  1. Freshman football player Andrew Foster, his mother(a teacher at SHHS), and two siblings were involved in a horrible accident early Tuesday morning. Mom and younger brother suffered minor injuries, Andrew is in critical but stable condition at LeBonheur in Memphis with numerous injuries, and sadly his eight year old little sister is gone...please lift this family in prayer, both for the physical recovery of Andrew, and the unimaginable void left when God welcomed little Brenna home.
  2. A copy of the coaches poll and $5.00 will get you a coffee at Starbucks, LOL...but we're proud of 'em still. BTW...Doug says keep the music cranked!!!
  3. Yep...added a great one to the staff! Hated to lose Greening (def. coordinator), but he got a nice offer close to home, and I'm happy for him. "We" almost landed another great retired football mind for the upcoming season (still hopeful), that would have put our staff among the best around, but Stroup himself is defense oriented, so we're OK there anyway. Can't wait for the season to start...but hopefully we have lots of baseball left first.
  4. Can't be "happy" about a loss...but I'm actually a little relieved that they got it clear that they can be beat on any given night, just in time for the tourneys to begin.
  5. Small world indeed!!! I'll tell him.
  6. Just an observation...asking for information, then ridiculing someone's honest and respectful opinion in answering your question is not the way to get many responses. I'll bite anyway. Scotts Hill is young, as a program...just starting to gain respect from credible opponents, and coming off the first "successful" season in their history. Offense The QB can run, and is a decent passer, the backfield will be young, and the best back from last season just had a cast removed from a broken leg. Receivers can run, and have pretty good hands. Line is a question mark...have to replace two or three "monsters" on both sides with smaller kids, but they did ok when in games. Defense Line is the same as above. Linebackers should be good, strong in the middle and fast to the sidelines. DB's can run with anybody. Special Teams The kicker is a bright spot, good accuracy and decent distance. Punter graduated, so no clue. Coverage could be better on kicks and punts, but it's not bad. Coaches Head coach is a gem, and the reason for the upswing. He is new to being a head coach, but has been affiliated with some very solid programs. His knowledge of the game, and ability to sell the kids on his philosophy is great. His recruitment of kids to play has made a huge difference as well, with numbers in the 70's for this season on the sideline. We have to replace the defensive coordinator, who did a great job with schemes, but have added a well respected offensive coordinator to the staff. Hope that is at least entertaining...it's the best I can give at this point. Going to be a tough row to hoe with some "bigger" schools with well respected programs dropping down in classification, but I'll promise that you'll get our best shot.
  7. Burkley is a long shot...he's currently both the girls' and boys' head coach at Middleton, he has taken a very bad program to the top in a short while, it's his hometown, and (last but not least) he's Middleton's equivalent of Vince Lombardi and Bart Starr rolled into one where the public is concerned, as he won a championship there in his playing days too. Dyersburg, to the outsider is a much more attractive job...if Burkley has aspirations of "bigger and better things" for his future, they would have to be considered, but he's in a sweet spot right now where he is. Should the administration convince Burkley that this is a rare opportunity that can not be passed up, it would be a homerun hire. Nobody gets more effort from a team than him, and he knows the game from tip to buzzer.
  8. Still have two with TCA Solomon...and I never thought any of the 15A teams would still have a goose egg in the L column either
  9. My bad...you'd think that I'd have known better than to engage anyone in conversation who thinks that such behavior is ok anyway...carry on!
  10. Back to back state appearances, and a top 5 ranking in coachT and coaches poll this season...does that qualify?
  11. I almost didn't post because it looks like sour grapes to gripe about it, when I actually like the fact that it's great motivation for the kids. Win or lose, I'd love to meet y'all in the finals...lot of verrrrry good teams out this way that don't see it that way though, and I'm sure that you folks have the same problem!! Good to hear from you, and good luck on your half of the agreement.
  12. Polls mean nothing, but if you're going to participate with a vote, do some research. Scotts Hill swept the #1 team in the poll last week and dropped two spots. Like I said,it means nothing except a little recognition for the kids...it just puzzles me how little responsibility to be accurate some voters' have.
  13. Vandy may be right. When I said earlier that Rome was not built in a day, I meant that the road to respect is a long, hard one...one, two, and even some three win seasons are not impossible if you can get the required number (most) of kids to try out, they buy in to the system (even after some dismal losses), and the fans continue to support them after the same losses. It may take a few seasons for the Eagles to compete with some of the better teams, but there are some teams out there that are beatable, even by a very young program, provided that they believe in what they are doing (and of course how hard the coaches worked to schedule those teams). Good luck Summertown!
  14. Doesn't matter...the "rule" is smoke and mirrors anyway. Full pads is with football pants only, with or without the padding. Practice all you like in shorts and girdle, with pads in place. Some other modifications and adjustments regarding time allowed, but mostly won't affect the style of practice, or practice time. Either the talking heads are smarter than we give them credit for, and are trying to appease the liberals...or they're worse than I thought.
  15. Don't clump everyone in the west with those teams you mention. Baseball is a game, but you represent your school and community when wearing the uniform, and showing the absence of decorum to have a "staredown" after the anthem should be punished. If the yelling and noisemaking from the dugout is in a positive manner, and directed toward teammates it's fine...if it's "trash talk" or directed at the ump, I'd be fine with punishment for that as well.
  16. The economic principal of supply and demand has and will dictate which sport kids will choose to play...the "cool" sport is football now because of the attendance at games. The "it" sports mentioned lost some of their popularity due to the changing times, some for administrative failures, and some from public opinion. Bird, Magic, and primarily Jordan's retirement, along with the "evolution" of the game from skill and technique to brute physicality ruined basketball's favor...horse racing has become antiquated and outdated, except for the "big three" triple crown events, which are still revered events. Baseball...strikes, lockouts, free agency...'nuff said. Boxing...lack of competitiveness and talent in the heavier classifications, along with pay-per-view. Football may well dwindle from the pro's problems similar to baseball, but college and high school currently have fanatical followings. For those who rail against football for fear of injury to the participants...check the stat's, cheerleading is #1 for frequency of injury and severity.
  17. He made a good choice. The campus is a short drive from here, lots of Scotts Hill grad's have been educated there, and I know the reputation of the school well. Not only a great school, the baseball team is making strides toward becoming one of the most respected in the conference...maybe John can assist them in taking the next step.
  18. Like I said, Summertown passes the eye test...no doubt one of the best that we've faced, and yes, I'd say that consecutive days with multiple games per day, and the distance traveled would take the sap out of anyone! I also agree that a tough schedule will pay dividends down the road...that's just one of the things that makes this annual (I hope) "showdown" special. Good luck to your Eagles down the road...hope we have the chance to play a 'couple more!
  19. Results by win total Cascade 3-1...wins over Lexington, Jackson Christian, and Riverside...loss to Scotts Hill. Jackson Christian 3-1...wins over Murfreesboro Central Magnet, Middle Tennessee Christian, and Summertown...loss to Cascade. Scotts Hill 3-1...wins over Cascade, Summertown, and Middle Tennessee Christian...loss to Murfreesboro Central Magnet. Murfreesboro Central Magnet 2-1...wins over Scotts Hill and Riverside, did not play Lexington...loss to Jackson Christian. Riverside 2-2...wins over Summertown and Middle Tennessee Christian...losses to Murfressboro Central Magnet and Cascade. Lexington 1-1...won over Summertown...lost to Cascade...Middle Tennessee Christian result unknown, did not play Murfreesboro Central Magnet. Middle Tennessee Christian 0-3...lost to Jackson Christian, Riverside, and Scotts Hill...Lexington result unknown. Summertown 0-4...losses to Jackson Christian, Lexington, Riverside, and Scotts Hill Some great baseball over the weekend!!! I was surprised that Summertown suffered four losses...they are clearly a top level 1A team, and pass the "eye test" for talent. Travel time, pitching rotation, and other factors had to contribute...they will be reckoned with before a champion is crowned. Middle Tennessee Christian also has a talented, well coached team, and will make some noise. I was also impressed with the fan turnout from such distances for the Middle Tn. teams, and I look forward to next season's trip to some of the venues up there...the "showdown" is not only a great measuring stick for different regions, it's an opportunity to see how baseball is done at other strong programs. Last, congratulations to "my" SHHS Lions and Coach Britt on a great week!!! A young program still on the rise got confirmation that they can play with the best of the best, especially the underclassmen pitching...keep working, keep believing, and LET 'EM HEAR YOUR ROAR!!!
  20. If you really want a "war", pool city and county monies and let the two separate entities decide how to split it. Never will any city/county joint fund exist...mark it down. Cities offer services unavailable to county residents, and those have cost...for educational purposes only, your proposal makes sense, but separating tax revenue percentages for education vs. those other "perks" (police,fire,garbage,ect...) would be impossible. I have no solution, but for the record, I see the point being made now. If I had a suggestion, it would be to check with other municipalities in order to understand how it's done elsewhere...this can't be a unique situation. For what it's worth, in Henderson County the county system is allotted a budget, of which the city (of Lexington) receives a preset percentage...one substantially larger than the "same money per student" model some are suggesting.
  21. Guess I'm just the nervous type, but I don't feel that either SH or Riverside played well in our two games,so nothing is settled there yet. The Lions are good, but so are the Panthers and Eagles (and your Lions), and that's just in our little corner of the state...we'll probably know a little more after this week with the four powerhouse teams from middle coming, they're all strong, but Summertown looks like a real contender in 1A. I really think that the #4 team will be TCA (no offense), and that they are very capable of sending anyone home on a given night come tournament time. Thanks for the well wishes, and same to y'all, but lots of baseball yet to be played before I'm comfortable that we're even a district favorite...Jackson Christian will have a lot to say about that.
  22. All the 15A teams mentioned are off to a solid start, with the exception of Trinity, and they have had a very brutal schedule...probably be seasoned by tournament time, and a dangerous opponent. Jackson Christian looks to be the class of the district by virtue of common opponents/scores, but Scotts Hill has two wins over Riverside, and a 4-0 district record. Riverside is by no means in a bad position even with 3 district losses, their series with JC and SH behind them, they could run the table from here out, and SH/JC still have to play twice. Someone from 15A stays home after regionals, and could possibly be a top 5 team in state. I haven't kept up with 13A/14A that closely...Peabody, Union City,Greenfield,McKenzie...someone else...who's looking to be there in the end?
  23. You're dangerously close to the single most prevalent problem involving coaches/parents/fans...right, wrong, good, bad, or whatever, the coach and the assistants should be the only assessors of talent on the team, and in the lineup for a game. If the coach is to be held responsible for his team's performance by the administrators, boosters, parents, fans ect...he shouldn't have to answer why this kid is playing over that kid to anyone.
  24. Sorry, but we have different perspectives.Should Coach Cash not have responded, that would have been a good decision...I believe that he (or any other representative of a school) has the right to respond to a public accusation should he choose to do so, as long as it is in a respectful manner. Mr. Cash said nothing to embarrass himself, his team, or his school in his reply...on the contrary, when someone is publicly accused of wrongdoing and avoids the issue, most assume that there is merit in the accusation.
  25. What secondtoone did was what most people on the 'T do at some point...get on here and vent. It was wrong to call someone out, I'll agree. What Coach Cash did was the most honorable thing available for him to do, given his information (or lack of) about who had criticized him. He should not be obligated to maintain his silence while being accused, and did no wrong in offering to meet in a peaceful manner to defend himself of those accusations and explain his choices. Coaches and teachers are under a microscope, they are expected to always look and act in a professional manner, even when they aren't "at work", while the general public is free to take verbal potshots at their character, mannerisms, appearance, lifestyle, ect...Why can't we give our coaches the benefit of running their programs as they see fit...they alone answer to the administrators for their actions, win/loss records, and behavior toward the students, their parents, and the fans.
