Cleveland has a good team for sure and it will be a game. if Cleveland go's down 14 points before the half it is over. Maryville is for sure the most physical team in 4A and is two deep every position. It also does not matter which Off player gets the ball everyone of those guys can make plays. The D of Maryville is the most un-talked about force on the team. The do not allow the big paly often and only at one conner this year. The D line and LB's will be ready for any back in the state. Good luck to Cleveland but Maryville is not central who only scored because of turnovers. Case in point Cent get the ball on turnovers five times but could still not beat the rebs. The kids will be ready to play and the weather is fooing to be great. See you there. MHS 38 CHS 17.

I'll save my prediction until later in the week (like anyone cares  ), but I do have one comment now. To me, it makes no sense that Maryville is having to go on the road to play this game. 2 straight state titles, 23 wins in a row, the number one team in the state all year ... and they have to go on the road to play a team with 3 losses? Taking nothing away from Cleveland, they've earned the right to be where they are, but something is screwed up in the system when the Rebels have to play on the road two years in a row when some teams (Morr West) get to play almost every playoff game at home. I know, I know... that's just the way the brackets fell this year, and everyone gets their turn, blah, blah, blah... but it still seems a little weird.

I have a feeling that the wet field might have killed Central's quickness, but that's just my opinion. Either way, Cleveland is a good team and definitely shouldn't be overlooked, I agree. And they've got recent tradition on their side as well --- they won three state championships back-to-back-to-back in the early 90's, just before Pearl-Cohn and Maryville came on the scene. Cleveland's also routed Maryville twice back in '92 and '93.

So. The question I have is if this year, Cleveland is as well-balanced as Maryville in everything --- especially defensively. Because I guarantee you, Maryville will find all the Raiders' weaknesses and take advantage of them. Our coaches are some of the best in the state at doing that and I think you would have difficulty finding anybody in our classification who would disagree with that.

As for Cleveland's offense, even if they have more than one player doing well for them, by halftime Maryville's defense will have all the answers as to how to shut 'em all down. They've been doing it to teams for as long as I've been here. So it will have to be Cleveland's defense that gives them a chance to win this one. If they can manage to keep it close --- which I seriously doubt --- and take it to the last series of the fourth quarter, then... we'll see!

So... can Michael Dietrich escape from the vicious grasp of Drew Galyon? Can Tim Cooper breeze past the tenacious defense of Merritt, Holt, Galyon, and Clement? Can Levonte Barber get past the mighty Cole McKinney? Only time will tell... but I think it'll be Maryville 31, Cleveland 14! ;) See y'all there on Friday.

hmm...I also find that comment very stupid. You're not playing some ragdoll Chatt. team! This is the big time, this is Maryville. The seniors are still upset because Cleveland ruined their perfect season when they were in 8th grade and they still want revenge as many times as they can get it! Maryville beats teams that are better than they are just by wearing them down, through sheer numbers. Hillsboro may have beaten Maryville last year were it not for good coaching and more well coached players. Hillsboro simply ran outta steam. Maryville has close to 100 players on their sideline and everyone of those players has at least one game of experience under their belt. Levonte Barber has not faced a defensive end that runs a 4.4 forty, or 2 DT's that a pushing 300 lbs. These boys have played against Gerald Riggs and Derrick Milligan, holding both of them to well under average, why would Barber be any different? The main thing is the pass, Maryville cannot sit on the run, but we have the capability to adjust and have plenty of good players on scout team that will be able to simulate the offense of Cleveland. Our offense has been unstoppable, and until I see someone stop our total offense then I won't believe that it can happen. I think Maryville might have too many weapons for Cleveland, but I am not underestimating Cleveland. One thing you wont see is Maryville getting tired, it never happens, never has, never will!

Maryville conditions too hard to get worn down. Running outside is a no beacuse Galyon and hodge will not allow it. The linebackers will be there all night too. You will not be able to go up the middle cause Cole will swallow you. Passing...that may not an option because Maryville is talented enough, but if not Carl Stewart my be put a safety for this one. Anyway you all keep getting on here talking about Maryville like we are a new team or that this 23 game streak is nothing and we won all of our titles in the 70s, we did, but then we kinda won 3 more in recent years couple years. All of you whose teams were knocked out of the playoffs and you are cheering for Cleveland, you are a hater, if you are a Cleveland fan...you have two losses and are not a great as Maryville.

    • OK, well, that’s because two quarterbacks can’t start. That’s football 101. The main quarterback won the starting job, so he was on varsity, and the Seymour transfer did not win the starting job. He played some varsity. He was mainly junior varsity, and he balled out when healthy, so for the starting quarterback who’s been starting varsity since his freshman year, if you have any form of proof that he’s gotten worse, somehow, whether that means stats or whatnot, please feel free to share.
    • They’ve both gotten worse. I’ve seen enough games to know that.
    • The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.
    • I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.
    • An FYI: To see how an opponent has done against another opponent since 2001- go to the game by clicking on one of the teams. Click the G beside the game. For example, Milan: The info will show you the previous matchups and other info.
