STATE NEEDS TO CHANGE

So, going through looking at the AAA region brackets, and wow they are sad. Regions 1,2, and 3 average 8-9 kids a team, and region 4 isn't much better. So, for a region of only 8-10 teams that means some weight classes are just sending the 4 guys that were weighed in for that weight class, and maybe 1-2 are staying home. The term "state qualifier" has no more weight behind it.

IDEAS:

What if there are three post-season individual tournaments just like duals? Label this weekend coming up region as it is, send the top 4 on to the following weekend to "sub-state" and then send top 4 to the state tournament. There will be 8 regions (same teams as current regions) then combine 1 and 2, 3 and 4, 5 and 6, and 7 and 8. Making 4 sub-states, then the top 4 finishers go to state making it a 16 man bracket at state. The need for a 32 man bracket is a joke. It was fine before the A-AA AAA split. Normally there are 16 kids that shouldn't be in the AAA state tournament per weight class. Make it so the sub state teams split the cost to cover the 6ish refs needed for the tournament (sub state can be ran on 3 mats easily). Do this by making each wrestler pay $10. $10*8*14=$1120 (8 man bracket and 14 weight classes) and refs will cost about $180 (I think)*6=$1080. If a team only has 1 wrestler make it that team will pay $10, if two then team pays $20. The extra $40 can help the hosting team pay for extra cost of janitors or anything else. Hosting teams will get gate and concessions; rotate between schools alphabetically every year to determine hosting team. Lastly, I know this will cause post season to begin a week early because I am thinking we can't push it back a week due to a D2 event.

Thats a lot info, but something needs to happen! It will be a big change, but something needs to happen before the TSSAA wrestling falls all apart!

Another option I heard someone discussing was to weigh the qualifiers differently. If one region is nearly full up with 16 man brackets, maybe start taking the top 5 or 6. Regions that consistently have 4 or 5 in their brackets, maybe start taking only the top 2 or 3. Even them out so there's still 32 qualifiers throughout the state. But that may cause some logistics headaches and might not be able to stay the same from year to year. So scratch that.

Don't think you can send an extra kid to state because that region has more kids in a certain weight class. Every year there are certain weight classes that won't fill a full bracket, for example heavy weights, usually have least amount of competition and fewer participants. Also, don't think you could score team points fairly if your sending more kids from certain regions. I agree with you though, it would be nice to have full brackets across the board.

That sounds perfect, but agreed it  would be logistical nightmare year to year.

I mean there are 94 teams in AAA across the state, and geographically they may be split evenly between the state, but not by numbers. 8 teams in region 4, but 17 in region 7?? At the min. split the regions evenly. With the current 93 teams (93 next year due to Knoxville Catholic High school dropping to D2) that would mean 5 regions would have 12 and 3 would have 11. It wouldn't be that hard to split up differently for individuals. If split evenly and then also paying attention to geographic location second the regions would look like (underlined schools would be added teams or moved teams.

Breaking it up like this and then adding in a sub state, talk about some good match ups. State has lost its lust. Kids say oh yea I made it to state no big deal. Let's make state something that has to be worked for to obtain. Making it to state is like putting you passed kindergarten on your resume. Just think, when AAA and A/AA were combined there were 149ish team in the running for the state tournament across the state. Basically 1 in every 5 kids made it. So, then take out the 55 A/AA teams, now you are at 94 teams/kids, competing for the same 32 spots. Now, 1 in every 3 kids are now competing for that spot. There is your water down. I am not saying combine the divisions again because I think different divisions is what will grow the sport. However, adding in sub state, and making it a 16 man bracket at state will make it so 1 in every 6 kids make it to state. Same amount of "trophies" given, but now it will make the wrestlers fight for something. I can guarantee the consolation-semi matches at sub state will be something great matches!

How would we get the change though? Petition to TSSAA? Get someone who works for TSSAA on our side? All this sounds great. The regions do need to be redone, there does need to be an extra step whether it be sub state or a district tournament to qualify for regions. There does need to be a change to 16 man brackets, and we need proper seeding.  But how? What needs to be done to make this happen?

Good luck with that. Just saying it would probably take yrs to get TSSAA just to consider it.

It would take a lot. And we have been taking about making change for years, from this, to the medals, to the venue...but nobody ever does anything about it

Whoever didn't see this coming when they divided the state into 3 different divisions is delusional. But remember "when you build it they will come. What we need to do is let everyone medal and that will make TN wrestling grow".

rearranging regions doesn't solve the problem. The problem is they've tried to fix something that was never broken to begin with. Now it's broken.

You have a better chance of getting pigs to build their own plane to fly, and flying it. Before you get TSSAA to combine all divisions again. So, save your breathe, that's not happening, move on. We as coaches have to find a way to fix this without combining divisions.  Also, having 18 kids medal per weight class out of 200+ possible kids isn't giving everyone a medal. It is a hard road to get one, trust me, I have personal experience.

I agree with you. I know my comment isn't productive but it's just my opinion (and of course it's right). This is a perfect example of screwing something up that should've been left alone. Instead, a few people whined and cried and changes were made to appease the few. It's simply a reflection of our society. It's magnified within the bureaucracy of Public Education. One kid is confused so let them use any restroom they want. One kid can't keep up so slow everyone else down so no child is left behind.

Don't get me wrong, the state tournament will always be exciting. It's wrestling and it's the best competition. Forgive my rant, but it's very frustrating to witness the state tournament implode compared to what it used to be. Especially when I saw this coming for 1000 miles away.

forgive me for not having a solution other than "I told you so"

    • That’s a good line. Wins would be Soddy, Howard, and Ooltewah. Maybe East Ham again or Knox Central. Tyner maybe but being that late in the year it’s hard to say. I don’t think we get by Red Bank this year.    Rhea could be anywhere from 2-8 to 6-4.
    • I agree with the Farragut and Bradley claim. Those will both be wins. Bearden like you say is depending on when you get them in comparison to when the wheels fall off.  As far as West goes I’m 50-50. They have been able to reload so far so until they show me they haven’t I can’t count them out.
    • during the 2nd round of the playoffs last year against Milan, Gray partially tore his meniscus. He had a minor repair around Thanksgiving. Recovery time was minimal and he has been full force for baseball this season.
    • What do ya’ll think the O/U will be? I would set the line at 2.5
    • Playing high school sports is a privilege not a right.  The college did not have to rescind the scholarship.  Scholarship offers are pulled all the time for a number of reasons. That was 100% their choice.  A coach can keep, cut, or dismiss any player that they want to without reason anytime they want.  Is that the right way to run a program?? I don't think that it is, but these are the facts of the matter. This case has absolutely 0% chance of going in the plaintiff's favor. Futhermore, I'd imagine that these administrators and the coach are a part of some teaching or coaching organization that will cover at least 1 million dollars each in legal fees. Obviously the kid and her family feel like there were "damages" thus the lawsuit.  Unfortunately, the law is not on their side in this case.
