possum
This old geezer has to disagree with Evans being considered a good hire. Jason and his family are the nicest people that you could ever meet. I honestly hated the way things ended for him at MC. However were talking about the business side of things and he just wasn't getting the results that he should have been with the loaded group of talent that he had. Some people are not fit to fill the leader role. I know it was stated that he didn't apply, but was just chatting since its the slow time of the year. I wish him all the success and hope Grundy can get back to relevance. This old geezer loves it when the valley is a booming with good teams!! I have to disagree with you about Evans. I coached against him. His team improved year to year at Marion and had been given a chance to coach his third year he would have done as well as the next guy. The assistant principal who was one of his assistants, fired Jason and put on a joke of a coaching search and named himself head coach. He had the one good year with the kids Jason developed. Which would have been Jason"s third year. Had he been hired for the third year he would still be the head Coach and Marion would have not went through the problems they have had since he left. In my opinion I think the assistant principal knew they were going to have a great team, and if Jason came back for another year he would be hard to get rid of. Just my opinion. Look back on it and see if the wheels did not fall off after that guys first year.

Back to back 1-9 teams with 30-35 players playing. The next coach, Herron, went 4-6, 5-6, 13-1, 7-5...29 wins-18 loses. UHS will dress over 90 next season. I never though Evans was ever committed at UHS in his 1 year as defensive cord and 2 years as the head coach. Nice guy, just wasn't very successful
MikeLB
Grundy needs a HC that is committed to building a program from the little league level to the high school. We have lost that over the last several years. Our little league is down tremendously and our middle has been except last year. We didn't even have a jv high school team. We will lose several of the middle school kids to other counties unless a coach is hired they trust and believes will stick with them for the long haul. That has already been made perfectly clear by their parents. These are kids Grundy cannot afford to lose. We'll see what happens I guess, but we don't need a coach that's going to come to help his resume or try to use it as a stepping stone. The program or what little is left will suffer even more. UpperCumberlandMan
What was Coach Herron doing before he became the U head coach?. I think he was a HS assistant a few years at Macon and Jackson counties, then about 4 years as Cornerstone JR High head coach.
DelTavian
I'd ask to leave Jason and Upperman out of the discussion. Jason didn't apply. Let's stay focused on the candidates and the future. I could care less about the history of Upperman or their current coach. I'm sure a thread can be made for that. jackbacker2
So he was a MS coach. Ok. I was just wondering if that had been done before.
MikeLB
Alot of coaches start in middle school. My uncle coached in middle school football and even ms basketball. He know has 6 state rings I know of for sure 2 runner ups and 4 state championships. He may have added to that by now. So saying a ms coach is unqualified or a downgrade is insane. It's all about the Coach he has to have a vision and passion for the program.
UpperCumberlandMan
So he was a MS coach. Ok. I was just wondering if that had been done before. yes was at the middle school. But did have 2-3 years as assitant. At the HS level before that. If a coach is a good one, a middle school coach is as good as any other given the chance. rabuf82
Clay county and cohulla creek records should be thrown out the window. Both are irrelevant in high school football. To me this hire is very critical for Grundy. In the valley you have Vic back at sp and they are on the upswing and you have mc who has been pretty good the last few years. Anything short of a solid hire and I am betting some of those kids make their way down the valley to play at these better programs. Critical critical hire, my hunch is that the middle school coach gets it to save face. Not that I have a dog in the fight but I would venture to say that, in the history of the programs, Clay county has been more relevant overall than Grundy. Neither one of these teams have lit the world on fire as of late but to call another team irrelevant when your own team has been less than terrific is the pot calling the kettle black. Just saying, have a little respect for other struggling programs until you at least have a reason to think you deserve a "top tier coach". The kids that want to move because of the coaching hire will more than likely quit down the road anyway no matter who is brought it. Football players play football no matter the coach that is hired in. Everybody else is dead weight and in my opinion it is better for the program if they do leave. Who ever is hired in should be given a chance. Even the best coaches have had their share of down years at certain stops. Every situation is different. DelTavian
TheTruthPrevails isn't a Grundy person...so Grundy wasn't downing the other school.....just saying.
