I think you overestimate your Pounders and underestimate the Irish. Maybe the jamboree was just a fluke but it appeared to me that Central is down from last year. I hear the Irish are improved. I agree with a Pounder win but much closer than your score

I love to tell the story of ND v. Central Pounders in the fall of 1977. ND was down 20-0 with about a minute left in the third quarter. ND had held Central to negative yards rushing but Central had scored on three long pass plays and missed one of their extra points.

After scoring the third TD, some of ND fans had seen enough, and it was a cold night, so they decided to pack it in and head for the parking lot. As I was heading to the sideline I saw this and without thinking, and in a fit of rage yelled out for all in the stands to hear..."Where the heck do you think you're going...this ain't over yet!" Realizing I had messed up by saying "heck" ( yes, that was bad then and it still is today), I sprinted for the middle of the field rather than going to the sideline for K/O return huddle(trying to avoid my coaches rath). We huddled again at mid field and everyone else sensed the rage of losing and vowed to fight to the death if need be (or words to that affect)! Eddie Hickey received the kick off and all of us threw the greatest blocks we'd ever made and he took it to the house. We then went into the fourth quarter.

During the fourth quarter of that game, three different ambulances had to cross the field in order to take 4 of Central's players to the hospital. As I recall two had broken collar bones, one had a broken arm and I think one had a broken leg.

I don't say that to brag, because no one ever wants to see another player with that type of injury, but you can sense how intense that fourth quarter was. I've never seen anything like it since.

Eddie Hickey went on to score two more TDs(Athlete of the Week) and ironically we missed one of our Xtra points and the game ended in a 20-20 tie! We went into O-Time, during the first series, we both kicked field goals. Central got the ball to start the second overtime, tried to pass and was intercepted! We immediately lined up and kicked a field goal to win 26-23!!

That game taught myself and all my teamates the meaning of the word.... tenacity!

Good Health to all the players this week...Good Luck to the Fighting Irish!!!

chattcity,

i am not overestimating the pounders or underestimating the Irish. I said that Notre Dame will be improved this year but the thing is, they do not have the athletes like Central doesand it will show. Thier is one thing that you cant coach and that is speed and Central has probably more than ND does. Yes, Central will not be as good as last year, its hard to replace a qb with the versitality of Joe Despeau and a powerful runner like Micheal Davenport. But i think Central will use this week and next against Warren Co. to get these guys valuable experience so they will be ready when thier region starts.

Chattcity,

Let me say that I agree with your statement above...I have not seen either team play however, normally when one team has dropped-off and the other team has improved it is usually closer than some people may think.

Another thing, Notre Dame is at "home" and even the oddsmakers give a edge to the "home" team in most games when it "appears" to be close. The first two(2) games of the season are always very, very, dangerous because you never know how the new players(or the players that didn't see much of the field last year) will react especially when the game is on the line.

You never, ever know about the "intangibles"(i.e. referees, injuries to key players, or turnovers). And yes I know this is all a part of the game of Football but I have seen to many "opening" games get "twisted"!!!!!

Now for my prediction: I'd really rather analyze a game after it is over, however, if Central jumps out to at least a 2 or 3 touchdown lead the Pounders should win; but if they let Notre dame hang around until the 4th quarter we might be reading about an upset:

Pounders- 21

N. Dame- 7

Well well, I would say I think this is going to be a good game, but I am not sure. I can't tell you much about Notre Dame and that is my fault for not getting out and seeing them play in a scrimmage yet this year. I do know that I watched Central play in the jamboree and was not impressed at all. Although I do not believe that Central can be as bad as they looked against Hixson. I think that Notre Dame will have another producing team somewhere around the .500 mark, but even as bad as Central looked last Friday night I have to pick them to win this game. Their program has gone to far to go down now and I think that after the showing last Friday I that Hayes and the Pounders will come out with something to prove and will beat Notre Dame. Not sue id you call it an upset or not, but I think the Pounders will win.

Punders- 24

Irish- 20
