Our Mocs continue to show a bright future for Chattanooga strong!

#14 Boykin outlasts Ga HS AA Chip Ness and finishes 2nd to Duke's #3 ranked Hartmann.

Possible red shirt, Carr upended Mappes for 1st, but the starter fights back for 3rd. Just a couple of examples of how well things look for our young pool of talent.

Side note: American's Cole Moseley from Ryan looking strong amongst other TN/SE wrestlers.

BLACKSBURG, VA (gomocs.com) -- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team had a strong showing at the Hokie Open in Blacksburg, Sunday. Junior Bryce Carr wrestled unattached and won the 174 bracket, while three others placed in the Open Draw.

Carr, a junior-college national champion who is in his first season with the Mocs, is a potential redshirt candidate at 174 behind returning Southern Conference Sean Mappes. The two met in today's semifinals with Carr posting a 5-2 decision. Carr then beat Columbia's Zach Hernandez 5-3 in the finals.

Mappes also had a strong showing, bouncing back to place third overall. He defeated North Carolina's John Staudenmeyer 10-5 in the third place match.

Junior Scottie Boykin placed second at 197. Boykin, ranked 14th in the nation this week, lost in the finals to Duke's No. 3 Connor Hartmann 10-2.

Senior John Lampe was third at 184. He list to UNC's Alex Utley in the semifinals (3-2), but pinned Stanford's Ryan Davies (5:58) in the third place match. It was one of three pins on the day for Lampe.

"We had a good day today," stated UTC head coach Heath Esligner. "We had a lot of matches and we are getting out of here without any injuries. I am anxious to watch the film and see what all we can work on."

UTC also had a ton of success in the freshman/sophomore brackets with 10 placing in the top six. UTC had both finalists at 165 in freshmen Dominic Lampe and Demarco Gatti. Lampe won that showdown 4-2.

Justin Lampe won the 174 brackets while Alonzo Allen won 125. Freshmen Roman Boylen (141) and Rodney Jones (197) both placed second in their weight classes, while freshmen Chris Debien (133) and Sam Stephenson (285) where third. Freshmen Toribio Navarro (125) and Chad Solomon (174) each finished 6th.

The Mocs are back home next weekend, hosting Cumberland and Southeastern in Maclellan Gym. Action begins at 10:00 a.m. (E.S.T.) on Saturday, Nov. 14. Tickets are on sale now on GoMocs.com or by calling the UTC Ticket Office at (423) 266-MOCS (6627).

Mocs Bringing in Nation's Best Wrestling Teams For Southern Scuffle

Published: 11/10 5:51 pm

UTC again welcomes some of the top talent in all of collegiate wrestling to the upcoming 2016 Defense Soap and Flips Wrestling Southern Scuffle.  What will once again be the top in-season tournament in the nation, the Scuffle takes place Jan. 1-2 at the McKenzie Arena in Chattanooga.

Depending on which preseason poll you follow, there are up to nine teams participating who are in the top-25, highlighted by No. 1 Oklahoma State, No. 2 Penn State and No. 3 Michigan in the NWCA listings.

Other top ten teams making the annual trip to the Scenic City are Lehigh (7), Cornell (8) and North Carolina (10).  Minnesota (17), West Virginia (21), Edinboro (24) and Stanford (24) are other attendees who are also ranked in at least one preseason poll.

"I am really very proud of what the Southern Scuffle has become during its short time in Chattanooga," stated head coach Heath Eslinger.  "We have put a lot of work into it and our administration and local wrestling community are committed to making this a premier event each year.

"However, it is the commitment from these top teams from around the country to keep coming back that make it such a great event.  The competition is second only to the NCAAs and you are going to again see a lot of high-quality wrestling."

Two national champions and 30 All-Americans are in the 2016 field.  All totaled, there are 85 wrestlers who were ranked in their class in the preseason who are schedule to compete.

Tickets for the 2016 Southern Scuffle are on sale now.  Daily admission is $30 for reserved seats, $20 for general admission and $10 for youth general admission.  All-session passes are $55 for reserved, $35 for general admission and $15 for youth.  Tickets can be purchased online on GoMocs.com or by calling the UTC Ticket Office at (423) 266-MOCS (6627).

Diaz, ranked 10th, has a state championship and two state runner-up finishes while the Bullard brothers have won state titles each of their first three years in high school. Thomas is ranked second nationally and Daniel is ranked fourth.

Moisey looking to take next step as a sophomore

West Virginia’s Zeke Moisey takes top position last year against Ohio.

By Joel Norman | Updated 23 hours ago

Sophomore Zeke Moisey nearly didn’t wrestle last year.

West Virginia University head wrestling coach Sammie Henson was planning to redshirt the 5-foot-9, 125-pound Moisey, but a last-second decision to let Moisey compete paid off.

Moisey entered the 2014-15 season unranked, but went 32-14 and made it all the way to the NCAA Championship match.

While he did not win it all, Moisey is using that loss as motivation to get back.

"I came really close, but in the end I didn’t get it done," Moisey said. "So now there’s something to work for, there’s more to work at to get it done. There’s still people out there that I haven’t beaten yet."

In the NCAA Final, Moisey fell to Ohio State’s Nathan Tomasello. In the 2014-15 season, Moisey lost all three of his matches against Tomasello.

Despite the defeat, Moisey became the first unseeded wrestler to make it to the NCAA Championship match since 2003 and was West Virginia University’s first wrestling All-American since 2007.

"I think it’s awesome," Moisey said. "I credit it to Sammie Henson, our head coach. I think that anything is possible under that guy."

Moisey and Tomasello met again last week in the National Wrestling Conference of America All-Star Classic. Tomasello won the match, 7-1.

Despite falling to Tomasello again, Moisey remains determined to meet Tomasello again and win.

"That’s a loss that I need to avenge still. I had four career losses to him in the last two seasons, including that All-Star match," Moisey said. "It was a good season opener to kind of see where I’m at. I wrestled a good match against him, I think I really frustrated him this time, compared to last times I didn’t get my leg attacks going. I think each time I wrestle I get closer and closer and eventually we’re going to get him back."

A week after falling to Tomasello, Moisey bounced back by defeating all three of his opponents at the Mountaineer Quad. The No. 4 wrestler in the nation defeated Drexler’s Zachary Fuentes, Campbell’s Tyler Walker and Arizona State’s Mike Perales.

"The first three matches that I wrestled went how I thought they were going to," Moisey said. "I thought that people were going to try and slow me down a bit and not be offensive and that’s what happened, but I stuck to my game plan and got at least two takedowns every match. I controlled the pace of the match and didn’t give up very many opportunities to score."

Moisey was most satisfied with his victory over Walker, a 16-4 major decision.

"I had more than two takedowns, I opened it up a little bit," Moisey said. "I hit a mixer at the end and I was a little angry I didn’t pin him, because I had him on his back for at least 10 seconds. I could have gotten the fall, but I didn’t slit my arm all the way through, but I twerked on his neck and his head nearly rolled off his body."

To get past a wrestler like Tomasello, Moisey knows he must continue to improve. Moisey looks to improve his top game, in particular.

"I think this weekend I could have cut the guy at the Arizona State match and took him down once or twice more, but I rode him out for two minutes and felt really confident in doing that, so I’m going to use that coming into next weekend."

It will be tough for Moisey to get back to the NCAA Championship this season, but he did it last year unranked. Now, he’s fourth in the country. For now, Moisey is focused on beating whoever else steps on the mat against him, whether it be Tomasello or an unranked opponent.

UTC Wrestling: The Lampe's Wrestling House of Pain

Saturday - Mocs host Southeastern (9 a.m.) and Cumberland Univ. (noon)

Friday, November 13, 2015 - by B.B Branton

“UTC coach Heath Eslinger is a trustworthy, honorable person and when my oldest son John decided to attend UTC to wrestle I told Heath that my other two sons, Justin and Dominic, would be wrestling for the Mocs as well.â€

Jeff Lampe, father of the three Lampe brothers who wrestle for UTC

UTC fifth year senior John Lampe has wrestled in New York City’s historic Madison Square Garden and has claimed victories in the prestigious Southern Scuffle and the NWCA National Duals.

His goal this season is to win the Southern Conference and compete in the NCAAs.

His success in the sport – two-time Kentucky state champion and Flo Wrestling All-American – has not come from attending well-known camps in Stillwater (Okla.) Ames (Iowa) or Iowa City but, in part, from hours spent working out in the family barn turned wrestling room known as the “Lampe House of Painâ€

He, along with younger brothers, Justin and Dominic, honed their skills on the 24 x 24 mat as teammates and other area wrestlers eventually joined the three brothers as the place to wrestle.

“There was no open gym policy in our area of Kentucky while my sons were growing so I decided to turn our barn into a year round wrestling facility for whomever wanted to stop by for a work out,†said Jeff Lampe.

Saturday’s UTC Matches: The Lampe brothers have workout together for several years, but with a five year difference in age from John to Justin to Dominic they have never wrestled together on the same team.

Until now.

The Mocs host Southeastern Univ. (Fla.) Saturday at Maclellan Gym at 9 a.m. followed by a noon match with Cumberland Univ. (Tenn.) and the Lampe brothers will wrestle back-to-back to-back for the first time ever. Southeastern faces Cumberland at approximately 10:30.

“This will be awesome for all of us to be in the UTC lineup together Saturday,†said John, now in graduate school (held right at a 4.0 average as an undergrad and a 4.72 on a 5.0 scale in high school) and needs two wins to reach 50 career victories.

Dominic (Fr.) will wrestle at 165, followed by Justin (So.) at 174 and John (Sr.) at 184.

“This is pretty special for UTC and the Lampe family as parents Jeff and Sheley and their three daughters will all be in Maclellan Gym Saturday,†said UTC coach Heath Eslinger (74 wins) who needs four wins to pass the late Andy Nardo (77 wins) for second place on the all-time wins list behind coach Jim Morgan with 209 victories.

The “House of Pain†workouts proved successful as the brothers have several state high school place medals between them at St. Xavier, including a combined five state titles – John (2), Justin (2), Dominic (1).

“John and Justin both earned Flo All-American honors in folkstyle, while Justin was so strong and fast in youth wrestling that few could beat him,†said Jeff. “Both Justin and Dominic won middle school state championships

“This is a special weekend for the Lampe family and we are glad our sons wrestle for UTC.â€

The Mocs wrestling family believes the same.

Former UTC wrestler leads new program in Florida

November 14th, 2015by Ward Gossett in Sports

UTC's Javier Maldonado, rear, works to turn an opponent during the 125-pound final at the 2008 Southern Conference tournament at McKenzie Arena. Now a college coach, Maldonado's Southeastern University team will compete in dual meets with Cumberland University and UTC today at Maclellan Gym.

For the second time, Javier Maldonado is making a college wrestling debut at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

While competing for the Mocs, Maldonado won a Southern Conference championship and competed in the NCAA tournament each year from 2006 to 2008. He also was a three-time National Wrestling Coaches Association academic All-American and a three-year selection to the SoCon all-academic team.

As a 125-pounder, he was one of UTC's most successful wrestlers, and his 82 wins rank 10th on the school's all-time list.

But today, he returns to Maclellan Gym leading the first-year program at Southeastern University (Lakeland, Fla.), and this will be his first collegiate dual meet as a head coach.

Probable lineup

› 125: Alonzo Allen or Toribio Navarro

› 133: Chris DeBien

› 141: Roman Boylen

› 149: Andrew Webb or Jacob Murphy

› 157: Kamaal Shakur

› 165: Dominic Lampe

› 174: Sean Mappes, Justin Lampe or Barrett Walthall

› 184: John Lampe

› 197: Scottie Boykin

› 285: Jared Johnson

Southeastern's Fire will wrestle UTC at 9 a.m., and meets between the Fire and Cumberland University and Cumberland and UTC will follow.

When asked what he told his wrestlers about today's competition, Maldonado said, "Just compete, man; don't give up anything easy."

The Fire competed in The Citadel Open on Nov. 1 and in the Georgia College Open with Cumberland this past Sunday. Their top wrestler to date has been freshman 133-pounder Ethan Owen, who finished first at both tournaments. Owen has earned pins in six matches during a 10-0 start.

Cumberland, which also is opening its dual schedule, has four wrestlers listed among the top 20 in the latest NAIA rankings. Those four are No. 10 Austin Meyn (141 pounds), No. 13 Nate Croley (157), No. 3 Kyle Delaune (174) and No. 13 Tyler Smith (285).

Maldonado, who is married to former UTC softball player Amanda Hoiness — they have a 16-month-old son, Paxton — has been busy since he left Chattanooga. He worked for a year in New Mexico while his wife went for her master's degree before returning to his high school alma mater in Osceola, Fla., where he began work as an assistant wrestling coach for his father.

Then he received a call from Jack Spates, the renowned former Oklahoma coach, about Southeastern starting a wrestling program. A call from Southeastern athletic director Drew Watson followed.

"We started talking, I went and interviewed and got hired," Maldonado said.

When he was hired, Watson said, "Javier has both a high-level wrestling background and Florida connections, which make him the ideal choice to become our first head coach. More importantly, I believe he is a coach who has the ability to build a championship program the right way and get us competitive on the national scene quickly."

It has been quite a change for Maldonado.

"I feel like I'm treading water, at least some days, but I've been able to be around a lot of people for help and advice," he said. "It's fun because I'm doing wrestling for work."

Iowa wrestlers shatter NCAA outdoor attendance record

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - The wrestlers entered cavernous Kinnick Stadium in jackets and stocking caps, marching through pyrotechnics as the AC/DC song "Back in Black" blared through the loudspeakers.

The Iowa wrestling team beat top-ranked Oklahoma State 18-16 on Saturday, shattering the NCAA attendance record in front of 42,287 fans at the first meet held in a Division I football stadium.

Penn State set the previous mark of 15,996 in 2013.The boisterous crowd at Iowa is believed to be the biggest ever to see a wrestling match in the U.S.

Hawkeyes coach Tom Brands said the event will resonate internationally for a sport still just three years removed from briefly losing its Olympic status.

"It's great for wrestling. There are people in Russia, in Turkey and Iran that are going to see this as well," said Brands, a gold medalist at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. "They know about this. This is the city Dan Gable lives in."

Gable won Olympic gold in 1972 before coaching at Iowa for 21 years - winning 15 NCAA team titles with the Hawkeyes.

The idea of hosting a wrestling match at the 70,000-seat Kinnick Stadium had been kicked around for nearly a decade. But when Penn State broke Iowa's single-match attendance record, Brands quipped "we're going to Kinnick."

Iowa had a special mat marked with football yard lines placed in the south end zone at Kinnick. The crowd filled the end zone seats and stretched some 80 yards to the opposing 20-yard line. Iowa also streamed the event on its massive scoreboards for the many fans that could barely see it live.

Concerns about adverse conditions never came to pass, as sunny skies and temperatures in the low 50s greeted athletes, who said they were impressed by the atmosphere.

"That fire was hot," said Iowa wrestler Sammy Brooks, who flexed his biceps to the crowd after winning his match. "I tried to stay relaxed and focused on the things that I need to do. But it's hard when there are 42,000 screaming fans. You want to get up there with them and go nuts."

Officials set aside special rooms in the bowels of Kinnick Stadium for the wrestlers to keep warm if needed - though many of them stayed on the bench.

There were contingency plans to move the match to 15,000-seat Carver-Hawkeye Arena, Iowa's home gym, if the weather turned. Instead, fans soaked up the sun while watching their Hawkeyes make history.

"They took a lot of chances (on the weather)," said Hawkeyes fan Kim Trebil, who drove three hours from Clear Lake, Iowa, to watch the event. "We're supposed to get an inch of snow (next Saturday)."

The undefeated No. 8 Iowa football team capped off a big sports day in Iowa City by hosting Minnesota in the evening.
