Wrestling Program adds two Alums to Coaching Staff

Cumberland University head wrestling coach announces the addition of two wrestling alums to his staff. The Phoenix welcomed back former two-time All-American and previous assistant coach Nate Croley and recent graduate and Mid-South Conference Champion Ryan Long.

“My former assistant coach Tyler Smith left big shoes to be filled. I feel fortunate to be able to bring in two former Cumberland student-athletes,” Hicks said. “These guys are very familiar with our University and our program. The young men in our wrestling program will benefit from their expertise and mentorship of both of these young men. The transition should go smoothly as we get back to work soon.”

Smith left his post with the Phoenix over the summer to accept the Director of Wrestling and Men’s Head Coach position at Brewton-Parker.

Croley returns to Cumberland after spending time at Green Hill High School as an assistant coach in the wrestling program and a full time teacher. In the short time of Green Hill’s existence, Croley helped lead the Hawks to a Top 10 finish twice. He hs coached seven state placers and one TSSAA State Champion. He has had 15 athletes qualify for the state tournament.

The former All-American spent two seasons as the assistant coach for the Phoenix from 2018-2020. Croley helped coach seven NAIA All-Americans in just two seasons. In 2020-21, he helped lead the Phoenix to their highest-finish at Nationals with a fifth-place finish. That squad set a program record with five All-Americans that year.

As a competitor, Croley earned All-American honors his junior and senior seasons. He finished in seventh place in 2015-16 at 157 at the national championships in Topeka, Kan. He finished that season with a 25-6 at 157 and 30-9 overall at two different weight classes.

Croley repeated as an All-American in 2016-17 after placing third. The Pigeon Forge, Tenn., native lost in the main draw semifinals at 157 but came back with a pair of victories in the wrestleback to claim third place. He finished 32-10 overall in 2016-17.

He graduated from Cumberland with a bachelor’s Degree in Special Education in May 2017.

Hicks also announces the addition of Cumberland graduate Ryan Long to the staff.

Long is fresh off his wrestling career finishing out his last two seasons at Cumberland this past year. Prior to joining the Phoenix in 2021, Long wrestled at Brewton-Parker College in Georgia.

The Knoxville, Tenn., native won the 174-pound Mid-South Conference title and made his first trip to the NAIA National Championships a year ago.

Long was a national qualifier for the Barons spending three years with the program. He graduated with his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a concentration in health and wellness from Brewton-Parker. He earned his Master’s of Sport and Exercise Science Degree in 2023 from Cumberland.

The Cumberland wrestlers report to campus in the middle of August before preparing for the upcoming 2023-24 season.

The Higher Calling Youth Wrestling Club received a $17,500 donation from the Allan Jones Foundation. Pictured, from left, are Higher Calling Youth Wrestling Club Head Coach Josh Bosken and Bailey Jones, Vice President of Development and Web Marketing for Check Into Cash. ? ?

The Higher Calling Youth Wrestling Club of Cleveland continues to raise funding at a record setting pace and recently celebrated a large financial contribution from the Allan Jones Foundation.

Josh Bosken, head coach of Higher Calling, announced that his club received a check from the Jones Foundation for $17,500. The donation was a match to funds the club raised earlier this year.

“We fund raise constantly and as a result, we are the best-funded kids wrestling club in the United States,” said Bosken. “Thanks to the Allan Jones Foundation and others who step up to help these kids, we are celebrating the end of a great year.”

Higher Calling is a wrestling program that gives young wrestlers of all skill levels, grades K through 8, a chance to learn the essentials of practice and competition. The goal of the program is to train and maintain the highest-quality athletes to help continue the finest wrestling program in Tennessee.

The Foundation requires the club’s members to earn money themselves, which is later matched dollar-for-dollar, said Bailey Jones, Vice President of Development and Web Marketing for Check Into Cash. The Foundation is also the largest donor to the kids’ club of Cleveland’s crosstown rival Bradley Central.

“Our donation to Higher Calling along with the club’s own fundraising efforts, make it the highest funded kids club in the county,” said Mr. Jones. “We give the club the challenge to raise money on their own and we are always ready to double what they raise.”

Businessman Jones said Bosken is the primary the reason that Cleveland won state championships in 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022,  and again this year when the boys made history with a TSSAA record of six state wrestling championships in a row. Cleveland was also the first school nationwide to win both boys and girls state championships in wrestling.

Bosken also announced this week that on Nov. 20 at 10 a.m., the Cleveland wrestling program – along with Cleveland Mayor Kevin Brooks - will host its first-ever “Media Day,” to celebrate the the beginning of the TSSAA Wrestling State Champions season.

Cleveland Blue Raiders, led by NHSCA National Champion Logan Fowler, have won the TSSAA State Championship the last six years and are looking to break the state's all time record for consecutive State Championships, Bosken said.

“The Lady Raider Wrestling team, led by World Champion Piper Fowler, are also the returning State Champions and are looking to repeat in 2024,” Bosken said. “Media Day is an exciting opportunity to meet our champions and cover their record breaking journey.”

Members of the media will have the chance to interview  talented student-athletes, coaches, and support staff. Hear their stories and insights into what it took to become State, National, and World Champions.

“We believe that this Media Day event provides an excellent platform for highlighting the dedication, hard work, and intensity of our student-athletes,” said Bosken. “Coverage from the media will not only honor their achievements but also inspire and motivate young athletes in our community.”

Cupboards aren't bare for Stone wrestling

WEBIMG_9649.jpg

It has almost become commonplace for Brian Parker, the wrestling coach at Stone Memorial High School, to have to revamp his roster every season. Despite the annual success his program has had, players graduate, and some even decide they want to do something else.

“It is pretty much a rebuilding year every season,” Parker said.

Stone Memorial is coming off a good campaign, where the black and gold qualified six wrestlers for the state 2023 championship. He has a large group of wrestler coming back, but he could use some bigger numbers in the younger ranks.

“Probably the first thing I was thinking about coming into this season was recruiting and getting more kids,” Parker said. “We’ve got to recruit more. We’re pretty young, but we do have some experienced kids, a good core to build around.”

And Parker has been putting his wrestlers through their paces in the preseason. Stone Memorial will scrimmage at Bearden High School on Nov. 18 and then open the year at Hixson on Nov. 21.

“The thing we need to do more work on are our basic moves,” Parker said. “I have learned, especially with the younger kids, I can’t go on to the ‘fantastic’ moves if I don’t make sure they’re good with the basics.

“Everybody should be able to do a switch fast. Everybody should be able to do a standup fast. They should be able to do certain takedowns. I found many of them were hitting moves OK, but I need them to be hitting moves near perfect.”

Parker said he doesn’t want his wrestlers to have to think when they’re on the mat. He said it should all come naturally, and if one move doesn’t work, you move on to the other move.

“On the guys’ team, we’ve got several seniors and a couple of juniors that I think could do well,” Parker said.

“I think Trenton Duncan could make it to the state. Aden Thompson has a very good chance, and Khalli Dishman is back after going to the state last year. Dalton Platz, one of the lightweights, could do well, and Chandler Gavin, you can tell, has put in a lot of work on his own.”

Some of the other guys figuring to battle for playing time are Jonathan Aguirre, Daniel Bell, Bradeck Cole, Teddy Dannel, Daniel Hawn, Fayan Hernandez, Dalton Jewell, Brice Martin, Ryan McCollam, Jack Neal, Isaiah McCulley, Jack Nealy, Joseph Patton, C.J. Redfield, Jonah Reuer, Jude Schapanski, Avery Scoville, Braden Thompson and Aiden Williamson.

Parker said he will learn a lot more about his team within the next few weeks after they actual compete against someone not wearing black and gold.

He said he will learn more about who should be in what weight class, and just how strong his  team’s depth will be.

“Several kids, at least in the initial look, seem like they might be able to help us,” Parker said. “However, wrestling is really hard on a person. I tell the kids all the time wrestling is about imposing your will. And, you can either be the hammer or the nail.”

Anna Scoville and Alina Thompson make up Stone Memorial’s current girls roster.

“Both have AAU experience,” Parker said. “ Scoville is a sophomore and she had a great year last season. Alina has been wrestling a long time and she should do very well.”

Now wrestlers are winding up their summer workouts as they prepare for a busy match schedule.

“There is never enough time to get ready for the season. I know they’re not in shape yet, but by Saturday I really want them to be aggressive and really go after their openings on the mat,” Parker said. “We want to see them tighten up on the basics.”
