Will Tyler Smith go to UT now?

Niles opened recruiting back up because he has no relationship with the new coach. He has a year to develop a relationship with Bruce Pearl. His reason for opening up recruting is not a "dislike of Bruce Pearl" its a situation of not knowing him. After a year of recruiting he could easily end up at UTK.

You are right, Niles, Chism, and Kemp all have another year to decide. BUT, Tyler and Gordon didn't have that luxury. These guys are not lured to a school because of the school, they are lured because of the relationships formed with the coaches and the athletic program that they are going to be apart of. \

 

People like to think that because of the school name, kids want to go there. The name is only as big/important to a kid as the team in the sport that he/she plays. Just like if Fulmer turned Tennessee Tech into a power house, then it wouldn't be the school at Tech that drew recruits, it would be the coach and the amount of wins that he had won there; or if Pitino were at UT-Martin and started winning and got that program to a powerhouse level, athletes would then want to go there for the basketball program and not the school.

 

Again, these kids all become comfortable with a coach and his staff and when that changes, the kid should have the right to leave and go else where no matter if he is an incoming freshman or a junior. Smith and Gordon didn't get a good vibe from Pearl in the phone calls/visits that he extended to them, but that doesn't mean that Pearl isn't going to work out up there, it just means that he now has to develop new relationships with this next years incoming class.

I hear what you're saying, but following that logic to it's conclusion, shouldn't Tyler Smith and Jamont Gordon be packing for Coastal Carolina? I'm sure Buzz would give Chuck Benson a spot on his staff.

 

It's not that easy. Sure the coach plays a big part in a recruits decisions as do facilities, distance from Mom's home cooking or a girlfriend and school tradition. These days you've also got to figure on what the AAU coach is filling their head with and/or the shoe company. Basketball in particular really needs some reform to get it's act cleaned up. I do agree with you on this Bertier, the whole Tyler Smith story hasn't come out yet. I'll be interested to see what shakes out when it does.

No, he was mad he didn't get Deon Thomas and made a bunch of allegations the NCAA investigated and found to be unsubstantiated.

When Coach Pearl First meet with Tyler right after the NCAA tourny there were many people in the room. The principle Bobby Hastings, the girls softball coach Donna Cobb, the mens basketball coach and his wife Billy and Beverly Holt and his dad Billy Smith. Coach Pearl started the meeting off by introducing himself and then offerd this comment without being asked " if you dont feel completely comfortable with us I will give you your release"! If that is not a bold face lie then what would you call it? I'm very loyal to UT but I have a big problem with that comment! How is this coach going to get any good players to sign when they know he could possibly be telling them lies? We all know recruiters will try and bend the truth a liitle just to get a kid to sign but when the head coach gets caught telling one in the first three weeks on the job there is a problem!

Ok, he turned in someone he thought was cheating. He didn't commit any infraction and wasn't charged as such. I can't believe a Dana Kirk disciple is chiming in on this!

I guess we'll see where all of this is headed in the next week or so. One of the Nashville talk radio shows implied there was alot more to the story than was being reported at this time. I suspect an AAU coach or two is involved in this thing as well. I know UT's policy has not been to grant a release to any student athlete that signs a letter of intent. There is an appeals process that can be followed and my guess is that the athletic department told Coach Pearl they weren't in the habit of giving a release.

 

This is not alot different that T.O. renogotiating his re-negotiated contract. Who signed the contract with the University of Tennessee? Does it say anywhere on there that the contract is null and void if the head basketball coach and/or his assistants are no longer employed by the university? This was in November in the early signing period. There was still almost 5 months before a signature absolutely had to be on the dotted line. Do you think UT wouldn't have waited for Tyler? I'd say the University of Tennessee's word is as good as Tyler Smith's.

ksgvols, don't think it hurt me to say that but I'm simply stating a fact! There were 2 UT alumni in that meeting! I know its UT's policy not to release a recruit but no one made coach Pearl say that! He did in fact lie. I'm sorry. I never thought I'd be unhappy with any head coach on the hill but too tell you the truth I'm very disappointed with Pearl right now. It will take alot for him to earn my respect.

Dana Kirk is scum, never said he wasn't. FWIW, he was also before I started following Memphis.

 

There's a little more to it than just turning in somebody he thought was cheating. Read this and then tell me he was just turning in somebody he thought was cheating.

That explains why he told Smith at first that he would release him if their meeting didn't go well. Then, after the meeting, he says he has to consider the interests of 11 student athletes above the interests of 1.

 

I don't know about your part of the state, but over here we call that a "lie". And believe me, with the politicians we deal with, we're quite familiar with the process!
