Darel is learning a lot on the fly. People close to him says he always talks about he has to learn to do things different and sometimes that's tough. I hear he has a good relationship with Coach Gaddis, meaning he trusts him enough to talk to him and respects him. The best look was after a game and Gaddis said something to him in his ear (of course he had to bend down) and Darel gave that big smile. And I remember seeing him crying after Rhea County game. For me that put it in perspective. He's a kid.

Wonder what Gaddis said? What is it about Gaddis that enables him to be able to develop a relationship with players like Middleton?

Easy. From my understanding Darel grew up without a father figure, so just take it upon yourself as a Coach to let the kid know you're there for them and always willing to help them and be there for them. Relate to them. It's simple with a kid like Darel for a Coach like Joe to take that role upon himself and just show him he cares. Doesn't take much man. You should know that being a father.

That makes sense but I'm sure Middleton has been coached by other coaches who have children of their own, but he seems to have been more successful here than at other schools.

Maybe they aren't as personable as Coach G? Not everybody is easy to relate to. Gaddis just has a way of relating well to young men.

I've definitely seen far less personable coaches in my life than what you're describing in Joe Gaddis. For OR's sake, I'm glad he came back.

I'm glad he came back too, for lots of reasons. I actually saw him today at First United Methodist Church here in Oak Ridge. He was on the front row where they held the prayer vigil for the player who passed away. He hugged every player that walked past him. They seemed to need that and maybe he did too. He seems like a class act. What a sad but necessary service it was. The church was packed with students and our coach was there to help any students that he could. This is so very sad

I truly believe his players would run through a brick wall for him.
