Powell at West : Who you got?

So Powell's playoff chances are slim, but they have a way in, for those who've asked. Obviously, they'd have to stun Oak Ridge in 2 weeks to get to two region wins, and as you'll read, they'd need to beat South Doyle to get that 3rd overall win. If they pull that feat off, here's how it would have to play out (in region play):

  • Fulton and Oak Ridge have already clinched, so we'll ignore them.
  • Karns and Clinton have one region win (Powell*). Clinton still has region games against OR, CC, and Karns, while Karns only has Clinton. If Clinton loses to OR and CC, the Karns/Clinton loser is eliminated. The winner will finish 2-4 (with a "win" over Powell). Seems reasonable.
  • Campbell County and West have 2 wins (CC beat Karns and Powell*, West beat Clinton and Karns). CC still has Fulton, Clinton, and West, while West has Fulton and CC. If CC beats Clinton, they should clinch a playoff spot with 3 region wins. That leaves one spot for either Powell or West.
  • That West/CC game would be the key game, since West needs to beat either Fulton or CC to get to 3 region wins. If they lose both, West finishes 2-4, which would tie them with both Powell and the Karns/Clinton winner.
  • West, Powell, and Karns/Clinton would have the same head-to-head record (1-1).
  • This is where things get really muddy. I believe the next tie-breaker is overall wins. In this scenario, if Powell wins out, all three teams would be 3-7 overall. Karns would actually clinch in this scenario, if they beat Clinton and Seymour, as they would have 4 wins.
  • The team who has played the greatest number of opponents who won 50 percent or more of their games is the next tie-breaker. In this scenario, West has 5 (possibly 7), Powell has 5 (possibly 6), Clinton has 5, and Karns has 4 (possibly 5). If Hardin Valley can find a 5th win (Bearden, Farragut, DB), that would clinch the final spot for West. (Powell and West both played Halls, who is trying to get to 5 wins). But if not...
  • The team who has the greatest number of wins over teams who have won 50 percent or more of their games is the next tie-breaker. In this scenario, West would have none (possibly 1 - Halls), Powell would have 2, and Karns/Clinton would have none. Powell would clinch the final spot if we get to this scenario.

Of course, this all assumes that Powell stuns OR and South Doyle. So I probably wasted my time researching this...

True, but it sure helped having Cottrell and Seth Marshall back then. ;)

West is apparent not using their IB program to bring in many recruits. Cottrell , zoned for Gibbs and Marshal, zoned for Bearden, were good recruits. Who knows how many others Cummings recruited is an not know. The recruiting in Bradley Co. is not going well for Cummings. He might be headed back to his beloved Marble City IB program. By the way if you enter West from another zone under IB program, you do not have to stay in the IB program and very few students graduate with an IB diploma.

    • They’ve both gotten worse. I’ve seen enough games to know that.
    • The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.
    • I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.
    • An FYI: To see how an opponent has done against another opponent since 2001- go to the game by clicking on one of the teams. Click the G beside the game. For example, Milan: The info will show you the previous matchups and other info.
    • All these college signees went yo other schools for 3 years, were getting college offers then transferred to Bearden. It’s not like this staff did much to develop them.    The BBall coaches son and the Seymour transfer were some of the most talented QBs in the region, and you guys developed them into QBs who might complete one pass a game.
