifted the lead back to Hixson and Cederick Harris extended it to 21-13 with a second-period pin at 132.

David Johnson's pin at 138 got the Lions within two at 21-19.  The difference was still two after the two teams traded forfeits at 145 and 152 before Huff and Nicholson secured the victory with wins at 160 and 170.

After the Hixson coaches were absolutely sure of the score at that point, they forfeited the final match with the victory already in hand.

"We just lost a big match," said an disappointed Red Bank coach Shane Turner after his team had lost for only the third time in 27 matches.

"We left a lot of points out there.  We both won seven matches, so obviously the difference was bonus points.  They got them and we didn't.

"We needed them at 113 and 120 and didn't get them either place, but I'm hoping that Hixson goes and wins the whole thing.  We didn't wrestle up to our capability.  It wasn't a lack of effort or heart, but a lack of execution.  Hixson was the better team tonight.

"This loss is tough on all of us, but give Hixson all the credit as they came ready to wrestle.  They shaved points where they needed to and that's what good teams do to win," Turner concluded.

SODDY DAISY beat Walker Valley by a 36-21 margin at Walker Valley Tuesday night.  The Trojans have another big match at Bradley on Thursday.
