Halftime Band..boost or bore?

Dear Posters,

At halftime at the football game I am at, the band goes through the same routine each and every game. The half time performance is using the time as a "practice field" for band competitions. This is not unusual but is a bore and certainly a band can play for practice at away games and even ONCE IN A WHILE do something more boosting to the crowd who came to see the game!

At least, I would believe the band part should be more supportive of the game at hand and not to always use the home field as a practice session during halftime.

At your school, does the band do the same thing each game? Is the band director alert enough to actually have some variation and boosting stuff for the fans? Let me know. Is it a rule or something to do the same routine at every home game?

Surely, a halftime show can be more of a boost to the fans than the bore it becomes with constant repeat every game.

God Bless. Dart.

If it's done well, It dosen't matter. They'll always be enjoyable. "And the Band played on"....and I, for one, love it. (keeps me moving in the cold ;) )

If you play in the band, any band, my hat's off to you.

Maryville plays the same thing every game (and it's splendid!....hip too!) but I suspect so do all the other schools.......You can't teach a whole group new music and choreography in a week or 10 different routines over a summer. Just enjoy and see what they do. Make it fun.

Don't post much, but you have struck a nerve with me. I know the band at the BBS-SP game last night (boyd's band imparticular) got the crowd pumped up. I watched a crowd give a standing ovation to our group for about a minute and a half. For those who don't know, that's a long time to be standing clapping. I think this reenergized a crowd that was wound up tight with only a 10 point lead at halftime. I know that's what it did for me.

Boyd's crowd, in my opinion, loves to watch the band perform. It takes a long time to learn a show and to learn it well. Yeah. We get ready for contests, but by now, the contests are all over. Most of the bands I know now are getting ready for concert season. This ain't college. If we wrote a show that the band could "park and play", half the crowd wouldn't pay attention at all. We try to use halftime to show people that we not only have one of the best 1A football teams in the state, but we also have one of the best 1A bands in the state as well.

Sorry you think the halftime shows are sometimes boring. Those kids out there, though, work their butts off during the year and deserve to be recognized. So get up and let 'em know you are proud of 'em. Yeah. Football games are supposed to be about watching great games and the excitement of Friday nights, but most importantly they are to showcase your kids.

I always think a band adds so much to a high school football game. We didn't have a band, and only one of the teams in our region had a band when I played. In my entire high school career, I think I played in a total of maybe 12 or 13 games where a team had a band. It always fired me up when the opposing team's band would play their fight song and then their generally lousy off-key version of Rocky Top.

And pepvol, today's show was great, but their "12 Days" show two years ago was even better. The 2001 show included several shots at Steve Spurrier and UConn, including this picture on the jumbotron of Spurrier repeatedly throwing his visor.

our plays the same music, which is to be expected . they can only learn the music and marching routines to so much. BUT to take the whole third quarter off to socialize? and to not play the fight song when we score because they are milling around like a herd of cattle is to much. Someone needs to pay attention. After all they are there to support and encourage the team and the fans. the halftime shows are great but who watchs them but the band members parents. there i have said it and got it off my chest. I apologize the all the band member and their parents cause i know they will sure be sore but that's how a lot of people feel at the games.

Bigwes69,

I was at that UT game and I remember that halftime show I liked! I mean, that's one of ages and UT band did a great job of it. I must say I left the stadium still laughing after that one. :P

    • I’m not really saying that I think Tennessee HS football is really all that good. I was just saying I didn’t really think that Corbin was a mediocre football team when Alcoa lost to them. Tennessee high school sports as a whole isn’t very good to be completely honest. They are good players who come from Tennessee in all sports but the overall quality of play and competition is par at best when you compare it to the rest of the country
    • Yeah corbin thats the team.  Yeah they are 4a now, but in 2017 they was 3a, and didnt win a title, and was steamrolled in there playoff loss.  They alo got beat by a 1a team that year just looked up there secedule.  Point is a 3a team in tennessee good enough to win a title should not be losing to a 3a team in kentucky that got whipped in there playoffs plus lost to a 1a team.  We always say tennessee football is far superior than kentucky, but our teams have not been doing a good job of showing it.  Ive always felt a 3a champion in tennessee is equivalent to about a 5a team in the weak bluegrass state, but the few games ive followed the last decade we have been getting whipped.  Blackmon to bowling green, alcoa to corbin.   The worst is when Union City played a team about there size named mayfield the same year they won a title, but got beat by like 40 and shutout.  Then that mayfield team doesnt win a title.  Ive seen far to many of our teams win a title, and the same dang year lose to a school from kentucky thats about equal in size that isnt even good enough to win a title in there state.  That mayfield team beat trousdale county one year, and it was trousdale only loss in like a 40 something game stretch, then that team gets whipped in the finals in kentucky. So no team trousdale played in there class can beat them for like 3 years, and they go undefeated against there out of class opponents in tennessee, but lose the one game they play against kentucky to another small school that is around there size.  Do u not think it looks bad when our number 1 team in a class plays a kentucky team thats the 2nd-5th best team in there class of similar size and loses.  Sure doesnt look good to me.  We always down kentuckys football, and say we r superior, but we have looked like a joke in about every game ive cared to follow when i thought its a great matchup.  Alcoa, union city, blackman, trousdale co ive seen it to many times.   I was all over that thread when union city played mayfield, and a coulple of those mayfield fans got on this board, and there was a good back and forth, between us in tn and the mayfield posters.  We was telling them how superior union city would b and how they would run it down there throats all night.  Of course the mayfield fans just said wait and c tennessee football is behind the times, then after union city got destroyed we looked stupid.  Aint noone on here thought alcoa would lose to corbin either and they did.  I dont care if it was in ot, do we do moral victories now?  Hay we can win 10 titles a row in 3a in our state, but the 1 time we play a kentucky 3a team we lose, but lets b happy it was only by a point in overtime to a team that cant win in any class they have been in in 40 years so lets celebrate that our champion cant beat there runner up who was beaten badly in there title game lets be happy about it.
    • Northview was very impressive last year. I think their draw cost them last year. They played South Side and Dyersburg and then Heritage. South Gibson, South Side and Dyersburg only two will go from the west. Will be a dogfight for sure. Like I said earlier, if South Gibson don't learn to score they won't make it to state. Will be interesting for sure.
    • Worst thing SC could do is get rid of Dyer. I agree with everything said above.
    • Jada Hart, Jasmine Bailey and Kaitlyn Patterson the first two being PG's are all good guards and can handle ball pressure and are good players. Raven Wells will be a good post. There were games this summer where any one of the one's I mentioned were in double figures. Gibson County will control TO's much better this year and they will press more and get back to playing faster. AA is down across the board. I have been all over watching ball. Alcoa jumped to AAA and Jackson County moved down. to A. No telling who wins it this year. I agree Union City, Westview and Gibson County will be a dogfight and must see basketball. Poster insuated that Gibson County has a mental block against Westview. Well give me Maddie Gray and we line up last year and they wouldn't have won a game. Let's see how Westview does this year. Their starting five last year had three transfers in it. Rogers from Obion, Trevathon from Greenfield and Gray from South Fulton. Looks like they swung and missed with the girl from Florida this year so let's see how they do playing with kids from Westview. Gibson County has a really good 7th grade class this year.I have done learned you play with what you got and work them hard and develop them and see what happens. Just keep battling and see what happens. I like our team this year. Very athletic. Every year is the same with injuries and can be catistrophic to any. I watched GC all summer long. South Side and GC was very evenly matched and was a classic war.We had some quality wins this summer. Beat Huntingdon, Henry County, Bowling Green, Liitle Rock Central as well as a couple other quality Kentucky Teams. Westview's talent pool may not be what it has been without transfers the next few. And as far as Wilkins riding off into the sunset, where do y'all seem to think he will leave?? Wilkins is a healthy dude and he loves basketball and loves coaching. I wouldn't be suprised if he coaches a few more years. He loves the game and loves every minute of coaching.
