OS Loses to Refs...I mean AC

Sorry but I am so sick of the poor officiating. OS played well but one ref was determined that AC would win, and he made sure of it. The fouls in this game were definitely not equally called for both sides. All OS starters had 4 fouls at the end of the game with one player (Peterson..btw, Peterson almost never fouls..he makes it a point not to and only 2 of the fouls tonight were legit) fouling out in the middle of the 4th.

OS was ahead by 8 with 3 minutes to go. I was told that all but 6 of AC's 2nd quarter points were via the foul line. In other words they only scored 3 baskets from the floor without the freebies. The winning point came with a foul called on an OS player with 1.7 seconds left - OS was still ahead by one point at the time. I'm not taking anything away from AC. My beef is the lack of accountability with the officials. Until there is accountability refs will continue their power plays. Also, it was only one ref who was guilty, but one is all it takes.

OS played well and didn't deserve to lose because of a partial ref. I just wish that somebody (TSSAA???) would try to control this. Slaps on the wrists just aren't enough. They need to get tough with the rogue refs.

You think the refs cost OS the game. I am from Oliver Springs and now teach and coach future Mavs at Norris. From my view point, I wanted to see both teams play well. As I sat around many coaches with lots of years, wisdom, and knowledge--Ronnie Hackworth, Sam Bilyeu, and Alan Reed--the refs costing OS the game never came to the forefront of the discussion my friends. I could list several things that did, but none of the least which was the officials.

Remember, AC had a very good player in Dennis Rash foul out with 1:01 left to play in the 3rd. You say OS had five players with at least 4 fouls. Well..AC had at least 4 with 3 fouls--3 with 4 fouls and one gone by the 4th. SO....I mean the points from the line was pretty even in that AC scored 23 while OS scored 17--not a great disparity.

Please answer me one Q: Why is your big man some 30-35ft from the basket committing a "silly" foul for his 4th?? You can look at it both ways!

Here is the total breakdown by period of play:

OS 13 11 11 14 49

AC 07 17 06 20 50

For Anderson County, Chaniott tossed in 26pts and Wally Lowery came to life in the 4th to finish with 9pts. For the Cats, Ringley was good for 14pts, Peterson hit for 13pts, and Nation tossed in 12pts.

Oh yea--in the 2nd period you mention where AC scored 17pts they hit 2 treys, 2 deuces, and 7 charity tosses while OS hit 3 deuces and 5 charity tosses for a total of 11pts.

That 8pt lead OS had at 42-34 evaporated on 2 FTs on a "legitmate" reaching foul 30-35 feet from the bucket, on a steal and 8ftr, on two charity tosses from a putback try--how about boxing out, two more FTs after OS missed a 1&1 and fouled in frustration. Over the final 1:50, AC was 4-4 from the line while OS was 3-4 from the line. Hit all 4 and guess what, you have OT.

Anything else you'd like to know?? I can give you several reasons why OS may have lost other than the refs or why AC may have won or why it was a good game. PLEASE don't take anything away from an excellent contest by blaming it on a ref--easy copout!! To me, each team played their butts off and left it all between the lines. Let's leave it at that. ;)

Answer,

I don't mean to take anything away from AC AT ALL. I think they are a good team and very well coached. They are all quick and super good shooters, plus they seem like good kids.

My whole point could be summed up with what you said about the big man committing the foul 25 feet away from the basket. They called 2 of those and IMO they WEREN'T fouls. I feel that the refs in this area are not very good and THAT was my point. Again, I'm NOT trying to take anything away from AC. I have just had it with poor officiating. I don't know how to get my point across very well in a post I guess, but mainly I think that having good officials should be a given and that's not happening. Sorry I made you mad because who we played was irrelevant to me. It could have been any team. I just want to see fair games. And I don't think it's a cop-out to state that some games are decided by refs. Around here that's a truism.

Great game by both teams. It was extremely physical and the refs could have dominated the game even more. Everyone knew after the first play it was going to be rough which was definitely to OS's advantage. OS losing Peterson was a huge loss, but losing Rash in the 3rd quarter to suspect fouls also hurt AC. One big difference in the game was that AC has been in and won a lot of close games this season. OS didn't miss many FT's(17/20), but Lamb's miss late in the game opened the backdoor for the Mavs to sneak in. OS played well enough to win this game, but AC never quit. It was the same as last week when AC was down 5 with 25 seconds to go and came back to win against Carter, or when they beat LC in the last 20 seconds the night before to get a share of the title. On a different note, I wonder if the OS boys will sport the Coolio look at Alcoa in the region...

Losing an eight point lead at home with 3 minutes left isnt the refs fault. I cant imagine any bias one way or another. especially in a District tourney game espcially against the home team.

Anyway, OS has a great chance to finish 3rd in DT which and beat Kingston. Most likey OS will play either Fulton or Austin East, so the Cats will hbe looking uphill after the Kingston game in the regions at Alcoa.

Good Luck Cats and stay focused!

When you find the voting location...please let me know. As it stands right now, there is no accountablity for any officials. I would like the opprotunity to give the good ones praise. If the officials supervisors had some input from coaches... they could help the weaker officials to improve and make a positive contribution to the game. Without them... we do not have a game.

    • Deja vu all over again, 7 yrs apart. SMDH Does anybody talk to each other?
    • OK, well, that’s because two quarterbacks can’t start. That’s football 101. The main quarterback won the starting job, so he was on varsity, and the Seymour transfer did not win the starting job. He played some varsity. He was mainly junior varsity, and he balled out when healthy, so for the starting quarterback who’s been starting varsity since his freshman year, if you have any form of proof that he’s gotten worse, somehow, whether that means stats or whatnot, please feel free to share.
    • They’ve both gotten worse. I’ve seen enough games to know that.
    • The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.
    • I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.
