Inspiring for coaches and wrestlers...

Before I paste this, one must wonder and think this should be considered, reduced team points for the team where the coach declares a wrestler invaluable to continue and the next match will be a injury default.

I mean, let's put a bandaid on this and go in a couple of hours?

(Somewhat unrelated Side note: dual situation opposite, if a team FF's with eligible Wrestlers in that weight, 7-8 Pts awarded, not 6)

Soddy-Daisy's two-time state champ out of tournament after controversial decision, Bradley Central advances nine

FRANKLIN, Tenn. — It was no surprise that Bradley Central advanced nine wrestlers to the Tennessee Class AAA state quarterfinals or that the Bears scored 83.5 first-day points.

It was a shock, however, that Soddy-Daisy senior 160-pounder Tucker Russo, a two-time state champion, won't be among the quarterfinalists.

The unbeaten Russo, who has yet to give up an offensive point this season and who was making a strong bid for the tournament's outstanding wrestler award, was dropped into the consolation bracket on a questionable illegal-slam call.

"I'm gut-sick," said longtime Trojans coach Steve Henry, who is filling in with Brad Laxton for head coach Jim Higgins. "I went to the table — knew I had to fight for him — but I went knowing there was nothing I could do. I just hate the principle behind the call."

Russo was up 5-0 in the first period, and when his opponent — Smyrna's Tyrone Johnson — stood up, Russo took him back to the mat. The referee determined that Russo used too much force, and he awarded a penalty point to Johnson.

Although cleared by a trainer, Johnson was not allowed by his coach to continue. The rule is that if a wrestler is injured with an "illegal hold" such as a slam and cannot continue, then that wrestler is awarded the win.

According to Soddy-Daisy parents, Johnson later approached them and apologized, saying he had wanted to continue and didn't want to win that way. He also said he got overruled by his coach.

Henry has known Russo for years and actually got him started in wrestling years ago in the Trojans' kids club program.

"In all the years I coached, the two most emotional matches for me were when Tucker lost in the semis his freshman year and tonight," Henry said. "All I could tell him was people that know the sport know what happened."

Bradley Central, in a night that otherwise wasn't very kind to Region 4 teams, positioned itself nicely for both individual and team championships.

"Not ready to relax yet," Bears coach Ben Smith said. "I remember years as a wrestler and as an assistant when we had pretty sizable leads and then stumbled a little in the quarterfinals."

Bradley led its nearest competitor by nearly 30 points, as Region 8 champion Arlington scored 54. Maryville Heritage, Tennessee High, Gibbs and Beech were in a four-point spread from Heritage's 52 to Beech's 48. Cleveland and Soddy-Daisy were tied for seventh with 47.5, and Wilson Central and Independence were deadlocked in ninth with 43.5.

Walker Valley had 32 points and was tied for 18th.

Eight of the nine Bears twice scored bonus points via major decision, forfeit, pin or technical fall. Those advancing were T.J. Hicks (113 pounds), Ryan McElhaney (120), Josha LaCoe (126), Hunter Parker (132), Knox Fuller (138), Austin Mathews (145), Donnie Beyer (152), Brett Brown (195) and D.J. Adams (285).

Cleveland had four wrestlers advance — Bryce Pond (106), Triston Blansit (126), Colton Landers (132) and Jack Hicks (170) — and Soddy-Daisy had three in Charles Wheaton (106), Emory Holcomb (138) and Ty Boeck (182).

Walker Valley has two quarterfinalists in Joseph Munoz (132) and Mikel Gregory (152), as does Ooltewah in Tyler Reid (195) and Victor Bednarski (220). The only other Region 4 wrestler still in the championship round is Rhea County's Jay Graham (152).

FRANKLIN — Karim Shereef of Alcoa High School and Phillip Nichols of Christian Academy of Knoxville got the matchup they wanted at the individual wrestling state championships.

Each other.

Shereef will go for a second consecutive state championship on Saturday night against Nichols in the 170-pound Class A/AA finals at Williamson County Ag Expo Center.

Both dominated Friday's semifinals with Shereef (40-1) posting a 4-1 decision over David Johnson (31-10) of Red Bank and Nichols (30-2) earning an 11-2 majority decision over Julian Furr (25-4) of Montgomery Central.

"It feels pretty good to be in the finals," said Shereef, who won the 160-pound state title last year. "I'm glad I'm in the finals with Nichols. It's just what I wanted. I'll just do my thing."

Shereef beat Nichols 12-6 in the region finals, but Nichols said that's not a factor with the state title on the line.

"It's great to represent our school, Knoxville and East Tennessee in the finals," Nichols said. "I lost to him then in the regional finals, but this is now."

Another A-AA final made in Knoxville is at 160 pounds between Josh Croley (50-8) of Pigeon Forge and Alcoa's Austyn Renshaw (50-6). Croley won a technical fall 17-1 over Sean Srock (18-4) of Millington while Renshaw won by fall at 1:03 over Daniel Novack (36-5) of Kingston.

"I beat him in the finals of Region 1, so I have that experience against him. I think I can beat him," Croley said.

"It's my senior year, I'm just glad to make it," Renshaw said. "It would be bonus points if I win the title."

A third all-Knoxville-area A-AA final comes at 220, where Nick Foster (32-3) of Greeneville meets Alcoa's Grant Brace (11-3). Brace's nose bled continuously, resulting in numerous stoppages, and he finished out the 8-7 win over Red Bank's Devon Suddeth with a bandage around his head.

Juan Hernandez (53-5) of Heritage said winning the 126-pound title in Class AAA "would mean everything to me. I've worked four years for this chance." He'll face Joshua LaCoe of Bradley Central.

Other Class AAA finalists are 285-pounder Logan Townsend (26-3) of Jefferson County, Michael Diemer (49-6) of Heritage at 145 and Kyle Burns (27-4) of Bearden at 120.

Alcoa junior heavyweight Samson Evans (59-0) seeks his third consecutive state title after a 2:00 fall over Logan Hayes of Sycamore.

"It's pretty cool," he said. "I started thinking about this (in) about the fourth grade, when I started wrestling."

Other A-AA finalists include Josh Vance (36-3) of Greeneville at 152 and the Pigeon Forge trio of Matthew Kieta (51-4) at 138, Jacob Ruiter (41-12) at 120 and Dymond Smith (43-12) at 106.

Alcoa leads in A-AA with 131 points followed by Pigeon Forge (128.5) and Red Bank (126.5).

In Class AAA, Bradley Central is running away with 202.5 points, while Beech is second at 108. Heritage is a distant fifth with 88 points.

No Knoxville area girls made the finals, but could still medal in consolations.

Cailey Griffin of Gibbs lost a 3-2 decision to Lindsey Morrison of Northwest at 148, and the junior called it a learning experience.

Consolation semifinal matches start at 11 a.m. Saturday. The championship finals start at 6 p.m.

FRANKLIN â€” Tyler Barber and Matthew Sells will be rookies Saturday night when they take the mat in their first TSSAA state championship matches.

It will be deja vu for Riverdale junior Nick Boykin.

For the second time in two years, three Rutherford County wrestlers reached the Class AAA state title matches at the Williamson County Ag Expo Center.

The finals start at 5 p.m.

Boykin (44-0) will attempt to win his second consecutive title at 285 pounds while completing his second undefeated season.

Sells, a Blackman junior, is in the 160-pound championship. Barber, a Stewarts Creek senior, is in the 220-pound title match.

Barber, who defeated Ooltewah's Victor Bednarski 6-1 in his semifinal, placed sixth a year ago at 220 pounds. Barber wrestles Science Hill's Hunter Bagley.

He is tryinging to become Stewarts Creek's first TSSAA state champion in any sport in the school's three-year history.

"It's huge," Barber said. "This offseason I worked my butt off to get here.

"It hasn't hit me yet. I'm just so excited."

Sells, who finished fourth at 152 pounds in 2015, defeated Knoxville Halls' Colton Mcmahan 4-3 in the semifinals. Sells was up 4-2 in the final minute when Mcmahan closed to within one after Sells was called for stalling. But Sells was in control of the match.

It marked the second time Sells had defeated Mcmahan this season. He also beat him in the Bradley Central tournament.

"He was a little more aggressive on his feet," Sells said. "Other than that, I think I did a pretty good job against him."

Sells faces Dobyns-Bennett's Alex Jeffers in the championship match.

Boykin needed just 25 seconds to pin Gibbs' Jonathan Davis to clinch a berth in the final. However, his quarterfinal wasn't as easy. He beat Wilson Central's Michael Kramer 14-7 in a match where Boykin was put on his back at one point in the match.

"The last time I was put on my back was my freshman year against Bruno Reagan (in the state tournament)," Boykin said. "I am on my back in practice, but I haven't been there in a match in a while."

Four other Rutherford County wrestlers are guaranteed medals on Saturday. They wrestle at 10 a.m. in consolation matches to determine if they will be in the third-place match or fifth-place match.

Stewarts Creek's John Olivieri faces Beech's Kyle Smith at 170 pounds.

Smyrna's Chester Peden faces Independence's Isaiah Demello at 220 pounds.

Siegel's Landen Patterson faces Davis at 285 pounds.

Siegel's Madeline Davis will become the school's first female medalist. She faces Genesis Tinoco of Northview Academy.

Bradley Locks Up Another State Wrestling Title

Bears Have Six In Finals And Lead By 94.5 Points Over Beech

Bradley Central's Brett Brown (front) won this Class AAA 195-weight class bout with Bearden's Jacob Gerken on Friday at the 2016 TSSAA State Wrestling Championships by a 5-4 decision. FRANKLIN, Tenn. – The fat lady had already warmed up and even sung a few verses, but headed home long before Friday’s action was complete here at the Williamson County Agricultural Exposition Park in the annual TSSAA Class AAA State Wrestling tournament.

That’s about the way things have gone in this division as the Bradley Bears have unofficially clinched another state title with still a day left in the competition.

If the truth were known, coach Ben Smith could have put his Bears on the bus and headed back to Cleveland Friday night and still won as they piled up 202.5 points and advanced six to Saturday’s championship finals.

Nobody else has a chance of catching them as Beech is a distant second with 108 points and three finalists.

Tennessee High is currently third with 103 points and one in the finals while three-time defending champ Cleveland is fourth with 95 points and one finalist.  Heritage is fifth with 88 points.

Soddy Daisy is seventh with 84.5 while Walker Valley is 12thand Ooltewah 20th with 67 and 48 points, respectively.  East Hamilton is 33rd with 31 while Rhea County is 50th with 11 points.

Bradley coach Ben Smith is a superstitious fellow and does his best to not show emotion, no matter what the situation.  But on a weekend when his team has exceeded even his own expectations, the emotional fellow had a tough time containing his joy following Friday night’s championship semifinals.

“We have six in the finals and three others alive in the consolations, but who’s in second place?†he asked following a first-period loss by D.J. Adams at 285 in Bradley’s final match of the day.

“It’s been a positive day for the Bears, but I hurt for my heavyweight.  We had a great day and I think we won 90 percent of our matches.  That’s what we needed to do to get to where we are right now.

“I knew we were capable from the beginning, but you always have to expect a few upsets along the way.  Joshua LaCoe beat a defending state champ at 126, so that was a huge win.  That’s one I wasn’t sure we’d win, but when he opens up, he’s hard to stop.

“It really feels good to be in the position we’re in, but it feels even better because we had some kids who overachieved this weekend and I’m really proud of that,†Smith concluded on a positive note.

Bradley’s six finalists include unbeaten T.J. Hicks at 113, who was the champ at 106 a year ago.  Ryan McElhaney is set at 120, LaCoe at 126, Knox Fuller is looking for this third-straight state title – this year at 138 – while Donnie Beyer is the man at 152 and Brett Brown a favorite at 195.

Colton Landers is Cleveland’s finalist at 132 while Landon Wheaton will be battling at 106 for Soddy Daisy.  Joseph Munoz is Walker Valley’s hope at 132 while Ooltewah’s Tyler Reid is hoping for a title at 195.

While the consolation finals will be held on Saturday morning for third and fifth places, the championship finals are set to begin around 5 p.m. (CST).

The Irish will send James Killian (106), Christian Simpson (113) Trey Chalifoux (120), Raymond Eason (126), Kirby Simpson (132), Eli King (138), George Hooker (182), Ben Stacey (220) and Jeremy Darvin (285) to the finals. Christian Simpson, Chalifoux, Eason, Kirby Simpson, King and Stacey are all returning state champs.

Father Ryan finished the evening ahead of Baylor 196-173 in the team standings.

“We expected a fight like this,†said Kirby Simpson, the coach’s son. “Baylor’s a great team .Everybody here is a great team.â€

The Irish are trying to sweep the Division II championships after winning the duals state title two weeks ago. Although that might have put a target on their back, the Father Ryan wrestlers have put that win behind them, Kirby Simpson said. “We wanted to be the hunter this week, instead of the hunted.â€

“We’ve got to keep wrestling,†he said. “They guys in the consolation rounds have to wrestle well. That’s where we’re going to win this tournament.â€

MBA has four wrestlers in the finals: Joseph Torquine (113), Gabriel Elkins (120), Carter Heckle (170), and D’On Coofer (220), who won a state championship two years ago.

In the finals for Beech will be Brayden Palmer (106) and brothers Trevor Rippy (145) and Kaleb Rippy (182).

“We’re getting better,†Kaleb Rippy said. “Our middle school program is kicking in.â€

Kaleb Rippy, who won his semifinal match over Tennessee High’s Jeremy Spangler on a pin with less than a second left in the first period, is looking forward to his first appearance in the state finals.

“I just want to make it one more match, take one more step,†he said.

Riverdale’s Nick Boykin continued his march through the AAA heavyweight division with a semifinal pin of Jonathan Davis of Gibbs in 25 seconds. Boykin, the defending state champ, has pinned three opponents in 25 seconds or less and won a fourth match in a 14-7 decision over Michael Kramer of Wilson Central.

“I don’t like to play with people, so I like to go out there real quick,†Boykin said.

The key in the title match against Logan Townsend of Jefferson County will be a strong first period, he said.

“Most everybody breaks after the first period,†said Boykin.

Ravenwood senior Chris Rowland remained unbeaten and moved into the Class AAA 152 finals with a 9-3 win over Rhea County’s Jay Graham.

“It was rougher than I wanted,†Rowland said. “Nobody rolls over in the state semifinals. He was going to give me his best and I was going to give him my best. I came out on top, that’s what counts.â€

Rowland, who finished second at 138 pounds last year, will try to claim the championship against Donnie Beyer of Bradley Central.

Blackman junior Matthew Sells earned a trip to the AAA finals in the 160-pound weight class with a 4-3 win over Colton McMahan of Knoxville Halls. Sells scored the winning points with a takedown at the end of the second period.

Sells and McMahan had met in the finals of the Bradley Central Invitational earlier this season with Sells coming out on top 4-2.

“I knew he was really strong,†Sells said. “I had to score first and keep up the pace on him.â€

Sells will face Alex Jeffers of Dobyns Bennett for the state championship.

“I need to keep up my pace, keep up my shots,†Sells said. “I can beat anybody if I do that.â€

Clarksville Northeast will have two wrestlers in the girls finals, Caitlyn Green at 105 and Jadyn Sayer-adona at 155, who is looking to repeat as state champion. Clarksville Northwest will have three in the finals, returning state champion Jessica Elery at 138, Lindsey Morrison at 148 and Deyla Brito-Perez at 155.

Other Midstate wrestlers in the finals include: Forrest’s Dylan Pendley (A-AA 113); Harpeth’s Braxton Harper (A-AA 120); Page’s Andrew Birchett (A-AA 138); Nashville Christian’s Gregory Williams (A-AA 195); Wilson Central’s Zach Linton (AAA 170);Stewart’s Creek’s Tyler Barber (AAA 220); Hendersonville’s Jessica Mumaw (Girls 112); Dickson County’s Halla Woodson (Girls 120); Antioch’s Shantoia Blackburn (Girls 125); Warren County’s Hollie Yokely (Girls 130); Summit’s Jailah Grimes (Girls 148); Montgomery Central’s Keely Sage (Girls 165) and Cumberland County’s Kaleigh Johnson (Girls 185).

D-II State Wrestling: McCallie's Judah Duhm - The Overcomer

D-II Wrestling Starts Today at 11 a.m. EST

Friday, February 19, 2016 - by B.B Branton

Life has reached up and hit McCallie wrestler Judah Duhm in the face not once, but three times yet the soft-spoken junior stands at the door this weekend of a possible undefeated state championship season.

In wrestling terms, he was on his back and fighting to get up.

From a distance, life seems good for the 16-year-old Lookout Mountain Ga. resident with a 3.5 grade point average, who has the aforementioned undefeated season (36-0) and is three wins from a state championship which could come Saturday night in Franklin at the Williamson County Ag Expo Center.

State Tourney Info: (all times EST)  Friday

11 a.m. -D-II quarterfinals … 7 p.m.  -  championship semis and consolations

Saturday – Noon - finals in all divisions for third and fifth places … 6 p.m.   championship finals for all divisions

A closer look shows thanks to suffering a torn meniscus in his left knee in the summer after his eighth grade year and a bad back keeping him sidelined the next two years his prep career could have been over and with it the dream of a state title.

Plus, the family home burned to the ground when he was 10-years-old.

“We lost everything in the fire and it took two years to re-build our home,†said Duhm (pronounced Doom) who is the top seed at 160 pounds this weekend in the D-II (private school) tournament and one of the best wrestlers at that weight in any division (A-AA and AAA being the other two)in the state.

“But thanks to great friends in the neighborhood and in our church (Lookout Mountain Presbyterian), and lots of prayer and encouragement we were able to find a home nearby to live in while my dad led the way to re-build our new home.â€

Home schooled until his eighth grade year when he entered McCallie, Duhm is thankful for where he is today.

“I was hoping to apply for McCallie six years ago, but when the fire destroyed our home that option was put on hold for three years.

“I never thought I would be able to attend McCallie (after the fire) and even through injuries I am thankful for this opportunity of earning a great education.â€

Academic Adjustment: He admits that it was a huge adjustment going from the world of home schooling to the academic rigors of a top prep school.

“I didn’t do so well my eighth grade year, yet I knew this (being at McCallie) was such an incredible opportunity for me and being sidelined from wrestling for two years helped me focus on my studies,†stated  Duhm who says Chemistry is his most enjoyable subject this year and AP U.S. History is the most difficult.

He also enjoys wrestling and likes the one-on-one, man-to-man combat part of the sport.

“My dad wrestled in high school in California and had me in a singlet by the age of five,†Duhm stated.

“I didn’t do too well early on and my current teammate Trent Walliser and others whipped me pretty bad in practice when we were kids.

â€œBut today thanks to coaches David Levitt and Gordon Connell I have a clear idea of who I am  -  one who is extremely aggressive and ready to do battle with my opponent.â€

Coach Connell said,†Judah doesn’t give in and is so persistent when he out there on the mat which a great trait to have to be successful.â€

“This “incredible opportunity†and a second and third chance to wear the McCallie singlet continues starting today in the morning quarterfinals. A win moves him to this evening’s semifinals and then possibly knocking on the championship door come Saturday night.

Father Ryan, sitting in second place in the team standings of the Division II State Wrestling Championships after the first round, stormed back into the lead in the semifinal round Friday evening by sending nine wrestlers into the finals.

In the Division I-AAA tournament, Beech moved into second place in the team standings after sending three wrestlers to the finals, the most in school history.

“We were disappointed in a couple of the matches, but not the score,†Father Ryan coach Pat Simpson said of the quarterfinals. “We knew we had a chance to make it up in this round.â€

Kaleb Rippy, who won his semifinal match over Tennessee High's Jeremy Spangler on a pin with less than a second left in the first period, is looking forward to his first appearance in the state finals.

“I just want to make it one more match, take one more step," he said.

Ravenwood senior Chris Rowland remained unbeaten and moved into the Class AAA 152 finals with a 9-3 win over Rhea County's Jay Graham.

Other Midstate wrestlers in the finals include: Forrest's Dylan Pendley (A-AA 113); Harpeth's Braxton Harper (A-AA 120); Page's Andrew Birchett (A-AA 138); Nashville Christian's Gregory Williams (A-AA 195); Wilson Central's Zach Linton (AAA 170);Stewart's Creek's Tyler Barber (AAA 220); Hendersonville's Jessica Mumaw (Girls 112); Dickson County's Halla Woodson (Girls 120); Antioch's Shantoia Blackburn (Girls 125); Warren County's Hollie Yokely (Girls 130); Summit's Jailah Grimes (Girls 148); Montgomery Central's Keely Sage (Girls 165) and Cumberland County's Kaleigh Johnson (Girls 185).

FRANKLIN, Tenn. — While Bradley Central and Father Ryan completed state wrestling domination in their respective divisions by capturing traditional championships Saturday night, Pigeon Forge blocked Red Bank's drive for the same type of credentials.

Bradley locked up its championship four matches into Friday's semifinals. Father Ryan wasn't so fortunate and actually entered the championship finals down by a point to Baylor, whom it embarrassed in the Division II duals championship two weeks earlier. The Purple Irish, though, secured a tie with the 220-pound victory and won the title outright on an ultimate tiebreaker decision from heavyweight Jeremy Darvin.

"It was fun — wasn't as much fun as it could've been," Baylor coach Ben Nelson said. "But this is the most gratifying state tournament I've ever coached. The heart and effort was incredible. We couldn't have asked for any more. The kids gave us all they had."

Red Bank had a fabulous run from what coach Shane Turner termed "a bunch of overachievers." The Lions were very much in the title hunt until Saturday morning's consolation semifinals, when they managed just one win in five tries.

Bradley Central finished the Class AAA event with 244.5 points, Father Ryan had 247 to 238 for Baylor in Division II and Pigeon Forge had 177.5 in Class A/AA.

Meanwhile, Baylor wrestlers Michael Murphy and Ryan Parker sewed up their fourth state championships. The soft-spoken and reserved Murphy, who wanted no publicity when he committed to and then signed with Virginia, beat McCallie's Ethan Dendy for the third time in the last three weeks.

Winning their third state titles were Bradley's Knox Fuller and Notre Dame's Luke Mullin.

It was very much a special night, too, for Hixson coach Garrick Hall.

When Landon Goforth pinned rival Gabe McDuffie of Red Bank for the second straight week, Hall's fists pumped into the air.

Although Hall-coached teams have won their share of state championships, he never had an individual state champion until that moment. He was delighted for Goforth — and then started bragging about Goforth's tennis skills — but he was able to finally shoo away an albatross that has weighed heavily on his shoulders and shadowed Hixson's program.

"I'll probably cry a little later," he said, admitting he hadn't been to the stands to get hugs from his wife and his father.

It had been an up-and-down year for the Wildcats from Hall's own medical issues through team dismissals to some wrestlers abandoning the sport.

Hall's teams have won three state wrestling titles — a pair of dual tournaments and the first A/AA tournament in 2014 — but Goforth's championship was the first for Hixson since Todd Wheeler in 1990 when Hall was wrestling for the Wildcats.

Walker Valley, which finished a respectable 10th in Class AAA, got its first state champion since 2013 (Caleb Langford) when 132-pound Joe Munoz topped Cleveland's Colton Landers. Munoz was named the Class AAA outstanding wrestler.

Division II outstanding wrestler was Trey Chalifoux of Father Ryan, and for A/AA it was Pigeon Forge's Matthew Kieta.

In the girls' competition, Sequatchie County's Katie Brock won her second state title, finished the year 31-0 and was named outstanding wrestler.

Best matches went to Baylor's Mason Reiniche and Christian Brothers' Drew Nicholson at 152 pounds, Alcoa's Kareem Shereef and CAK's Phillip Nichols in A/AA and Bradley's Donnie Beyer and Ravenwood's Chris Rowland in AAA.

Weight-class changes in prep wrestling's future?

On a personal note: There was a little bit of buzz about involving changes in rules that would minimize the temptation for coaches to default easily and also those unfortunate mass forfeits in the duals.

Possibly 8 points rather than 6 for example.

Bradley wrestlers sustain breakdown after winning state title

The Bradley Central High School wrestling team's bus broke down.

Fortunately for the Bears, it was on the way home with Tennessee's Class AAA state championship safely tucked away.

"We had a fuel filter bust, and it was spraying fuel," Bears coach Ben Smith said.

It was the closest Smith's team came to a breakdown all weekend.

On the return trip Saturday night from Franklin — where the Bears completed a two-title season after winning the AAA state duals championship there two weeks earlier — parents following the bus noticed something streaming from underneath. So the Bears made an unscheduled overnight stop in Murfreesboro.

"There was no place to get it fixed or get a part, and we felt it was unsafe to continue until we could get it repaired," Smith said.

Parents helped transport the coaches and 12 wrestlers on the bus to Buffalo Wild Wings and then a hotel. The incident was just another chapter in the storied book that is Bradley Central wrestling.

"We left (Cleveland) politely and returned the same way," Smith said Sunday afternoon as he and the team finally pulled into the high school parking lot.

When the Bears left last Wednesday they did so with little fanfare. They returned the same way. There was no parade or police escort through town as there had been after the duals championship.

Yet it was just as well for the Bears. Smith would love to stay under the radar, which is likely to be impossible after his program returned to state prominence in grand fashion.

"We'll be defending champs and underdogs next year," he said. "Cleveland will be a year older, and Soddy-Daisy will be a year older and a year wiser."

Based on a scale of six points for a first-place finisher who will return to the lineup to one point for a returning sixth-place finisher, Bradley appears to be the team to beat in AAA, followed by Cleveland, Tennessee High, Beech and Soddy-Daisy.

Bradley should have three returning champions, while Soddy-Daisy, Blackman and Riverdale should have one apiece.

Although Division II champion Father Ryan returns a pretty good team, there could be a shift in the location of next year's division favorite from middle Tennessee to west. Christian Brothers has 11 returning medalists. Father Ryan has six (including three champions), Baylor has seven (with two champions) and McCallie and MBA each boast six returning medalists.

There appears to be more balance in Class A/AA. Greeneville has the most returning points with one champion, a runner-up, a third-place finisher and a fourth-place finisher.

Alcoa should be strong again, along with state traditional champion Pigeon Forge and possibly state duals winner Red Bank. Each should have a state champion from this season returning to the lineup.

Bonus points

- Bradley Central and Baylor were the most effective pinning teams for the state traditional tournaments, Bradley with 24 and Baylor with 22. Soddy-Daisy was No. 3 on that list with 15. McCallie had 12, and Walker Valley had 11.

- There were a total of 626 pins spread across AAA, A/AA, Division II and the girls division, with 353 coming in the 448-wrestler AAA event.

- Seven wrestlers tied for the pin lead with four apiece. They were led by Riverdale junior heavyweight Nick Boykin, who took 1 minute, 36 seconds total to record his four, and Soddy-Daisy senior 160-pounder Tucker Russo, who took 5:26. Boykin is the brother of University of Tennessee at Chattanooga junior 197-pounder Scottie Boykin

- The fastest pin was in nine seconds, a mark set by four wrestlers: Riverdale's Boykin, Bradley Central heavyweight D.J. Adams, Jefferson County 160-pounder Aaron Lawson and Hume-Fogg girls' 130-pounder Isabel Brannon.

- Of the championship teams, Bradley Central earned the most points on average for each of its wrestlers at 18.8. Baylor was at 18.3 points and Father Ryan at 17.6.

- Of the unbeaten wrestlers who entered the tournament with at least 25 wins, nine finished the season with a perfect record: Alcoa heavyweight Sammy Evans (62-0), Baylor 195-pounder Ryan Parker (51-0), Bradley Central 113-pounder T.J. Hicks (44-0), Riverdale's Boykin (41-0), McCallie 160-pounder Judah Duhm (42-0), Father Ryan 120-pounder Trey Chalifoux (36-0) and 132-pounder Kirby Simpson (36-0), Sequatchie County girls' 105-pounder Katie Brock (31-0) and Hixson 145-pounder Landon Goforth (30-0).

Rippy brothers give Beech first state wrestling titles...

FRANKLIN — The Beech High School wrestling program has been steadily building for years.

On Saturday, brothers Trevor and Kaleb Rippy helped the Buccaneers finally break through, capturing the program’s first two state wrestling titles at the Williamson County Ag Expo Center.

Riverdale coaches including Shawn Jones, right, celebrate before the pin is more

“We just went out there and took it,†said 182-pound champion Kaleb Rippy. “I’d been waiting so long just for this moment to come.â€

Trevor Rippy, who finished third in 132 a season ago, captured the 145-pound Class AAA individual title with Saturday’s 3-0 win over Heritage’s Michael Diemer, polishing off a perfect 53-0 season in the process.

“We knew what was ahead of us and how big it was,†said Trevor Rippy, a sophomore. “It’s amazing; a one-of-a-kind feeling. This was our last year to do it. (Kaleb is) a senior, and I really wanted us to be able to do this.â€

Trevor’s older brother, Kaleb, captured his championship hardware about an hour later, pinning Jefferson County’s Josh Booker 3:37 into the 182-pound title match.

“I was super anxious just to get out there and get it over with,†Trevor Rippy said. “I worked for four years to become a state champion, and (Trevor) won, so I knew that I couldn’t get outdone.â€

In addition to the Trevor and Kaleb Rippy, Blackman’s Matthew Sells (160), Wilson Central’s Zach Linton (170) and Riverdale’s Nick Boykin (285) also secured Class AAA titles on Saturday.

Boykin, who took down three of his state tournament opponents in 25 seconds or less, needed just 41 seconds to pin Jefferson County’s Logan Townsend on Saturday, securing his second straight title as well as a second consecutive undefeated season (45-0).

“I felt good out there,†Boykin said. “I didn’t know it was going to be that quick. But, he stepped right into it.â€

Beech finished tied for third in the Class AAA team standings with 117 points — 127.5 behind first-place Bradley Central. Tennessee High finished third with 121, while Cleveland (117) and Soddy-Daisy (98.5) rounded out the top five.

Father Ryan finished with seven Division II champions for the second season in a row, edging second-place Baylor 247-238 thanks to senior Jeremy Darvin’s 5-2 win over Baylor’s Cooper Reiniche in the 285-pound title match.

“That’s two years in a row where if we don’t have seven champions we don’t win the tournament,†Father Ryan coach Pat Simpson said. “You feel good if you get five champions, but to get seven two years in a row, it’s unheard of.â€

In addition to Darvin, Christian Simpson (113), Trey Chalifoux (120), Raymond Eason (126), Kirby Simpson (132), Eli King (138) and Ben Stacey (220) also won titles on Saturday.

Christian Brothers (170) finished third in the Division II team standings, while McCallie (167.5) and MBA (140) rounded out the top five.

In girls action, reigning Tennessean Midstate Girls Wrestler of the Year Jessica Elery of Clarksville Northwest captured her second straight 138-pound title, while Summit’s Jailah Grimes (148), Clarksville Northeast’s Jaydn Sayer-adona (155) and St. Andrews-Sewanee’s Zaferiah (185) also claimed championships on Saturday.

Northeast finished atop the girls team standings with 62 points, while Montgomery Central (58), St. Andrews-Sewanee (40) and Sycamore (36) also finished in the top five.

Another side note: Boykin's toughest match came Thursday vs Frosh Michael Kremer, who ended up 4th... Makes you wonder if we may have someone coming up in a couple of years that would make Bruno, Sammy Evans and even Boykin admire??

You must wonder how exciting it would be to change from our traditional tournament with several divisions...

Imagine, only TWO. One boys and Two Girls.

Grand Championship: All divisions with 8 places!! Team points separated by division, but what an opportunity for the young men to compete!?!?

Imagine would Hicks be #1, Murph? Duhm/Sells/Russo pehaps with right rules in place? Linton? Bagley? Again, Evans or Boykin??

No storybook finish, but state runner-up is still a strong way to close a chapter.

Jefferson County High School seniors Logan Townsend (285 pounds) and Josh Booker (182) lost in the Class AAA finals in Saturday night's individual wrestling state championships in Franklin.

"Of course they wanted to win their last match, but the goal was to be in the state finals and they accomplished that," Patriots coach Logan Hollingshead said Sunday. "They both had an unbelievable senior season."

Townsend (26-4) was pinned in 39 seconds by undefeated two-time champ Nick Boykin (41-0) of Riverdale while Booker (28-3) fell at 3:37 to Kaleb Rippy (8-0) of Beech.

Bradley Central won the AAA team title with 244.5 points. Gibbs (92.5) finished seventh, followed by Heritage (92.0). Halls (77.0) was 11th, followed by William Blount (74.0). Jefferson County (59.0) was 18th.

A-AA: Consistency wins championships, an adage proven by Pigeon Forge. Led by Outstanding Wrestler Matthew Kieta at 138 pounds, the Tigers won the team championship with 177.5 points by medaling in nine of 14 weight classes. The senior Kieta (53-4), now a two-time champion, pinned Page's Andrew Birchett (53-6) in 1:04.

Pigeon Forge's Dymond Smith (106) and Jacob Ruiter (120) won titles and Josh Croley (160) was second. Third-place finishers included Caleb York (113), Elias Bond (126), Gary Reagan (152) and Anthony Baiamonte (195). Ethan Olinger (182) won sixth.

Alcoa (159.0) crowned four state champions to finish second, followed by Red Bank (152.5) and Greeneville (108.0). Christian Academy of Knoxville (26.0) was 17th, followed by Grace Christian Academy (23.0).

Best match went to Alcoa's Karim Shereef (41-1) for his 8-5 decision over CAK's Phillip Nichols (30-3) at 170 to win his third straight state title. Alcoa junior heavyweight Samson Evans (60-0) hopes to become a four-time champion next season. Other Alcoa winners were Austyn Renshaw (160) and Ryan Verhulst (132).

Boykin, Wells win TSSAA state wrestling titles

Maurice Patton, Murfreesboro Post

Published: February 21, 2016

FRANKLIN - Rutherford County claimed a pair of titles at the TSSAA Class AAA state wrestling tournament last weekend - one of which may have been more surprising to some than the other.

Riverdale junior Nick Boykin, who won the 285-pound title as a sophomore, closed out an undefeated season with his 39-second pin of Jefferson County's Logan Townsend in Saturday night's championship finals at the Williamson County Ag Expo, while Blackman junior Matthew Sells won the 160-pound crown with a 9-3 decision over Alex Jeffers of Kingsport Dobyns-Bennett.

In five state tournament matches, Boykin - a two-time all-American over the past summer at the Junior and Cadet Nationals in Fargo, N.D. - recorded four pins, all in less than a minute. His only match to go six minutes was a 14-7 decision against Wilson Central freshman Michael Kramer in Friday's quarterfinal round.

"My headthrow is my favorite move, and people keep walking into it," Boykin said regarding Saturday's quick win for his third medal. He finished third as a freshman. "I would have let a lot of people down if I didn't get (the win). I was hoping to pull out a pin like last year."

Sells controlled his championship match from beginning to end.

"I felt pretty good on my feet," he said. "He didn't get many shots in on me. And I held him down pretty well."

After, he discussed the absence of Soddy Daisy's Tucker Russo from the finals. Russo was disqualified in his Round-of-16 match Thursday for an illegal slam of Smyrna's Tyrone Johnson. The two-time champion, who was favored by many to win again this year, came back through the consolation bracket to finish third.

"I would rather have beaten (Russo) in the finals," said Sells, who placed fourth at 152 a year ago. "He only beat me in overtime at the G.P. West tournament (last month in Brentwood). That would have been a lot more satisfying."

After an opening-round pin Thursday, Sells advanced through the bracket with a second-round decision, a 13-3 major decision in the quarterfinals over Cedric Lynn of Memphis East and a 4-3 decision over Colton McMahan of Knoxville Halls.

A third local competitor came up just short of a title, as Stewarts Creek senior Tyler Barber lost a 2-1 double-overtime decision to Science Hill's Hunter Bagley in the 220 finals. Barber placed sixth at 220 last year.

Smyrna's Chester Peden and Siegel's Landen Patterson received sixth-place medals at 220 and 285, respectively.

In Class A/AA, Eagleville's Drew Gill finished third at 160, with a 3-2 decision over Daniel Novack of Kingston. In girls competition, Siegel's Madeline Davis placed fourth at 112, losing by pin to Sycamore's Nena Chrestman.

Summit's Grimes takes home wrestling title; Ravenwood's Rowland and Page's Birchett runners-up

By JOSH VARDAMAN

Published: February 20, 2016

Williamson County was represented by three athletes Saturday at the Tennessee state wrestling tournament held at the Williamson County Ag Expo Center.

Seniors Jailah Grimes of Summit, Chris Rowland of Ravenwood and Andrew Birchett of Page each competed, with Grimes bringing home the only championship medal.

Jailah Grimes, Summit girls

Grimes was competing in her second state tournament, her first in the 148-pound weight class.

She placed third last season in the 138-pound class, but moved up to the 148 this season.

Grimes was faced up against Lindsey Morrison of Northwest in the finals. The two had wrestled before, and Grimes knew the match would be close.

"I honestly expected her to win," she said. "We've wrestled before and we've already went into overtime. This time I just happened to win."

Both came out looking to lock each other up, and Grimes got out to a 3-0 lead before Morrison used two escapes to close the score to 3-2 late in the match.

Grimes was able to grab another point to give herself a little cushion, though, and took the decision 4-2.

Now that her high school wrestling career is finished, Grimes is looking forward to attending UNC-Asheville on a track and field scholarship.

Though she is through with her wrestling career, she said the program at Summit has helped her grow and she will never forget the people who helped her become a state champion. She also has ambitions of helping with future Summit girls who want to give wrestling a shot.

"It means a lot, especially from my first coach, who passed away," Grimes said. "Our coach has always taught us you go out to wrestle hard, not to win, and if you wrestle hard you will eventually win. It means a lot to me."

Chris Rowland, Ravenwood

Rowland (19-0) was looking to add his second state title of the school year after the Raptors' state football championship from the fall.

He was matched up against Bradley Central senior Donnie Beyer, who took home a championship with the Bears in the state duals.

The two had never wrestled before, and Rowland said he didn't really know what to expect going into it.

"I've seen him wrestle before and most of his matches ended pretty quickly, so I couldn't really see what he was about," he said. "He's a very good wrestler and very strong."

The match was slow off the start, and the two were tied at 1 late in the third period. With 40 seconds remaining, Beyer scored a takedown to go up two points, and Rowland could only manage an escape before the final bell sounded, ending the match in a 3-2 decision in favor of Beyer.

"I didn't set the tone of the match early like I did in all of my other matches," Rowland said. "I came out a little too passive, and I let all of the hype around the finals get to me. I didn't do my thing."

As his high school wrestling career comes to an end, Rowland is looking forward to playing football at Tennessee State University starting in the fall.

He competed in the wrestling state tournament all four years at four different weight classes. As a freshman he advanced to the quarterfinals in the 113-pound weight class before jumping up to 132 as a sophomore, where he finished third. Last season, he finished runner-up at 138 pounds after a 4-3 decision.

Though he couldn't bring home a championship medal, he said he won't let the loss haunt him.

"I'm not going to let it define me. Everyone loses, and I'm pretty happy with the way it went. It just wasn't in God's plan for me to win."

Andrew Birchett, Page

In the boys' Division I A-AA 138-pound finals, Page senior Andrew Birchett (53-5) matched up with fellow senior Matthew Keita of Pigeon Forge (52-4).

Birchett seemed to have trouble with Keita from the opening whistle.

The Page senior fell down 2-0 after a quick takedown, and Keita finished off the match right after with a pin at the 1:04 mark.

Birchett's high school wrestling career comes to an end with three trips to the state tournament. He finished sixth as a sophomore in the 145-pound weight class before moving to the 138-pound class last season, when he finished third before being the runner-up this year.

CBHS freshman Robbie Griggs brings home state wrestling title

Four Christian Brothers High School wrestlers stepped on the mat Saturday in Nashville with a chance to bring home a state championship. But only one came back with a championship, the smallest guy on the roster.

Robbie Griggs completed an impressive run through the Division 2 106-pound bracket with a 6-2 victory over James Killian of Nashville Father Ryan. The freshman, who ends the year with a 42-12 record, won his previous two tournament matches by pinfall, needing a combined total of 2 minutes and 41 seconds.

"Robbie wrestled great like he has all year," said CBHS coach Chris Lewis. "He controlled the match. He was aggressive when he needed to be and strong on defense when he needed to be. I couldn't be prouder."

Griggs will be the only Shelby County state champion in 2016 after his three teammates lost their title matches.

Trevor Brown suffered an injury late in the first period of the 138-pound match and defaulted to Father Ryan's Eli King. Drew Nicholson dropped a narrow 6-5 decision to Mason Reiniche of Chattanooga Baylor in the 152-pound final. And Tommy Brackett dropped a 9-2 decision to Judah Duhm of Chattanooga McCallie in the 160-pound championship match.

"Trevor and Eli King hit heads pretty hard," said Lewis. "And Drew lost in the final second so that was a heart-breaker, too. We thought we had that one. Tommy just ran into a buzzsaw."

All 13 CBHS wrestlers who qualified for state earned medals Saturday. Tanner Tidswell took third at 132 and Andrew Sweatt placed third at 195. Fourth-place finishes came from Connor Rasberry (120), Bryce Wittman (145) and Grayson Walthall (220).

CBHS also earned fifth-place results from Tyler Lubin (113), Joshua Adams (126) and Keegan Jones (182) while Patrick Healy took sixth at 285.

In addition to the Brothers' contingent, several other local wrestlers earned their place on the medal stand Saturday.

St. Benedict got a pair of third-place finishes from Kevin Pease (170) and Noah Kurtz (182). Joe Walsh took fourth for the Eagles at 106 and Dalton Kilpatrick also grabbed fourth at 113.

St. George's had a fourth-place finish from Jake Lindow at 182, a fifth from Chris Hollis at 195 and a sixth from David Fisk at 120 while MUS ended the day with a trio of sixth-places finishes, from Ramiz Somjee (106), Thomas Wells (145) and Jake Knaff (152).

In AAA, Shelby County took home three sixth-place finishes: Arlington's Reed Cannon at 106, Travis Arthur of Houston at 126 and Jaterius Graham of Bolton at 182.

FRANKLIN — After Thursday's Day 1 of the Tennessee State Wrestling Championships Bradley Central head coach Ben Smith was concerned about his team falling victim to the Day 2 curse the Bears have suffered in past championships.

He needn't have been.

In reality, the Tennessee Secondary Schools Athletics Association could have handed Bears coach Ben Smith the Bears' 24th championship trophy at the end of Friday's semifinals competition.

The Bears walked off the mat with 135.5 points, 58.5 points better then their nearest competitor after quarterfinals and put the championship completely in the bag with 202.5 points after the semifinal rounds. Beech High School, the nearest competitor, was second with 108. Defending champion Cleveland battled back to fourth place with 95 points and Walker Valley was 12th with 67.

Tennessee High (103) and Heritage (88) rounded out the top five.

Bradley picked up 42 more points in Saturday morning's consolation rounds and ended the three-day tournament with a total of 244.5 points after winning five of six championship matches Saturday night. Tennessee High School wound up in second place. Beech and Cleveland ended tied for third place with 117 points and Soddy-Daisy took fourth with 98.5 points. Walker Valley took a step up with a 10th-place finish scoring 80 points.

Smith, who generally tried to remain stoic during the tournament to keep his team grounded found it tough to keep a smile off his face as the night wound down on the second day of the championships as the points piled up for the Bears.

“Five out of six is nice. That's been done a couple of times in Bradley wrestling history. It was nice to do. That will add to the legacy of this team. I am really proud of that,†said Smith who finally allowed himself to relax a bit. “I really hate it for Joshua LaCoe, but he had a great tournament. He beat a defending state champion and just wrestled over his head all tournament. I'm super proud of the five who won capping off a great season and great careers. Five for six is a pretty good showing.â€

Lacoe took second place for the Bears at 126 pounds.

Cleveland's Logan Whiteside took third at 120 and the Blue Raiders' Triston Blansit finished in third at 126. Bradley's Austin Mathews took third place at 145 and Walker Valley's Mikel Gregory ended his tournament with a third-place medal at 152.

The Blue Raiders' Bryce Pond took home fourth-place honors at 106 pounds while Bradley Central's Hunter Parker (132) and Austin Mathews (145) also earned fourth-place finishes.

Jack Hicks, of Cleveland, ended with a fifth-place finish at 170 and Bradley Central's D.J. Adams earned the fourth-place medal at 285.

Smith sent nine wrestlers to Friday's round of quarterfinals with eight reaching the semis. Six Bears went on the battle for state titles.

T.J. Hicks, 2015 state champion at 106 pounds, reached the title round at 113, Ryan McElhaney (120) and Joshua LaCoe — who defeated a defending state champion (126) all moved ahead.

Knox Fuller went hunting for this third-straight state title – this year at 138 after winning at 126 in 2015. Donnie Beyer (152) and Brett Brown (195) rounded out the championship wrestlers for the Bears.

The Bears picked up their first state championship medal courtesy of Hicks with a victory at 113 pounds. McEhaney followed with a championship win at 120 pounds.

Cleveland High School, winners of the last three state champions, had only two Blue Raiders reach the quarterfinals this time. Colton Landers (132) and Hicks (170) both advanced to the semifinals with Landers making it through to the championship round.

Landers faced Walker Valley's Joseph Munoz, the only Mustangs to reach the championships, in the title bout in the lone head-to-head matchup of the night.

Munoz, who pinned his way to the bracket to the championship match fought to a 9-5 decision over Landers who earned the second-place medal.

Landers, Munoz and Bradley's Hunter Parker all cleared the quarterfinals round at 132, the only local trio to make it all the way to the semifinals. Landers came out as the winner over Parker in their semifinals head-to-head matchup.

“I am so proud of Jo Munoz,†said Mustangs coach Al Morris. “If anybody every doubted that hard work pays off, there's that kid. He's the hardest working kid I've ever been around. Both of those guys (Munoz and Landers) are great wrestlers and great competitors. Joe stepped it up big time and I couldn't be happier or more proud of him.

“I'm also proud and happy for Mikel Gregory who finished third. He lost to the No. 1 seed at 152 and came back and gutted it out for third. That was great for him,†Morris continued. “We came here with seven wrestlers and it looks like we will finish in the top 10 which is a milestone for our program. This was a fairly young team and they performed well.â€

Cleveland coach Jake Yost and the Raiders also came to Franklin with a young team and headed home with a third-place finish after coming back from deep in the points standings.

“We got five on the podium and those guys did a really good job. They put us in a situation to take home some hardware. We fell a little short of that but we have four of those five guys coming back next year. All eight guys that came over scored team points for us. For a young group they did a really good job and I am very proud of them,†said Yost. For a young group like that they did a good job and I am proud of them.

Fuller earned his third straight first-place medal and the third state championship for the Bears with a narrow 2-1 win at 138 pounds and Beyer wrestled to a 3-2 victory at 152 to earn a fourth state championship for the Bradley wrestling team. Brown put a cap on the grueling three-day ordeal with a final Bradley Central championship at 195, the fifth of the night for the Bears.

“We had very few moments in this tournament where I thought we got out-fought. That feels really good. We found a lot of bonus points and found a lot of people's backs. We got a lot of wins at the end. The overall effort and fight from the team was fantastic. And I think the score reflects that a little bit. There were very few spots where anything out of character happened. Very few things happened that would make me say this was not a highly successful tournament,†said a pleased Smith.â€

“We want to keep getting better and better from here. We've some work to do. We've got a lot of depth. We've got a good group coming up but we graduate a lot of hardware. But we return a lot of hardware. It will be interesting. The whole state is getting better, everybody around us is getting better. We're not going to stop doing what we're doing and that is work hard. We'll see what happens, but right now we're going to enjoy this one.â€

Outstanding wrestler went to Joseph Munoz from Walker Valley.

Best Match went to the 152-pound final between Donnie Beyer and Chris Rowland.

    • Well nothing new, the Mustangs are really talented again this coming season!  They very well could go undefeated in regular season.  We shall see what happens in postseason.  I think the path to state title game is a little clearer than years past.  I think the Stangs are going to be really good and I think the traditional teams around in 2A are not going to be as strong.  It should be a fun season!
    • I would not put too much stock into the UH over Eagleville. From what I understand they were pretty banged up in that tourney. Catcher was out, they were throwing pretty deep in their bullpen and a few key players were beat up in their infield. Sounds like they are pretty healthy heading into the district tournament. Look at their schedule, they played some really good teams.
