  1. When do all the 8th graders commit to their high schools? Is the transfer portal still open?
  2. If other kids were doing the same, and seen by an official (really seen, not someone saying "of course they saw them too" or "how could they not see them") then those kids should have been disqualified as well. Also, for some of you, I don't believe you understand the difference in agreeing with a rule, and agreeing to abide by a rule.
  3. I agree completely. It is a rule, and needs to be followed for that sole reason. The character of the athlete has nothing to do with the situation. I hate it for the kid, but you can never fault an opposing coach or ref for a ruling like this. I may be wrong, but if the officials are similar to the ones in this area, I believe their lax implementation of rules like this may be the real reason for this situation. It blows my mind how often I see refs not make calls during the regular season, but come post season they are straight by the book. I am talking about seeing kids cutting weight after weigh ins start, watching kids pull their straps down after a match right beside the table, allowing as many coaches, parents, teammates and whoever else to come down to the corner of the mat. Its ridiculous, and even some calls during the match itself (riding a kids hips on top, not attempting a mat return on stand up, kids wrestling without laces covered- yes i know that rule has changed). I feel like refs don't bother to make these calls during the regular season, or have a much more tolerant approach about it, but then actually follow the rules the way they were meant to be followed at the state and region tournaments. It really creates bad habits for the kids, especially the ones that are new to wrestling.
  4. Region 2 and Region 3 should defiantly be combined. With the acceptation of Stone Memorial (who truthfully should be in Region 4 or maybe 5), I don't think a single coach from those regions would complain. Halls is unchallenged in Region 2 since Gibbs dropped to A/AA, and Heritage and Maryville seem to be shoe-ins as well for State dual since Satterfield left William Blount. I think both Heritage and Halls's coaches would tell you that their programs have been down the last two years, but they both still won their regions due to complete lack of competition. Both of the regions are small in number of teams, but are even smaller when you notice that the teams in each region barely have wrestling. Region 2 only has 9 teams, and per track, these are the number of wrestlers entered for the region tournament. 1. Sevier County- 14 (only full team in the region- only reason they were at state duals). 2. Halls- 12 (Only solid program in the region, but even they are down right now forfeiting two weight classes) 3. Anderson County - 11 (probably the next best team behind Halls) 4. Karns- 11 5. Powell - 9 (This is a HUGE team for them compared to most years) 6. Seymour - 6 7. Clinton- 5 8. South Doyle - 4 9. Knox Central - 4 (ZERO last year) And Region 3, with only 8 teams, things aren't much better. Maryville and Heritage are the only full teams there. Farragut is the smallest with only 7, and Knoxville West has just been added back after several years without having a program. If you cut Stone Memorial (logistically makes sense), and combined them, you would have a 16 team region, all located in the greater Knoxville area. This may sound large, but at best only 6 teams will have a full team each year, and 6-7 of them will field half a team.
  5. If someone had the time, it would be very nice to have weight class rankings regardless of a kids division. A top 10 of each weight class regardless of AAA A/AA or D2. They wrestle each other throughout the year, and go to the same tournaments. So you think it wouldn't be much more difficult than keeping the rankings separated.

    AAA Duals

Poor Heritage. They are the region champs that drew Bradley first round. If that's not bad enough, they get the loser of Wilson Central and Science HIll for the first round of consolation.

    AAA Duals

Cleveland over Clarksville Blackman over SC Indy over Arlington* DB over Maryville Centennial over Houston Oakland over Halls* Bradley over Heritage Wilson over SH *The two stars were done on a coinflip, I think each team would follow the same route in the bracket win or lose though Quarters: Cleveland over Blackman DB over Indy Centennial over Oakland WIlson over Bradley 1st round cons: Clarksville over SC Arlington over Maryville Halls over Houston SH over Heritage 2nd round cons: Bradley over Clarksville Oakland over Arlington Halls over Indy Blackman over SH 3rd round cons: Bradley over Oakland Blackman over Halls Semi's: Cleveland over DB WIlson over Centennial Consolation Semi's: Bradley over DB Blackman over Centennial 1st Cleveland 2nd Wilson Central 3rd Bradley 4th Blackman Not sleeping on DB- have them making to the Semi's, and getting their losses from Cleveland and Bradley. Also, I remember reading somewhere someone made a comment about WC not wrestling anyone- they are about to change that (Science Hill and Bradley rounds 1 and 2)!
  8. It always sounds great in theory, but never has been able to be put together for every weight class. There are several reasons why a kid may not be interested: Making weight again, wanting to go to a bigger post season tournament, moving on to a spring sport, not wanting to keep training/practicing for another 2ish weeks in preparation, and also for anyone that won it as an "under dog"- if they just accomplished their career goal with a state championship, why not just hang your hat on that? I thought the idea of the 4 person tournament last year would be odd for a kid that wasn't supposed to win AAA. He just won a state title that nobody predicted him to win, why would he want to go wrestle a 4 person bracket of the A/AA champ, D2 champ, and the guy he just beat at state.
  9. If you win a tournament that has #1, #2, and #3- and if you yourself beat 2 of the 3, then I think you have a strong argument to be number 1 after that performance. I have seen him wrestle several times over the last couple of years and will admit his career, including this year, has had several highs and lows, and a lot of close matches filled with plenty of losses. However, I think he proved this weekend that he does have the ability beat the best kids in the state and could do it again at state. I've always thought he looked like a tough kid and had great abilities (even in matches he's lost) in the past, so I am happy to see him get some big wins, and hope this means he's really turned a corner to be a top kid himself. And for any of you that want to argue with me, please re-read what I said and notice some specific word choices. Did I say I think he will win state? No, I said I think he could. Did I say he is the top guy and deserves to be #1? No, I just admitted that logically you could make a good argument given his last performance. I personally believe this weight class may be wide open, and there really isn't a clear cut #1 right now. Additionally, I have always made a point to never sound like I am insulting a child or speaking bad about them. By saying I don't think he is a clear cut #1, I think I may be flirting with that territory. So to be perfectly clear, Hunter- or his parents, if you read this yourself, let me first tell you congrats on the big wins! Also, I hope you can keep the momentum rolling for the rest of the season and prove you are #1 by winning the state tournament! I live in Knoxville- Fountain City, and do not have any connections to any specific programs, but have always rooted for Knoxville/Knoxville area kids at state, and if you make the finals this year I will be there rooting for you! Edit: And bump, not trying to argue with your opinion on him either, just felt the need to comment since its a kid I've seen a lot of in the past.
  10. Put a * beside this years results in the record books if they decided to do so.
  11. Austin East probably is the worst for kids leaving. Carter, Halls, Gibbs, and some years South Doyle struggle to keep their top kids at home also. Its amazing the difference in how competitive those programs can be when they keep their kids at home. Its like they struggle to get to 500 most years, but when they keep 1 or 2 key players from transferring they may go 7-3 or 8-2 (and usually those 2 or 3 losses are competitive games rather then blow outs).
  12. So I think I may drive down to Bradley Saturday 106: #1. AAA Ethan Wilson (Bradley) #1 A/AA Caleb Uhorchuk (Signal Mountain) #2 AAA Bentley Ellison (Cleveland) #3 AAA Chaz Stokes (Oakland) #3 D2 Ellis Haney (McCallie) #4 AAA Owen Gobel (Franklin) 113: #1 A/AA Connor Leffew (Hixson) #3 AAA Glenn O’Daniel (Bradley) #4 AAA Tenario Thomas (East Hamilton) #6 AAA Arlo Laxton (Cleveland) 120: #1 AAA Jackson Bradford (Cleveland) #1 D2 Jack Braman (McCallie) #1 A/AA Daniel Uhorchuk (Signal Mountain) #2 AAA Luke Belcher (Bradley) #3 AAA Alex Rose (Blackman) 126: #1 AAA Trae McDaniel (Cleveland) #1 D2 Emory Taylor (McCallie) #1 A/AA Trevor Lewis (Hixson) #2 AAA Trey Bates (Beech) 132: #1 A/AA Kale Albritton (Signal Mountain) #3 A/AA Jeremiah Shackleford (Hixson) #4 AAA Gavin Hughes (Bradley) #6 AAA Charles Randall (Cleveland) 138: #2 AAA Kenny Harless (Stewarts Creek) #3 AAA Landon Fisher (Jefferson Co) #4 AAA Seth Gregory (Bradley) #6 AAA Burns Meagher (Cleveland) 145: #1 AAA Christian Isbell (Clarksville) #2 A/AA Kevin Muschel (Signal Mountain) 152: #3 AAA Mason Smith (Beech) #4 AAA Cael Laxton (Cleveland) #5 AAA Logan Fisher (Jefferson Co) #6 Anthony Lynn (Bradley) #3 A/AA Kobie Smith (Hixson) 160: #1 D2 Alex Whitworth (McCallie) #1 AAA Matheson Meade (Bearden) #1 A/AA Preston Worley (Signal Mountain) #3 A/AA Kaleb Mayes (Hixson) #5 AAA Nate Schilling (Cleveland) #6 AAA Owen Zuckerman (Houston) 170: #1 D2 Gavin Cagle (McCallie) #1 AAA Josh Pietarila (Hardin Valley) #3 AAA Cade Meeks (East Hamilton) #5 AAA Zach Brezna (Cleveland) #6 AAA Tyrone McDonald (Bradley) 182: #1 AAA Brooks Sacharczyk (Blackman) #2 AAA Cooper Palmieri (Northwest) #3 AAA Cade Young (Houston) #3 D2 Chase Looper (McCallie) #5 AAA Tito Boyd (Cleveland) 195: #1 AAA Jason Brumlow (East Hamilton) (only one ranked from TN) 220: #1 AAA Ashton Davis (Cleveland) #1 A/AA Parrish Paccetti (Hixson) #2 AAA Ryver Sheltson (Jefferson Co) #4 AAA Brandon Elkins (Halls) #5 AAA Kameron Bingham (Oakland) 285: #1 A/AA Devotis McGurdy (Hixson) #2 D2 James Howard (McCallie) #4 AAA Bowdy Boyce (Blackman) AND THATS ONLY THE TENNESSEE KIDS
  13. That was me! Yes I'm aware Maryville, Alcoa, and some years Catholic play. I live between the other two schools I listed and would like to see them jump in that mix.
  14. I don't have a dog in this fight at all, and haven't seen Maryville wrestle in several years. But, any team that is qualifying for state duals is not "below average". You can argue that they may only be there because they have an easy region, but they beat somebody else at the dance.
  15. Powell vs Maryville vs Knox Catholic vs Alcoa vs Knox Central Basically any combo of those 5.
  16. Byes no, forfeits yes. If you are scoring points for your team in a dual it counts as your record. Yes, any scrub can go out there and get their hand raised, however, with the 3 guys mentioned I doubt that was the case. I would be willing to bet there was several times that these teams were in a dual, and the opposing coach forfeited to these guys by choice. These guys shouldn't take a no contest when they are ready to compete and the opposing coach chose not to wrestle. They were going to get an easy win, and opposing coaches do not have the power to keep them from getting W in the stats column.
  17. At Catholic: Shelton (Jeff County) beat Cummings (Anderson County) in OT. Cummings beat Elkins (Halls) in the semi finals in, what I was told, a very close match that could have gone either way.
  18. Each coach picks what kids make "All-Region" on their own team. This is not a real award in Tennessee. Have you never thought it was odd that there are 7 all region quarterbacks in a region with 7 teams?
  19. Elkins (Halls) is in the 220 bracket at Catholic. Should be a good one for that tournament between him Cummins and Shelton.
  20. Wins/Losses and some schools pins.... That's really the only stats I believe most schools keep
  21. I agree that rules need to be changed. Its odd how every sport makes small rule changes on the national level every single year, yet bodies that govern those sports on the secondary level won't make necessary changes for decades. I don't know if I agree with you on the 1 free transfer for all, as I think that could potentially be taken advantage of, but I believe I would agree with you on most.
  22. Do they want to? Or does an adult (other than a parent) want them to? That's one of the main reasons why the majority of transfer rules exist.
  23. In a similar fashion to a the early season math-ups thread created last week, I am creating this thread for people to share results of any notable matches for this week. Whether it be dual or individual, please share results you may believe are significant. Example: Non ranked wrestler majors #4 ranked wrestler of same weight class. Non example: Defending state champion shuts out a team that has 7 kids in their wrestling room. (Congrats on the win- but the rest of the state safely assumed you would get that W). In my time on Coacht, I have noticed a yearly ritual argument on rankings and their validity. I hope weekly threads such as this can help Hamm, or anyone else interested in starting their own rankings (please do if you constantly criticize Hamm). And yes, I am aware that the majority of this information is on track, however, I believe this will help speed up the process of digging through match results on track by simply high-lighting results that may be significant.
  24. up-vote times 100 I would argue that removing all transfer rules would be very harmful to the "student athletes".
