Not sure that we want a rerun coach, one that has been here before. There is an old saying that you can never go home again. Look at the coaches who have left a school then returned and was successful. Hard to find any. coaches build relationships with the community and when they leave, either by choice or force, many of those relationships are damaged beyond repair. Also, hiring alumni is not always the best option, look at SP. Let's look at some of the names... Fritz: Obviously he is held in high regard around here so why would he want to come back and take a chance on tarnishing his reputation? Besides, we can't come close to matching his current paycheck. Evans: Good guy but has not proven to be successful as a head coach. Wasn't given a fair chance at Jasper and may have been railroaded at UHS. Jason should be in line to be the next head coach at Grundy and that should happen this upcoming year. He is well liked out there and it would be a good opportunity for him to show that he has grown since his days at Jasper. Price: will never come off the mountain from his private school.

I've said it before, we need to go out and find a young coach (head or assistant) at a successful program and help him bring in some help. Someone who doesn't have ties to the area, isn't related to most of the town and who is strong enough to do things his way. Look at Jasper to see how this works.

Whatever direction we go, I don't think we need to make a decision until after Dec 6th to see who all might be interested. We also don't need Mr Layne to be the only one making the decision because we'll get another good ol boy and more years of mediocrity. Just my two cents worth.

Problem with not getting someone with ties or hometown guy is that whoever comes will not be in Sequatchie long. It will just be a launching pad for bigger and better paying jobs. So what you get by getting a young guy with no ties is one of two things. 1- someone looking to boost their careers. 2- someone who is just not a very good coach. This county needs a program coach. One who knows how to win and one who is going nowhere. Needs to have hands on with the middle school and youth programs. Set up a system that is run for many years. The examples you give are frankly because those are good guys but not great coaches. How about Davis at Polk? How about Rice at Wayne County, how about Creasy at Trousdale? How about Grider at South Pitt? Those are hometown guys who have all been very successful doing it just like I said.

I can tell you why Creasey wins at TC, cause he runs the program not the administation or community. He is the first and last vote on all situations. Football is a priority there, most towns it is not.

Do you really think those guys you mentioned would be long-term hires? Really? Grider looked to move but it was to Georgia for more money than we could ever pay him. I bet if you talked to him his plan was to get those big dollars for five years then retire and draw checks from both states. Smart choice on his part. I doubt he would be willing to come to Dunlap for equal or less money than he makes now. Rice was rumored to have been interested in the Jasper job but I wouldn't think he'd be a long-term commitment either. Probably stay until his son graduated then move on. Davis has been at Polk a while. He may be interested but again, how much longer is he going to coach and would he be a long-term hire?? The days of 15-20 year coaches in HS are gone. If a HS coach can survive the politics and pressure for 8-10 years they are looking to make a move. As they get closer to that 20 year teaching mark, they start looking at 3-5 year plans where they can make the most money and increase their retirement. It would be hard to get an established coach to come to Dunlap for the long-term. At least with a young coach, we might be able to keep him here for 5-10 years and let him build the program. Depends on how well we support him. Younger coaches are also more likely to be involved in helping build the youth programs and feeder teams because have the level of energy that is required to invest that much time. As coaches get older it's harder to maintain that energy level. Like i said, it's just my two cents worth and it's my opinion, but I think a young, energetic coach from a successful program is what we need at SC.

Very good point here. People around here act like football is important but the Adminstration ties the coaches hands. Trousdale is a top notch program.

I'm not saying hire those guys. You missed my whole point. I said those guys were hometown or guys with ties that have gotten it done and ran very successful programs.

If that's the case then you have to look at the fact that those guys were young when they first got involved with their respective programs. The success that they have now (or had in Vic's case) was due in large part to years of hard work. So that being said, we are back at my original state my that we need a young, energetic coach. The only thing you and I differ in (I think) is where that coach should come from. I ask you. Who do we have that's young enough and energetic enough to turn this program around? There is only one guy on staff that I would remotely have confidence in and when I talked to him over the weekend he said that he definitely was not interested. So, who do we have out there that is coaching somewhere that is young enough and would want to move back home for a long-term coaching stint? Let's see some names. That's why I say it needs to be an outsider who has proven themselves at a successful program. We may only keep them for 4 or 5 years but maybe they can work hard enough to get the feeder programs on the same page with the HS and it will make an easier transition for their replacement. I'm all for hiring local but so far no one has provided any names of peoe that would be able to get our program to the level that everyone says they want it to be.

    • Congratulations to the Warrior baseball team winning the Region Championship.  Last night the football team beat Franklin Co 33-0 in their spring scrimmage. Warriors looked very good. Missing a few players who were playing baseball but still absolutely dominated. A lot of young ones got in halfway through the 3rd when the score reached 33-0. QB Tilton Pickett looked very sharp.  Sam Pickett is on another level this season. Seems to have put on 15 to 20 lbs in the off season and added a step as well. Transfer from last year Williamson caught numerous balls and is very elusive. Lots of athletes on this team. Defense was smothering and will only get better. The head coach from Sewanee was in attendance and offered 2 kids after the game. Could be a special year.
