USA Wrestling, the AAU and Future Champions

Greetings, Tennessee Wrestling Community!

A new wrestling season will soon begin...and all of us at the Tennessee Wrestling Federation invite you to join us and USA Wrestling as we strive to develop Tennessee into a premier wrestling state. Is this possible? Absolutely...but only with everyone's help and support.

In cooperation with the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga and USA Wrestling, the Tennessee Wrestling Federation is embarking on an ambitious endeavor: maximizing the participation of wrestlers, coaches and officials in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling. FEAR NOT...we are not abandoning folkstyle; after all, it's the reason for the season! But participating in freestyle and Greco-Roman is how the nation's strongest wrestling states got there...and those styles will make us better folkstyle wrestlers as well.

Before we continue, we need to recognize that we're all on the same team. The turf war between USA Wrestling, the AAU and Future Champions needs to come to an end...and the sooner, the better. Nobody benefits by limiting the competition opportunities we can extend to our athletes. By being involved in the activities of each of these organizations, wrestlers, coaches and officials can benefit from the advantages that each organization offers. When we reach such an understanding and become collaborators instead of competitors, we can move on to the next step.

So...what is our plan?

1. Implement a system of regional training centers throughout Tennessee.

These training centers will be open to wrestlers of all age groups and will operate from November through August. Coaches agreeing to host a regional training center will receive a Tennessee/USA Wrestling developmental program. Designed by the UTC coaching staff and USA Wrestling's developmental program, coaches will be provided with a detailed practice itinerary, along with a video program illustrating the techniques to be covered in each practice. The video program will combine technical instruction with action footage from college and international wrestling events. As an incentive, the coach who builds the largest membership at his regional training center will win an all-expense paid trip to the NCAA Championships in St. Louis.

2. Implement a "belt series" to reward wrestlers for participating at a regional training center and competing year-round.

Modeled after the system USA Wrestling has developed for each of its national age groups, the belt series will be based on a soon-to-be developed point system. Wrestlers will earn points for practice participation, competing in local, state, regional and national tournaments, and for their performance in those events. Wrestlers may earn competition points for both USA Wrestling and AAU events. Awards will be given to the top point-getters in each age group, as well as an overall belt series champion in each age group. Since we are promoting the most competitive environment possible, the awards will be significant. We expect that this program will get wrestlers excited about the training and competition opportunities the Tennessee Wrestling Federation will be offering this year.

3. Create and fill the position of Tennessee developmental coach.

* The developmental coach will have several duties:

* Oversee the regional training center system and the belt series.

* Assist in fundraising.

* Help bridge the gap between USA Wrestling and the AAU.

* Perform other duties as assigned to improve the quality of wrestling and coaching in Tennessee.

Several other states, most notably Minnesota, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Virginia, have seen their performance, at a statewide level and nationally, improve significantly due to the contributions of a state developmental coach.

The Tennessee Wrestling Federation would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported our programs in the past. Without your help, we would not have been successful. We have already received commitments for about 25 regional training centers for the coming year. If you would like to know more about the regional training center system and hosting a regional site, please call me at (901) 461-8205. We will continue to keep you informed about our programs and how you and your wrestlers can get involved. Good luck this season...and join us as we take Tennessee wrestling into the future!

Sincerely yours,

Tom Marable, State Chairman

Tennessee Wrestling Federation

I'm just wondering how all of this is going??

If these 3 organizations were truely serious that the focus of their mission was to better amature wrestling in TN, then the first and most important step would be that they would honor one anothers membership cards for tourney participation. By mandating that the wrestlers buy a participation card into each organization you send the message that you're all about getting money. I dare either USA, AAU, or FC to step forward as a leader to implement such a polocy then everyone would know your true intentions.

We got invited to participate in the Clarkville Slamfest, which is good for our program, bad that I'll miss the Franklin, BC, Collinshill matchups, amongst others, including your strong program.

I won't even be able to see the Baylor - Collinshill matchup on Friday either. Shucks!! RMC will have to fill us in.

Ross, you are so funny. You have the number one ranked team in Ga. and you just want to be competitive? Your team is coming to win. You are like Lou Holtz, never have a chance to win one match up leading into the contest. LOL :o

Is it true that UTC doesn’t have the Mocsters Club team anymore? They were under the Future Champions when we were there in the late 90's. What year did it stop?

They had some great kids come through that program.

Jordan Leen-Baylor

Jake Giesmeirs- Baylor

Chad Turner -Farragut

Justin Blair-McCallie

Just to name a few.

I was talking to Waylon Lowe and he said he had been put in charge of starting the program back up. You Folks in Choo- Choo Town need to get on board.
