This is spot on, and something that is taking its toll in Knox County. I don't think school admin "undervalue" athletics in Knox County, they are just given a much shorter leash than other counties. Yes you have to have licenses to teach, but there is a little bit of wiggle room around that. As long as the coach has a degree, there are types of job-embedded programs that essentially lets the coach go ahead and start teaching and he has a couple of years to get his licenses- usually by taking an online class somewhere and passing a praxis. It's a bit of a process to apply for these types of licenses, but schools used to do it all the time to get their coaches in the building. From what I understand, the people downtown still allow this to some degree, but its become much more difficult in Knox county over the last few years. For the most part, the communities in Knoxville are very supportive of athletics and so are the teachers/ principals inside the building. However, when you consider that coaches in Knox County get paid less (on average), they don't have a last period Advanced P.E. to go ahead and start workouts, film, practice etc, and that the school board isn't as willing to help get jobs for your assistant coaches, it really makes head coaching jobs in the area less appealing.

That was the rumor a couple of years ago, but he may be more likely to stay in Halls since he's got his system planted. I am pretty sure the Halls youth program is running his offense so its only a matter of time before he starts to really see's the results of that.

If Cummings would have got the job the year after Overton, they would probably be on the same level as Knoxville's best programs. Overton took over 0-10 and 1-9 teams and took them to the second round three years in a row, two of those three they were extremely close to making it to the quarters. I moved to Knoxville in 2000 and have always been amazed at how the teams in the area Roller-Coaster up and down. Since I've lived here Central, Powell, Fulton, Austin East, Halls, South Doyle and even Carter have all had years were they looked like teams you'd see deep in the playoffs and then just a couple of years later they're struggling to break 500.

You coach there? Had a kid that was a senior or something? Impressive to note details of duals from 15 years ago
-
I haven't see them play in person this year but their performance has been up and down all year I believe. Their head coach is a veer-offense guy that likes to run it down your throat, and will mix in a little RPO stuff when he can. Their defense must be pretty solid because they have held some high-power offenses in the area to low scoring games (low-scoring compared to those teams' other games).

Most "Dominating" .... 9 different kids in the state finals of the largest division, and only 4th on the list....

Well with mommy's approval I'm sure they are! I regret that I didn't check in earlier in the week to call you out on that money bet of Powell by at least 14. For curiosity's sake, how high would you have gone on that bet? I never have bet more than a dollar on here, but I think I could have added a few quarters to my maximum for that type of confidence.
-
Czar, I'm starting to think you have (or had) a child at Powell that ended up on the bench when you thought they should have been the star of the team.

My critique of the field goal team was in no way putting blame on the kicker. I was referencing the entire field goal team. Rain or shine, the kicker never had a chance, he had 5 guys 3 feet in front of him. On TV they paused the play on the replay to see who got credit for the block - because there were several players that were right there. The snapper, holder, kicker combo could have maybe overcame the wet conditions.... but the other 8 guys on the field didn't give them a chance to. And if the kicker did hit a 46 yarder last week, than I really don't think its as bad of a call as you guys are making it out to be. If you hit it you put the game out of reach for Catholic, if you miss it (and your kicker has the leg power) it goes out of the end zone and they take over on their 20 - which would most likely be the same result of a punt. Hindsight is 20/20 obviously, but if you have good kicker in high school that was probably the coach's logic in making the call.

Other talking points people are making- That description of Powell's coach is pretty accurate from at least an outsider's perspective. From watching on TV and seeing a few games live, I rarely see kids on the side line getting their butt's chewed out after unsportsmanlike calls or things of that nature. I think everyone knows Lowe has kind of always played off the "bad boys" persona at Powell. I don't mean that as an insult in anyway, the kids love that, and I'll even admit I was a Pistons fan in the late 80s and early 90s. It's up for debate though if the teams in recent years have let that persona get out of hand. And as for it "never" paying off and winning the big one...... never say never. This year they have more talent than they ever have, and all of the usual hats that are capable of testing them seem to be down this year. West and Powell seem to obvious favorites for the semi final game, even with both teams showing they are beatable. Rhea County may be the next team in the conversation, but after that I think we are talking about major upsets for Powell and West to lose before the semifinals.
-
I turned the TV on right at the start of the 4th quarter and thought it was a heck of a game judging just from that.... but clearly I missed some of the worst parts of the game. How many field goals has Powell kicked this season? Did they decide to let the Monday night unit out on the field for that attempt? I rarely criticize kids performance on here, and I won't ever single a kid out, but that entire front line looked awful on that play. From the replay they showed on TV, it looked like 6 different Catholic Players were in position to block the kick.

Enough about the boys lets talk about the Girls

That one girl... with the hair.... and the face... yeah she's gonna do good. -
Comparing Lamar and Scott as coaches is really splitting hairs. Both are great coaches. Coaching ability is really more of a qualitative measurement rather than quantitative, as your not always comparing apples to apples, so looking at specific statistics really isn't the best approach. For example, you kept bringing up their lifetime winning percentages. Scott's would be skewed for the region he played in for the early to mid 2000s. I still believe was the toughest region I have ever seen in east TN. HTV likely knows what I am referring to. That old Region 2 4A had Maryville- averaging about 1 loss every 5 years andCentral- who I believe was clearly the 2nd best team ins 4A when you compare scores with Maryville. It also had Powell who was producing D1 kids at an unprecedented rate that was competing with both of those teams. Scott was building up West at the time, ironically battling with Halls most years just to make the playoffs. So a 7-3 record during that time frame I believe carries a little more weight than most other 7-3 seasons. And whoever said Halls doesn't have pressure to win clearly has never been to north Knox County. Before the Julian era they were very competitive, Overton built them back up and had a couple of solid teams before he moved to administration. They were on the rise before a Cleveland guy stopped in the crossroads for a cup of coffee, and Scott's been working hard to fix that damage since

I haven't looked into who's returning so I'll do this tier style rather than rankings, and this really is just a conversation starter to sort out the pack. Tier 1 - Cleveland Tier 2- Wilson Central, Bradley, and is Summit here yet? Tier 3- Summit, Blackman..... and I guess this where the debating starts Tier 4- Beech, Oakland, Heritage, Science Hill, D.B., Maryville, Rossview, Clarksville, Brentwood, Centennial, Independence, Arlington, Houston, Collierville Tier 5- Jeff county... Not trying to hate on them, they were 3/4 last year but I know they will be stepping backwards this year. I know Tier 4 is a log jam, so who would you bump down to 5 and who would you bump up to 3? And sorry to the 5 or so teams I forgot about that should be included in this conversation.

I hate to hear that for him and his family. I hope the young man will be okay and is able to recover from whatever happened without other complications.

Can you share your schedule? I may have to make a road trip to be a part of this crowd.

I do have a question about the individual sectional that is 50% my genuine curiosity and admittedly 50% me stirring the pot. Did TSSAA make a rule on forfeiting sectional finals matches? Will this become the standard if its a repeat of the region finals match that happened the previous week? Or do top ranked kids have to have a 'round 2' of fighting for their seeds at the state tournament ?
-
The way ours is set up, the sectional will be an 8 man bracket. I could be wrong for regions 7 and 8, but I believe even the worst case scenario of drive time would still be manageable for a morning trip; granted the host school could most likely push the start time of the tournament closer to late-morning/mid-day given it'll be such a small tournament.

Show me where I said an 0-2 kid is probably poor? You're first comment about my example was that it does not make sense to you. Then you attempted to break it down, and just exemplified that you did not see how for the vast majority of programs in the state that negative aspects of time and cost out weigh the positive of a kid being called a "state qualifier". Is that true for all states? Most likely not, but it is for how the TSSAA has ran the individual state tournament since the split of A/AA and AAA (now A and AA). Also, for the scenario I described earlier, how is him not being a state qualifier hurting the growth of the sport? 'Sectional Qualifier' or 'Sub-state' qualifier is an achievement in most states, and it will become one in Tennessee with this new addition. In my opinion, and you probably disagree, it's a better goal stepping stone for those kids. "Great job, you qualified for sectionals in your very first year, lets work hard this off-season and set a goal to qualify for state next year."
-
Comical attempt to try and twist words to build rhetoric there. However, sadly ,the universe in under no obligation to make sense to you. Reality exists whether you understand it or not.

I couldn't disagree with you guys more on it being a bad thing. For coaches trying to grow their program, they convince a kid in the hallway that comes from nothing to come out and join the wrestling team. Even though he's a first year kid, he's varsity because he's the only kid in his weight class. Then he wrestles in the region tournament and places top 4 because he won 1 match or in some regions- he places top 4 just by making weight. Then his parents have to spend money thy don't have to pay for 2 nights at a hotel in Franklin or Chattanooga because their son qualified for the State Tournament. He has no business being in the tournament, so he gets pinned quick twice and is eliminated Thursday night. Yes some programs are fortunate enough to be in a position where they pay for the cost, but I would bet that there's less than 25 public schools in the state that don't have to rely on parents paying. That same kid then tells his coach, who's only trying to build a program and grow the sport of wrestling, his parents said he can't wrestle next year because they can't afford it. This sectional now will sort those scenarios out to where the parents and coaches won't have as many unnecessary costs in building their programs and will really help grow the sport in schools and communities that aren't known for wrestling.

Shooting at Austin-East...very SAD!
sx1234 replied to WilleTheWildcat's topic in Class 5A & Class 6A
Why do you want it described as a school shooting? I am not sure I understand where you're coming from. -
I'll make three $1 bets for any takers. In order of my confidence: 1. $1 that Pigeon Forge wins Single A 2. $1 that Pigeon Forge, Greenville, and Halls all finish in the top 10 of the traditional state tournament. 3. $1 that Halls is at state duals. For anyone that wants to take me up on all three bets, Ill round up and give you a 5 dollar bill if I am wrong all three.
-
I specified "early season" win meaning I was aware that the dual does not carry a lot of weight, as both teams' line up likely changed considerably over the course of the season. Also, I believe it was the 1st or 2nd week of December of last year- so each team probably had at least one notable starter missing from their line up due to the large number of kids being quarantined during that time. Nonetheless, I wasn't trying to make a Halls vs Greenville debate, I was only including the win on their list of accomplishments because Greenville was predicted "way too early" to be 2nd in small school and Halls was not even listed in the top 10. Yes Halls graduated 7 starters, but they have 7 returning starters as well as 2 tough 8th graders coming up that would have started for them last year had they been a year older. Also, (now here is where I hurt some people's feelings) If Halls was competing in Small School last year- Hutcheson (126), Whaley (145), and possibly Wright (106) would likely all be listed as "returning medalists" for the Red Devils.
-
I would have Knox Halls at least in the top 5 (probably top 3). They had an early season win over Greenville last year, finished 10th in the traditional state tournament (higher than any other school making the drop), and missed going to state duals by losing to Dobyns Bennett (4th in AAA traditional) in a dual that came down to the very last match.
