Steve Henry Honored At Soddy Daisy High School

Veteran Wrestling Coach Recognized With Wrestling Building Being Renamed

Friday, January 22, 2016 - by John Hunt

Steve Henry is finally being honored and recognized for a lifetime of service to Soddy Daisy High School.

Henry, the personable 60-year-old coach. teacher and administrator, spent 29 years as the head coach for the wrestling Trojans where he compiled an impressive record of 515 wins, 170 defeats and three ties.  During that time, his teams also won seven state championships, including three traditional titles and four duals titles.

And now, some three years after giving up his title of head coach and being promoted to athletic director and assistant principal, the Hamilton County Board of Education recently made a positive move by renaming the Soddy Daisy Wrestling Arena as the Steve Henry Athletic Facility.

If you've followed prep wrestling in the Chattanooga area at all, you have probably been to the old Soddy Daisy High School, located on Highway 27.  When the school was moved to its current location on Sequoyah Access Road back in the mid 80s, Henry was just starting his program and seized the opportunity of using an old gymnasium that was probably destined to be demolished.

Spending literally hundreds of hours since that time, what had been a dilapidated old building is now one of the finest wrestling facilities around.

"It's hard to find someone at the same school as long as Steve has been at Soddy Daisy, but he's the only person at the new school who worked at the old one," said Danny Gilbert, the current principal at Soddy Daisy and one of Henry's best friends.

"Without Steve's effort, that building would have been torn down a long time ago, but a lot of folks use that wrestling building and the soccer fields down below.  It's amazing the kids who have come through those doors, but Steve was never satisfied and was always looking for ways to make it better.

"Steve Henry is a wrestling legend across the state of Tennessee and that's not why we're renaming that building in his honor.  It's because of the love and the sweat and the hundreds of hours he's spent making it what it is today.  It's a total credit to him and his parents," Gilbert praised his buddy.

Henry just celebrated his 60th birthday on Oct. 5.  He's a 1974 graduate of Red Bank High School where he lettered in football, wrestling and track.  He then attended MTSU where he earned his degree in 1979 while running track for the Blue Raiders for two years.

His teaching career began with a three-month stint at Central before spending a year at both East Ridge High and Soddy Daisy Junior.  He then moved to Soddy Daisy High School in 1983 and that's where he's been ever since.

He married his wife Jeannie in the early 90s they are the proud parents of twin daughters Kelsey and Kaley, who were born in 1997.  They are and have been three of his biggest cheerleaders.

In those 29 years as the head man for the Trojans, Henry built a tough program built on hard work and doing things the right way.  He proudly admits that he learned a lot from the late Luke Worsham, who coached at Baylor for many years, and that he also paid special attention when he was around other notable coaches like Gordon Connell  and Jim Morgan.

Henry hesitates to say how many individual state champions he's coached in that time, but he's made a huge impact on thousands of young men, including current head coach Jim Higgins.

"This is something we've been wanting to do for a long time and it's long overdue to say the least," Higgins said early Friday morning.

"As much as Steve Henry has done and as much as he's contributed to the success of our wrestling program, this is for sure the right thing to do.  Steve always liked being the leader and he believed in what he was doing.  That's been his life work.  He's always there to help out when I need his guidance and he still likes to come workout with us when time allows.

"But Steve has always tried to create something people can be proud of.  He has succeeded in doing that and he changed my life.  I used to be real shy and introverted, but he urged me to be the best I could be and my life has never been the same," Higgins added.

When asked about his most memorable experience as a high school wrestling coach, Henry had a hard time answering the question.

"Our team winning a state championship the first time was certainly special, but there hasn't been just one defining moment for me.  I've been blessed to have a bunch of young men who made our program successful through a ton of hard work," Henry related.

"We've had a lot of state champions and I'll never forget Campbell Lewis, who was our first four-time state champ.  But we've also had a bunch of studs who never won a state title," the Greater Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame inductee added.

Gilbert was hoping to keep this latest honor a secret until Tuesday when the Trojans will host Bradley in a key dual meet for both teams.  Unfortunately, the word got out much sooner.

"I really didn't know what was going on at the start.  Ernie McCarson called me yesterday to congratulate me on the new building and I didn't have a clue what he was talking about," Henry explained.

Finally Gilbert had to explain what all the hoopla was about as word continued to spread about the latest good news.

"It's a strange feeling for sure and I don't feel like I deserve it. My top priority has always been the kids and helping them to be their best, but this is an awkward situation for me.  It's overwhelming to say the least.

"When I first went to Soddy Daisy, we practiced in that old gym and it was perfect for what we needed.  We moved to the new school and we just didn't have much area in which to work and somebody suggested we stay at the old place.

"The downstairs was all locked up, but we used the top floor.  I reached the point where I started painting the place to help make it ours.  We've spent countless hours working over there, but it's been a community effort and that is what makes it so special for me.

"A lot of different teams have used that facility through the years and there have been some great matches where the place was packed.  But it's nice to see hard work pay off as it can be such a roller coaster ride at times.  But for all of the great friends I've made that have been life-lasting, it's been a wonderful experience for me," Henry concluded.

Six Mocs Listed in NCAA Rankings

UTC leads the SoCon with six in the top 33 in the NCAA Coaches Panel rankings.

Jan. 22, 2016 Wrestling

STORY LINKS

NCAA RELEASES WRESTLING COACHES' PANEL RANKINGS.

The NCAA released the first of four coaches' panel rankings for the 2015-16 wrestling season this week. As usual, the Chattanooga Mocs were well represented. The final rankings will be one of the tools used as part of the selection process to determine the qualifiers for the 2016 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.

UTC put six in the rankings, led led by junior Jared Johnson. He is 18-3 overall and No. 13 at heavyweight. His only losses are to wrestlers currently in the top 10.

Junior Michael Pongracz is next at No. 22 at 141. He is 17-2 and on a five-match winning streak. Senior John Lampe is No. 23 at 184 with his 9-1 mark. Junior Scottie Boykin is also No. 23 at 197 with a 14-6 record.

Freshman Kamaal Shakur checks in at No. 24 at 157. He is 19-5 in his first season of competition and leads the team in overall wins. Junior Sean Mappes, last year's SoCon Champ at 174, is No. 33 with a 13-7 record.

Wrestlers in each weight class are measured by winning percentage, rating percentage index (RPI) and coaches' rankings to earn spots in the qualifying tournaments for the 2016 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.

The coaches' rankings are compiled by a vote of coaches representing each qualifying tournament. For ranking purposes, coaches may only consider a wrestler that has been designated as a starter at a respective weight class. In order to be eligible for the rankings, wrestlers must have participated in at least five matches against Division I opponents in the weight class and have wrestled within the last 30 days.

UTC's six in the rankings lead the Socon, and Appalachian State follows with four. The Mountaineers are also No. 25 in this week's NWCA/USA Today Coaches Poll. Campbell and The Citadel are next with three each, while Gardner-Webb has one.

The Mocs are back in action on Jan. 31 when they travel to Davidson. The final home match of the year is a big one against the Mountaineers on Friday, Feb. 5, in Maclellan Gym. Tickets are on sale now on GoMocs.com or by calling the UTC Ticket Office at (423) 266-MOCS (6627).

Bradley Matmen Put 53-19 Whipping On Soddy Daisy

Bears Get Seven Pins As They Improve To 19-2 With The Lopsided Victory

Tuesday, January 26, 2016 - by John Hunt

The Bradley Bears took care of business at Soddy Daisy Tuesday night.

There have been some great wrestling matches between these two teams in years past, but this latest clash wasn’t one of them as the Bears put an old-fashioned whipping on the hosts.

The final score was 53-19, but it really wasn’t that close.

These two teams split the first six matches, but the Bears were still ahead 18-13 after getting pins from Ed Elkins, Brett Brown and D.

J. Adams at the start.

Bradley then put the hammer down by winning the next seven matches for a commanding 53-13 lead before the Bears forfeited to Tucker Russo at 160 pounds in the final match of the evening.

“What I want to know is the Cleveland-Walker Valley score,†said Bradley coach Ben Smith as soon as this match ended, knowing that his team will face the loser in the semifinals of the Region Duals, which will be at Soddy Daisy High School on Thursday.

Cleveland defeated Walker Valley by a 44-21 score, meaning that Bradley will face Walker Valley in one semifinal while Soddy Daisy and Cleveland will battle in the other. Both semifinal winners will advance to the State Duals, which will be in Franklin next weekend.

“I’m glad that we won as this gives us a district championship and sets us up for the number one seed next week if we get there. All I know is that they took it to us two years ago in this gym and I wanted to remind my guys of that fact. Tonight, we just wanted to do what we were capable of doing, knowing the final score would take care of itself,†the scrappy and emotional coach continued.

“We were fortunate to come out on top as we were better in a few spots. We got a lot of bonus points, including a bunch of pins, but Soddy Daisy has a pretty good team. We aren’t a sure lock for next weekend as there are at least four teams capable of winning, but it’s just a matter of who shows up.

“I was really proud of my 145-pounder Austin Matthews, who beat a state-ranked kid. I want to give him a shout out for a job well done. Overall I’m pretty happy with our performance tonight, but we still have to get a lot better and we still have a lot to improve on,†Smith added.

“We just got our tails whipped, but Bradley has a solid team and they came ready to wrestle tonight,†said Soddy Daisy coach Jim Higgins afterward.

“Bradley wrestled well and we didn’t. That’s the most pins we’ve given up all year as we just didn’t show up. There’s no question we’re a better team than that, but our first goal is to get back to Franklin for the Duals and we still have a shot at that. I’m guessing that we’ll get Cleveland on Thursday,†Higgins added.

The Bears, improving to 19-2 with Tuesday’s win, finished with seven pins. Heavyweight Adams was the quickest as he took just 24 seconds to get the fall call.

While Elkins, Brown and Adams got the ball rolling early, T.J. Hicks, Ryan McElhaney and Joshua LaCoe had consective falls to give Bradley a commanding 36-13 lead following the match at 126.

Hunter Parker made it 39-13 with a 9-2 decision at 132 while Knox Fuller got the last pin in 2:18 at 138. Matthews then posted a 3-0 decision over Conner Stiles at 145 before Donnie Beyer added five team points with a technical fall at 152.

Soddy Daisy’s Russo, a two-time defending state champ, then got a forfeit at 160 to end the match.

While Russo got the only forfeit, Landon Wheaton had Soddy Daisy’s only pin at 106. Ty Boeck had a major decision at 182 while Addison Roberts posted a 6-3 decision at 220 for the remaining points for the Trojans.

Soddy Daisy is now 11-3 following Tuesday’s match.

The Youthful Hill Working to Topper Up to that Most Timely Peak...

http://www.johnsoncitypress.com/Wrestling/2016/01/28/Big-7-champion-Science-Hill-ready-for-duals

ready for duals

JEFF BIRCHFIELDʉۢ TODAY AT 6:01 PM

jbirchfield@johnsoncitypress.com 423-722-0551

The Science Hill wrestling team heads into Friday night’s Region 1-AAA duals at Jefferson County fresh off winning the Big Seven Conference championship.

Over the past couple of weeks, the Hilltoppers have defeated both Dobyns-Bennett and defending Region 1 champion Tennessee High.

The Hilltoppers, who started the season with a varsity lineup of three seniors, two juniors, eight sophomores and a freshman were huge underdogs against Tennessee High, but they won eight of 13 contests in a 43-24 victory over the Vikings.

“We felt that was a must-win for us, for our program, for the goals we’ve set,†Science Hill coach Jimmy Miller said. “We felt going into the match we had a chance. It’s a testament to these kids, to our program, that they could reach the lofty goals for themselves We are young, but the kids are wrestling well and they’ve bought into the program.â€

Miller explained in the dual competition that it’s important for a team to maximize points whenever possible.

Science Hill was able to do that with three falls, starting with Hunter Bagley pinning the Vikings’ Kenneth Haggerman in just 55 seconds in the heavyweight class.

Denzel Medina took just 27 seconds to pin Logan Fields at 170 pounds and Cooper Williams also scored a fall in his 120 match.

Also important was Luke Story, earning a major decision at 126, and Grayson Pridemore gutting out an 11-8 decision at 132.

Other winners were: Alden Bailey at 195, Stephen Grant at 220 and Arthur James at 152.

Besides the wins, it was important that Weston Brown at 182 and William Diehl at 138 each pushed their matches to decisions.

“We preached at them for weeks and weeks to go do your job, whatever that job is,†Miller said. “We all have a job whether it’s a weaker opponent, how you need to get those bonus points or if we’re matched up against a better kid, we want to push that match into a decision and make it go six minutes.â€

In the 40-20 win over Dobyns-Bennett, Diehl, Williams, Pridemore and Story all pinned their opponents.

Heavyweight Austin Taylor, Bagley at 220, Brown at 182, James at 152 and Dorian Butler at 113 also picked up wins, while the Hilltoppers had just one pin and no technical falls count against them.

“We said that we’re not going to get pinned and give up the silly back points,†Miller said. “When you do that, the score takes care of itself.â€

Science Hill will face Morristown East in Friday’s Region 1-AAA semifinals with Tennessee High to wrestle host Jefferson County in the other semifinal. The two winners advance to the championship round and advance to the state dual meet to be held Feb. 5-6 in Franklin.

With the toughness the group has shown so far, their coach is optimistic about their opportunity to advance.

“We feel good about our chances going in,†Miller said. “We won’t overlook Morristown East. They’ve got some good kids in the lineup. Hopefully, we can win that and then wait for the winner of the Tennessee High and Jefferson County match.â€

Norton High School co-captain Devin Schuko had a 27-0 record when he faced off against Andy Howland, a wrestler at neighboring Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School in Massachusetts, who has Down syndrome.

The match went quickly, with Howland forcing Schuko to the mat and pinning him for the win. They shook hands and Schuko went back to his bench, while Howland celebrated with his coaches and teammates.

Schuko didn't make a big fuss, but his act of sportsmanship didn't go unnoticed.

Jeff Roberts and his Beech Boys Hard Works Earn them Another Trip to State Duals...

Buccaneers book return trip to state

By Chris Brooks, Gallatin News Examiner January 29, 2016

HENDERSONVILLE The Beech High wrestling program has been making the state tournament a yearly stop in its schedule.

Beech High sophomore Kyle Smith lifts Wilson Central junior Daniel Hills during their bout in Thursday’s Region 7-AAA Dual Tournament championship match. Smith pinned Hills, but the Buccaneers suffered a 40-24 loss to the Wildcats.

The host Buccaneers clinched a berth in the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) State Dual Tournament for the fifth consecutive season with a 49-24 victory over Rossview on Thursday evening in the Region 7-AAA Tournament.

Beech’s effort fell a bit short in the championship match as Wilson Central won its fourth consecutive regional championship, handing the Buccaneers a 40-27 loss.

“By the time we got (to the championship round), I think we were trying to look too far ahead, and we didn’t focus on the matches,†Buccaneer senior Kaleb Rippy said. “The matches that we thought that we could win, we didn’t win.â€

Kaleb Rippy

Beech pulled away from Rossview in the semifinals with pinfall victories (worth six points each) from sophomore Kyle Smith in the 170-pound weight class and Kaleb Rippy in the 182-pound division, giving the Buccaneers a 28-12 lead.

Senior Peyton Reinart (285-pound division), junior Jacob Andrews (106) and senior Wyatt Sipe (113) closed the match with pinfall victories of their own.

Beech High freshman Jacob Andrews maintains control over Rossview freshman Zaden Webber during Thursday’s Region 7-AAA Dual Tournament semifinals. Andrews pinned Webber in the Buccaneers’ 49-24 victory over the Hawks.

“It feels pretty good,†Kaleb Rippy said. “I just think we need to work for the next week, work harder in practice and get ready. We need to focus on things we did wrong tonight.â€

Sophomore Trevor Rippy earned Beech’s first points against Wilson Central with a pinfall victory in the 145-pound class, but Beech never led the match as the Wildcats slowly pulled away.

“I think I wrestled pretty well tonight, but as a team, I think we could have done better,†Trevor Rippy said. “We had a couple of matches that could have went either way, and we lost them when we shouldn’t have.â€

Trevor Rippy

Kaleb Rippy added, “I think Wilson Central works a lot harder, and we just didn’t wrestle Wilson Central as hard as we did Rossview. We were looking at Wilson Central, but we were making sure that we wanted to win against Rossview.â€

Smith, Kaleb Rippy (195) and freshman Brayden Palmer (106) provided Beech’s other pinfall triumphs, while freshman Jeremiah Herron had the other Buccaneer victory by a decision (worth three points).

“It’s our fifth straight year getting to go (to state), so that’s a big thing,†Beech head coach Jeff Roberts said. “We had our shots (against Wilson Central), but we didn’t capitalize on them when we needed to. Wilson Central’s tough. There’s a reason they’re three-time state runner-ups.â€

The Buccaneers turn their attention to the state tournament, slated to be held from Feb. 5-6 at the Williamson County Expo Center in Franklin.

Beech High junior Joseph Garrett maintains control over Rossview junior Cesar Romero during Thursday’s Region 7-AAA Dual Tournament semifinals. Garrett won the bout by a major decision as the Buccaneers clinched a spot in the state tournament with a 49-24 victory over the Hawks.

Beech suffered a 48-18 loss to eventual state champion Cleveland in last year’s semifinals. The Buccaneers finished in fourth place, the best finish in school history.

“They always come strong out of Chattanooga,†Trevor Rippy said. “They’ve always been on top it seems, since I’ve been here, and they’re going to be a hard match, just like we had against Wilson Central.â€

The Rippy brothers enter the state tournament with a combined record of 81-2. Kaleb Rippy holds a 44-2 mark after Thursday’s action, while Trevor Rippy remained undefeated (37-0).

“Every match will be pretty much like the one we just had,†Roberts said. “We’ve just got to keep it up, get the freshmen some experience and get them state experience also.â€

The Buccaneer program is gaining momentum with each trip to Franklin.

“It’s a great feeling to see the board with all of our state medalists,†Trevor Rippy said. “It went from three to almost 20 now (in the last four years), and it’s just going to keep getting bigger. The program, and Middle Tennessee wrestling, is getting better.â€

The Class AAA tournament begins on Friday at 3 p.m., with the quarterfinals slated for 7 p.m. Semifinal action begins at 1 p.m. on Saturday, with the finals at 7 p.m.

And some friendly competition at 132...

McCallie's Trent Walliser and Baylor's Jack Reynolds at 132 pounds

“We are friends before and after the match, but for those six minutes on the mat we are opponents. We haven’t wrestled each other in 10 years.â€

Baylor’s Jack Reynolds who faces McCallie’s Trent Walliser today at 5 p.m.

They wrestled thirtysomething times as kids and neither wrestler knows the exact win-loss total.

A decade later, McCallie’s Trent Walliser and Baylor’s Jack Reynolds meet one more time today (5 p.m. at McCallie) in the 132 pound match.

“We wrestled each other in kids’ tournaments all the time when we were six, seven and eight years old,†said Walliser a 17-year-old senior and first year McCallie wrestler.

“I would win one week and Jack would win the next and we did that for three years until we were in different weight classes.â€

Walliser wrestled for the Tornado Kids Club, while Reynolds, whose dad wrestled for Notre Dame, wrestled for St. Jude and later for UTC kids club.

A look at the two wrestlers journey to today’s match

Jack Reynolds â€¦ Sr. Age: 18 … now in his fourth year on the varsity and is veteran of the McCallie-Baylor mat wars at 2-2 … has two individual state medals and a member of two Baylor state championship teams .. also competes in cross-country and track … won a state AAU title as a fifth grader … Attended St. Jude elementary and has been in the Baylor wrestling program since the sixth grade … has a 3.6 GPA and headed to the U. of Tennessee in the fall to study business

Trent Walliser â€¦ Sr. Age: 17 …has taken quite a different path to today’s match … five schools, two season-ending injuries … a heart-breaking loss in the 2014 state finals for Lookout Valley … will attend Union College in Jackson, Tenn. and plans to be a youth pastor .. multiple youth state champ .

He is on the short list of those who have wrestled for three schools … started at Chattanooga Christian as an eighth grader … hit by a car while riding his bike prior to his ninth grade year and was told by doctors he would never wrestle again.

“I had put too many hours and years in the sport to quit.â€

In other words slim, none and fat chance he was going to give up.

He was the top wrestler in his region as a ninth grader and had recovered from the leg injury, but infection set in and his goal to become a state champion was stopped.

He transferred to Lookout Valley for the 2013-14 season and was ahead in the state finals, but his opponent pinned him with a head throw.

“That was the most devastating loss in my career as I was so close to a state championship.â€

Injury No.2: an ACL tear in his right knee at a summer wrestling camp sidelined him for the 2014-15 season which allowed him to transfer to any school without losing an extra year.

“I am grateful for having wrestled at CCS and Lookout Valley, but I have always wanted to wrestle for a team and have a chance at a state title and McCallie is the perfect fit for me.

Evidently so, as he posted a 4.0 GPA in the fall semester.

The McCallie coaches have taught me so much in the way of technique this season, while CCS coach Josh Craft had me in my best wrestling shape ever.â€

So today around dinner time, two teenagers - one wearing red and other blue - who have gained and given up take downs and reverses and have had their hands raised in victory meet again as seniors.

The crowd will watch and cheer as a pair old friends meet in the squared circle maybe for the last time.

Note: Three Schools - One other wrestler who competed for three schools in Tenn. is Josh Deckelman … started out at Tullahoma … transferred to Baylor … then transferred to Soddy Daisy and his win in the 2012 state duals final clinched the team title for the Trojans … .. then transferred to Notre Dame but did not wrestle … moved to California with his dad and wrestled his senior year on the west coast.

Key wins from senior Jack Reynolds at 132 and ninth grader Mason Reiniche at 160 propelled Baylor to a come from behind 30-27 win Saturday in a D-II Middle/East wrestling match at McCallie.

Wrestling before a standing room only crowd, McCallie won six of the first nine matches for a 27-13, but Baylor won the final five weight classes worth 17 points and the win.

“Both teams have excellent wrestlers in the heart of the lineup, you work hard to have your guys prepared and we were able to come out on top,†said Baylor head coach Ben Nelson

“I think our conditioning paid off today and I believe we are peaking at the right time.â€

With McCallie leading 27-13, Reynolds defeated long-time foe Trent Walliser, 6-1, to start the Baylor rally.

“The key to my win was my ability to feed off the energy of the crowd and also just to focus on my technique,†said a smiling Reynolds who is now 3-2 overall in matches against McCallie.

Red Raiders Austin Atchley posted a major decision (13-4) against Thomas Sell (138), followed by Michael Murphy’s 6-4 triumph against Ethan Dendy in a re-match of the 2015 state finals to make it 27-23 McCallie.

Reiniche then upset state champion Will Patton, 6-1, and senior Caleb Powell clinched the team win with a 10-1 major decision against Turner Rowland.

Reiniche, a 2015 state runner-up said, “I felt confident going into the match and  getting the first takedown was key and I felt it broke him,â€

McCallie sprinted to the big lead due in large part on pins from Judah Duhm (170), Trel Phillps (195) and Zack Ward (106).

Baylor now leads the overall series, 52-40 and have won 14 straight. McCallie’s last win was in the 2006 state duals finals.

McCallie coach Mike Newman said,“We got bonus points where we needed them (9 points from three pins), but it came down to Baylor won eight matches and we only won six.

“Our guys fought hard, but we only have ourselves to blame for the loss. “To Baylor’s credit, they stepped up and won the final five matches.â€

Tullahoma attempted to cut into a 30-6 deficit with back-to-back pinfall victories, making it 30-18, against Blackman on Thursday night. However, the effort fell short and the Wildcats were ousted from the Region 5-AAA Tournament with a 42-30 at Coffee County Central High School.

After Cal Rogers picked up a pinfall win in the second round of the 106-pound bout for Tullahoma, Blackman followed with back-to-back victories to seal the victory in the region semifinal matchup.

Zack Dallas pinned Josh Fournier in 36 seconds in the 113-pound division before Tullahoma forfeited the 120-pound bout, to give the Blaze a 42-18 lead with just two matches remaining.

The loss ended the duals season for the Wildcats, who missed making the TSSAA State Duals Wrestling Championship. Tullahoma advanced to the state duals in 2015 with a win over Cookeville at region.

While duals season has ended, several Wildcats will try to advance to the TSSAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament. The road to the state individual tournament gets underway on Feb. 12 and 13 when the Region 5-AAA Individual Tournament takes place at Cookeville High School.

After beating Tullahoma, Blackman wasn’t finished there. The Blaze captured the Region 5-AAA Championship with a narrow 32-31 victory over Siegel, who beat Shelbyville Central on Thursday, 58-15. The Blaze and Stars each clinched their seat in the state duals, scheduled to take place on Feb. 5 and 6 at the Williamson County Ag Expo Center in Franklin.

Tullahoma opened with the first win against Blackman on Thursday, after Aaron Kelly scored a pinfall victory in the 138-pound class. With an 8-3 lead after one round, Kelly pinned Elijah Cox with 16.3 seconds left in the second round, to give the Wildcats the early 6-0 lead.

Blackman went on to record seven-straight wins to take control of the contest, putting together a 30-6 lead. (Landon Fowler - True Freshman with 30+ wins) notched an 8-4 decision victory over Dylan McElhaney in the 145-pound bout before Cole Tillman recorded a 3-0 decision win over Zack Bonee in the 152-pound class, to tie the match at 6.

Two quick pinfall victories, mixed with a forfeit win, quickly elevated Blackman’s lead as the Blaze took a 24-6 advantage. Matthew Sells pinned Garrett Jennings in 41 seconds in the 160-pound bout before Vincent Cross defeated Brenden Adkins by pinfall in 27 seconds in the 170-pound class. Hunter Winters notched a win going unopposed in the 182-pound division.

The Blaze again added to its lead with back-to-back decision wins in pivotal matchups. In the 195-pound bout, Tullahoma’s Dylan Pearson was upended by Andre Bravo. With the score tied at 1 late in the third period, Pearson was called for a stalling penalty, giving Bravo a point. The Blackman grappler followed with a late takedown to notch the 4-1 decision victory.

Sam Luker followed with a 5-0 decision victory over Akil Hicks in the 220-pound matchup. Down 3-0 after the second round, Hick was called twice for stalling, giving Luker two points, as he went on to get the victory to give Blackman a 30-6 advantage.

Luke Champion notched the first of back-to-back victories for Tullahoma, capturing a win in the 285-pound bout. Leading 3-1 after two rounds, Champion pinned Jamil Hughes 22 seconds into the third round.

Rogers followed with a second-round pinfall for Tullahoma in the 106-pound matchup. With a 10-2 lead, the Wildcat grappler pinned Liam Elam with 2.2 seconds remaining in the second period to cut THS’ deficit to 30-18.

Dallas notched his win over Fournier in the 113-pound matchup before Blackman’s Tre’von Thomas followed with a win after going unopposed in the 120-pound division to give the Blaze a 42-18 lead.

Luke Price and Cleveland Cyree closed out the match with back-to-back wins after Blackman forfeited both matchups. Price won his matchup in the 126-pound division while Cyree won his in the 132-pound class.

    • RR, you might remember. Didn’t someone hide the kicking shoe that game? It seems I remember we had missed a kick the week before, and we needed all the points we could get. We thought we had a better chance going for two, so $?&@$ hid the shoe after the first miss that game. No one on our sideline looked for it very hard.
    • I will never forget the 1983 Heritage vs Maryville game. I remember driving home and listening to WGAP. Can't remember the announcers name. He asked Coach Story why he kept going for 2? Story told him " Why didn't you ask Renfro that last year"
    • TSSAA will let them all go to Mase.
    • Well nothing new, the Mustangs are really talented again this coming season!  They very well could go undefeated in regular season.  We shall see what happens in postseason.  I think the path to state title game is a little clearer than years past.  I think the Stangs are going to be really good and I think the traditional teams around in 2A are not going to be as strong.  It should be a fun season!
