  1. Does anybody remember the Maryville - Red Bank game (2002?) when it was defending 4A vs. defending 5A? That's a case in point. And please don't tell me they had lost a bunch of people, all schools lose people every year, and they still had Riggs. It was nice to see the defending 5A champion taken to the wood shed by a 4A team. But Maryville can't compete in 5A. . . they don't have what it takes and they're just scared, twisting every TSSAA loophole to stay in 4A so they won't get hurt.
  2. I don't know if you can go into Knox Co. But I had a friend in HS who was zoned for South Doyle and paid tuition at Maryville. Drove Alcoa highway everyday to get to school. Don't worry though, SD didn't lose a football player, he didn't play sports in HS. I guess theoretically you could live in Nashville and pay tuition at Maryville, assuming you got in and could drive 2 and a half hours each way. Before anybody gets all heated up over this debate, I know that the primary draw for Maryville tuition students is academics. All three of my friends in HS who paid tution had been in the Maryville system since kindergarden. The main reasoning behind tuition is that it makes up for the difference in property taxes that a Maryville resident has to pay. I'm not even sure if Maryville is taking tuition students in the lower grades anymore, as most schools are getting full to capacity.
  3. Congrats to Melrose on a great season. You all were by far the toughest team that Maryville has played, 2 years in a row. I agree that Melrose was "outcoached." But essentially, It's what Maryville does all the time. One can't say enough about a coaching staff that was picked to lose to Alcoa, Knox Central, possibly Powell at the beginning of the season, yet never played like the underdogs. The scary thing is that this was supposed to be a "rebuilding" year for Maryville. Five outa Six feels pretty good.
  4. Perfect execution on the trick play. 23 - 3
  5. Melrose is falling apart. If Maryville can score here, it'll put it out of reach.
  6. 69 yard TD by Tallent. Excellent run. Missed extra point. 16 - 3 Maryville. That's really gonna put the pressure on Melrose.
  7. Maryville needs to establish some king of running game. I don't think they can keep it on the ground the whole time, but get some 4 or 5 yard carries then go to the quick slants. Melrose has great speed. I think that conditioning could be a factor. I'm worried that if Maryville doesn't get some more points, you could see Cooper bust a long run for a TD in the fourth quarter. That kid is hits the holes fast and then runs over people. Defensively though, I think it's obvious that these two teams have the best defenses in the state, hands down.
  8. Wouldve liked to get the touchdown, but its good to get points. Melrose better stop making false starts on first downs or they won't get their offense going.
  9. I'll be watching it as well from Chattanooga. Should be a great game, but I expect Maryville to win this one by 7 - 10 points.
  10. I really think Maryville wins this one by 7-10 points. I think that all of the talk on this board all week has shown that nothings really changed. I think that favors Maryville, just like last year. Also, if Maryville had capitalized on FG opportunities, They could have won by 7 or 10, depending what they hit. I think a similar thing happens this year. Emotion means very very little in this game. No one team "wants" this one more than the other. 20 - 13 Maryville Go Rebels!
  11. Statistics don't lie redroll, but you could also make the point that the top five or six schools from each public classification would have a similar record, if not better, against their own and the Div-II schools. Either way good teams win. I'd take maryville at four wins to a loss vs a D-II schedule.
  12. There's two ways to beat any good team. One is to "get lucky" aka capitalize on that teams mistakes, especially if they are crucial in a big game, and the other is to outplay them. Get more yards per carry, get big stops, physically beat them at the line. That is how maryville wins. They don't always have the big skill players, but they just perform. Therefore the converse holds true to beat them. Outperform a high performing team. Everybody knows that UT has 10 times the skill players that Vandy does, but a couple weeks ago, Vandy on that day, outplayed TN. It happens to every team, has happened to Maryville, and will happen again.
  13. MasterBlaster - you have very selective research then if you looked back at the schedules. Since 2001, Maryville and MoWest have played 7 times. Maryville is 5-2. The combined scores of those games is Maryville 189 pts, Mo West 78. That makes the average pts scored per game 27 to 11.1 If you take out the 2001 season, since nobody on either team were Freshman until 2002, it changes to 4-1 for current seniors. Also, to answer some other Reg 1 and 2 fans question, the reason we think regions 1 and 2 is so much weaker is because last year, Maryville beat MoWest 37-0 at their stadium and Tennessee High 49-0. To do a little math, that means last years record against Reg. 1 and 2 was 2-0 with a combined score of 86 to 0. Also, if you look at Tennessee Highs schedule that year, they were undefeated coming in, and had some blowout scores similar to the ones MoWest has shown. MoWest has proven they can beat Maryville, one in regular season, and once when it counted, but they have not done it consistently, and Maryville has a big edge in the series, both in terms of wins, and in terms of statistics.
  14. Will this game be on the Maryville radio station 1470? will it be on any radio?
  15. Your premise is flawed. True, the Maryville players might remember that game, but you are arguing that they remember it because it was a loss in a playoff/high profile game. If it is true that past losses causes fear, then MoWest must be about to have cardiac arrest. Since these seniors freshman year, they have played MoWest 5 times. Their record is 4-1, with a combined score of 143 to 40 for MoWest. That means the average margin of victory for the four wins is about 25, or three touchdowns. If you throw Tennessee high into the mix, and make it a comparison of Rebels vs. Region 1 or 2, then their record goes to 5-1, with a combined score of 192 - 40, average margin of victory about 30, or four touchdowns. If past history is so important, I think the Rebels have the edge. Besides, they played at MoWest last year and beat them 38-0, so its not like the playoff loss was their last game with the trojans.
  16. For the sake of argument, I'll concede your point that tuition students give maryville an advantage. But if it was really a big deal, then your local school board can decide to do the same thing. It's not against the law, or the rules. I would bet that within a couple of years Maryville won't take any tuition students simply because the school will be too full. However, if other school boards wanted to do a tuition thing they can. Another point worth reiterating is that most people who apply to pay tuition do not get it, and athletes (or more specifically) football players do not get any advantage in getting in vs. someone who plays no sports whatsoever. If i'm not mistaken, its by a lottery system, and there are far fewer spaces than students willing to pay. Finally, Trojan said something earlier about the cost being high, especially compared to Alcoa. The cost of tuition does not "make money" for Maryville. It simply offsets the amount that any city resident pays in city taxes. It costs a lot to provide quality education, and if a student lives in the city, their parents already pay far more for their education in taxes than a county resident.
  17. It's funny how anti-maryville some people are, for no apparent reason. If Maryville dropped the blount county games (which are a tradition) the teams would be outraged and say that we were scared to play them since theyve been getting better. If we keep the schedule like it is, we get haters saying we're scared to play real teams. If we actually did what you suggested, played some nationally known teams and beat them, you would be nowhere to be found. If we did what you said and lost, you would say: "See, maryville is a bunch of crap, I knew they wern't any good." Does anybody see a benefit to Maryville in any of those? Knowing GQ, he doesn't care about what others say, just how many W-L that would be. To Paraphrase Charlie Weiss: Winning is Winning. I would rather beat the snot out of a terrible team than lose to the best team in the country by one point. Maryville has proven long enough that they are Winners. Forget the poll, and just win. That's really all the kids can do.
  18. Haha ha ha ha ha ha aha ahahaahahhahaaahhhhhh (pause for breath) hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhhhhhhhhhhhhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah. Yeah right.
  19. If the TSSAA considers nicotine a drug, then cokes should not be sold at the games. Caffiene is nearly as addictive as nicotine, only most people don't notice because the side effects are not as severe. Not to mention, someone else said that "tobacco was dangerous." Dynamite, Guns, and Acid are dangerous, as in they constitute an immediate threat to whoevers using them. Neither smoking, nor second hand smoke, nor smokeless tobacco are dangerous. Harmful, of course, but dang it if a coach or any other person wants to harm themselves, go for it.
  20. Does anyone have stats? And were all 14 points for central scored by their D on turnovers?
  21. GovMan, Don't know if it's coincidence, but my resident psychic down here said that this weekend Mars and Jupiter are going to be alligned, shining a red light down through space, reflecting off the sunsphere in knoxville, magnified into a laser beam as it passes through the swamp gas from the greenbelt right down into shields stadium creating chaos and disorder. So this one's for you buddy . . . MARYVILLE: 101 William Blount: -13.6 (I don't know if that's ever been possible before, but with space laser beams and all who knows)
  22. The problem with this issue that should concern everybody, (heritage, hate, KKK, Rednecks, everything else aside) is that this is a slippery slope we are going down. I know that that might even be cliche at this point in our modern history, but when the person "offended' gets to set the terms of what offends them then basic freedoms are lost. There is no right to be offended in our constitution. There is a right to free speech. However, it is not suprising to me this is overlooked since in the past few years the constitution has become simply an old rag in a marbled building in D.C. and not the contract between the people and the government that it was intended to be. There is so much constitutional history that could be brought out here, but it's not really needed. All you need to see is a few recent events in the news to understand the danger of this action by Maryville City school board. In New London CT, the local government decided it was in their best interest to seize private property through public domain to increase tax revenue. The Supreme Court sided with the local government. As a result, any private property that some local board thinks they "need" they now have a precedent to take - but of course its for the general welfare. Never mind private property rights. In Florida, the Terri Schiavo case was huge news for a while. The courts decided that the husband had the right to make the decision for someone who could not make it. As a result, the right to life movement has been severly damaged. Once again, power has been transferred, and the sanctity of life, even one that some would consider "not worth living" is no longer the decision of the most interested parties, namely the family. Sexual harrassment lawsuits have grown every year, up to a point where almost any action could be considered sexual harrassment. Again, courts have ruled that the person offended sets the terms of what constitutes an offense. The point is this - when you transfer power to a minority, or any size group of people in the name of "fairness, equality, past history" or even just take away a confederate flag to avoid problems and people getting all worked up, you are ignoring the contract between people and government. When that contract is ignored once, it can be ignored again and again, in multiple realms of life, with the final outcome of a complete loss of individual rights in the name of fairness, equality, safety, good will towards others, etc. Our freedoms cannot be given up so lightly. If they are, we are headed towards a cesspool of a new American brand of socialism that respects nobodys rights for the benefit of everybody. It is senseless and dangerous. I guess I've rambled long enough, but you other non rebel teams out there watch out - you are next. Riverdell, DB, it won't be too long before you can't use your native american based mascots. After all it was white people under a great Tennessee president who committed "atrocities" against them. It offends me that you would hijack that history for your own Use. Tornados - watch out, people get killed by tornados and it's insensitive to the families of those who got stunk up and spit out of mother natures wrath. Halls - I am a devout Christian and your red devils is wrong. It offends all the Christians in the area. Ok - you get the point. Once we start, where will we end? No one knows. We have the power to change things, but not for long. That power is being given up with far too little resistance by people who would rather just read the paper and grumble about it out of complacency when they are the ones who can incite a change back towards greater individual freedoms.
  23. No way! Maryville or Riverdale, maybe even alcoa could take it to the DII champs. Riverdale was stacked, Maryville is talented and well coached. There's been some years where DII had better teams, recently MBA, some of the Brentwood Aca. of past years. But its not a golden truth of Tennessee Football that the privates are always better than the publics.
  24. I actually agree with you even though Maryville is in the east. The reason is that if you compare gold balls, it only takes one outstanding team in each classification to make it appear uneven. Maryville has been to state 6 times in 8 years now. The two years they didn't go, Central and MoWest went and got beat. Central by Memphis East (i think?) and MoWest by Hillsboro. Melrose showed that Maryville was not above their level. It was a close game, but Maryville pulled it out. I dont think any one region has a monopoly on week to week strength either. Reg 3 4A is tough. If by a fluke, Tennessee High had got past Maryville, they would have gotten drilled.
