2016-17 COACHES REQUIREMENTS

Article I, Section 9 of the TSSAA Bylaws states the following:

COACHING REQUIREMENTS CHECKLIST

Classified Employees and Non-Faculty Coaches serving as Head Coaches (Football, Basketball, Baseball,

Softball, Track)

_____ Must be approved by principal, director of schools, and/or school board each year.

_____ Must be submitted by the principal to TSSAA each year.

_____ May not serve as a head coach until the individual has five or more years of experience as an assistant

coach at a TSSAA/TMSAA school.

_____ Must successfully complete the NFHS “Fundamentals of Coaching†and “First Aid, Health, & Safety for

Coaches†courses prior to coaching.*

My question is when was the "may not serve as head coach until the individual has 5 or more years experience an assistant" rescinded?

That rule is rarely actually enforced by the TSSAA.  If it is, they'll just pay the $500 fine and move on.  The only time you ever see it matter is if a teacher files a union grievance over qualified teachers being excluded from the job and those rarely go anywhere.

They are making a special "Work Readiness Specialist" position for Sensabaugh to get him in the building.

There are literally no job duties or certifications associated with this position, so your guess on what he's actually supposed to be doing as good as mine.

To me, it looks like he'll get paid $10 an hour just to hang out around during school hours.

I wish him the best, but my prediction is that he gets a rude awakening on what it means to be a HS coach at a rural county school and will be gone within 3 years.  It wouldn't surprise me to see him resign after a year.

I can't think of one former NFL player who has been a good HS head coach.

You might want to get out of the prediction business lol! Google former NFL players who are now HS head coaches. Although many don't do well there are plenty that do. Just like non NFL players that become HS head coaches. Some make it and some don't.  I think Sensabaugh will make a good, maybe great head coach. That's not a prediction. That's just what I think is about to happen. He's probably already as good as any other head coach this side of Greeneville and he hasn't even coached his first game yet.

    • RR, you might remember. Didn’t someone hide the kicking shoe that game? It seems I remember we had missed a kick the week before, and we needed all the points we could get. We thought we had a better chance going for two, so $?&@$ hid the shoe after the first miss that game. No one on our sideline looked for it very hard.
    • I will never forget the 1983 Heritage vs Maryville game. I remember driving home and listening to WGAP. Can't remember the announcers name. He asked Coach Story why he kept going for 2? Story told him " Why didn't you ask Renfro that last year"
    • TSSAA will let them all go to Mase.
    • Well nothing new, the Mustangs are really talented again this coming season!  They very well could go undefeated in regular season.  We shall see what happens in postseason.  I think the path to state title game is a little clearer than years past.  I think the Stangs are going to be really good and I think the traditional teams around in 2A are not going to be as strong.  It should be a fun season!
