YAIAA wrestling preview for 2015-16

Spring Grove's Dalton Rohrbaugh shouts after a pin on Red Lion's Jacob Frock last season. Rohrbaugh could help Spring Grove contend for the YAIAA Division I team title this season.

Spring Grove wrestling coach Tony Miller made a bit of an understatement when discussing his team’s trip to Tennessee this weekend.

“We were looking for something not in the area,†said the veteran coach. “It’s always more exciting seeing different teams.â€

The Rockets made an eight-hour drive to Kingsport, Tennessee, for the U.S. Air Force Indian Classic, which features teams from eight different states.

However, Miller’s squad will see at least one set of familiar faces as Red Lion is also making the trip.

Lions coach Chris Schell agrees with Miller regarding the appeal of the 35-team event.

“It’s nice to get away from Pennsylvania sometimes,†he said. “The kids won’t know who they are wrestling, so they can just go out and wrestle their best.â€

What they will know is some of the teams participating in Kingsport are among the best in their respective states. Five of the squads won team state titles last season.

The growth of the sport in the Southeast has been steady and, while the depth of states like North Carolina or Virginia, doesn’t compare to Pennsylvania, outstanding individual wrestlers can be found in the region.

Archer High School from Georgia is probably the strongest team in the field. The Tigers are winners of 89 consecutive dual matches and are currently ranked 13th in Intermat Wrestling’s Fab 50 high school team rankings.

The Lawrenceville, Georgia, team has four nationally-ranked individuals, led by the Bullard brothers, Thomas (No. 2 at 160) and Daniel (No. 3 at 170). Both will continue their careers next year at North Carolina State University.

The tournament will run on nine mats, making it even larger than the PIAA championships, which uses six mats.

“This will be new for most of our kids," Miller said. "Jake Meyer and Dalton (Rohrbaugh) went to Super 32 which would be similar," he added, mentioning the premier preseason tournament held in North Carolina. “For the other kids, this will be a whole different experience.â€

Schell believes the competition is only half the reason why the trip is worth the trouble.

“This is a great way to build team chemistry,†he said. “Once we get down there, we’re going to practice and then go back to the hotel for a movie night.â€

HIGH SCHOOL

Northwest has highest finish at SlamFest in over 15 years...

George Robinson/The Leaf-Chronicle

Clarksville High's Travis Bunner attempts to pin Houston's Jake Manuel during their match at SlamFest Saturday at William Workman Gym.

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.—  Northwest High's wrestling team is young, so coach Ben Smitherman understands a certain amount of growth will be needed on the mat before he is ready to call his Vikings a true contender.

But Saturday his team may have given its  head coach a reason to expect more sooner than he anticipated.

Clarksville High's Justin Brenot tries to turn Northwest's Deshawn Daill on his back during the first period of their match Saturday in the SlamFest tournament at William Workman Gym.

Northwest came into the 2015-16 wrestling season with little fanfare but of the District 10 teams that competed in Saturday's 18th annual SlamFest, hosted by Clarksville High, the Vikings were the area's top team.

The Vikings finished third overall after knocking off Rossview in the consolation championship, 45-30, Saturday at William Workman Gym.

It's the best SlamFest finish for Northwest in 15 years.

"People may think we're the team to beat in the District," Smitherman said. "I don't. We had one good day. The trick is to see if we can build on this an not have (Saturday) be an isolated occurrence.

"We have to be consistent this year. What does the future hold for Northwest? I don't know. These are high school kids. But our future could be bright. The sky's the limit. But right now, I'm just worried about our next match."

Rossview's Antonio Mariscal applies pressure to the head of Cookeville's Jack Wiggins during their match at SlamFest Saturday at William Workman Gym.

Northwest finished in first place in Pool B play, going 3-0. The Vikings knocked off McCracken County (Ky.), 55-23, then dropped Houston 47-34 and beat Clarksville High in a close match, 36-34.

"I thought we got our heads on straight and really did some good things on the mat," Smitherman said. "There was some growth out there, and that's encouraging to see."

The Vikings entered the tournament portion of SlamFest against Arlington, who promptly dispatched the Vikings 44-25. But Northwest recovered to beat Rossview in the third-place match.

Rossview joined Northwest, Arlington and Mt. Juliet as first-place finishers in their respective pools. The Hawks were 3-0 during Pool C play but were beaten by Mt. Juliet in the tournament portion before losing to Northwest to finish fourth overall.

Arlington would eventually capture the SlamFest title, beating Mt. Juliet, 41-33.

Clarksville High struggled without some of its key wrestlers and others who were either freshmen or first-year wrestlers.

The Wildcats finished third in Pool B behind Northwest and Houston with a 1-2 pool play record. The Wildcats knocked off Smyrna in the tournament, 47-32, but lost their final match to Cookeville to take 10th overall.

"We had a chance to tie if we got a pin and our kids gave it a great effort," CHS coach Tommy Badon said. "But he's inexperienced and couldn't quite figure out how to maneuver to get the pin. He had his opponent on his back but couldn't find the right way to get the pin."

Badon was disappointed that his team couldn't have competed for the SlamFest title but was happy with his team's effort. The Wildcats have mostly freshmen, one sophomore, three juniors and three seniors. One of those juniors and one senior are new to wrestling.

"I know Clarksville isn't used to not being in the SlamFest championship match, but I have faith that the program will turn around," he said. "It goes in cycles, and our freshman class is huge. We'll also have a huge freshman class the next two years, at least. So the future is extremely bright."

Northeast and Montgomery Central failed to advance to the tournament after finishing in last place in their pools. Both the Eagles and Indians lost all three of their pool-play matches.

Fort Campbell had a strong showing Saturday, finishing second behind Arlington in Pool A play. The Falcons lost to Houston in the tournament and finished eighth overall after losing to Franklin in the consolation bracket. Houston took fifth place while Hopkinsville (Ky.) took sixth. Smyrna finished 11th overall.

SMHS wrestling defeats Knox. Gibbs, Rhea Co.

The SMHS wrestling team beat Knoxville Gibbs and Rhea County on Thursday night by scores of 48-25 and 60-22, respectively. On Saturday, they finished fourth in the Seymour Duals Team Tournament with wins over Sevier County and Hardin Valley Academy. The Panthers lost in the semi-finals to Greeneville 31-40 and then lost another close match to Red Bank in the consolation finals, 43-35.

In the Gibbs match, the Panthers got wins from Dylan Kemmer, Pedro Villalobos, Masion Connock, Anthony Alegria, Marco Hernandez, Chandler Brickle, Ronnie Wyllins, Justin Johnson and Christian Gabbard.

“Gibbs is always a strong team with some really good individuals. I really thought the score would be closer, but our guys stepped in up and performed well,†SMHS coach Brian Parker said.

In the Rhea County match, SMHS got pins from Findley, Alegria, Hernandez, Brickle, Wyllins, and Johnson. Kemmer, Villalobos, Bowles and Connock received forfeits.

“Rhea always has a few tough kids but we were able to run through them tonight. They are rebuilding their feeder program and will be tough again soon,†Parker said.

In the Seymour Eagle Challenge, one individual match was the difference between each of the top five teams winning or losing their matches in the championship bracket. In other words, with 14 weight classes, if one wrestler reverses his individual result in any of those matches, his team would win. This was the case for the Panthers, as they missed being in the finals and possibly winning the finals by one individual match.

“This was a tough pill to swallow,†Coach Parker said. “With two starters, Ronnie Wyllins and Juan Loza, out of the line-up, we still barely lost our semi-final match to Greeneville and we could have given Halls (a top 10 team) a run for their money.â€

The Panthers beat Sevier County (65-15) and Hardin Valley (57-13) to win their pool. Kemmer, Jordan Bowles, Connock, Hernandez, Brickle, Jonah Richards, Elmer Estrada and Johnson had two wins each.   Conley, Findley, Alegria, Flannery, Brandon Burnett and Gabbard had one win each.

“We knew we would win the pool pretty easily, but Greeneville always has a lot of kids with experience. It showed in our barn-burner of a match in the semis.â€

Greeneville won eight matches to the Panthers six matches. The Panthers had pins from Alegria, Burnett, Kemmer and Connock, with decisions by Flanney and Johnson. Hernandez, Estrada and Findley lost by decisions.

“Anthony did a great job pinning a tough kid at 138 as did Burnett and Connock,†said Parker. “I thought Elmer should have won his match but made a critical mistake on a sit-out. Marco’s opponent at 145 was tougher than we thought he would be.â€

“When it came down to the last two matches, I switched Masion and Xavier to try to get pins at 126 and 132 to win the match. Masion did what I knew he could do even as a rookie and got the pin. Greeneville proved to be better than I had hoped at 132, so Xavier was unable to secure a win. I thought we wrestled then well but it was not in the cards for us today. Jonah wrestled tough for us at 170 against Greeneville, but being a rookie, he couldn’t hang with their experience. Not having Ronnie in the line-up today hurt us,†Coach Parker said.

The Panthers went on to face Red Bank in the consolation finals, losing another heart breaker in much the same manner as the semis. They secured wins by Findley, Connock, Alegria, Hernandez, Burnett and Johnson. Kemmer lost a close one by decision in the last seconds of the match.

“The whole day was bitter-sweet because on the one hand, we have seen that we can compete with all these teams but on the other hand, with a full line-up, we could win this event. Halls only beat Greenville in the finals by a few points. We will go back to the practice room and keep pushing ourselves to improve and be the best we can be,†Coach Parker said.

The SMHS wrestling team will be back in action at home on Thursday versus Hardin Valley and CCHS. Wrestling starts at 5:30.

Alexander wrestling team keeps county title streak alive

by Maurice Dixon

12:09 PM, Wednesday, December 16

Staff / Maurice Dixon

From left, Alexander wrestler Jordan Pounds and Lithia Springs wrestler Jordan McFarland.

Without much resistance, the Alexander wrestling team won its 13th consecutive Douglas County Championship title on Dec. 9.

First, the Cougars defeated Chapel Hill 83-4, afterwards Douglas County 76-6, then Lithia Springs 84-0 and finally New Manchester 76-3 to secure their 26th county championship.

“This is one of our goals,†Alexander coach Sean Moistner said. “We have a goal sheet that we fill out as a team and they fill out as individuals. It’s one of the goals to win the county because if you can’t take care of your own house then how are you going to take care of anything outside so it’s a big deal for us. We got things we have to work on but it’s exciting and important to us because it’s Douglas County--where we live.â€

Wrestlers London Dubroc (106 pounds), Vinnie Ferrara (120), Austin Starnes (126), Logan Dasaro (132), Trevor Rose (138), Little Nelson (145), Sam Allbritton (160), Cole Driskell (170), Conner Perry (195) and Leo Aylsworth (220) all finished with a record of 4-0 in the event. Jordan Pounds (285) had a 3-0 outing.

“We are happy we won it but we focus and work harder on bigger tournaments,†Dubroc said.

“I was really proud of Ferrara,†Moistner said. “Right now, he has been wrestling at 120 and 126 pounds but he is on a weight descent plan to get to 113. I’m real excited about him. Perry just got out of football two weeks ago so he’s really starting to pick things up. Those guys are doing a good job of just picking up what they need to do and what we are asking them to do on a regular basis.â€

With wins over Lithia Springs, Chapel Hill and finally New Manchester, Douglas County finished in second place just ahead of the Jaguars.

“I think we had several individuals who dug really deep and came today to wrestle,†Douglas County coach James Couch said. “They drilled, worked hard and did what they learned. I’m real proud of my guys. It’s hard to take a loss to Alexander but they are on top and who we got our sights on.â€

“Douglas County is always going to be tough and New Manchester is going to be tough,†Moistner said. “They have numbers and they have really good athletes. They just do a good job with what they got. Douglas County is always somebody we look forward to getting a pretty good fight out of.â€

Even though Alexander’s county championship streak continued, this was the first time the Cougars captured the title in their new gymnasium.

“It’s real special,†Moistner said. “I was nervous about the setup and presentation. The superintendent (Dr. Gordon Pritz) was here. The principal (Nathan Hand) was here so I wanted to make sure everything looked right from the outside so people would appreciate what we have because we appreciate it.â€

This Friday and Saturday, the Cougars will travel to Tennessee for the Bradley County Invitational.

“Bradley is ranked in the top 25 in the nation,†Moistner said. “Gilmer will be there. They are the defending champs in 4A. There are going to be numerous state championship teams there so I’m excited about that then we have the ALX Invitational on Jan. 2, which is always tough, and Kell will be here.â€

Based on what the team lost from last year, Moistner believes the team is in good shape as the postseason draws near.

“We’re young so we still have a little bit of an up-and-down situation as far as we allow ourselves to maybe not wrestle at the level we should so we are looking for consistency,†Moistner said. “We graduated 16 seniors last year. Of those 16, we had five state placers, including four state champs so that is a big deal but the young guys are ahead of where we thought they would be.â€

Brown left the Alexander gym just as optimistic about his group of competitors.

“We got a lot of work to do and we are going to go hard the rest of the way,†he said. “I believe in this team. They have a lot of heart.â€

ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio wrestling team continues its dual action after opening the season 3-1 by traveling to Tennessee-Chattanooga on Friday to take on the Mocs with matches beginning at 6 p.m. ET.

Ohio is coming off its first dual loss of the season dropping a 27-9 decision at Mizzou.

Mocs Drop 18-14 Match to No. 17 Ohio

UTC wins four matches in the loss.

Dec. 18, 2015 Wrestling

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team battled No. 17 Ohio in an 18-14 loss in Maclellan Gym tonight. The Mocs won four matches, scoring bonus points in two, but could not pull off the upset at home.

There were six matches tonight that went down to the wire. UTC was only able to capture two of the close ones as they drop to 4-2 on the year. Ohio improved to 4-1 overall.

"Obviously, we wanted to get the win, but I was proud of our effort and attitude tonight," stated head coach Heath Eslinger. "One more takedown in any of those four close ones and we come out on top.

"Regardless, we fought in every match and that's what we want to see from our guys every night. There are a lot of things for us to work on to get better, but there were a lot of positives tonight."

The dual opened at 125 and UTC freshman Alonzo Allen found himself in a big hole early. He gave up three takedowns and four back points to trail 10-2 after the first period. He battled back with a takedown in the second, and put four more points up in the third before falling 11-8.

Sophomore Cody Hill also lost a close one at 133, falling 7-6 to Cameron Kelly. Junior Michael Pongracz remained undefeated on the year with his 3-1 win over Noah Forrider at 141. He scored a takedown in overtime to improve to 9-0.

After an Ohio win at 149, freshman Kamaal Shakur took the mat against Ohio senior Spartak Chino. Chino came into the match with a 12-3 record and a top-10 ranking in a number of polls. Shakur set the tone early with a takedown and eventually scored a 4-3 victory to improve to 12-2. That made the team score 9-6 in favor of the Bobcats.

Ohio went on to win the next three matches to nearly put it out of reach at 18-6. Senior John Lampe had a chance at 184, but he lost to Andrew Romanchik (4-1) in another tight bout.

Junior's Scottie Boykin and Jared Johnson scored major decision wins at 197 and heavyweight to close out the match.

UTC is back in action on Sunday when they host Southern Illinois-Edwardsville at 1:00 p.m. (E.S.T.). Links for live scoring and live video are available on the wrestling schedule page on GoMocs.com.
