Blue Cross Bowl: Knox West vs Hillsboro

Hillsboro has shutout 5 teams this year. The combined record of those teams? 10-40

West has shutout 4 teams this year and given they didn't sub in about 4 more games they could 7 shutouts. Just saying. The HVA game they ran a kickoff back so the defense did not allow a point in that game.

I don't buy into the "____ has to play a perfect game" bs...no high school team plays a perfect game, not even maryville...so I don't see much of a point in talking about that. In order for west to win I believe this is what has to happen:

 

Force turnovers (but how?) hillsboro's qb looks like he thinks he's aaron Rodgers in he pocket. I'm not saying he's bad, what I watched of last week was extremely impressive. BUT he looked extremely confident in his arm. If west's secondary can play tight coverage, I think that qb may try to force a few Johnny Manziel plays, and that may lead to opportunities for turnovers.

 

2nd-don't abandon your darn bread and butter! People like to say that being one dimensional will lose you games...well, west would have won state last year had they not started trying to pass with 7 minutes left in the game. They had plenty of time, and had a rb who averaged 15 yards per carry. Dance with who brung ya.

 

Don't be stupid about the play calling. If the interior d line of Hillsboro is the weak link, attack it. Don't waste plays running around the edge and passing when you don't need to. Unless running the ball stops working...don't stop.

 

Adjust at freaking halftime.

I think you should ask Coach Cummings to join the staff. You would be a great addition!

Up 28-0...with what could and should have been 42-0 at half last week...what adjustments would you have made Lombardi?

Perhaps I was referencing the state game from last year where west was up 14-0 at half time and let Henry Co come back, Sherlock. It's not like it's a one time thing. There's a history of it. The team is prepared for the game (Cummings and staff...I would argue mostly staff...make sure the team is ready for the game) but things start going wrong, Cummings loses his cool.

 

Last week when the rhea county defense was doing such a good job against the run I would've started running gun rollout plays with Marshall to set up screens to Cottrell and draws underneath...make their penetration come back and bite them. West also SHOULD have a few designed tunnel screens but they don't.

All you have to do is create half a step for Marshall and he gets you a 30 yard gain and Cottrell gets you 6.

It was 14-7 at the half last year....do you not think other coaches and players on the field adjust and get a feel for the game. Its not like they are playing a 1-14 team...they were 14-0 for a reason.

What I saw was West get physically dominated after about the first quarter and a half. That sounds more like a player thing.

Typing while at work. My mistake. And yes that's absolutely true west did get physically dominated...but west didn't make it to she 'ship by bein physically imposing. They got it done by getting Marshall and Cottrell the ball in space and letting them do what they do. They could not scheme up touches for those two that day.

LET PA CHIME IN HERE....IF I WAS THE OTHER TEAM I KNOW ITS ONLY 2 PEOPLE YOU PRIMARILY  NEED TO STOP ON WEST AND THAT'S THE QB AND #5.....SO SOMEONE ELSE HAS GOT TO STEP UP...I REMEMBER THEY PUT A LICK ON #5 WHERE HIS HELMET WENT AIRBORNE..SO I'M PRETTY SURE WEST HAS SOMEONE ELSE THAT CAN STEP UP..HILLSBORO IS JUST AS FAST AS A TEAM.....

I think this will be a slugfest. Probably similar to last years 5A Championship Game. I really think this game is to close to call. I will go out on a limb and take Hillsboro in a VERY close game.
