  1. The meeting was open to the public. There were many members of the press there along with a number of coaches. Schools have been able to provide feedback for a few weeks on the plan. There was even some discussion from the floor about the plan. The overriding issue in going with the new plan was to cut travel costs for schools. In fact, it was the theme through the entire meeting on almost every agenda item. If the board had gone with using the existing plan (5 classes for football) there would have been extreme travel for a number of schools -- for instance Cloudland and Jellico (4-5 hour trip) just to play a regional football game.
  2. Worst call I ever saw was in a boys club football game in Eau Gallie, Fl in 1967. Team from Florida was on 12 yard line and personal foul was called on player from Georgia team. Refereree took ball and marked off 15 yards -- (3 yards deep into end zone) placed the ball down and signaled "touchdown" . (This was same game where runner from Florida broke loose for long touchdown and the kids' dad was running along the stands trying to stay with his son. Only problem was that the stands ended at the 20-yard line. The bleachers stopped, but the dad didn't. He was not hurt too bad except for his pride).

    State Golf Coverage

TSSAA.org is updating the state golf tournaments approximately every 15 minutes. Go to the TSSAA.org home page and follow the link in the center of the page.
  4. The difference between the two teams is less than half of one ratings point, so they are closing the gap. You will find many cases where a team beats another team but is still behind them in the ratings. Can't put everyone ahead of the teams they have beaten. It is the end of the year that matters anyway -- ratings are learning the teams each week, and by the last 3 weeks of the season they are very good -- until that time it is a learning process for the computer.
  5. I entered the Forrest/Huntingdon softball score as a baseball score. My mistake -- they are playing in softball and baseball. Baseball doesn't start for a another few minutes. Sorry Coacht.

    D II State

The format used at the tournament has been unchanged for at least the last 16 years.
  7. Bishop Byrne last year won with 5 loses in Division II. Livingston Academy was the first Division I team to lose five games and win the state. They also were the first 4th place team to win the state.
  8. Thanks for the response. Depending on what week this game was in 1987 - it means that TC has not been shutout in 240 games (180 regular season games and 60 playoff games) -- May be the longest in the state. I only looked at teams in the state championship games, but will look at the entire database to see if there are other shutout streaks. Thanks for the input. Do you know what week that was in 1987 when they lost? It could mean the streak is longer than 240 games.
  9. Here is the last time each of the teams in the BlueCross Bowl were shut out -- My records only go back to 1993 -- and Trousdale has not been shut out since then - all the others have: Team - Last Shutout Trousdale County -- don't know - prior to 1993 Oak Ridge - Week 14 1993 Lost to Riverdale 28-0 Melrose - Week 8 1994 Lost to Whitehaven 8-0 David Lipscomb - Week 8 1998 Lost to Smith County 16-0 Union City - Week 14 1998 Lost to Milan 10-0 Maryville - Week 3 2000 Lost to Heritage 28-0 Goodpasture - Week 13 2002 Lost to David Lipscomb 29-0 Alcoa - Week 1 2003 Lost to Maryville 23-0 Livingston Academy - Week 2 2003 Lost to Smith County 26-0 Ravenwood - Week 4 2004 Lost to Dickson County 14-0
  10. Livingston Academy makes it to the state championship game with 5 loses. Has a Division I school ever played in the finals with 5-loses and has any team ever won with 5 loses? Bishop Byrne won the Division II championship in 2004 with 5 loses -- but what about Division I? I remember Maryville and Pearl-Cohn winning championships with four loses, but can't remember any with five.

  13. William Blount has not clinched a playoff spot. Oak Ridge and Farragut have clinched playoff spots. If Ooltewah beats Oak Ridge and loses to Soddy-Daisy their regional record would be 4-3; If Soddy beats Ooltewah and Farragut they are 4-3; If William Blount loses to Heritage and Bradley they would be 3-4 . Hence Soddy and Ooltewah would be in the play-offs. Long shot of course, but technically, they have not clinced a play-off spot.
  14. Need three scores from last night: Copper Basin/Grace Baptist Memphis South Side/Westwood Middleton/SBEC If you know any of these scores please post. Thank you.

  17. SBEC was once in TSSAA and dropped out. The school was located in Tennessee right on the Mississippi line. They owned adjacent property across the state line and moved their campus there and asked for re-admission to TSSAA which was granted. I don't know the full details, but this is a unique case. It is not uncommon for schools in different states to belong to another state association. As in SBEC's case, all their opponents are geographically located in Tennessee. There is a school (can't remember the name) that is in the Arizona Association that is hard on the California state line. This school's natural opponents are in Arizona. A few years back they won the Arizona state football championship. Upon entering their town there is a sign that says "Welcome to _____, Ca, home of the 19xx Arizona high school football championship."

    ridgeway's record

At the end of the season when playoff postions are determined if there is a tie between teams in regional standings overall records are used to break the tie. The tie could help or hurt Ridgeway, depending if the tiebreaker gets that far.
  19. I am looking for the final score of the Fulton/Tyner game. Knox News Sentinel has story saying 14-13. Chattanoogan has story saying 16-13. Any help would be appreciated in order to get all scores correct.

  22. On May 5th, Alcoa submitted their schedule to the TSSAA with the opponent of Trigg County. From the news articles it does look like it is Hopkinsville (at Trigg County) so the change has been made on the TSSAA website the reflect that. Will check at the office on Monday to make sure that is the correct opponent. It is not uncommon for schedules submitted early in the year to change, especially with out of state schools.
  23. Each year, I take the Ohio rating system and apply it to our Tennessee schools to see how the selection of teams for the playoffs differs. The interesting thing to come from this is that generally they are almost identical. We choose 32 teams from each class to make the playoffs and generally, the Ohio system chooses the same 32 teams. Each year there are some differences when you get down to the last teams selected. I too like the Ohio system, but one thing that continues to separate the TSSAA's method from a computer algorthim is that here you know exactly what has to happen the last week of the season for you to get into the play-offs, where in Ohio, you have to wait until the computer tells you who made it after the last regular season game. Good arguments on both sides of the issue here. Thanks for the URL of the Joe Eitel website site -- I'll keep that bookmarked.
  24. My personal opinions don't mean anything. To imply that I am against all children getting the best education they can get means that you don't know me. I don't spend many low paid hours working on the school board for personal gain or recognition. But, as a school board member, I have responsibility, not only to provide education for our children but to be a good steward of tax-payer money and keep tax rates as low as possible. Let's suppose that home schooled children are allowed to participate, for example, in band and sports. Then at our county school board meeting there is a line of people ready to address the board during our monthly meeting. Parent A "since you are allowing fellow home schoolers to participate in activities and sports, I request that my home-schooled child be allowed to participate in your before and after school program". Parent B wants access to the library, Parent C wants their child to be able to go on school sponsored trips, Parent D wants their child to try out for cheerleader, Parent E wants their child to take a physics course that the school offers. Parent F wants the guidance counselor to find a scholarship for their home-schooled child, etc. If you are in my position as a school board member, help me out with the response I need to give the people who have made these requests? They are as legitimate as the parents whose child plays sports. Also, each request has to be specially handled. e.g. If home schoolers are allowed to play sports then issues like zoning have to be addressed. If the home schooler is to use the library, then issues as to when they can come to the library have to be addressed (as in many schools students can't be in the hallways except for a pass or class change). Each item would have to have new policies developed and implemented by the board. In the end, adding more administrative responsibilities to the schools and the local school board, and most likely increasing costs. I will agree that we're talking about a very small number of children here, but any rules or policies that are set have to be done whether or not it is one or 100 students - same amount of work involved. Like it or not, school systems have to have policies - changing policies requires time and study and money. I want a good education for all students, it is the right thing to do and keeps our country strong and the envy of every nation on earth. If home schoolers are allowed to participate in public school activities then there is much more to the issue than just worring about what school can a home-schooler play sports for. That would be the easiest thing to do.
  25. The point I am making is that if any part of the public school system is opened to a home schooler then you're opening the door for them to request the use of virtually any activity or use of the facility. Do I care if home schoolers check out books? of course not. Dwelling on the specifics of "can they participate in athletics" or "can they check out books" is not the issue. As I said in an earlier post the question is "Does a home schooler have legal rights to do these things". That is not for yor and me to decide but rather the courts, most likely the highest court. At sometime, somebody will file a suit and we'll get the legal answer. What our opinions are on the subject are just that -- our opinions.
