If you had to rate the all-time greatest players at positions over the past 25 years from the

Knoxville area whom would it be??

 

QB-Chad Pennington

RB-Reggie Cobb or Leroy Thompson

WR-??Billy Williams

D/OL-McRae?

LB-Gaylon

Actually Charles McCrae was not very good in high school. He would not have even been on my top 100 list. It was his 6'8" frame that coach Fulmer liked. It took the UT staff to get him what he was. Although if you ask him about Nuclear genetics he might be at the top of the class. Great guy as well.

I would also add Todd and Brent Collins to that mix of LB's. The LB from AE during the mid 80's was also a front runner.

One of the best linebackers was Desmond Scantling from Bearden

Mikal Smith (Lovie Smith's Son) was one of the best overall athletes

Todd Helton, was a heck of a high school Quarterback, probably better than Pennington in high school

Jason McAdley and Mike Gibson from Oak Ridge at Wide Receiver

Linemen, Bruce Wilkerson Tyson Claybo Darren Rothenberg

One of the best high school tailbacks Leroy Thompson

I know I have left so many off the list. It depends on if the athlete fits into the model that his high school is running. Pennington was running the wing T at webb. And we all see how he did when he got in a program that showcased his talents.

Pound for Pound the toughest football player I ever seen was Matt Blankenship of Maryville. He was 5'8 190lbs and would tear your head off. I remember him having 25 tackles vs Knox Halls in 1993.

David Satterfield was the linebacker alongside Todd Collins. David was a hardnose player with 5.0 speed but during the game he was 4.7, he was a gamer. He was crowd favorite at Jeff County and went on to play a couple years at App State.

Although Dustin Moore was a talent at TE for UT, he was a TB at Greenville. Good call on Spradlin and Davis. Blankenship was a tough player.

Thanks. Has any other school ever had a LB tandem like the Pats when they had those guys? Besides LT and Carson of the Giants in the 80's.

Talkin about pound for pound, what about #22 for Maryville in maybe 96-97. Tough as nails and a gamer. Played wideout. Made big catches for them in the Halls game and couldn't have been more than 5-6. Only Maryville game I saw in 97 was against Halls and I think he caught a fourth and about 20 in the 4th. Drug one foot to keep the drive alive, a great play on any level. He played DB too. Anyone know his name?
