  1. Yeah, I played against some of the teams he played on. Don't remember a whole lot about him in particular other than he was a pretty good running back for Oakdale back in the mid-80s. He played with some other good ball players like Frankie Cook (QB), Charlie Hill (WR), maybe Kenny Howard (RB), and was coached by David Stevens. They may have been like 7-3 one year, I'm not really sure. I do remember they only had like 16 players and either referred to themselves or were referred to by others as the "Sweet Sixteen".

    Dead Period

The "Dead Period" gives players a chance to step away and forget about football for two weeks. Players from a program that demands the amount of effort it takes to be competitive needs this time to get geared up for the fast approaching fall. A program not having voluntary workouts? Last I checked no school can hold a gun to any of these athletes making them go to workouts. They may be held accountable for absences with extra running or getting into the coaches doghouse, but they can always Volunteer not to be apart of what it takes to be on a winning team. Any coach in America that gives players the opportunity to come workout when they want and nothing being said to them for not showing up will usually have poor attendance, not to mention a coach on a mighty hot seat come fall.
  3. King, I'm enjoying the deadperiod, but looking forward to another fun fall. Hope the passing league is staying dry and competitive. Probably going to see some heated competition from Polar Bear's and Gary's boys. I know the players will enjoy the experience. Your recent coverage on MPG's impressive stolen base state record got the wheels turning, wondering if such an effort by England would be one that should be submitted to TSSAA. More importantly, does such a record exist? If you think it would be worth following through with, what would be the proper steps in submitting such an application.
  4. I believe this could be a state record of somekind, but never bothered to check it out. Marshall England with 52 consecutive starts for the class 1A Sunbright Tigers. 1993- Started all ten games as an eighth grader. 1-9 record. 1994- Started all ten games as a freshman. 2-8 record. 1995- Started all ten regular season games and the schools first playoff game. 5-6 record. 1996- Started all ten games as a junior. 3-7 record. 1997- Started all ten regular season games and the schools second playoff game. Became the first ever player from Sunbright to make an all-state team of anykind. This mark, whether a state record or not, is one of remarkable toughness of this young man as anyone can see from the records some of these teams probably did not protect the QB very well. To top it off, I know for a fact that he never missed one single day of football practice, sick or hurt, he was there. If anyone knows of players who may have started more games or came close, let everyone know.
  5. Jordan Jeffers is a class act and one tremendous athlete. The only thing that overshadows his athleticism is the caliber of man he is. Congratulations to him and good luck in the future with college football and track.
  6. I was at the game and would like to congratulate Scott County's Jordan Jeffers on a fine performance. I think both TN and KY both had some outstanding players on the field and their talents were on showcase for all those in attendance to see. Furthermore on the debate of the coaching of the game. I believe the coaches did a fine job in the week leading up to the game and the game itself. The problem with TN's recent winless streak might lie with whomever selects players at the various positions. I could see mammoth OT's for TN who undoubtedly had done an outstanding job drive blocking for great running offenses all through high school careers at their respective schools, but they were being asked to be in two point stance and pass block during this game. That was the reason for the TN QB's was running for their lives. Defensively for the TN team could not generate the kind of consistant pressure from the front four, whether the reason was KY's OT were better suited to the type of offense employed or the DL for TN were not pass rushers I don't know, but it was something. I guess a selection committee should maybe take into account what kind of system will be used in these kinds of games and select types of players accordingly. Anyway, it was a pretty good game.
  7. TN's squad has another late addition thanks to Coach Stevens, Scott County's Jordan Jeffers. He will be playing CB some. I'm sure there will be a strong Scott showing to root for TN and Jeffers.
  8. There may be a possibility that he may end up just north of Wartburg. Heard it for the first time just a while ago, and it may be in a position that would be of significance to the striped cats.
  9. Congratulations to Jordan Jeffers. What a performance! All of Scott County could not be prouder of this young man and what he was able to accomplish. The kind of performer this kid has been at Scott High will leave a lasting mark on Scott athletics and will be something he and his family can be proud of for a long time to come. Congratulations to Mike Reber in a fine showing in the long jump. Look forward to seeing what you senior campaign will hold next spring. Congratulations to Coach Tim Hall on helping these two young men achieve goals they had set for themselves. Good Job.
  10. Anytime a long-time head coach, not to mention one with Lunsford's success, leaves there is bound to be some turmoil the following season. Nothing against the coach that is in Cloudland now, but those are some big shoes to fill and anything he does differently will be questioned by the players who played under the previous coach last season. What year did Lunsford become the head man in Cloudland?
  11. I've read this board for several days and I believe it comes down to W's. no WEIGHTS no WINS
  12. In the mid-90's Boyd Buchanan 0-10, I believe it was the fall of '94 but don't know for sure. In the fall of '95, the following season, the first for Coach Akins (don't know for sure if it was his first or second stint there or else where), the team turned it around and went 10-0. Before anyone goes and starts thinking it was a case that a new schedule was put together, it was the second half of the contract. The same teams were played with the difference being home and away. One point of further interest would be the then premiere A program in the state, South Pittsburg. The '94 score was something like 50-0 South Pitt., the '95 score was like 17-7 Boyd. In my opinion that was one of the greatest team/coaching feats in TN high school football history, and I am not even from the Chattanooga area. My point is that it can happen given the right time, people, and place. I guess that is why I like High School Football so much, you just never know from one year to the next.

Drem2- A 14-15 year old parallel squatting 375-425 would not only be great it would be amazing. Not to say it couldn't happen, but I have seen truly strong senior football players who had worked out like animals and achieve personal bests of slightly more or less than 400. Now comparing apples to apples, a true parallel squat is one in which if you put a marble on your thigh at your lowest position in the squat, the marble would roll to the hip. WC60- For a strong young player between 14-15, a parallel squat over 325 is pretty good. The power clean should be over 205, and the bench over 225. These numbers may not seem like much compare to a junior or senior, but a 14-15 year old freshmen doing those kind of numbers would get the attention of any coach in TN.
  14. Coach Gibson and his family will be remembered in my prayers. People all over the upper Cumberland Plateau know and respect Coach Gibson. Never met him personally, but I have followed what he has done in the last few years with CMS and later Central High. He coached at Scott High some time in the late 70's or early 80's if I'm not mistaken.
  15. I played for the team against which Coach Lunsford made his coaching debut way back. I was an assistant on staffs against him, and I was a head coach who went up against him. I always felt he was a very humble yet fiery competitor. I enjoyed the battles and I believe the people of Cloudland won't know how much they will miss him until next year. Good luck to Coach Lunsford in the future whatever it may hold.
  16. The recipe for success in the game of football really hasn't changed since the first game was played. When a team can run the football with success and stop the other team's running game, they WILL win. It really doesn't matter what level of football you are talking about, whether little league or Bill Parcel's and the Cowboy's that is as simple as it gets.
  17. Anyone who has been around football any length of time has been where Cloudland is today. There is no doubt losing a game that you are favored in and even expected to win is the hardest to take. My hat is off to the players from Roan Mtn. for unbelievable accomplishments, although I am sure they are not the goals they had envisioned for themselves. No one should ever try to rub in a loss at any level, because these are kids playing a game that teaches valuable and real lessons of life. People should play with class and be humble both in victory and defeat. It is never OK to rub in a loss or go for 2 when up by more than 50, ever. Because when the light are turned off at the game field the ones that hurt the most are the ones with the most invested, the players, whether they were the team that was upset by an underdog or the team that was beaten beyond belief.
  18. WOW! That my friends is why they play the game. All I can say is congratulations to the CAK program.
  19. Scott County Highlander senior QB Jordan Jeffers had an unbelievable season as he rushed for over 1000 yds and passed for more than 1200 yds. This on the heels of winning the 400 meter sprint at the state track finals in the spring. Great work ethic and an even better young man.
  20. The key to the game may be in the Tigers OL and FB spots. If they can get things going and force CAK to crowd more into the box to take away the FB,then Chaney busts some long ones and the Tigers will be getting one on one coverage and with the addition of the tall/fast WR may be spell "POINTS" for the Tigers.
  21. Sometimes records can be deceiving, case in point is Catholic. Yes they beat a pretty good GP team but who have they played recently. The players can't pick who they will play week in and out, but the schedule maker for the Irish has taken it upon themself to make it "cupcake city" and it may come back to bite them. The Bulldogs have a good team and this week in practice will decide the outcome of the game for them. If the get back to work and forget about the last couple weeks they are a whole lot better than any of the Irish's recent opponents and much, much more physical. Depends which Bulldog team shows up, "Dare I say a Wartburg win, YES."

    Region 2-A

I don't understand how this many posts could be on this thread and no one mention Miles Chaney from Sunbright. I know the Oakdale bunch knows who he is and after a 70 yd QB sneak against Oneida I would figure they would not forget him. Give the fella his due he is definitly one of the most outstanding players in that region.
  23. I know the action on the Highlander field will be exciting tonight, but if jjwsiv and seinfield are both in the stands for Gibbs the best show might be there. "Can't we all just get along."
  24. Good luck to the Tigers. I know they will give it everything they have. My main concern is SHS stopping the high powered passing attack the Jackets bring. I believe the Tigers can stop the run and will be able to run on Coalfield, but Lowe and the boys can score in a hurry. Good luck and I hope both teams come out injury free. This kind of battle goes back many generations and is extra special.
