Germantown (4-1, 2-0 Region 8-6A) at Houston (3-2, 1-1): The only two high schools in the city of Germantown meet in a big rivalry game — one that also will have a big impact on the region race.

Germantown played well last week in a 28-0 victory over Bartlett, particularly on defense. Kion Threalkill and Kody Jones returned interceptions for touchdowns, and the Panthers could manage only 178 yards.

Thanks in large part to some injuries at key positions, Houston struggled to move the ball in last week’s 24-10 loss to Whitehaven. It was the fewest points the Mustangs have scored since a 42-10 loss to Germantown in the first round of the 2017 playoffs.

Whitehaven (3-2, 1-1 Region 8-6A) at Collierville (5-0, 2-0): After consecutive losses to Germantown and Brentwood Academy, the Tigers picked themselves off the canvas with a gutty victory over Houston that kept them from starting 0-2 in the region. Now they will face a red-hot Collierville team that is full of confidence after last week’s 45-7 win over Cordova and its first 5-0 start in 23 seasons.

Collierville has allowed seven points or fewer in each game this season, and Whitehaven’s offense, led by quarterback William Carver, will have to find a way to put points on the board. By contrast, this will be Collierville’s toughest game to date — by far — and it will be interesting to see if the players, who have been excellent all season, can rise to the occasion against one of the state’s premier programs.
