Fresh Idea

Recommended Posts

We've discussed may possibilities and the current system of Tennessee athletics, but we neglected to discuss one area. What if we eliminated all divisions in every sport across the state, so that DII, A, AA, AAA, AAAA, and 5A were combined to force competition and add value to the title of 'state champion' ?

I personally like the idea. It probably won't fly because it's really hard to "go back." Many variations of this idea have been floated out there before. Great suggestion, though!

Heck...why not just let everybody play college teams. <_<

saywhat,

It would take alot of guts for the people in adminstration, coaches, and parents to vote for your recomendation. I like the idea but there is no way that the "everyone needs to feel good" society that we live in today would vote for that. We are not as tough and accepting of challanges as previous generations.

Indian,

The reason that very few will vote for a one class/everyone together state championship is quite simple.

In 1995 28,500 people witnessed Brentwood Academy defeat Riverdale 27-16. That one game more that anything else changed the landscape of Tennessee high school athletics.

For the same reason why Cumberland U. in Lebanon doesn't play UT Knoxville in football! Do you think getting the crap kicked out of them year in and year out would make CU any better? Why would anyone want to go to this game?

Putting everyone in one division would not be safe for the players in my opinion. Most 1A schools field many ninth graders and in some cases eigth graders. in D11 and 5A these schools field the best of the best upper classmen. I would not want my eigth or ninth grade son to have to go against a 5a team playing all upper classmen.

JV teams would still exist, and success would be redefined. This proposed change would take guts from everybody on the TSSAA and everyone near it. The 51-3 games would still be 51-3, but there would be a wider field of competition. It would be like a race in which the same people ran year after year. For one runner, success might be winning the race, but for a whole lot of others, success means beating that guy, the guy they always meant to beat. Creating divisions just bitters sweet success, because the state champion, team or individual, knows that he or she might not be the best. The medal or trophy or whatever has less meaning. Alternatively, we could create as many divisions as schools so that everyone is a winner and champion (everyone would feel good if we did this).

It is important for our leaders, be they in politics, war, or athletics, to use their guts to make the right decision, whether or not that decision is popular.

    • Lol when was last time they won region or got past the 3 rd round.
    • Gravedigger gotta finish filling the hole before hitting 40 East. May need a new Yellow Shirt play signaler on the Stones. And apparently a new strength coach now. Cicadas must've got shaken out of the bushes in Donelson. Hopefully the mower man sticks around to keep DG field looking pristine. Maybe new OC can call in a favor to his PGA friends that knows a thing or two about being green during the season. The heat is on soon. Bring in the 2 way freak Iceman and cool things off. He knows a thing or 2 about wildcats. Gotta take our talents South soon for Nationals. Don't step on my blue suede shoes.
