Hill Toppers Tradition Continues to reemerge under Miller (and developing feeder)... /

Young Hilltoppers haven't lowered their expectations

Science Hill wrestling coach Jimmy Miller hopes youthful exuberance can make up for his team’s lack of experience this season.

The Hilltoppers have started the season with a varsity lineup consisting of three seniors, two juniors, eight sophomores and a freshman. Miller is realistic there will be a learning curve, but the ultimate goal remains to be among the top teams in the state.

“We’re still going to make young mistakes, but our kids are good hard workers and they’re good kids,†said Miller, who started his coaching career over two decades ago at Maryville. “They’re a good group of kids with a lot of character. But our expectation is no lower than it’s ever been. When we lower expectations, you lower results and we will never do that here.â€

The expectations were high a season ago with an experienced group which had plenty of early success. However, things went south at the end of the season and the ’Toppers failed to qualify for the state duals meet, and then saw Tennessee High take the Region 1-AAA championship.

“It was a tough season for us and a tough season for me personally,†he said. “We had a bunch of good seniors, a lot of great kids and we really underachieved at the end. We fell short of our goals, not the fault of any one person, but as a team, we didn’t perform as well as we could have. We did not qualify for the state duals for the first time in about 13-14 years. That’s a big sticking point with these kids.â€

There are eight kids back from that varsity squad.

The group is led by two-time region champion Hunter Bagley in the 220-pound weight class. Bagley, a senior, was a state medalist as a sophomore and he already has a big win this season.

He won a tie breaker over No. 2-ranked Victor Bednarski of Ooltewah in the finals of the Owls’ own invitational meet last Saturday.

The other seniors on the team are Austin Taylor, a heavyweight who finished fourth in the Ooltewah Invitational, and Alden Bailey, who missed last season.

Besides Bagley, there were two other Science Hill grapplers to reach the finals in Ooltewah.

They were two-time region finalist Cooper Williams, who lost a major decision to Tristan Roa of Brentwood at 126, and sophomore Luke Story, who reached the 132 final.

Miller said that Story has done more work than anyone during the offseason to improve and it’s shown.

Arthur James, another sophomore, is expected to be a big contributor in the 152 weight class. He pinned Justin Wheeler of Chattanooga Christian in just 1:31 to win the consolation final at Saturday’s meet.

Grayson Pridemore, a junior in the 138 class, is another one whom big things are expected of this season.

As for the other weight classes, they are still being determined as to where guys fit the best and which lineup works best for the team. Miller is trying to emphasize both the individual and team aspects of the sport.

“We’re trying to preach accountability, not only to yourself, but to your teammates,†Miller said. “That means working harder in practice and doing the things outside the room you need to. Right now we’re in a good place and we’re really happy with the kids we’re putting on the mat every day and the kids we’re looking at in the practice room. If we keep doing what we’re doing and we stay healthy, good things are going to happen for us.â€

12/9 D1 Dual Rankings Released!

Christian Pyles on Dec 08, 2015 | More Posts

Email

Penn State coaches Cael Sanderson and Casey CunninghamSo here they are, FloWrestling’s first installment of dual rankings. Our tournament rankings served as a pretty useful framework for these. They’re a rough guage of team strength. With that framework in place we then looked at all the dual results from the year and this is what we came up with and below you'll find detailed explanations for the rankings below.

The ranking in parenthesis represents the teams current ASICS tournament team ranking.

1 - Penn State (1)

2 - Iowa (3)

3 - NC State (7)

4 - OK State (2)

5 - Ohio State (4)

6 - Virginia Tech (5)

7 - Nebraska (9)

8 - Oklahoma (17)

9 - Rutgers (22)

10 - Cornell (6)

11 - Missouri (8)

12 - Illinois (10)

13 - Michigan (11)

14 - Lehigh (18)

15 - North Carolina (14)

16 - Virginia (28)

17 - Old Dominion (12)

18 - Minnesota (13)

19 - Stanford (16)

20 - Central Michigan (25)

The beauty and simplicity of dual rankings is that each result stands on its own. There’s no “this guy was out†type of scenario that factors in. Having quality depth when the inevitable injury occurs is part of being a great dual team. Honestly, dual rankings are tough to do this early in the season and should be taken with a grain of salt. So many of the big dogs haven’t hit (though we’re fortunate that quite a few have already, that's not always the case) that you have to lean more on tournament rankings than you’d like.

Penn State is the tournament #1 and has been for most of this year, they haven’t beaten the elite yet apart from VT, but it being so early, their the #1 til someone proves otherwise. Iowa gets the 2 spot with a very high tournament ranking and the big win over Oklahoma State at Kinnick. Coming in at 3 is NC State who beat Oklahoma State as well as Minnesota.

OSU, Ohio State and VT have all held their own with losses only to teams ranked ahead of them. Ohio State is still undefeated at this point. Nebraska gets a bump with their win over Cornell. They’ve also knocked off Lehigh and Princeton this season.

Oklahoma has proven to be a phenomenal dual team with wins over both Michigan and Rutgers. Rutgers is another major performer in the dual realm. Their wins over Cornell, UNC, UNI and Oregon State earn them a top 10 ranking.

Missouri and Illinois fall in line as undefeated dual teams without the wins to jump a Cornell or Rutgers. Michigan dips some with their loss to Oklahoma. Lehigh is a potential dark horse to eventually crack the top 10. They have only fell to Nebraska so far in duals and being four spots higher in these rankings than tournament reflect this teams dual strength. They have wins over Minnesota, Princeton, Pittsburgh, Rider and Edinboro. UNC holds their spot based on wins over Minnesota and having only lost to Rutgers. UVA is a team over-performing their tournament ranking. This is largely in part due to their win over ODU, the 12th ranked tournament team.

For the first time in a long time Minnesota is actually a better tournament team than dual team. This will balance out over the year as their guys continue to improve. They’ve lost to four quality teams in NC State, UNC, Lehigh and Oklahoma State. Stanford checks in at 19 and CMU with their wins over Rider (a VERY sneaky dual team with wins over Northwestern, Utah Valley and Kent State) and Purdue.

Parker's Stone Memorial gets a rare win over their neighbors to the west on the upper-cumberland...

http://m.crossville-chronicle.com/sports/local_sports/smhs-wrestling-team-defeats-cookeville-coffee-county/article_f12abb9e-9f76-11e5-8405-f79bda6cdd56.html?mode=jqm

SMHS wrestling team defeats Cookeville,

The SMHS wrestling team defeated Coffee County and Cookeville on Tuesday night by scores of 71-6 and 51-30 respectively.

“These were great wins for us, especially the Cookeville match," Panthers wrestling coach Brian Parker said. "This is only the second time we have beaten this in 10 years that we have beaten them because they have a greater middle school program.â€

In the Coffee County match, the Panthers got pins from Xavier Findley, Masion Connock, Marco Hernandez, Chandler Brickle, Ronnie Wyllins and Jonah Richards. Jacob Flannery had a major decision. Anthony Alegria and Christian Gabbard won by decision. Dylan Kemmer, Pedro Villalobos, Jordan Bowles, and Justin Johnson had forfeits.

“Most of our guys wrestled as expected in this match," Parker said. "Masion and Jonah are doing a great job as rookies in varsity spots. They are getting better every match and learning from their rookie mistakes. Christian is wrestling tough against kids 30 to 40 pounds heavier than him and pulling out big wins.â€

The Cookeville match started at 106 pounds where the Cavaliers pulled out to a 12-point lead with pins at 106 and 113. The Panthers answered back with two pins of their own with Bowles (120) and Findley (126).

With the score tied 12-12, Cookeville got a pin at 132 pounds but then the Panthers got a decision from Alegria (138) and a pin from Hernandez (145) to take a three-point lead.

“Bowles and Findley have been coming on strong lately. Alegria has been struggling with a shoulder injury but fights to the end of every match. He squeaked out this win against a very tough kid,†said Parker.

After a tough loss at 152 pounds, the Panthers lost the lead for a few minutes. However, they got it back with three pins in a row by Flannery (160), Wyllins (170) and Richards (182).

With the score at 39-24, the Panthers sealed the victory with a pin by Johnson at 220 pounds. Christian Gabbard finished the night with a come-from–behind pin at heavyweight.

“We did what was expected at 160, 170 and 220, these guys know what it takes to win," said Parker. "Richards and Gabbard really stepped it up. Richards has some natural talent that shows more in each match. Christian is starting to show a ‘no quit’ attitude in his matches and he is finding ways to win the tough ones.

“I am very pleased with our efforts tonight and look forward to the matches to come.â€

Nice coverage from Mr Hunt on Ryan's stronger than usual December team, that typically peaks in late January to mid-February...

Father Ryan Spanks Cleveland In Battle Of State Champions, 53-10

Purple Irish Among Favorites In Saturday's Al Miller Cleveland Duals

Friday, December 11, 2015 - by John Hunt

CLEVELAND – There have been some classic battles on the wrestling mat between state powers Father Ryan and Cleveland in years past on the eve of the Al Miller Cleveland Duals, but Friday’s match at the Jones Wrestling Center wasn’t one of them.

Last year’s match came down to several criteria levels as both teams won seven matches and the final score was deadlocked.

Father Ryan won by the slightest of margins.

That wasn’t the case this year as the Purple Irish bolted to a 25-0 lead by winning the first five matches as they breezed to a 53-10 victory over the Blue Raiders in the battle of defending state champions.

For the evening, the Purple Irish won 12 of 14 matches and had the first takedown in 10 of those matches.

Michael Whiteside earned a 12-4 major decision at 120 and Colton Landers got a first-period pin at 132 to spark Cleveland’s effort, but it was all Father Ryan the rest of the way as they recorded four pins, four regular decisions, three major decisions and one technical fall as they improved to 8-0 on the young season.

“We’re getting better and I’m absolutely happy with the way we wrestled tonight,†said Father Ryan coach Pat Simpson afterward.

“We only lost two matches and you don’t do that very often against Cleveland.  We weren’t really sure what they had, but our guys wrestled hard.

“We’re a veteran team with 11 starters back and we have a lot of experience.  We just hope it pays off in February, but we have to get ready for tomorrow,†he added, referring to the duals that have 16 teams on tap for Saturday.

George Hooker got the Purple Irish off and running with a 12-3 major decision at 195 before Ben Stacey and Rotimi Bambose posted back-to-back pins in the two heaviest weight classes.

James Killian added a 5-2 decision at 106 and Christian Simpson had a second-period pin at 113 before Whiteside got the Blue Raiders on the board with a 12-4 major at 120.

Landers had a 70-second fall at 132, but the rest of the evening belonged to those guys from Nashville as they won the final six matches.

Cleveland coach Jake Yost knew his team was in for a big challenge, but he wasn’t expecting to get whipped like they did.

“You never expect to get beat like that and it’s real obvious that we aren’t where we need to be.  The good news is that we fought.  We didn’t just roll over and give up, but Father Ryan is a really good team,†he expressed while mats were being moved in preparation for Saturday’s duals.

“We were outclassed in a couple of spots, but we just have to look at the positives.  We can’t ignore what we did wrong, but we have a long way to go and a long season to get there.  But no doubt, this was a little bit of an eye-opener for us,†he concluded.

SATURDAY’S DUALS begin with action on six matches in four pools.  Matches will be held in the volleyball gym, the cafeteria and Jones Wrestling Center with the first one set to begin at 8:30.

The field includes six teams from Tennessee, two from Alabama and eight from Georgia.

In addition to Father Ryan and Cleveland, other Tennessee teams include Baylor, Bradley, Soddy Daisy and McCallie while the two from Alabama include Oak Mountain and Buckhorn.

Those eight from Georgia include Carrolton, Cambridge, Woodland, Heritage, Sonoraville, Gilmer, Pope and Southeast Whitfield.

Pool winners will meet in the semifinals around 2:30 with the championship match to follow.

Father Ryan Beats Baylor For Cleveland Duals Title

Purple Irish Impressive With Lopsided Wins Over State's Best Teams

Saturday, December 12, 2015 - by John Hunt

CLEVELAND – It was a rematch of last year’s championship match in the Al Miller Cleveland Duals here at Cleveland High School Saturday, but the results were reversed this year.

Father Ryan beat Baylor in its latest meeting, winning by a 34-23 margin after winning four earlier matches and improving to 13-0 for the young season.

Woodland finished third after beating Cleveland by a 42-24 score in the consolation round.

The initial state wrestling poll came out earlier in the week with Baylor and Bradley both ranked ahead of Father Ryan.

Whether or not that was used as a motivational tool, the Purple Irish proved that the poll may have a different look after beating Baylor and Bradley on Saturday after whipping Cleveland on Friday night.

“We’ve had a great weekend here,†said veteran Father Ryan coach Pat Simpson following Saturday’s final match.

“Our kids were a little bit disappointed with that first poll, so we may have been wrestling with a little bit more purpose because of that.  It was a close match as always with Baylor and the key may have been our win at 285.

“That was a match we weren’t sure we could win, but Jeremy beating a defending state champ was huge.  It’s still early, but Baylor beat us three times last year and we’re just trying to even things out,†he added.

“Father Ryan wrestled really well, but I thought we gave a good effort,†said Baylor coach Ben Nelson.

“We’re just trying to get better, but they outfought us in a couple of spots.  They were better coached and better prepared and that’s all on me, but it’s up to us to catch up now,†he concluded with a smile.

The final match had four lead changes.

Father Ryan’s biggest lead was at 34-20 following a 21-9 major decision by Trey Chalifoux at 126 while Baylor’s biggest lead came at 14-9 after Khamari Whimper posted a 16-6 major decision at 182.

There were only three pins in the match with Father Ryan getting one each from George Hooker and James Killian while Baylor countered with a fall from Caleb Powell.  The Purple Irish also had a forfeit at 113.

While Father Ryan beat Baylor for first place, Woodland had Cleveland’s number in the consolation final, winning by a comfortable 42-24 margin.

Cleveland had beaten Gilmer, Sonoraville and Buckhorn to win its pool and faced Baylor in one semifinal.  It wasn’t very close as the Red Raiders advanced with the 43-27 victory.  Father Ryan beat Woodland by a 48-21 final in the other semifinal.

Colton Landers got things started in the match with Baylor, giving his team a 3-0 lead with a 3-1 decision over Jack Reynolds at 132 pounds.

By the time Seth Garcia had recorded a first-period pin at 195, Baylor was well on its way after winning straight matches for a commanding 28-3 lead.

The difference was 37-9 when Bryce Pond and Logan Whiteside sandwiched pins around a forfeit to David Freeman to draw the Blue Raiders within 10 at 37-27, but Baylor won the final match by pin for the 16-point difference.

“I don’t think we forced our position enough, but we fought hard and that’s all I can ask,†said Cleveland coach Jake Yost following the loss to Baylor.

“We lost a close one at 160, but Baylor is always good.  They just happened to win a few more than we did today,†he added.

Yost was still somewhat upbeat, even after losing by 18 points to Woodland.

“We lost the last two, but won three of five matches today and that’s not bad for a bunch of young guys.  We still have a long way to go, but I think we got better today.  We just have to keep building.

“Today was a good day as we saw a lot of good stuff, but this is all just practice for February,†he concluded with a smile.

While Cleveland finished fourth, the Bradley Bears weren’t as fortunate.

They were in the same pool with teams from Southeast Whitfield, Pope and Father Ryan.  The Bears breezed to a win in those first two, but the Purple Irish were simply too strong on Saturday.

Bradley was victorious in four matches with Hunter Parker and Donnie Beyer getting decisions at 132 and 160 pounds respectively, before the Bears ended the match on pins from D.J. Hicks at 113 in 1:01 and by 120-pound Ryan McElhaney in 5:06.

Bradley coach Ben Smith had been at Cleveland on Friday to watch Father Ryan win in a 53-10 romp and felt like his team had a chance to compete with Nashville’s best team.

It didn’t turn out that way.

“There’s not much to say.  We just got whipped,†Smith began after a post-match pep talk with his team.

“They’re clearly better than we are in spots, but when our captain Knox Fuller got beat, that completely took the wind out of our sails.  Give Father Ryan a lot of credit.  They have a fine team.

“I certainly hate losing to anyone, but that was still a fun match in a great atmosphere.  We still have a couple of matches left, so we’ll see what happens, but we couldn’t beat our way out of a wet bag in that last one,†Smith added.

The Bears did finish the day on a positive note with a win over Soddy Daisy.

UTC Wrestlers Win 31-12 Over Campbell

Saturday, December 12, 2015

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team took eight of 10 matches in a 31-12 win at Campbell today.  The Mocs move to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in Southern Conference action, while the Camels drop to 0-6 and 0-1 in league matches.

UTC scored bonus points in five of its eight wins, including a 19-2 technical fall by freshman Alonzo Allen to open action at 125.  Campbell actually led after two matches thanks to a pin by junior Nathan Kraisser over sophomore Cody Hill at 133.

Chattanooga responded with three straight wins, beginning with a major by junior Michael Pongracz at 141.  Freshman Roman Boylen moved up to 149 and scored a win, followed by freshman Kamaal Shakur's tech fall at 157.

Paul Duggan pinned freshman Dominic Lampe at 165 to close out Campbell's scoring.  Junior Sean Mappes followed with a major decision at 174.

The best match of the day came at 184.  Senior John Lampe and Camel junior Ville Heino split two very close matches two years ago.  This one was more of the same with Lampe carrying a 3-1 lead into the final period.  After choosing down, Heino escaped and took the lead with a takedown with just under a minute left.  Lampe escaped to tie at 4-4, and won the match with a takedown of his own with 13 second on the clock.

That gave the Mocs a 24-12 lead and all but put it out of reach.  Chattanooga closed out the dual with a major decision by No. 18 Scottie Boykin at 197 and a win from 12th-ranked Jared Johnson at heavyweight.

The Mocs return home on Friday, Dec. 18, when they host undefeated and 17th-ranked Ohio in Maclellan Gym.  Match time is set for 6:00 p.m. (E.S.T.) with live scoring and a SoConDN broadcast available on GoMocs.com.
