South Greene Region #1 AA Champs

It took two great performances by seniors Braelyn Wykle and T.K. Franklin to beat a very good Grainger County team. Wykle shot 8 for 10 from the field and 13 of 14 from the foul line. Franklin scored 14 points, but her 12 rebounds are really what kept the taller Grainger team at bay. SG shot 56% as a team.

A very good game that was closer than the final score of 67-55 indicates.

Gatlinburg-Pittman plays SG in the Sectional game. Teams who have gone this far in the tournament are always a challenge. SG will not take Pittman lightly.

Grainger goes on to play Northview Academy. Grainger will be tough to beat.

I saw that score.   That was a big win for SG.   I wouldn't want to be Grainger County travelling to Northview.   Like I said earlier in the year.  That Northview team is legit.   I have seen several middle TN teams play including Macon County/Upperman/Dekalb and I think they may be the best AA team I have seen play this year.   There are some really good sectionals going on.   The Meigs vs Macon is a game I thought we would see in Murfreesboro.

Good luck In the tourney!  AA is stacked this year.  I want to take off all week and watch every game!

It looks to be a competitive tournament, for sure. I wish I could go, but the drive is very long. I'll be content to listen on the radio. March 10, I will meet my son in Cookeville to pick up my two grand sons for some spring break fishing here in Greene. Have to house clean and get the fishing gear ready for that this coming week.

A little background on South Greene girls basketball for interested readers: The three senior starters were major players as freshmen in 2016, when SG won the first of two consecutive Class A titles. That first year, there were no seniors and only one junior on the team. Experience will be a strong suit for this year's team.

Two of the girls missed the early part of last season because of ACL injuries. From what I have seen, they are now fully recovered and playing their best ball.

They have had the same coach for the past several years. This year he has started different combinations of players and he seems to have settled on two freshmen who will start. The tournament is sure to be grueling for all teams—especially if teams are not playing a lot of players.

South Greene HS was established in 1965. This will be their 30th trip to the state tournament.

Good luck to every player on every team!

Oh I am very familiar with South Greene.  Especially in the early 90’s.  They were back to back AA  state champs and had a team that went undefeated like 37-0.   That team was stacked.  I remember thinking that year that South Grene would have beaten Shelbyville which were the AAA champs.   Anyway good luck.

There were some fabulous players back in the early 90s.  They were the "second wave" of state championship players. Jody Reaves, Jennifer Davis,  Jeannette Davis and Susan Starnes were tough and tall. If I recall correctly, they all started as freshman. I apologize to all of the other great players I have failed to mention.

The Davis twins now teach and coach at the grammar school level. One has a daughter who is in 8th grade and will be playing for South Greene next year.

If you were to go to a home game at South Greene, you'd likely run into several former SG men and women athletes who teach there. They'll work the concession stand when they are needed. Several former players have sons and daughters currently playing for South Greene. It is a wonderful tradition that will continue way past the events, win or lose, of the coming week.

Good luck to you and enjoy yourself!

Tough game for our South Greene girls. Congratulations to Westview.

Agree. S. Greene had an off game shooting the 3 ball. Being familiar with WV's program, they're a stingy group on defense and shot free throws better today than they have the last few games up there.

I listened to the game on the radio, but can say that Westview had to have been the best defense SG faced this year. It was a fun year and the team should be fun to watch next year.

Westview looks like a different team from Christmas. They played well today. South Green couldn't hit the three but played well answering several Westview runs.

    • Deja vu all over again, 7 yrs apart. SMDH Does anybody talk to each other?
    • OK, well, that’s because two quarterbacks can’t start. That’s football 101. The main quarterback won the starting job, so he was on varsity, and the Seymour transfer did not win the starting job. He played some varsity. He was mainly junior varsity, and he balled out when healthy, so for the starting quarterback who’s been starting varsity since his freshman year, if you have any form of proof that he’s gotten worse, somehow, whether that means stats or whatnot, please feel free to share.
    • They’ve both gotten worse. I’ve seen enough games to know that.
    • The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.
    • I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.
