Rockdale also went 2-1 in pool wrestling. The Bulldogs knocked off Newnan 59-23 to start the tournament and later defeated Carrollton 45-24. Tift County got into the gold bracket (where the Blue Devils eventually went 0-2) by defeating Rockdale 33-32 in the fourth and final round of pool wrestling.

Newton lost each of its three pool matches to West Laurens (51-18), Bradley Central, Tennessee (76-6) and Collins Hill (68-18).

The Rams fell in the copper bracket semi finals to Centennial 36-33.

Host Archer won the tournament, knocking off Bradley Central in the final 39-24.

West Laurens defeated Peachtree Ridge 60-15 to win the bronze bracket and Newnan’s 48-27 victory over Centennial secured the copper bracket title for the Cougars.

Young Shelbyville High School Getting Some Press with Big Win in Chattanooga...

Eagles pin weekend foe

Tuesday, December 1, 2015

T-G STAFF REPORT

CHATTANOOGA -- The Shelbyville Central wrestling team picked up a convincing 51-24 dual-match win on Saturday at East Ridge.

Coach Jacky Blosser credited the win to the newcomers on the team stepping up and contributing to the team score.

"The kids looked sharp and wrestled hard. We had the chance to grow a lot and we are consistently getting better every match. Our young freshmen are really coming along faster than I thought," he said.

First win

The Eagles picked up a handful of early forfeits, but saw the first pin of the match come courtesy of C.J. Mezee at the 138-pound weight class.

He pinned East Ridge's Joshua Williams 1:14 into the match.

Shelbyville followed with four straight wins, including a pin by John Freeman in the 152-pound weight class.

Though East Ridge came up with a handful of pins in the heavier weights, the Eagles saw Kane Dandy earn one final decision at the 220-pound class.

Good foe

"East Ridge has a good program and they placed fifth in last years A-AA state championships, so while they were a bit banged up and had some forfeits, we still looked really good in our matches, no matter if we won or lost. The wrestlers are putting together some quality matches," Blosser said.

Even with all the youth on the Eagles' squad, Blosser is pleased with the direction the program is headed in the early goings of the 2015-2016 season.

"Given the fact that we only have one guy that has wrestled longer than two years, I think the program and the wrestlers are developing at an incredible rate," he said.

The Eagles will be back on their home mat today, hosting region opponent Oakland at 6 p.m.

WRESTLING OUTLOOK: BA, BHS, Ravenwood lean on youth

By KEVIN WARNER

Published: December 1, 2015

Ravenwood's Chris Rowland finished as state runner-up in the 138-pound class last season (Photo by Steve Wheeler for BHP)

Brentwood, Brentwood Academy and Ravenwood all bring youthful, inexperienced teams to the mat this season.

Brentwood boasts a defending Class AAA state champion in Tristan Roa at 126 pounds, but otherwise fields a young team.

BA posted just six wins to 13 losses a year ago under their decade-long coach Rodney Cash.

Ravenwood's only head coach in its history, Josh Peck, stepped down before the season after 13 years. Interim head coach Bob Kopecky looks to bring his extensive coaching experience to bear on the young Raptors.

Brentwood High School

Brentwood finished last season 12-3 with third-place finishes in the District 11-AAA and Region 6-AAA duals, as well as a fifth-place finish at the state individual tournament.

The Bruins will look to replace the leadership of Luke Hamilton, who was the state runner-up at 152 lbs last season. Hamilton took the state title at 145 in 2014, and placed third at 138 the year before.

Brentwood also needs to replace state qualifier Colby Forsythe at 138 and third-place finisher Chip Brothers at 126.

Chip's brother, Graham, finished third at 113 a year ago. He will join Roa as a key to the Bruins' success this season.

Head coach Joe Blair needs his veteran wrestlers to help the young ones in order to produce some wins out of its tough schedule this season.

Brentwood will face district foes Independence, Summit and Ravenwood. In Region 6, it will battle McGavock, Antioch and Overton. It will also take on Cleveland, Soddy Daisy and Wilson Central, along with private school challengers, Montgomery Bell Academy, Christian Brothers and McCallie.

"We're in a very competitive district and region with a relatively young team," Blair said. "I'm anxious to see how we will perform in those pressure situations."

Ravenwood

Kopecky brings experience to the Raptors, as he coached high school wrestling in Wisconsin for 19 years, amassing 171 victories during that span.

While his extensive background can help give the Raptors guidance, the coach said his volunteer assistants impart valuable knowledge, as well.

"Our kids are willing to learn," he said. "Volunteer coach Jamie Hartman, assistant coach Jacob Freeman and assistant coach Andy Elrod bring a lot of knowledge and are excellent teachers to our wrestlers"

The Raptors hope returning wrestlers, Tailor Stole, a female member of the squad, and AAA state competitors, Nick Freeman and Chris Rowland, can show leadership to the young group.

Rowland placed second at state in 138 last season.

The new coach finds himself still getting to know the team, and what they can do on the mat this season.

"We are expecting everyone on our roster to have an impact, but I am still getting to know the kids and what the lineup will be," said Kopecky.

Whomever the Raptors put on the mat this year the idea will be to consistently improve each day, and learn more than just wrestling techniques.

"The goal is to try and get better every single day," Kopecky stated. "Wrestling is a tough six minutes on the mat, and it teaches you a lot about how to deal with adversity, not just on the mat, but in life.

Brentwood Academy

Brentwood Academy will enter the season as one of the youngest teams in the area. Despite having no seniors on the team, Coach Cash is confident his younger athletes are capable of stepping up.

Returnees Thomas Butler, Jaxson Fay, Harrison Smith, Airin Spell and Toby Wilson will look to carry the leadership load.

They will look to fill the void left by the departures of Justin Becci, Christian DiLucchio and Vance Lipsey from last year.

If BA wants to improve on last season's record, they will need newcomers to step into key roles and produce during the season. Billy Brooks, Furman Jones and Wesley Miller hope to help in that regard.

Cash said he believes his wrestlers will be competitive throughout the year.

"We should improve a lot during the season and have several wrestlers prepared to place in the state tournament," he said.

Soddy-Daisy wrestlers roll in opener, 52-18

Running off a nine-match streak, Soddy-Daisy rallied from a six-point deficit and strolled to a 52-18 wrestling victory over probable Region 2 power William Blount on Tuesday.

It was power from 106 pounds through 160 that provided the bulk of the points for the Trojans, who scored six pins and a major decision. Five of the pins came in first periods.

"It's the first match of the year. I think (the performance) is probably par for the course — shake a little rust off," Soddy-Daisy coach Jim Higgins said. "We've been wrestling each other in the room, but it is not the same as a live matches. Guys have to acclimate."

There were enough positives to keep him from a post-meet rant.

"I was fairly pleased," he said. "I thought the effort was there, the teamwork was there and the intensity was there."

William Blount bolted to a 12-6 lead, pinning in two of the first three matches. James Hartgroves and Kris Ramsey, with first-period pins, sandwiched a fall by the Trojans' Dakota Ables at 220.

Soddy-Daisy wrestling coach Jim Higgins yells instruction to one of his men Tuesday night at home against William Blount.

Perhaps feeling a sense of urgency, the Trojans began turning the screws at 106 with Jacob Pratt's pin coming in 1:48. Landon Wheaton gave them their first lead with a 9-6 decision over state medalist Calvin Martin, and Chase Payne wheezed his way to a 14-5 major decision after leading 13-0.

"Those, we have to finish what we start," Higgins said.

That was one of several notes compiled by Higgins and assistant coach Brad Laxton.

"We found out a lot that we need to work on, which is the best thing," Higgins said. "We have to work on positioning and match awareness. We have a long way to go, but we have plenty of time because we're wrestling for February."

Soddy-Daisy's Slater Daniel pinned in 0:59 at 126, and Tony Wilson fought back for a 9-8 decision over Brandon Nanney in a pivotal match that could have swung momentum.

From there, though, the Trojans ended any debate with pins from Emery Holcomb, Conner Stiles, Hunter Rogers and Tucker Russo. By the time defending state champ Russo had pinned his man in 1:26, the score had rocketed to 52-12.

The Governors' other winners were Dawson Satterfield (171) and Nolan Kennedy (182).

William Blount, a state duals participant last season, has beefed up the schedule this year, seeking out the competition with the idea of improving its program.

"We didn't take this one lightly. We knew that a lot of their guys wrestled freestyle and Greco-Roman all summer," Higgins said.

"You don't want to get beat, but the heart of our kids showed tonight. We kept fighting," Governors coach Tim Satterfield said. "We're building, and if we have one match go the other way we could've been right in this thing. I knew they were going to bring it. I thought we gave it everything we had. We're still learning."

Several of the Trojans are up a weight class from where they may wind up for the postseason, and Higgins noted that several possible starters hadn't even been able to challenge yet because they're currently restricted because of weight descent rules.

Austyn Renshaw is a homegrown product in every sense of the term.

The senior has climbed his way through every step of the Alcoa wrestling program, going back all the way to his early years. That continual upward progression was one of the many reasons why Tuesday was so special.

“The great thing about Austyn is he’s one of our kids who has been with us since he was little,†Alcoa head coach Brian Gossett said. “Being able to see him develop and become a good young man and have this opportunity has just been so great.â€

Renshaw signed with Ferrum College on Tuesday afternoon in a ceremony at Alcoa High School, choosing the Panthers over Division III schools Luther College and Simpson College.

The way Renshaw puts it, the decision was an easy one.

“(Wrestling) coach (Nate) Yetzer up at Ferrum was always on my case, always calling me and seeing how I was doing and checked up on me,†Renshaw told The Daily Times. “They’re just a big family (at Ferrum), and that’s what we have here at Alcoa. I know a bunch of kids who already go up there. They came from Tennessee, and they just welcomed me in with open arms.

“It’s just a good experience up there.â€

Before Renshaw heads north, he’ll look to cap off a decorated prep career with a strong final campaign. The Alcoa wrestler is a two-time state qualifier — including a state runner-up as a sophomore — and has garnered countless other accolades during his maroon tenure.

Gossett still remembers the first glimpse.

“Austyn’s freshman year in the region tournament, we were in that old region with Bradley (Central) and Cleveland and those guys,†the Alcoa head coach recalled.

“He got to the match before the state tournament, and he wrestled really, really tough. I knew then that he would probably have an opportunity to do this at a pretty high level.â€

Since then, Renshaw has ascended through the wrestling ranks — all while watching Gossett and his coaching methods closely. Renshaw said he wants to pursue a similar career.

“Teaching and coaching — I love how coach Gossett teaches and coaches,†Renshaw said. “He has a great time doing it, and I just want to follow up on him.â€

Whatever Renshaw’s future holds at Ferrum and beyond, he’ll always have the support of the Alcoa wrestling program he grew up in.

“I know the coaches we have in this program, this is the kind of stuff we’re super excited about,†Gossett said.

“When a kid we have from when they were little until now gets this opportunity, it’s pretty awesome. He’s a great leader for us, he’s got a lot of dedication.â€

JCHS Head Wrestling Coach Logan Hollingshead is excited to see where the 2015-16 installment of the Patriot wrestling program lands come February.

The Patriots return some very experienced talent to this year’s team, but also have a lot of holes to fill from 2015 graduates and transfers.

Jefferson County has experienced a lot of success in the past two seasons, earning a State Duals berth as a team in 2013-14 and then sending 10 wrestlers to the AAA State Tournament in 2014-15 – two of which finished as AAA State medalists.

But out of the past three seasons, Hollingshead has a lot more questions going into this one than the previous two.

Gone are two of last year’s Region 1-AAA champions, Garret English (182 pounds) and Bryson Hux (126 pounds), and nearly half of the team’s state qualifiers from last season.

Still, Hollingshead believes a young crop of wrestlers could help fill in the gaps once the Region Duals and Tournament roll around.

“We’re losing almost half the guys that qualified for state last year,†he said. “A lot of shoes to fill, but also we have a good young bunch coming up.â€

Hollingshead’s goal, as always, is to get the entire team to the AAA State Duals and then qualify as many individuals as possible for the State Championships.

“If you’re successful with the team component, you’re going to be successful as individuals that make up that team component as well,†he said. “We’ve just got to get to it, especially early this season, and see where our lineup is going to be. We probably won’t figure out our lineup until after Christmas. There’s a lot of moving parts, and trying to figure out where the best matchups are. We’ve got a lot of good kids back, a lot of young talent. We’re excited to see where this season goes.â€

Top returners for the Patriots this season include 2015 state medalist heavyweight Logan Townsend (285 pounds), who finished fourth in last year’s AAA State Tournament. Also returning are Josh Booker (195 pounds) and Luke Collins (132 pounds), both coming off of stellar 2015 seasons that saw them advance deep in the AAA State Tournament. Booker earned the Region 1-AAA title in the 170-pound class last year and Collins finished third in 132-pound class at Region 1-AAA.

Two other key returners include Stephen Harville (145 pounds) and Austin Baker (152 pounds). Baker was a third place finisher in the Region 1-AAA 152-pound class last season and Harville came in fourth in the Region tourney.

Hollingshead is excited to have a couple of young lightweights ready for the 2015-16 season after forfeiting both the 106 and 113 pound classes at the Region Duals last season.

“Those lighter weights are always the toughest,†he said. “If you can ever get a 106 pounder, that’s always a good feeling.â€

One of the biggest factors for the Patriots this season is the experience they return, and the biggest question mark will be in the light to middle weight classes, which are mostly being replaced this season.

Back to back trips to the state duals and state tournament have given the Patriots a lot of confidence against tough competition, Hollingshead says.

“In the previous years, the trend had been of course your upperclassmen are the ones that get to qualify for state and then they move on and then you get this younger bunch that’s gotten to mature and experience it,†he said. “Last year and the last couple of years, the young kids are getting better so early, which is great. They may go as a sophomore and get a little shell-shocked or wide-eyed, but that second year they’re there, it’s a business trip. Even some of the guys that were first-timers this year, no one had that deer-in-headlights look.â€

A new rule that allows six teams from both districts to go to the Region Duals could hurt the Patriots if they aren’t at the top of District 1 come year’s end, but it likely won’t be a factor as Jefferson County is usually a top team in District 1.

Previously, four teams (two from each district) advanced to the Region Duals and then two went on to state from there.

Now, six teams will advance, but there is no cap as to how many from either district can advance. Advancing to Region depends solely on your regular season finish, with the top six teams in the Region advancing to the Duals.

As far as the Region outlook goes, Dobyns Bennett and Science Hill will be strong teams as always, but Hollinshead believes Tennessee High may be the team to beat this season. The Vikings eliminated Jefferson County in the final match of the Region Duals semifinal last season, and they return most of that team this season.

“[Tennessee High] had a great group last year, but they were young. They’ve got a good junior and senior group right now. They’ll probably be really good the next two years,†Hollinshead said. “Dobyns-Bennett’s always going to be good and Science Hill is going to be solid. Volunteer made huge strides last year and Crockett made big strides as well.â€

District 1 is always strong, and historically District 2 is much less so, but Hollingshead believes Seymour and Morristown-East could both be contenders this year.

“Seymour is usally pretty talented. They’ve got great facilities down there. East is a dangerous team because they’ve got talent,†he said. “They were just very inconsistent last year. They could beat you in the blink of an eye and they could also lay an egg too. It just depended on which East showed up.â€

Hollingshead says the Patriots’ toughest Duals will be against upper-east Tennessee teams like D-B, Science Hill, and Tennessee High.

Jefferson County is also traveling to three tough Tournaments in the December 18-19 Bradley Central Invitational, the January 9 Fandetti-Richardson Brawls, and the January 16 Heritage Duals.

All three tournaments will feature top competitors from Tennessee, along with other neighboring states.

“You’ve got to travel to see that type of competition. If not, you stay your big fish in your little pond and when that pond gets bigger, it’s not going to turn out well for you,†Hollingshead said.

“We’ve got a great group of kids. They all care about each other and care about the team. There’s no selfishness, which is hard to do in wrestling, but it’s something we always try to stress. A lot of people think it’s an individual sport, but if that’s the case, why do they keep a team score? That’s the angle we take.â€

Area high school wrestling teams hope to build on the successes of last season.

Battle Ground Academy posted a 12-4 record, with a sixth-place finish in the TSSAA Division II State Invitational. The Wildcats will rely on the experience to improve that finish this season.

Centennial came out of last season with a disappointing 11-15 dual mark, but finished 11th at the state AAA individual tournament. Head coach Philip Pelkey sees senior leadership helping turn that record around.

Cross-town rival Franklin finished last season with two wrestlers placing at state, four individual regional champions and one state champion in graduated Josh Filbey. He capped his season with the 220-pound title last February. The 2015-16 hope that some talented underclassmen can continue that success.

Page set the best dual record last year at 27-4 and finished tied with Forrest and Eagleville atop Region 7 A-AA. It also finished second at the region tournament and ninth as a team at the individual state tournament.

Battle Ground Academy

After eight region qualifiers and a good end to the season a year ago, the Wildcats hope to achieve even more this season.

"I think our guys will embrace the challenge of having had a special season last year," said BGA coach Robert Jemison. "The expectations continue to grow."

Jemison returns four wrestlers that finished in the top six in the TSSAA Division II State Tournament.

Freshman Tiy Reed (120 pounds) returns after placing fifth at state a year ago. Junior Kolton Grimsley (132 pounds) finished sixth there. Senior Eric Olson tallied a fifth place finish as well.

The Wildcats also return sophomore Connor Mitchell, who placed fifth at 138 pounds.

"The next step for this program is to finish inside the top 5 of the state tournament and to qualify for the 2015-16 TSSAA State Dual Tournament," said Jemison.

Centennial High School

The Cougars chances this season will depend largely on a trio of seniors in Adam Fuller, Cole Iler and Taylor Pate.

"They are doing a great job of setting the tone in the wrestling room and demanding that they rest of the team match that tone," Pelkey said. "We will be very solid through much of our lineup."

Centennial's trio put up some nice records last season. Fuller finished second at state at 120 pounds last year, and posted 39 victories to just seven defeats. Iler finished sixth at state at 132 pounds with a 42-win campaign last year. Pate also qualified for state and split his four matches.

Pelkey said Centennial will look to those seniors and some rising juniors to replace last year's leadership of Brooks Knight and Devonte Walker, both multi-time state qualifiers.

Depth and filling out all weight classes should not be as big of a problem for Centennial this year as in years past, but it's still not where Pelkey wants it.

"Although we still are not as deep as I would like and will be thin in some areas, we should be able to field all weight classes which will be a good change," Pelkey said.

Franklin High School

Frank Barbrie enters his fourth season as the Rebels' head coach with a very young team coming into 2015-16.

The team will lean on two-time state qualifier and region champion Cameron Vogt, who will compete at 220 pounds or heavyweight this season. Junior Jack Schrader, who placed fourth at state, will also be an integral part of the Rebel squad this year at 120 or 126 pounds.

Their leadership will be important especially as Franklin faces tough tests in their region and from local teams, as well as difficult matchups against Christian Brothers High School in Memphis.

Page

Head coach Benji Gray goes into 2015-16 with some veterans who squared-off against some tough competition last year.

Senior Andrew Birchett (138 pounds), a two-time state medalist, leads the Patriots, along with junior state medalist John Noe at 182 pounds. Both finished third in their respective weight classes. Sophomores Alek Filaroski (126) and Nick Oberstaedt (132) also return as state qualifiers.

Gray also hopes to get contributions from some newcomers, as well. He specifically noted the success of the Page Middle School program.

"I am encouraged with the continual growth of the Page High School wrestling program," Gray said. "I would like for the Page High wrestling program to continue to grow from its success in the 2014-2015 season with the addition of numerous new wrestlers."

Freshmen Cole Winer (113) and Dayton Davis (220), along with junior newcomer Houston Tywater (182), hope to make early contributions this year.

Gray expects some of the Patriots' toughest competition to come from A/AA foes Fairview, Harpeth and Greenbrier High schools. PHS will also square-off against District 11-AAA foes Summit and Brentwood High Schools.

Hixson Wrestlers Sweep Whitwell, East Ridge

Pioneers Prevail 60-16 Over Youthful Tigers

Thursday, December 3, 2015 - by John Hunt

Hixson was the biggest winner in a three-way wrestling match at East Ridge's Catherine Neely Gymnasium on Thursday night.

The Wildcats improved to 6-1 with wins over Whitwell and East Ridge while East Ridge avoided a shutout by beating Whitwell.

East Ridge began the action with a 60-16 win over Whitwell before Hixson posted a 63-12 victory over the Tigers.

Then in the third match, Hixson was a 51-30 winner over the Pioneers.

"I thought we looked good in spots, but we have to learn how to stay off our backs," said Hixson coach Garrick Hall once the wrestling had ended.

"I'm pretty pleased for the most part.  We showed signs of brilliance, but we'd turn around and go to our back in the next match.  We just need some more mat time for some of our younger guys, but we'll keep plugging away," he added.

East Ridge coach Chris Bird echoed similar feelings.

"We fought hard, but we still have a lot of work to do on fundamentals.  We're getting there, but we still have lots of stuff to work on.  We fought better than I thought we would as they surprised me in the match with Hixson.

"I'm always doom and gloom as I stay excited and nervous at the same time.  I just wish we had more kids out here," he concluded.

Whitwell coach John Weiss is working hard to get his guys on the right track.  But for a guy who graduated from Hixson in 2001, he's cautiously optimistic about the future of his program.

"I thought we showed a lot of heart and fight, but we're just continuing to grow and develop as a team.  It's not about where we start, but where we finish that counts.  But I was proud of Avery Shrum for getting a couple of big wins and I thought Seth Cumby and Will Carter both looked good," Weiss added.

Shrum was the only double winner for Whitwell as he scored a major decision in his match against

East Ridge before getting a first-period pin against Hixson.

Kashawn Cosey and Christian Castro both had a pair of pins for East Ridge while Nam Dong and Darian Smith both won twice for the Pioneers.

Hixson had six guys with two wins, including Cederick Harris, Landon Goforth and Brody Gregory with two pins apiece.  All came in the first period, but none any faster than Harris who won his first match in 25 seconds and his second in just 47.

Goforth had the quickest one at 13 seconds.

Hixson's other double winners included Jacob Newman, Spencer Groves and Jonas Shackleford.

Hixson is now 6-1 while East Ridge improves to 2-4.  Whitwell is now 1-4 for the young season.

The annual Ooltewah Invitational is set for Saturday with a 14-team field.  Those teams include the host Owls, Bradley, Walker Valley, Signal Mountain, Chattanooga Christian, Central, Red Bank and Sale Creek for this area while other teams include Auburn (Alabama), Brentwood, Gordon Lee, Lawrence County, Science Hill and Warren County.

Action is set to begin around 9 at the Edward M. Foster Gymnasium with championship finals to start around 3 or 3:30.

WRESTLING -- WC sweeps, moves to 5-1

Wilson County Duals at LHS

LEBANON -- Despite having lost seven senior starters off last year's state runner-up team, it appears Wilson Central's wrestling program has reloaded with a fresh crop of talented underclassmen.

The Wildcats swept Thursday night's annual Wilson County Duals at Lebanon High's Campbell Brandon Gymnasium, moving to 5-1 on the season after downing Mt. Juliet 52-27 and host Lebanon 60-13.

Wilson Central's 31-man roster is dotted with 16 freshmen. In fact, Thursday's lineup featured five ninth graders and two sophomores out of 14 wrestling classes.

"I can't put into words how proud my staff and I are of this team," Coach John Kramer said. "Instead of hanging their heads with the loss of last year's seniors, they have accepted the challenge. Their work ethic has been outstanding and the results certainly speak for themselves".

Mt. Juliet finished 1-1 Thursday night, defeating Lebanon 55-33.

Wrestling: LFO earns two wins at home

Misty Martin | Posted 11 hours ago

Four-time state wrestling champion Kenny Hill said it was a good day for the Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe wrestling program.

The three-time Georgia champion, who crossed the state line to East Ridge High to win his fourth, said "it's great to be coaching" at his all alma-mater on Thursday as the Warriors celebrated their first home matches in quiet sometime.

"When I first got to LFO the kids wanted to know if we were going to have any home matches," he said. "I know it's the first time for these seniors so it's pretty special."

The Red-and-White's quad-match was highlight by wins over Dade County, 66-6, and Ridgeland, 45-39, before falling to Southeast Whitfield.

Hill said his three seniors including Cole Templeton at 145-pounds, James Knight (152) and Jacob Hood (160) are the "meat of the team."

"They're pretty good," he said. "They still have a little ways to go, but they have a lot of fire and are good leaders."

Hill said all of his grapplers have been working hard, not just the upperclassmen.

"We started working the second week of November," he said. "We've came a long way and plan to keep working on getting better everyday."

Templeton, wrestling at 152-pounds, and Hood went 3-0 for the Warriors at 170.

Knight, competing in the 142-pound weight class, was 2-1 for the evening along with Johnathan Cutcher at 180.

Hill said he sees "a lot of potential" with this group including 19 wrestlers.

"We have to keep working in the weight room, continue to get stronger and keep doing what we're doing."

The Warriors are scheduled to compete on Saturday in the Ridgeland Invitational.

Southeastern brings college wrestling back to Florida

When the first match of a dual meet between Southeastern and the University of South Florida's club team begins Friday night at around 7:30, Southeastern head coach Javier Maldonado will be at the front door welcoming the sport back.

Friday's match is not only the first Southeastern home event, but it is also important for local wrestlers like current Fire freshman and former George Jenkins grappler Ethan Owen. It might be even more important for the high school wrestlers of Lake Gibson and Kissimmee Osceola who will be competing before the college match takes place.

They know now that they don't have to give up on their sport after high school or head out of state. Some of the seniors that will compete in the high school match might be wrestling next year for Maldonado, giving them the chance he never had.

"It's not about me," said Maldonado, who wrestled at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga after a stellar prep career at Osceola. "It's about the university that had the vision and the dream to start a wrestling program when no one else would. It's about the wrestlers (here now) and about the wrestlers the Florida wrestlers that had to go somewhere (else) or had to quit wrestling because of not having the opportunity to stay close to home. I wish they had it when I was going to college. Hopefully our wrestlers now understand that's what I'm trying to preach to them. (They) have an opportunity to do something that no one else has been doing for a while."

“It was miserable, yet I think I needed to go through it," he said. "I think all of the stuff that I’ve been through is stuff that I’ve need to go through in order to push me towards who I’m supposed to be so I can realize who I am.â€

Garrett has had to pass more tests and get over more obstacles than most. It’s one of the things that head coach Rob Koll loves about Garrett, who he describes as being like another son. Garrett’s father died in prison before Garrett had reached high school. At times during his childhood, Garrett spent time separated from his mother.

AP

Cornell's Nahshon Garrett, right, wrestles Illinois' Jesse Delgado, left, in more

“He has had a lot of noise and a lot of distractions in his life,†Koll said. “I’m just really proud of him how he has weathered that storm to come out of it as successful as he is.â€

Koll looked at everything Garrett had done — California high school state titles at 103 and 112 pounds as well as four free style and Greco Roman All-America honors and a Senior National title at 112 pounds — while not having much as far as a stable environment and thought he could thrive in a setting like Cornell.

On the mat, Garrett has turned into “complete wrestler†in Koll’s eyes. He has always thrived on his feet because of his quickness and aggressiveness going after takedowns, but he doesn’t have any glaring weaknesses.

Koll remains more impressed by his determination and the aggressiveness with which he went after his goal of wrestling for Cornell. Garrett turned down full scholarships in order to pay his own way to community college for one year to prepare himself for Cornell.

“He came from nothing,†Koll said before crediting Garrett’s high school coach Keith Rollins and the local community for helping him get as far as he had before Cornell.

Koll recalled a recruiting visit to California to see Garrett. He went to a church service with Garrett and was struck by how almost everyone in attendance wanted to vouch for Garrett.

“It just sticks with me how many people made a point of waiting in line to speak to me on Nahshon’s behalf,†Koll said. “The minister, I remember, stopped the service to announce that I was there recruiting Nahshon and talked about Nahshon and what he had done that last weekend. It was just a really special moment.â€

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The Tennessee High wrestling program has long looked toward the upcoming 2015-16 season with hopes for a noteworthy campaign.

What the Vikings didn’t expect was the challenge of carrying on success.

Coming off a banner season with every major contributor back on the mat this year, Tennessee High will be looking to turn pretty darn goodness into greatness this winter.

“I think we definitely have more of a target on our back and that’s something we’re not really used to,†said junior standout Dewey Pendley, one of four returning individual regional champions for the THS boys squad. “Those expectations are even higher this year for us.â€

Tennessee High returned to the state duals for the first time in 21 years last season, and after losing its first match, made a run to the consolation semifinals, finishing in a tie for fifth place in the 16-team bracket for the best showing in school history.

The Vikings also notched a program-best, eighth-place team score in the individual state tournament as Corbin Hurley became the first male THS wrestler to reach a state final before finishing second at 132 pounds and Pendley took fifth place in the 138-pound bracket.

“It’s kind of a double-edged sword because now we’re put up on this podium where we’re expected to perform at that level every tournament we’re at and everywhere we’re at,†Hurley said. “We’re no longer under the radar. … But it’s also good for practice because now we know the rhythm we have to get into and exactly what we need to do day in and day out to perform at that level.â€

Hurley enters the season, which begins for the Vikings on Saturday with the Border Duals at Viking Hall, ranked No. 1 in the 132-pound weight class, while Pendley is a state championship contender as well, ranked No. 3 at 138 pounds.

Two-time regional champions Trent Nelson and Bryson Henley also highlight the list of returners for the Vikings, along with 2014 regional runner-ups Judson McCray, Harold Johnson, Jeremy Spangler and Kenneth Hagerman, who is ranked No. 4 in the state at 220 pounds.

Tennessee High coach Tim Marshall praised Spangler as his most improved wrestler over the offseason as the junior has bulked up to wrestle in the 182- or 195-pound weight class after primarily competing at 160 pounds last year.

Joining the familiar faces will be promising freshmen Dominic Fields (120 pounds), Logan Ferguson (126 pounds) and Dillon Pendley, Dewey’s younger brother who will scrap with McCray for the 113-pound spot in the Tennessee High lineup. The trio all are veteran AAU wrestlers.

“They all know what they’re doing,†Dewey Pendley said.

Despite some talented newcomers and the strong core of returners, the Vikings will still be shorthanded as they’ll likely be able to fill a maximum of just 12 of the 14 spots in the lineup for dual matches as they’re again thin in the upper weights.

That didn’t slow the Vikings much last year, though, as Marshall said his squad doesn’t back down from deeper teams.

“They definitely embrace it,†he said. “That was kind of our motto last year, the whole synergy thing, creating more with less. They embrace that. I think they definitely build off of that. It’s just become the norm to them at this point. I think they get a kick out of that whole David vs. Goliath story.â€

If anything, Hurley said being undermanned has brought the Vikings even closer together.

“We’re pushed harder every day to make up for that 13th and 14th man that we don’t have,†he said. “We as a team have to come together to be that 13th and 14th man.â€

Tennessee High finished second in the team standings at the individual regional tournament the past two years and was runner-up at regional duals to Dobyns-Bennett last year as well.

“That’s our No. 1 goal,†Marshall said about bringing home at least one regional gold this year.

After struggling for years to get past local mainstays Science Hill and D-B for a spot in the regional duals tournament, the Vikings should breeze into the postseason round this year as Marshall said a change in format will slot the top six teams in the region – regardless of district affiliation – into the competition.

The easier path to regional duals, though, doesn’t mean that the Vikings won’t be scrapping for local supremacy.

“We’re looking to beat them – period,†Marshall said about Tennessee High’s Tri-Cities rivals. “We’ll pull out all the stops in the regular-season matches. We want the No. 1 seed going in.â€

While the Tennessee High boys seek more success this winter, the 4-year-old girls program also could make some noise.

Stalwarts Krista Martin, a state runner-up last year, and Kaela Eades, who placed fourth at state a season ago, return along with sophomore newcomer Lexie Worley, who doubles as a volleyball and softball standout for the Vikings.

With just three competitors, the THS girls won’t be in contention for any team titles, but Marshall said each member of the trio is a threat for state gold in the second year of the TSSAA officially crowning girls champions.

Medals may wind up being just as ubiquitous as maroon on the mat for Tennessee High come February.

“I feel like if any year is our year to do really well, this year is the year to do it,†Hurley said. “We’re going to give it everything we’ve got.â€

By the end of Thursday night’s wrestling tilt against Cookeville, Walker Valley coach Al Morris had a number of things to be pleased with.

The Mustangs (5-2) soundly defeated the Cavaliers 51-21, which was highlighted by three 40-second or less pins in a row. Also adding to the night’s positives was the performance shown by the younger wrestlers.

“We had (four) freshmen in the lineup tonight to fill in for some other people. I was really pleased with them — three won,†Morris explained. “We still have to fix some things, but I think we’re moving in the right direction.

“We looked a lot better tonight — Cookeville is a very tough, strong team so we’re happy with the performance that we got from the guys. We made some improvements.â€

Freshmen Cameron Dwyer, Ethan West and Zeth Haynie picked up wins Thursday. Wrestling at 120, Dwyer pinned Cookeville’s Samuel Hadlock with 15 seconds left in the first round, while Haynie pinned Michael Vidal-Cortez with 10 seconds left in the first round of the 145-pound match. West, who competed at 126, picked up a technical fall over Garrett Crabtree with 20 seconds remaining in the third round.

Walker Valley’s two state-ranked wrestlers, seniors Joseph Munoz and Jaylon Martin, also came up with pivotal points.

Martin, who is the fifth-ranked 195 wrestler in the state, cut weight to wrestle at 182 and pinned Cole Cunningham 40 seconds into their match. Martin’s pin was the third in a row for the Mustangs.

Munoz, the No. 6 138-pound wrestler defeated Derrick Christensen by major decision.

At 160 pounds, junior Mikel Gregory pinned Cole Gentry in a lightning fast 22 seconds, which was followed up by a 34 second pin of Kaige Whiteaker by Walker Valley’s 170-pound junior Ben Gates.

The Mustangs final pin of the night came in the 220-pound match. Sophomore Dylan Rutherford pinned Matthew Erickson 42 seconds into their second round.

At the 132-pound weight class, senior Zane Smith defeated Jarrett Talbott by a 12-6 decision. Nick Barnett, a senior wrestling at 152 pounds, defeated Jesse Saunders in a 7-5 decision.

Freshman Mario Acevedo was pinned 57 seconds into the opening 113-pound match and at 195, Skyler Swafford was pinned at 1:54.

Walker Valley senior heavyweight CJ Schwark lost in injury time after hurting his knee.

“My heavyweight tweaked his knee. He’s having a great year, and I hate to see that,†Morris lamented.

The Mustangs’ final match of the night saw 106-pound Chandler Davis lose by an 8-2 decision.

With a district match against Ooltewah coming up on Saturday, Walker Valley’s coach has one area he hopes to continue seeing improvements in.

“We have to get better at pinning people,†Morris stated. We had earlier opportunities to pin (but didn’t utilize them) — that’s one thing that we’re still working on. I will say this, though, the conditioning looked better.â€

Things went Cleveland High School’s way on the mats Thursday night when the Blue Raiders took on Cookeville in a wrestling tri-meet at Walker Valley. The Raiders won in a 66-9 landslide.

Both teams were still making adjustments Thursday night as they prepare for the long season that lies ahead.

Cleveland head coach Jake Yost was pleased with his team’s performance, especially in the areas his mat men been have working on the past few weeks.

“I thought our kids wrestled really hard; they are doing a good job at trying to stay in those positions they are good at,†he said.

Phillip Freeman got things going early at 113 pounds which ended with a 13-5 win in one of Cleveland’s three major decision victories on the night.

After putting four points up initially, the Raiders kept the momentum coming converting three straight matches that ended with pins. In those pins, No. 1-ranked Triston Blansit (126) had a swift takedown in the first period and converted the easy pin into six points. Michael Whiteside (120) and Colton Landers (132) had pins as well. After four matches, Cleveland led Cookeville 22-0.

Cookeville squeaked out a close decision against the Raiders in the 138-pound bout, but quickly recovered with a pin by Caleb Eachus at the 145.

Seth Eachus won by a major decision, 10-2 and Cleveland poured on the points. Steven Wilson (160), Robert Hicks (170), Riley Stevison (182), Samuel Garcia (195), and Jacob Martinez (220) put together five straight pins to move the Raiders to a 62-4 lead with only two matches remaining.

In the heavyweight match, Titus Swafford dropped a back-and-forth match against Allen Richardson of Cookeville.

The final matchup involved Bryce Pond (106) who is ranked in the top five in his weight class. Pond didn’t look fatigued once as he won the third major decision for the Raiders on the night by a 14-1 tally.

Cleveland has yet to drop a dual in this early season, but still face two major obstacles later this week when they take on Father Ryan at home next Friday and compete in the Cleveland Duals the following morning.

“We are going to wrestle more kids this weekend in another opportunity to see what the best kids are for our lineup. We are just trying to build off of this. Doing the right things is great, but doing the right things day in and day out is better, and that is what we are trying to get across,†Yost explained.

Next Saturday, the Al Miller Cleveland Duals wrestling tournament will be held at Cleveland High School, which will feature 16 high-caliber wrestling squads.

The format for the duals will start with group play, where four teams will be in each pool and each team will wrestle at least three times. There will be only four teams (winners of their pools) that advance from the group stage to the semi-finals, and there will also be a third and fourth-place match that will occur for the losing teams in the semis.

Matches will be held in Cleveland’s cafeteria, the auxiliary gym and the Jones Wrestling Center, which will start one hour after weigh-ins at 8:30.

Both Cleveland and Bradley will be participating, with the Bears being the No. 1-ranked Division I team in the state, and the Raiders falling in right behind at the No. 2 position.

“When you have both of us (Cleveland and Bradley) maybe not necessarily being in the top two or three pre-tournament, it’s going to make for a good fun day,†Bears head coach Ben Smith stated.

Bradley will showcase nine wrestlers that are currently state ranked inside the top three in their respected AAA weight classes. They include Trey Hicks (No. 3, 106), T.J. Hicks (No. 1, 113), Ryan McElhaney (No. 2, 120), Josh LaCoe (No. 3, 132), Knox Flyweight classes Caleb Adkins (No. 2, 145), Donnie Beyer (No. 3, 152), Brett Brown (No. 1, 195) and David Adams (No. 2, Hwt).

Even with it not being February yet, Smith is excited with the intensity that he is seeing early, and he knows that this tournament will give them a chance to see how they compare with some of the areas top-tier wrestling programs.

“It’s a good barometer for where we are at this time of the year. December doesn’t matter like February does, but it does give you a chance to see where your lineup is at that point. I’m pleased with the work ethic and the attitudes that I’m seeing out of these guys so far. The effort, the heart and the fight [are] good to see this early in the year,†he said.

Cleveland will spotlight four state ranked grapplers, who are Bryce Pond (No. 5, 106), Phillip Freeman (No. 6, 113), Triston Blansit (No. 1, 126) and Colton Landers (No. 2, 132).

Other teams that are notable to highlight include: Baylor School, Thompson High School, Gilmer High School, Woodland High School, Father Ryan, Heritage High School, Sonoraville High School and Pope High School.

“There are a bunch of great teams; it’s the toughest dual tournament in the Southeast,†said Cleveland head coach Jake Yost.

Yost has high expectations for his young team, even though he is still gauging a finalized roster for the season.

“We are young and it’s early in the year, but I expect us to fight hard and compete hard,â€â€ˆYost said. “It’s really more of wrestling these dual meets to help get yourself prepared for later in the year. We use this as a tool to assess where we are at and where we need to go.â€

Last year, Baylor came away as champions of the Cleveland Duals tournament. They defeated Father Ryan in the finals, as Cleveland lost to Baylor in the semi-finals.

Cleveland came away 3-2 in the tournament and ended up grabbing fourth place after they dropped a close one against Woodland High School from Georgia.

The Tennessee High School Coaches Poll put out their week one state rankings for all divisions, which featured Baylor at number one, Bradley in the second spot, Father Ryan as the third seed and Cleveland in the number four position, receiving 78 votes.

These rankings are based on teams’ “individual tournament strength†and are voted on by a “statewide panel of high school wrestling coaches.â€

If the rankings and their hype live up to the preseason expectations, then the Cleveland Duals will be something that should be on everyone’s to-do list Dec. 12.

Bradley Breezes To Ooltewah Invitational Mat Title

Red Bank Takes Second With Walker Valley In Third Place

Sunday, December 6, 2015 - by John Hunt

It’s still the first week of December and a long way until the state tournaments in February, but the Bradley Bears are serving notice that they plan to be in the thick of the championship race among prep wrestling teams.

They took their first step in that direction Saturday afternoon by breezing to a first-place finish in the annual Ooltewah Invitational with an impressive win over 11 other teams.

The Bears won with 221 points and six individual champs while Red Bank was second with 124.5 points and two winners. Walker Valley had one winner and finished third with 115.5 while Ooltewah and Science Hill completed the top five teams with 103.5 and 97.5 points, respectively.

Bradley’s champions included T.J. Hicks at 113, Ryan McElhaney at 120, Knox Fuller at 138, Austin Matthews at 160, Ed Elkins at 170 and Brett Brown at 195.

Red Bank’s two champs included Gabe McDuffie at 145 and Anthony Ottinger at 285.

The remaining individual winners included Luke Dezember of Lawrence County at 106, Brentwood’s Tristan Roa at 126, Auburn’s Khaleel Johnson at 132, Central’s Alonzo Heyward at 152, Walker Valley’s Jaylon Martin at 182 and Hunter Bagley of Science Hill at 220.

Despite a lopsided edge in total points and number of medalists, Bradley coach Ben Smith was just being matter of fact with his comments afterward.

“I know we’re not where we need to be, but it’s still early December,†he said while watching the final matches unfold.

I have mixed emotions about this tournament as some of my guys did really well while others need to get with the program. I’m always happy when we win a tournament and have a bunch of medalists, but I thought we’d be a little farther ahead at this point.

“I know we still have some descending to do (concerning weight loss), but we have some lofty goals. Maybe my expectations are too high, but our goal for today was to get a little better and to have some fun,†he added.

Red Bank coach Shane Turner had similar feelings.

“That last match just got us second place,†he said after watching Devon Suddeth win by a 10-2 major decision over Gordon Lee’s Caleb Vines in the consolation final at 220.

“I thought we rebounded well from a tough loss against Ooltewah earlier in the week. We won a few matches I didn’t expect to win and we also lost a few that surprised me, but that’s wrestling.

“We finished runner-up to Bradley and there’s certainly no shame in that, but it was about as good as could be expected for this time of year. We felt like we had a good shot at competing with these teams and I feel like we accomplished that goal,†Turner smiled.

There were three pins in the finals with Walker Valley’s getting the quickest in just 27 seconds.

There were also seven decisions – including one that went several overtimes – while there was one technical fall and three major decisions.

Science Hill’s Bagley had the closest match as he was declared the winner over Ooltewah’s Victor Bednarski in the ultimate tie breaker at 220 in a battle that was later voted Best Match.

Auburn’s Johnson, who won by a 16-1 technical fall over Science Hill’s Luke Story in the 132-pound final, was honored as the Outstanding Wrestler.

While Bradley had the most champions with six, they also had two seconds, two thirds and a fourth while Red Bank finished with one second, two thirds and two fourths.

FINAL TEAM SCORES: 1. Bradley 221; 2. Red Bank 124.5; 3. Walker Valley 115.5; 4. Ooltewah 103.5; 5. Science Hill 97.5; 6. Brentwood 89; 7. Gordon Lee 65; 8. Central 54; 9. Lawrence Co. 52; 10. Auburn 51.5; 11. Signal Mountain 42; 12. Chattanooga Christian 16.

PF Finished Strong in NC...

http://usatodayhss.com/2015/enka-wrestling-wins-falcon-frenzy

Here is a recap of Saturday’s conclusion to the (West Henderson) Falcon Frenzy wrestling tournament from correspondent Harrison Slaughter.

HENDERSONVILLE – Enka came out on top Saturday as the winner of the Falcon Frenzy, Western North Carolina’s largest annual wrestling tournament.

The Jets finished the event with a score of 212 points.

Pigeon Forge, Tenn. (183), Pisgah (182), North Henderson (156.5) and Greenville (146) rounded out the top-five of a two-day, 29-team tournament at West Henderson.

“It is a big deal and when you compete with 29 schools there’s going to be a lot of great competition so it’s good for our team,†Enka coach Mark Harris said.

“I love this tournament because there are so many local teams here and it has such a tradition as this early-season destination for wrestling.â€

It is his favorite non-postseason tournament of the year, Harris added.

“We have always been a higher wrestling school than any other sport. As a team, just putting in work every week has made us so much better,†Enka senior Hunter Kinser said.

“All of our kids are dedicated to becoming better everyday.â€

Kinser won the 220-weight class with a 3-1 decision.

“It’s just amazing to see how much putting in hard work helps you and makes you become a better wrestler. Even if you lose, you can come back the next week and just get better,†Kinser said.

Sophomore Phil Daub, the youngest state champion in Enka history, said it meant a lot for him to come out and win his weight class in this tournament.

“It showed me something because I am bumping up two weight classes from last year. It showed me that I could still compete up at 120,†Daub said.

North Buncombe senior Peter Simonovich won the 195-weight class by pin in 41 seconds. He was also awarded Most Outstanding Wrestler for the tournament and had the most pins in the least amount of time.

“I came out here confident and ready to wrestle, feeling good,†Simonovich said. “I made myself a goal to get the most pins. My brother (Mikhail) got both of these awards last year and I got them both this year.â€

North Henderson freshman Josh Blatt won the 106-weight class by way of a 6-0 decision.

“I’m a freshman and it’s kind of tough, but we had a kid, Mitchel Langford, who won the state championship three times. He’s kind of my role model right now,†Blatt said. “I want to be just as good as him, maybe better.â€

Erwin junior Justin Payne won the 132-weight class with a 2-1 decision. He was not scored on throughout the entire tournament.

“It just shows that I have been putting in the hard work and I’m glad it is finally showing,†Payne said. “I bust my butt everyday in the room trying to be able to come out here and get the W’s like I did today.â€

Asheville School wrestler Conor Fenn was the 182-pound champion at the Falcon Frenzy tournament in Hendersonville.

Comentary: PSU had 7 champions: Megaludis ran through the field at 125; Cortez TB win over Conaway at 133 in finals; Retherford cleaned up at 149; Nolf blitzed everyone at 157; Morelli over Shakur 3-2 in finals; Nickal destroyed everyone until a 4-3 win over Myles Martin of Ohio State in finals; and MacIntosh dominated.   Guiibon won 3 matches and then took medical forfeit in the semis.  McCutheon also took a medical forfeit out at 184.  No one wrestled at heavyweight for PSU.

@dmm53  The interesting point manifested in your long list of strong victory verbs, and I have to list them - "run through", "clean up", "blitz", "destroy", "dominate" - is that quite a number of the PSU lineup this year have shown the ability and potential to put up A LOT OF bonus points for the team. Zain seems to be hungry for bonus in every match, and Jason Nolf and Bo Nickal don't look like they will just rest on their laurels as the new stars - they know that they are expected to bring in majors, techs, and pins, not just wins. Nico M. and Morgan M., longtime win-producing machines for PSU, are stepping up and winning by major or more, something they didn't do so much in the past few years.  Although we haven't seem this team face a long string of quality dual opponents yet, I think Cael is pushing hard for bonus point wins.  This should be an exciting season.  Can't wait for the Southern Scuffle.

Products of Ohio have nice showing... Mizzou looking good at Cliff Keen ...
