Stone & Cumberland coverage up their way…

Stone wrestling splits matches with Hixson, Ooltewah

BBCCHS _ SMHS wrestling-83.jpg
Kirk Daniel Carter

Despite having some illness running up and down his roster, Brian Parker was pretty pleased with what he saw from his recent Stone Memorial High School wrestling season opener.

Stone had little trouble with host Hixson, grabbing a 54-18 victory.

However, the Panthers couldn’t make it 2-0 as they dropped a 42-30 decision to Ooltewah.

“We had a lot of rookies in the lineup due to sickness,” Parker said.

“Freshman Braden Thompson came through with a big pin in the Hixson

match. Johnnathen Aguirre, Trenton Duncan and Aden Thompson had two wins on the night.”

Stone jumped on top of Hixson quickly with Jack Nealy and Bradeck Cole

picking up forfeit wins at the 113-pound and 120-pound weight divisions.

Those wins came between double forfeits at 106 pounds and 126 pounds.

Dalton Platz won his match for the Panthers at 132 pounds, while Dalton

Jewell won by forfeit at 138 pounds. Brice Martin picked up a win at 144

pounds and Aguire beat Hixson’s Herbin Soto in the 150-pound weight class.

Duncan picked up a win at 157 pounds and Aden Thompson beat Hixson’s Mako Mathis at 175 pounds.

Unfortunately, Ryan McCollam lost

his battle with Ian Von Loh at 165 pounds. Theodore Daniel lost his contest at 190

pounds, and Stone’s Jonah Rever lost at 215 pounds.

However, Braden Thompson took down Hixson’s Braden Jenkins in the

heavyweight division, at 285 pounds.

In the second match of the day, Stone picked up big wins in several

different classes for the Panthers but couldn’t knock off Ooltewah for the overall match category.

After a double forfeit at 106 pounds, Nealey and Cole won their matches

at 113 and 120 pounds, respectively. Both wins were by forfeit. There

was a forfeit at 126 pounds and Platz lost his match to Harrison Hindman

at 132 pounds. Stone’s Dalton Jewell dropped his match at 138 pounds to

Ooltewah’s Logan Hindman.

Brice Martin dropped his match to Matthew Conner at 144 pounds and Aguire got his hand raised over Sebastian Lotufo for a win in the 150-pound match.

Duncan came back for a big win at 157 pounds over Daniel Loizeaux.

McCollam fell in his match at 165 pounds.

At 175 pounds, Aden Thompson took down Ooltewah’s Oliver Lia. Theodore

Daniel dropped his match at 190 pounds and Braden Thompson lost his

match at 285 pounds.

Stone’s last win of the day came at 215 pounds when

Rever won by forfeit.

In other action this week, the Cumberland County Jets dropped a 66-18

decision on the road with Warren County.

CCHS got victories from Anthony Godsey at 126 pounds. He beat Matthew

Hicks. Benjamin Hulbert defeated Matthew Starkey for the win at 175

pounds,  while Jacob Nealon, wrestling in the heavyweight division at

285 pounds, beat JR Mares.

Other Jets competing in the meet were Cayden Wallace, Deacon Shockley,

Thomas Kerley, Jacob Voss, Isaiah McMillian, Colton Bennett, Matthew

Patton, James Lawson, Noah Barnaby and James Johnson.

Up next, Stone Memorial will visit Farragut on Dec. 1 before traveling

to Cookeville Dec. 5. Cumberland County will host Rhea County and

Farragut Nov. 30 before traveling to Gibbs on Dec. 7 .

Kudos to Blue Raiders, covered in Knoxville due winning streak…

How Alcoa’s nine straight TSSAA football championships compare to other active Tennessee streaks

Knoxville News Sentinel

 — Eli Owens knows Alcoa is accomplishing something special.

CHATTANOOGA — Eli Owens knows Alcoa is accomplishing something special The Tornadoes padded their state record for consecutive TSSAA football state championships by capturing their ninth in a row, defeating East Nashville 42-20 Friday at Finley Stadium.

“We make sure to live in the moment. It’s fun while it lasts,” said Owens, a four-star junior tight end who caught four passes for 51 yards against the Eagles. “We’re going to enjoy tonight, we’ll enjoy the next weekend and we’ll probably enjoy the next few weeks. But once January hits all I’m worried about is December 2024. All I’m worried about is getting 10.”

The Tornadoes (13-1) have the second-longest active team championship streak in Tennessee among all sports. Hardin County has won 10 straight girls bowling titles.

Summertown girls golf and Cleveland wrestling are tied for the third-longest active streak with six straight. Cleveland has won six consecutive team wrestling championships and dual titles. McCallie boys cross country and Baylor wrestling each have won five in a row.

The longest TSSAA team championship streak in history belongs to Baylor girls golf, which won 16 straight from 1995-2010. With nine titles, Alcoa now has the state's third-longest team title streak all-time.

Alcoa broke its own consecutive TSSAA football championship record with No. 8 last year. The Tornadoes also won seven consecutive titles from 2004-10. Maryville (2004-07) and Brentwood Academy (2015-18) both won four in a row before.

The nation's longest football state championship streak of all-time is 14 belonging to St. Louis (Hawaii) and Washington (South Dakota). Neither streak is active, nor was each title claimed through a traditional playoff system. St. Louis’ titles came in a bowl format pitting the state’s top two teams in one game. Washington’s were mythical titles determined by newspapers and rankings.

Part of Alcoa’s challenge each season is staying motivated to re-climb the mountain in a classification it has dominated. It tries to schedule aggressively against larger schools in the regular season.

“When we hit this field today, the electricity in your veins … If that ever goes away, I’ll quit doing this. It’s too hard. The expectation at Alcoa is you win the whole thing,” second-year Alcoa coach Brian Nix said. “It’s an all-or-nothing thing. I wouldn’t judge the success of our team (based on titles), but definitely our community would, and our kids would feel like they’ve failed if they didn’t win it.”

BUFFALO RESULTS

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.---The Chattanooga Mocs swept MAC opponents today in duals at Gardner-Webb. The Mocs controlled Buffalo 27-12 before blitzing Kent State 38-3.

It was the Kamdyn Munro show claiming all 12 points with a second period fall against the Bulls and a quick first period finish on the Golden Flashes. He wasn't alone.

Brayden Palmer earned bonus points with majors. His six collegiate wins this season have all been by major decision. Blake Boarman (1 TF), Isaiah Powe (2 MD), Noah Castillo (1 MD), David Harper (Fall) and Kaleb Snodgrass (1 MD) also earned bonus points.

The Mocs swept the early weights again this weekend. The squad is 16-0 at 125 through 149 through four duals.

"I'm proud of the way our guys competed," Coach Kyle Ruschell shared. "They went out there and controlled positions. What I was happiest about with today's performance? I saw that our guys are coachable and applying what we work on in practice.."

The Mocs are 3-1. They return to the Maclellan Gym mat on Dec. 16 against Little Rock and Queens. It's the home opener for the program and final tune up for the Southern Scuffle, Jan. 1-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Mocs dominated the lower weights with four wins in as many bouts. Bonus points for Brayden Palmer and Isaiah Powe at 125 and 141 made it a 14-0 start.

Powe and Kaleb Snodgrass (285) got their first dual wins at UTC.

The duals were split for the day with the Rebelettes winning their matchup while the Rebels took an overall loss on the boys side.

The Rebelettes picked up a 24-6 win in the girls portion of the meet with only one actual match being wrestled in the dual.

Juan Hernandez also added a forfeit victory in the 132-pound division, but the rest of the points would be claimed by the hosting Golden Eagles.

The FCHS boys and girls wrestling teams will next compete Tuesday in a home meet against Moore County, Lawrence County and Oakland. The meet is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

Dobyns-Bennett suffered a couple of key losses on its wrestling team, but the cupboard is far from bare.

Max Norman, a two-time state champion, and his younger brother, Titus, transferred to Chattanooga Baylor, a private school, but the Indians still look to be one of the top teams in the state.

Mason Jakob, a state champion at 113 last season, and Garrett Crowder, a state runner-up at 220, lead a Tribe team that also boasts state qualifiers Jake Dempsey, Bryce Pulitzer and Kennedy Watterson.

“We still look pretty good. We are similar to the team we had three, four years ago,” D-B coach Wes Idlette said. “We have a combination of veteran leadership and some talented youth. As we do every year, we have to piece these guys in the right position to maximize us to be successful.”

D-B is coming off a third-place finish in the state duals after avenging an earlier loss to Wilson Central. The Indians also placed fifth in the team standings at the individual championships.

“The yearly expectations for us are to win the region, win the section and make it to the state duals,” Idlette said. “We want to advance and place as high as we could. We did that last year and our kids realized we were one of the best teams in the state. We will see how we do with a target on our backs.”

The Indians romped to wins Tuesday against Morristown East and Morristown West. The lineup for those started with Bryson Church at the 106-pound weight class. Bradyn Davis competed at 113 and Quinn Vetter was at 120. The lighter classes included Derek Winseman at 126, Watterson at 132 and Pulitzer at 138.

Weight classes have changed over the last couple of years with Jon Cantu at 144, Andrew Weaver at 150, Christian Schmidt at 157 and Gavin Crowder at 165.

Jimmy Taylor was dominant in a pair of 175-pound matches. Dempsey has gone all the way from competing at 145 as a sophomore to winning matches at 190, as he did on Tuesday night. Branson Carswell, a standout linebacker on the football team, is showing tremendous talent on the mat at 215. Garrett Crowder has taken over the 285 spot.

D-B also had a strong showing last weekend at the Southern Slam tournament in South Carolina. Jakob was the winner at 120 and Garrett Crowder placed second at heavyweight.

The girls’ team has some standout talent as well. State qualifiers Shanyia Bond and Bailey Whitley, both seniors, lead the way. Bond is at 126 and Whitley competes at 107 and 114. Zoe Jackson at 120 and Isabella Perez at 145 could also make some noise.

D-B will host the Indian Classic this weekend, and teams from Ohio, Kentucky, Alabama, West Virginia and Pennsylvania will be joining local squads in the competition.

Looking ahead to the rest of the season, the Indians don’t have to look far to see tough competition. They finished one spot ahead of rival Science Hill in last year’s state championships.

“We want our region to do well,” Idlette said. “When we look at last year’s state tournament, there were several wrestlers, not just at our school, who did well.

“Hopefully, the balance is starting to shift up our way and the state sees there’s talent up here and not just Chattanooga and Nashville.”

NASHVILLE – One Williamson County high school senior grabbed his third consecutive Johnny Drennan Memorial Wrestling Invitational title, while the other earned his first at the prestigious local tournament hosted at Father Ryan.

Both are ready for the bigger prize: wrestling for a state championship next month. The tournament works well as a precursor of sorts to kick off the New Year against a collection of some of the state’s best wrestlers as well as high-caliber talent from six other states.

“If you’re in the mix here, I think you are challenging for a potential state title,” said reigning National Coach of the Year Pat Simpson of Father Ryan, who is in his 46th season leading the Irish.

Summit High’s Landon Desselle won all five of his matches over the two-day tournament to claim a rare third consecutive Johnny Drennan Memorial championship, taking the 144-pound bracket with an 8-2 decision over Tullahoma’s Caiden Mears on Saturday. He rode the momentum of his tournament win last season at Father Ryan to win a state championship.

“I know I wrestled good enough to win, but I still have things to work on,” said Desselle, a three-time state medalist who has signed with Ohio State. “This is one that I circle on my calendar. I know it’s always going to be a battle and you just have to come out here and try to wrestle your best and believe in yourself.”

Brentwood’s Arash Yazdani was the only other county winner out of five local finalists. Yazdani, who placed fourth last year at the tournament and also finished fourth at state, was relentless all tournament at 138 pounds winning with four technical falls and taking the title with a 13-4 major decision against Collierville’s Damen Pullen.

“He really wanted this one and he went out and got it,” said Brentwood coach Damon Smith, whose team placed fifth in the final standings out of 49 schools. “Arash has that desire to win a state championship and I think he has every ability to make it happen.

“He is completely dedicated to the sport, the training and the lifestyle it takes to be a champion.”

It’s been a roughly five-year journey to the top of the podium for the Bruin senior who recalled practicing against Desselle, a longtime training partner and friend, as an eighth grader.

“Oh man, that was not pretty,” he said smiling. “But you have to train to get better and now we train every day it seems. He gives me advice now and I can give him some.

“There’s this culture that has been built and that’s pretty cool to be a part of.”

It’s the kind of culture Summit coach Pete Miller has been striving to establish for the area since planting roots in WillCo back in 2012 when the Cleveland graduate left the Chattanooga-area hotbed for a position at Spring Station Middle and eventually became head coach for the Spartans.

“You saw it right at the end there, our guys huddled up with the Brentwood guys and everybody’s mixed together,” Miller said. “You have to put your egos aside, work together and realize that on the mat, yeah, it’s a fist fight, but off the mat, we all have the same thing in common and the only difference is the colors of our schools.

“I’m always so excited to see that camaraderie among our local teams, especially at the end of a tough weekend because this is the toughest tournament individually in the state of Tennessee.”

Kentucky’s Union County clinched a second consecutive team title with 272 points with medalists in 10 of 14 weight classes paced by sophomore twin brothers Jordyn and Jayden Raney’s wins at 132 and 126 pounds. McCallie (244.5) was second and the host Irish placed third (229.3), edging South Carolina’s Eastside, which had five finalists.

“You’re not going to get any better going to a tournament where the competition’s not great and you’re not challenged, so that’s what I’ve always liked about our tournament because we seem to have enough high quality competition,” Simpson said. “There’s no easy match here … again, if you can do well in this tournament, then you’ve got a good chance to do well at the state tournament.”

Father Ryan’s Joseph Calvin (120) and Chancery Dean (150) both collected key championships for Father Ryan.

Like the hosts, the Union County twins always drew a crowd every time they wrestled. Jordyn Raney won the U17 Greco-Roman 55kg World Championship in August, while Jayden Raney was a double champion at the Fargo Wrestling National Championships over the summer, winning Greco-Roman and freestyle for a second year in a row.

Summit senior Jarvis Little wrestled Jordyn for the second season in a row in the finals of the Johnny Drennan Memorial. The pair battled to a 9-6 decision last year in the 126-pound finals with Raney claiming the win. Both went on to repeat as state champions.

On Saturday, Raney claimed a 9-3 win over Little in the 132-pound final scoring two quick takedowns in the first period. Neither scored in the second period before Raney sealed the win with two more takedowns in the third.

It was the second weekend in a row that Little settled for runner-up after grappling with a nationally-ranked opponent in the finals. He fell to Marcus Blaze of Perrysburg, Ohio, the top-ranked wrestler in the country at 126 pounds, last weekend at the Brecksville Invitational Holiday Tournament in Ohio.

“Every final he gets into, there’s some kind of special on the other side,” Miller said. “Jarvis has met the competition, and that’s what we want. It makes us better.”

Other runners-up from WillCo included Spencer Kon of Independence at 190 pounds and Taylor Wimsatt of Brentwood Academy at 165, both of whom took fourth at the Johnny Drennan Memorial last year.

Kon pinned his first three opponents and kno

cked out Brentwood Academy’s Brody Belville 6-3 in the semis before suffering a 1-0 defeat against Lakeway Christian’s Jay Eversole in the finals. Independence teammates Riddeck Romano (144) and Locke Sessions (106) both added fifth-place finishes for the Eagles.

Wimsatt battled into the finals with three decisions and one major before falling to Wisconsin’s Isaiah Guerrero 6-5 in the championship. Guerrero was credited with a takedown with 51 seconds left in the third period and hung on for the win.

Summit finished seventh in the team standings. Spartan heavyweight Peters Savarino battled back from a tough ultimate tie-breaker setback in the semifinals against McGavock’s Elijah Sumner to take third with a 5-1 decision against Brentwood big-man Jackson Ard, a definite precursor to future district and region battles between the pair.

“He’s our what 5-foot-6 heavyweight, but he takes it all and did really well,” Miller said of Savarino. “Definitely proud of that guy.”

Zachery Little, who was guzzling water to make weight at 157, added a sixth-place showing while the Spartans were also boosted by the return of Jackson Bourdon at 126. Bourdon narrowly missed a podium finish, but went 3-2 over the two days.

Blaise Masi of Summit was the other Spartan medalist and placed eighth after falling to Reed Loeffel of Brentwood in one of three all-WillCo consolation matches.

Besides Savarino’s win over Ard and Loeffel’s victory against Masi, Brentwood Academy’s Bo Dominguez edged Ravenwood’s Maddox Eskew 10-9 in the 120-pound third-place match.
