TheEgoHasLanded
6'8 Tavarious Payne has decided to enroll at Memphis Hamilton High School. He played last year in Washington state and really cleaned up his attitude and will now play for Anderson's Wildcats along with University of Memphis signee Shawne Williams (The nations best Small Forward). I saw Payne last saturday at my brothers D2 school and talked to him (I've known him for about 4 years). I have no problem with him going to Hamilton. I think he will be on a much better team, be with kids that he can really relate to (if nothing else in height, I think they have four 6'8 kids just on the team). He will also be closer to his house. He will probably get free transportation and possibly a free lunch. The point of this, is not to accuse Payne or Hamilton of recruiting...it is to show that the Memphis City Schools can get any player they want, and if you are going to punish private schools for open zones...perhaps you should look in the mirror and see the Memphis City Schools and what open enrollment can do. You can read about Payne on the coachT.com webpage, he's talked about on the last paragraph in the article about Shawne Williams.

I'm going to start encouraging all coaches that I know to go to Washington so they can find a player too. I'm just gigging you a little, Ego. I don't think this particular case has anything to do with Memphis open enrollment. This kid could have just as easily gone to any other Memphis school. I do agree that open enrollment is a huge advantage for any shcool to have when they are competing against schools that do not have open enrollment. The best example of what open enrollment can do: White Station of course.
TheEgoHasLanded
So when a public school gets a player that is pretty good, it's just supposed to be like that. When a private school gets a kid that excels in sports, there is a problem. You can't have your cake and eat it too...there is either a problem here, or there isn't. From the posts I have seen so far, there isn't a problem, which is fine...so don't complain about open zones for private schools...complain about their coaching, parental involvement, or facilities (which any school can amass if they choose) but don't complain about open zones. TheEgoHasLanded
I'd really like for this topic to stay serious...if you don't have anything to say, or don't feel like contributing, then please don't. Go to another topic, but I started this thread, and I would really appreciate it if we could have serious contributions please. Thank you. The best example of what open enrollment can do: White Station of course. Open enrollment is the key to every arguement that has gone on in this forum. But the T$$AA will do nothing about it in any case, with the exception of helping out the 5A's when they took out the financial aid schools so the big boys would no longer be embarassed by losing to BA and their ilk. This Thursday will be nothing but a continuation of the status quo, with the 'smoke and mirror show' of the Virginia Plan forced down our throats as a false solution to try and make it look like they did something. Indian
It isnt just about open enrollment. The student at a private school on the average is much more willing to play a sport and furthermore, more willing to put in the time and effort needed to succeed than the average public student. If that isnt true, there wouldnt be dozens of male and female students walking the halls that could be playing for the public schools instead of hanging out or whatever on game nights. Most of that type have no interest at all in anything like sports, theyre not in the stands or on the field our court.
std
Indian, I think part of the problem you speak of is to be placed on the coaching staff of the school. Look at Hillsboro in Nashville. Somehow the head coach has convinced those kids to come out, same thing at Pearl-Cohn with Fitzgerald. Teenagers have buttons that you can push, some people know how others don't or just don't care. Indian
Those are 4A with probably 1,000 students. If its the fault of the coaches, then every coach in the school is bad at it because its a problem in every girls and boys sport offered.
