S wrestling camp bringing in athletes of all ages, skill Featured

COOKEVILLE — The Cookeville High wrestling program is holding a fall wrestling camp for students of all ages at the CHS Wrestling Complex, with meetings every Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. through Nov. 19.

The camp is free of charge and will take new athletes up to the final session.

CHS wrestling head coach Scott Cook says the camp has received more than 100 athletes of varying ages, and averaging 60 to 70 for each workout.

“The community has been so good to us (the high school wrestling team) to support us and help us be successful, we wanted to give back,†Cook said. “The camp really has three main goals, overall physical development, confidence building and exposure to the sport of wrestling. The first 35 to 40 minutes of each workout is non specific athletic development, we do gymnastics, agility drills, speed and strength work along with balance, reaction time and coordination activities, the the last 45 minutes we work on wrestling specific drills. The athletes are moving the entire time, it’s pretty fast paced.â€

The turnout has been great for the camp, but it’s the variety of kids that the camp has brought in that has been a pleasant surprise.

“The greatest part of this is the vast age difference,†Cook said. “I was concerned the range in ability level would be a problem. We have athletes from Pre-K to high school seniors. But it has really been a blessing. The older athletes in the room have taken the little ones under their wing to mentor them and shown positive leadership skills, and the little ones absolutely look up to the big boys and girls as role models.

“It’s pretty awesome to see a 17-year-old athlete busting out some push-ups and then sprinting across the room as fast as he can with his kindergarten buddy working as hard as he can to keep up with him, and then encouraging each other when they get finished. I like to say that was part of the plan, but it has just kind of happened and it has been amazing to watch and be a part of. It’s just unbelievable to watch that many kids work that hard and have fun doing it.â€

All campers have access to the training facility as well as the same equipment and resources that CHS uses to train its varsity wrestling team — and many of those student-athletes are training alongside the campers.

The camp is run by Cook and other high school wrestling coaches, as well as middle school coaches and volunteers.

“Everyone of us is devoted to the positive development of anyone that walks in the door and wants to participate,†Cook said. “All of the activities we do are age appropriate and we modify them where necessary so everyone can accomplish the task.

“I have been coaching for over 20 years, and this is by far one of the most special and positive things I have had a chance to witness. Nobody leaves the building at the end of the night without a smile on their face. We are committed to giving back to the community and offering something extremely positive and beneficial to our children, this is only the beginning of free camps and clinics we will be providing throughout the entire year.â€

Cael and his Nittany Lions are back...

http://www.pennlive.com/sports/index.ssf/2015/10/penn_state_sits_atop_preseason.html

Just because it's far too early to get hung up on preseason college wrestling rankings doesn't mean it isn't enjoyable to get hung up on preseason college wrestling rankings.

So let's break down what's out there thus far, beginning with the team rankings.

InterMat and Flo Wrestling each have Penn State ranked at the top, and InterMat's tournament power index ratings has the Lions four points better than Oklahoma State at season's end.

Wrestling Insider Magazine (WIN) has Penn State fourth behind Oklahoma State, Ohio State and Iowa but that must be discounted because WIN does not include freshmen and redshirt freshmen. Rumor has it that three redshirt freshmen whose last names begin with N just might score a point or two for the Nittany Lions.

Jason Nolf (157), Bo Nickal (174) and Nick Nevills (285) wrestled unattached for Penn State last season while redshirting, and a bone in Nevills' foot failed to remain attached in one piece during the Southern Scuffle.

Big UTC matches coming up next week...

http://www.gomocs.com/news/2015/10/21/WR_1021153049.aspx

With the upcoming Blue-Gold Match on Thursday, Oct. 29, the Chattanooga Mocs wrestling team is just over a week away from the start of the 2015-16 season.  Head coach Heath Eslinger, the staff and the rest of the team have been hard at work over the summer, and competition will be fierce for spots on the mat.

Eslinger, a two-time Southern Conference Coach of the Year who is entering his seventh season at UTC, has to fill some pretty big holes right off the bat at the top of his lineup.  Gone from last year are the 2015 Southern Conference Wrestler of the Year in Sean Boyle and four-time SoCon Champion Nick Soto.

Boyle, a transfer from Michigan, finished one win away from All-American honors with a 32-7 record.  Soto became just the fourth in school history to win four league championships with his victory at the SoCon Tournament.  His career mark of 114-38 includes the fourth-most wins in school history.

"Sean Boyle's maturity is hard to replace," explained Eslinger.  "I think we have some talented kids that can grow into his maturity, but he gave us a lot of leadership and that will be missed.  Soto was in the lineup for four years, and it is always tough to replace a top-10 guy who competed like he did throughout his career."

Freshman Alonzo Allen is the likely replacement at 125.  A two-time state champion at Rockdale County High School in Conyers, Ga., Allen sat out last season as a redshirt.

"Alonzo really turned it on since his senior year in high school," said Eslinger.  "He has put on some size.  He came in a little small but has grown into the weight class.  He had a great spring and we are excited to see where he is competitively."

Also competing at 125 are Cody Minnick(Coal City, Ill.) and Toribio Navarro(Cleveland, Tenn.).  Minnick is a two-time state champion with a 95-2 prep record over the last two seasons.  Navarro was a three time champ at nearby Bradley Central High School.

"Cody has had a great summer and great fall," said Eslinger.  "That is a Blue-Gold match that should be really exciting.

"Toribio is probably where Alonzo was last year.  Still a little small for the weight class, but he is getting bigger and working hard.  He will definitely be a guy that we count on down the road."

UTC wrestling fans may remember Alex Ward, who was a freshman with the Mocs in 2012-13.  He was 9-6 at 133, including a 3-1 mark in dual matches and a third place finish at the Newberry Open.  He spent the last two years on a Mormon mission and returns as a sophomore in 2015-16.

"I don't think we forgot about Alex, it is just that no one has seen him for two years," joked Eslinger.  "He brings a ton of maturity and a work ethic that is really second-to-none."

Competition for the starting job at 133 will come down to Ward and true freshman Chris DeBien.  DeBien is one of the top high school recruits to join the Mocs in recent years.  A four-time state champ at Cleveland (Tenn.) High School, he was also a high school national champion.  He finished his senior season ranked No. 18 in the country at 132 pounds according to Intermat.

"Chris is one of the top guys we have landed here at Chattanooga in quite some time," explained Eslinger.  "He is lights out.  He is training well in the practice room and it will be exciting to see what happens there.

"Overall, this is one weight class where we have a lot of depth.  Cody Hill had a good summer and is doing a good job.  Jake Huffine is a true freshman doing a great job, and Austin Gould is another kid that has been in our program from three years.  He knows the expectations and adds a ton of value to what we are doing here."

GoMocs.com is running previews throughout the week leading up to the Blue-Gold Match.  Action begins at 6:00 p.m., at the annual intrasquad scrimmage in Maclellan Gym and admission is free.  Season tickets are on sale now on GoMocs.com or by calling the UTC Ticket Office at (423) 266-MOCS (6627).

SPARTANBURG, SC  (gomocs.com)  -- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team was picked to win the Southern Conference Championship, according to the preseason coaches poll the league office released today.  The Mocs grabbed 45 points and five first place votes in the listing.

Junior Sean Mappes was the lone Moc on the preseason All-SoCon team.  He is the returning league champ at 174 pounds and posted a 17-12 overall record last season.

The coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams or student-athletes.

The Mocs have won three-straight SoCon regular season titles and 15 overall since the conference starting crowning a season winner in 1994.  UTC has also won five straight tournament championships and 29 overall since joining the league in 1978.

Appalachian State was second in the preseason poll with 40 points and one first-place vote. The Mountaineers put a league-best three student-athletes on the preseason all-conference team. 2015 SoCon champions Mike Longo (141 pounds) and Denzel Dejournette (heavyweight) were preseason all-conference selections at those weights, while Vito Pasone, who wrestled at 133 last season, was the preseason pick at 125, where he wrestled for the majority of his redshirt freshman campaign.

The Citadel earned 35 points to edge Gardner-Webb for third in the preseason poll and saw Matt Frisch and Aaron Walker earn preseason recognition at 149 pounds and 157 pounds, respectively. Frisch has won SoCon titles at 149 (2015) and 157 (2013), while Walker has taken the title at 157 in each of the last two seasons.

Gardner-Webb was slotted fourth in the preseason poll with 34 points and the remaining two first-place votes. Campbell, which was ineligible for the 2015 tournament due to APR penalties, will return to the tournament this season and was picked fifth in the preseason poll with 28 points. The Camels saw Nathan Kraisser (133) and Ville Heino (184 pounds) earn spots on the preseason all-conference team.

SIUE finished sixth in the preseason voting with 22 points and put defending SoCon champions Connor McMahon (165) and Jake Tindle (197) on the preseason squad. McMahon was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the 2015 tournament after topping the Nos. 1, 3 and 4 seeds en route to winning the 165-pound title.

VMI (13 points) and Davidson (seven) round out the poll.

Five of the 10 preseason all-conference selections – Appalachian State's Longo and Dejournette, The Citadel's Walker, SIUE's Tindle and Chattanooga's Mappes – earned the maximum number of points possible in the voting process.

Be sure to check out the Blue-Gold match on Thursday, Oct. 29, at Maclellan Gym.  The annual scrimmage is a FREE event and begins at 6:00 p.m.

The first official home dual is Saturday, Nov. 7, against No. 24 Stanford.  Action begins at 11:00 a.m. in Maclellan Gym.  Season tickets are on sale now on GoMocs.com or by calling the UTC Ticket Office at (423) 266-MOCS (6627).

High caliber wrestling competition just down the road in Atlanta.... Scotty Boykin and a total of 20 All-Americans are in this event including 2x champ Alex Dieringer...

NWCA All-Star Classic brings top college wrestling talent to Atlanta

Story by Ken Chrzanowski

Tuesday, October 27, 2015

Many of the nation’s top NCAA Division I wrestlers will compete locally Sunday in the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star Classic, a 50th anniversary event that will be held at Georgia Tech’s McCamish Pavilion.

The showcase, which will be broadcast live for the first time on ESPNU, will feature a unique dual meet format as well as a few of the top wrestlers Gwinnett County has produced in recent years.

For one of the organizers, this Sunday is a labor of love. Rob Larmore, an All-American at William & Mary who lives in Atlanta area, helped get the event here, and it is tangible evidence of how wrestling in the state of Georgia has grown exponentially since Larmore’s time as a head coach at Westminster in the 1990s.

“The National Wrestling Coaches Association outlined the criteria we had to meet if we wanted to host,†Larmore said. “A large portion was to gather the necessary sponsorships to make this event, the biggest wrestling event in the state since the 1996 Olympics, happen.â€

The golden anniversary event benefits both the NWCA and the Wrestlers in Business group, both of which are non-profit organizations. To celebrate, the NWCA has invited every wrestler who has taken part in this event dating back to 1966 to attend. This group includes Olympic and World champions in wrestling.

Local wrestlers participating include 125-pounder Sean Russell, a Collins Hill graduate and four-time state champion, who currently wrestles for Edinboro. He is coming off an 18-8 campaign as a freshman for the Scots. This most likely will be the only time Russell gets to wrestle in his home state during his college career because there are no Division I wrestling programs in the state of Georgia.

Parkview grad Kamaal Shakur, who attends Chattanooga, will face Chad Pyke, formerly of Woodward Academy and currently at N.C. State, in a 157-pound match. Buford’s Chip Ness, also a four time high school state champion who now wrestles at North Carolina, will face four-time Georgia state champion Chance McClure, a Commerce grad now at Virginia, in a 197-pound match. Ness is coming off a 15-15 freshman season with the Tar Heels.

Other wrestlers with Georgia ties slated to compete are Jason Grimes (174 pounds/Holy Innocents/American University) as well as a women’s match between Jennifer Juarez, who is attending Life College, vs. Cindy Calixto of Emmanuel College. These two schools are the only two in Georgia that offer women’s wrestling programs. Juarez moved from New York City to attend Life College specifically because they offered a wrestling program.

In addition to the local products, a who’s who of collegiate wrestling will be on the mat. Alex Dieringer (165) of Oklahoma State, a two-time NCAA champion, leads the lineup. The 2015 NCAA champions participating are Cody Brewer (141) from Oklahoma and Nathan Tomasello (125) of Ohio State. Fellow NCAA champ Isaiah Martinez (157) of Illinois also was scheduled to appear, but an injury last week forced him to decline the invitation.

A total of 20 All-Americans are in the event.

“One of the great things about this event is that the results will have no impact on the wrestlers’ ranking or NCAA seeding,†Larmore said. “It is a pure exhibition of some the best returning college wrestlers in the country and they don’t have to worry about the result impacting them down the line.â€

The doors open at 2:30 p.m. for Sunday’s undercard, with the main event scheduled for 5 p.m. Ticket prices start at $10. For more information on the matches and advance tickets, go to www.nwcaonline.com/NWCAWebSite/Events/nwcaallstarclassic.aspx. Tickets can also be purchased at the door.

High honors to Bradley by TSSAA...

http://clevelandbanner.com/stories/af-bridgesregion-soccerhonors-awarded,21106

A local school and two individuals were included on the TSSAA’s list of 2014-25 A.F. Bridges Award winners.

For Athletic District 3, Bradley Central wrestling coach Ben Smith was crowned Male Coach of the Year.

“It’s an honor anytime you are recognized for something that has ‘Coach of the Year’ (attached to it), but its an even bigger honor to be recognized for anything involving citizenship and sportsmanship. These values are what we are trying to instill in our kids, and being recognized for it is nice,†Smith said.

“Bradley wrestling stresses character, pride and intensity — character always comes first. We want these kids to be tough and competitive on the mat, but the character that they learn in this sport is what will take them to true success in life. We’re all here to coach the kids to use wrestling as a vehicle to be successful later in life.â€

Bradley Assistant Principal Greg Geren also received A.F. Bridges honors as the Athletic District 3 Official of the Year.

“We’re proud for, and of, Coach Smith. He has done a great job of having carried on the Bradley tradition. This is a great honor and he deserves it,†Bradley Central AD Turner Jackson stated. “Greg is one of our assistant principals. I think he is one of the best officials around, and is very deserving (of this award).â€

Also receiving recognition is Walker Valley High School, one of three Class AAA schools in East Tennessee up for the A.F. Bridges State Award of Excellence. Hardin Valley and Oak Ridge are the other two schools in consideration.

According to the TSSAA, this is the highest award that can be bestowed upon a school to honor its overall efforts to promote citizenship and sportsmanship at school and athletic contests.

For a school to be considered, it had to have no reported unsportsmanlike conduct incidents during the previous school year, and also had to display an ‘overall positive effort to teach, expect and demand a positive atmosphere of sportsmanship’ at its events...

Also, Cleveland's Sam DeBien earned the top honor this season, being named the Region 3-AAA MVP.

Appearing on the first team All-Region list is DeBien

    • You are correct.   The teacher's pay scale is virtually the same in Knox County, now, as it is at Oak Ridge.   The coaching supplements are still higher at Oak Ridge, from what I was told, but not a huge difference.   Plus, Rusty is going from a position coach to an OC position, which is what he was at South Doyle and where his comfort zone is.  And from a special education teaching slot to a PE teaching slot.  There is a lot of positivity in that move without even considering the coaching aspect.   Anybody who sees something negative here is just looking for negativity to begin with.  But some live in that world.   Really good hire for Brent.  He now has two experienced and quality coordinators and can concentrate on being a head football coach.
