TSSAA released the 2021-2023(2024?) classifications this afternoon. Currently the A-AA has 49 schools and AAA has 92 schools. The new proposed split is 75 A-AA and 75 AAA. This has bumped the enrollment cutoff to 1,233. Several top tier AAA teams will now find themselves scrapping with the A-AA darlings (Pigeon Forge and Greenville) for the state title. Interesting development.

I'm not sure "several" is the right word here, the only teams I see that have are considered top tier are halls tennessee high and you could possibly throw page in there.

@dontstopbelieving you're right maybe "several" is a little bit of an overstatement, but there are a few teams that could make some noise at A-AA. There are 5 teams that finished in the top 25 at AAA traditional state in 2020.

1. Knox Halls (13th)

2. Soddy-Daisy (19th)

3. East Hamilton (21st)

4. Page (22nd)

5. Munford (25th)

Knox Halls is the only team moving from AAA to A-AA that qualified for team state in 2020. There were also 7 state placers from the AAA schools in 2020 that are moving to A-AA.

0 - State Champs

3 - 2nd place

2 - 3rd place

0 - 4th place

1 - 5th place

1 - 6th place

Soddy will be glad to be getting out of the Bradley County region.  They were a very good team many years but were the third wheel in that region and didn't get to go to state.

Knoxville area wrestling just got a lot more interesting with Halls dropping down to A-AA.

This is true, hopefully if they keep the current state team duals format they will have Halls in a separate region from pigeon forge. It would stink to only see one of Halls, Pigeon Forge, and Gibbs go to state team duals while Alcoa gets to cake walk in and go 2 and out.

    • No reasonable lawyer would take up this case. I am not a lawyer, but I know school law in and out.  Similar situations just like this play out thousands of times each year across the country, even at the college level (i.e. Ole Miss)  The Plaintiff's never win...ever.  If I am wrong, please provide a legal precedent for me. I will be waiting.  https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/39431892/judge-drops-ole-miss-player-lawsuit-lane-kiffin
    • Yes Justin Cruse was named head coach
    • It used to be, I think it still is, a change of 20% +/- gives reason to reclassify. Schools can choose to play up classifications but not down. Here is the mid cycle reclassification info on TSSAA.org When Memphis East changed from a regular public school to an "all-optional" school in 2017 the would've dropped to A but chose to stay in AAA in basketball (baseball, and softball) Penny was still coaching there and with the players they had they would've beaten A teams by 40 and slept walked to the championship. Other Memphis schools stayed in their classifications (mostly in basketball) until the next reclassification cycle. Of course this is the same time that a 4th class was added basketball.
