Shelby-Metro prep football preview: Week 1

By John Varlas of The Commercial Appeal

It doesn't say so on your calendar but when it comes to high school football in Shelby County, 2016 is the year of the running back.

The Memphis area is home to a bumper crop of seniors, three of whom rushed for over 2,000 yards last season. Those would be Arkansas commit Chase Hayden of St. George's (2,511, 31 touchdowns); Clemson-bound Cordarrian Richardson of Trezevant (2,239, 18) and Whitehaven's Kylan Watkins (2,211, 21).

Marquavious Moore of Harding was almost there (1,872, 20). Add it up and comes out to nearly 9,000 yards and 90 touchdowns. And the teams those guys played for? They won 13, 12, 12 and 10 games respectively, with state titles for St. George's and Trezevant.

The lesson here? You can never go wrong with a workhorse in the backfield.

GAMES OF THE WEEK

(all games at 7 p.m. unless noted)

(10) East (12-2 in 2015) at (2) Cordova (8-3)

The lowdown: Mustangs running back Tim Taylor goes against a strong defense led by tackle Braylon Brown. Both have committed to the University of Memphis: Will there be a Mike Norvell sighting?

(9) White Station (9-4) at (3) CBHS (9-3)

The lowdown: White Station's playmakers go against CBHS' beef and brawn. This one could come down to who wins the quarterback battle between John Lyons and the now-healthy Keegan Voss.

DANDY DOZEN GAMES

Mitchell (6-4) at (1) Whitehaven (12-2) Sat. in the Whitehaven Classic, 8 p.m.

The lowdown: Wide receiver DeAndre Bobo will make plays for Mitchell, which will be back in the 2A playoffs after two years in the TSSAA doghouse. And this one is always a battle. But it will take something special for Mitchell to win.

KIPP Academy (7-3) vs. (4) Trezevant (12-3) at Crump Sat. in the North Memphis Classic, 8 p.m

The lowdown: KIPP quarterback Dewayne Betts (Kansas State) is one of the best small-school talents in the state and will be a great test for Trezevant's defense, led by Purdue commitment Tijuan Mason.

(5) Ridgeway (6-5) at Houston (1-10)

The lowdown: Roadrunners QB Tyrique Sandusky says "Running Back U" will fling it around this year. And will have four new starters in the secondary, meaning the Mustangs will have to really work for their first victory on their turf field.

(6) MUS (7-4) vs. Central (7-4) at Crump

The lowdown: Two of the nation's best sophomore's on display in Owls' DB-WR Maurice Hampton (LSU) and Warriors' DL Trevis Hopper. MUS won 38-0 last year but this one could well be much closer.

(7) Lausanne (8-4) at Germantown (5-6)

The lowdown: Now-graduated Rodney Williams returned the opening kickoff for a score last year. But it was downhill after as Lausanne won 42-7. Red Devils need to put together some consistent scoring drives and keep the Lynx skill guys off the field.

Munford (8-3) at (8) Covington (9-3), 7:30 p.m.

The lowdown: Under-the-radar game of the week. Nick Markle makes his debut as Munford coach against one of the best running backs in the area in T.J. Smith. Cougars won 17-14 in 2015.

Wooddale (2-8) at (11) Harding (10-3)

The lowdown: Record-setting quarterback Jerry Craine returns to Wooddale but most of his weapons have moved on. Lions have speed, size and experience and this will be a good chance for new QB Ty Kimberlin to get his feet wet.

(12) St. George's (13-1) at Jackson Trinity Christian (8-6)

The lowdown: TCS advanced to the 2A semis last year — losing to Trezevant — but is in rebuilding mode. The Gryphons' hopes hinge on how quickly their o-line comes together.

It was nice being on time for an early season game. Whitehaven's Defense looked good. They scored a TD. Whitehaven's offense looked good, in spots. The special teams, more specifically the kicking game , even more specifically, the THE KICKOFF Specialist, will cost Whitehaven against a comparable team such as Cordova, Ridgeway, Arlington, White Station, etc. unless one of two things happen: The kid that's doing it vastly improves in ONE Week or we actually let an actual athlete kick the ball. My opinion is to kick it out of bounds or on the ground if there isn't anyone that can kick better than the kid that currently does it, Geezus Kite.

We breaking in new kickers bruh...which is something you should know that real kickers don't come da haven we have to train them. ..he will be fine..the one good kick ret they had was only because they made miller sit out because he mouthed off to the ref aND he ran rite where he normally would be..kick coverage will be fine..it's not like they did anything special...playing against speed is always a gamble I don't care who you are. We pitched a shutout, and I couldn't be more proud for the first game...

    • Never in my life have I seen a team in a scrimmage against their own defense look so lost and confused. The defense didn’t look much better, the coaching staff can’t keep their anger together, not only with the players but also with their other coaches. I feel awful for those players. None of them look like they wanted or should’ve been out there, but for the grown men on the sidelines acting like fools, it's just embarrassing to the Farragut name and reputation. I now see why they chose not to live stream this on their YouTube channel.
    • We could sure use some math teachers country wide. Ever go into a store or restaurant and the bill comes to $9.97 and you give them a ten dollar bill and 2 pennies because you wanted a nickle back and then the meltdown starts and the next thing two more people have to come and help figure it out and the place comes to a complete halt. I see this everyday and it's a sad representation of all these schools allowing these kids out the door to get shortchanged the rest of their life.
    • I like the Pirates chances. I’ll be there as soon as work allows.
    • Stars, I heard we were searching far and wide for some math teachers. Any chance their kids bench press or 40 times are getting checked? LOL I’ve heard good things from 825.
    • I think it was expected. “Bad” luck I guess to get a couple difference maker QBs in the same class. I thought the decision was made a little early myself, but they were struggling offensively last year.  I assume the running quarterback alco had last year would be a senior this fall, and the transfer would start the following two years in addition to getting a ton of playing time this year. Maybe he waits two yrs, but I doubt it. The kid is good. So is the one who stayed.
